So far i really like this Malaysian restaurant! I might give 5 stars if their AC is cooler! If you go there on a HOT day you may not enjoy your food as much because it's too hot inside! Ok let's talk about food! Their roti canai is average, kids love it. Roti tissue I find very interesting it's crispy and sweet, no sauce to dip. To me i think it's more of a dessert than appetizer. You have to check out their sauces on the side its good with almost every dish. Noodle soups: So far i love their curry mee young tau foo the most! Tom yum noodle soup is good. Prawn mee was not impressed. Hainaness chicken is good. Ong choy malaysian style i really like. Cantonese style 2 kind chow mein i like but the raw egg im not too crazy about. Kinda threw me off but i personally like the flavor of this dish. There's a cooking wine taste in it and i like that taste. If you're not a fan of raw eggs and wine then you may not like it. We tried to put the raw egg under the hot noodles to kinda cook it. String bean, eggplant, okra, and bean dish is ok. I'm kookoo for Kookoo Chicken. Okay, that may be an exaggeration. But in terms of Malaysian and pan-Asian fusion, it's surprisingly good. Their menu is extensive, and I'd pit their Malaysian against the likes of Nyonya any day of the week. They have all the classics. We went with: -sizzling stuffed bean curd (deep fried tofu with tofu, pork, and shrimp) -sarang burong (fried taro nest with chicken, shrimp, and veggies) -string bean, eggplant, okra and petai in shrimp paste -Pattaya chicken It was all really good, with the tofu as my favorite. The chicken was in huge portions and crispy, but I couldn't help but think it was just coated in sweet Thai chili sauce that you can get for $3 at any Asian grocery. Nice/clean inside, a good amount of tables, and they do cold/warm drinks. Prices are a tiny bit more than you'd see in Brooklyn Chinatown, but it's worth it. Also love that they have multiple sauce bowls on the table. One was shrimp paste, I think. One was pickled peppers (kind of like pepperoncinis). One was hot sauce. And one was something I can't explain... All in all, I'd definitely return. read more

I saw that there was a new Malaysian restaurant in Bensonhurst, so my fiance and I decided to give it a try since we're so used to Nyonya. Koo Koo Chicken is definitely a lot smaller than your typical Nyonya. However, the decor and atmosphere feels a lot brighter and inviting. We went around February and service was definitely a little slow which irked my fiance. I was happy to see that their menu had different or identical items to Nyonya because there are only a few dishes that my fiance and I typically order and eat. So we ordered the following: Malaysian Iced Coffee - I didn't like that this was served in a bubble tea cup. I would have preferred it to be served in a regular type of glass cup. I like that it was very strong! Roti Canai - A must-have and order at any Malaysian restaurant. The size of the Roti is a decent size. Sarang Burong - This is one of my favorite Malaysian dishes because it's unique and has a lot of delicious ingredients in it - shrimp, chicken, corn, snow peas, and black mushroom topped off with cashew nuts. This dish is surely going to fill you up cause of taro-stuffed nest. Ong-Choy Malaysian Style - This is one of my favorite vegetables whether it's stir-fried in shrimp paste or Chinese bean curd sauce. The Malaysian version of this stir-fried dish has a touch of spice to it, but it was tolerable and delicious! Overall, the food at Koo Koo was decent. Meh. New restaurants on this side of 86 St never last long, so I was surprised to see this place still hanging on by a few strands of thread. Came here with my grandma and we ordered 2 noodle dishes (Stir Fried Pearl Noodles and Cantonese-Style Chow Mein with 2 types of noodles), and some Roti Canais. Their serving sizes are off. Pearl Noodles was rather small for $8.50. However, the Cantonese-Style Chow Mein was served on a big plate and only costs $1 more. The Roti Canai was the best out of the 3 dishes; the curry was actually a tiny bit spicy. Stir Fried Pearl Noodles -- Flavorful. It absorbed all the "Wok hay" as Cantonese people would say (This essentially just means that it was stir-fried on a hot enough wok, which is KEY to a good stir-fry dish). Cantonese-Style Chow Mein (with 2 types of noodles) AKA "Yeen Yerng" in Cantonese -- BLAND! Usually this dish is a dry noodle dish made with 2 types of rice noodles. To our surprise, the dish was brought to us with a wet, scrambled egg goop that was drowning the noodles. The noodles that Koo Koo chose were wide rice noodles and some cheap instant-ramen-type noodles. The noodles were stir-fried first and then smothered in the egg goop. The wide rice noodles had some "wok hay," but I can't say the same for that cheap quality noodle that resembled instant ramen. The egg goop was bland and it ruined the dish. Don't call this Cantonese-style because that's a disgrace to pour that over "Chow Mein" and insist it's Canton food! The chicken slices were bland, the 2 pieces of shrimp were bland... The squid slices were surprisingly tender... but still bland. Also, we tipped below the SUGGESTED 15% that was shown on the bill because I personally tip based on service, food quality, and overall experience. I felt like I had a subpar meal, so I justified that with paying less than the SUGGESTED 15% tip. As we were getting up to leave, one of the waitresses came up to us and asked us to tip at LEAST 15%... Um, okay? I guess the SUGGESTED tip amount isn't actually a suggestion... Anyway, I felt bad because she was begging (she did it in the nicest way possible so kudos for that) for more tips and kept apologizing to us for having to ask for 15% minimum so I just gave it to her to prevent an unnecessary dramatic scene from starting. Alrighty, here's the deal. I don't normally eat hainanese chicken, because I tend to find them rather bland and unflavorful. But I gotta say, the hainanese chicken here is hella juicy and when paired with the chicken rice, it is BOMB. My favorites though, included the roti canai (which had such PERFECT texture) and the fried pearl noodles (no those are not giant bean sprouts, they are huge, delicious, chewy noodles). BUT, if there's one thing that you MUST get, it would have to be the roti tissue. This tower of sweetness breaks into these elegant, crispy flakes that add up to a wonderful dessert to conclude your meal. And if that still isn't enough for you, you cannot go wrong with the pulut hitam (that red bean soup looking thing). TLDR: I'll be back for more. read more

Great for pictures, and great for kids to entertain them. -Homemade Roti Canai $3.95 -- a staple that everyone enjoys. In town with a friend who showed me this corner gem in the depths of Brooklyn. Really awesome and authentic Malaysian food. We ordered a ton of different dishes. Recommend getting the Roti tissue (the thinner, crispier kind), prawn mee, fried pearl noodles, and beef skewers. Friend loves the hainanese chicken but I am just not a big chicken fan (yea friend didn't really think about that when selecting a place with the name Chicken in it), but even so, I thought the chicken was pretty good. I liked the decor of the place, very light, open and clean - always impressed by a clean restaurant bathroom. I've had all the spots before, and I feel that they do it good and they do it well. Highly recommend family style here. The hainese chicken is one of the best I've had, very tender, and the sauces mix really well with it. The clay pot noodle was a hit and so was the stir fry string beans. I am a big fan of Malaysian food and have been happy to see new places popping up in my hood. I have been going to Nayonya for years but its a bit of a walk from my place. PapaRich opened closer but their food aint all that so I was happy to see this spot open just blocks from my place. I am also happy to say the food is pretty good as well. Started with the test for all Malaysian places the roti canai. They do a good version. The pancake not too oily or limp and the curry sauce with a piece of chicken in it was also very good. Right amount of spice. The other test of course is Hainanese chicken the dish of cold chicken with soy sauce. They give you a choice of 3 sizes (1/4 1/2 and full) so it works for any appetite and the sauces on the table add right amount of flavor. We also had the Lady Fingers which is okra with shrimp in a spicy shrimp paste and it was also pretty good. Not overly spicy and the okra were cooked right so they didnt have that slimy texture okra can get. The place is bright and they bring a pot of tea to the table to start which is great. My one complaint is the service is a bit rushed and intrusive. For example they were clearing off dishes while we were still eating and after we paid check they came and took the tip while we were still sitting there which is a major no no. The place wasnt crowded as it was like 3pm on a Friday so not sure why they were rushing us. The food is great so they need to work on etiquette a bit and it will be perfect. read more

Curry mee yong tau foo, the noodle was not the type of noodle I see in all these noodle soup pictures, which is the thick rice noodle, what I got was the egg noodle type, the texture is just not what I had in mind at all. I show the picture to the server and ask if normally it would the rice noodle, he said it should be this egg noodle, if I wanted rice noodle I needed to request that when ordering. No where indicated that info on the Togo paper menu we were given, bummer, the type of noodle ruin it for me. Came here for a my birthdya dinner the other day and I actually never knew this place was here, it's about ten blocks from my house and you would never have guessed it was a Malaysian restaurant based off of her name. It is a lot better than the nyonya on 86(if it's still there?) but it isn't better than the nyonya in Chinatown. We ordered the birds nest(deep fried taro) with seafood and I really enjoyed that dish, my friend however claimed it was a bit too mushy for her preference. We also ordered the runny egg with seafood over hor fun and thst was good but not as good as like cafe's. We also ordered the pepper steak and that one was way too salty for all of our preference, we could barely eat they even with a bowl of rice, service was good and the waiters are friendly. Ok food is good. This review is solely based on their service. We went around 8:30 PM. We ordered our 5 dishes and 3 of the dishes came out pretty quick. After a group of 3 people came in and sat next to us. Everyone in the restaurant seems to know them because they all ran over to greet the people at the table. When we finally saw our 2 missing dishes, they gave it to the table that JUST ARRIVED. We were so confused.. just because you know them doesn't give you the right to give away our dishes... we asked the waiter and he presses on the ipad again and said ok its coming. So they basically just replaced our order because they gave the dishes away to the people they know first. By the time the 2 dishes came it was closing time and they began to spray all the chemical cleaning sprays everywhere. In the end we had to pack it to go! read more

My fave Malaysian restaurant on this side of Brooklyn! Waiters are as attentive as they can be and food is delicious. My go to fishes here are the hainan chicken and sautéed string beans. Chicken is always cooked perfectly, not dry at all! Love the different sauces and pickled jalapeños that are available on the table. My go-to orders are pearl fried noodles, hainanese chicken, and roti canai. I don't even know how to describe the flavor but omg it's just really all good. I usually end up just ordering a whole lot and then doing family-style with my friends. I actually think their desserts are super underrated - I actually look forward to it more than meal. They have this roti tower tissue that's super tall and crispy and also sweet. I've never had anything like that before. And their pulut hitam (rice pudding) and bubor cha cha (dessert soup) is just the perfect way to end (or start) the meal. The food always comes out fresh and the staff is so attentive. It's actually extremely hard to find a good Malaysian restaurant around. After trying tons all over NYC, including Queens, Chinatown and Brooklyn, most are a huge disappointment. Here the food is decent but I have to say the portions are extremely small. Other places charge a couple dollar more but the portion is like Double or close to it. The Sarang Burung was extremely small. Other places that I've eaten at is much bigger with much more seafood inside. The satay chicken is a bit pricey at $9.95 with baby portions of chicken. Most places charge about $7 for chicken pieces double or triple the size. The pad Thai and Singapore mein fun are 1/2 the size that others give. Some dishes are over $30 that I normally get for about $20. The Singapore Mei fun didn't have enough curry flavor and the Ong Choy they used overly mature veggies. Definitely don't go there when you're very hungry. Being generous giving 4 stars. read more

After looking through their menu, I had the Cantonese style chow mein with 2 kinds of noodles. The dish was the watery version of your standard chow mein. The dish itself was pretty tasty, but there was nothing much really to write home about. The sambal and pickled green peppers complemented my meal really well. There were several pieces of Chinese broccoli and shrimp in this dish. I'd suggest eating the crunchy noodles first because if you save it for later, it will absorb all the sauce and everything will be soggy. As for an appetizer, my party and I had the Penang lobak, which is essentially deep fried meat rolls with bean curd sheets. It was delicious with the sweet and tangy sauce provided. We got the drinks but the food order was completely wrong. This place was always busy whenever we tried to go but on this particular Friday with an impending snowstorm and maybe COVID it was pretty empty. It looks like with COVID they took out some tables to put up barriers between each table. I actually prefer this to the cramped seating they had before. To be honest this is considered expansive and unjustifiable in this neighborhood given the portion of food they provided. I always recommend getting the half or whole chicken so you don't end up with the odds and ends. The first time I was here, I wasn't that hungry so I ordered the chicken and rice combo and there were more bones and skin than meat -- so again, half or whole chicken is the way to go. I really like their roti. It's sweet and comes piping hot. You have to eat it quick and the sweetness balances out the spiciness of the curry.
