Scarborough is definitely underrated for their food scene. The corridor, along Midland Ave, between Finch Ave and Steeles Ave, is a melting pot of Chinese and other Asian restaurants. At Midland Ave and McNicoll Ave, there's a plaza serving up some delicious asian bbq and Cantonese cuisine. There's a food court and 2 BBQ takeout joints serving up some some scrumptious chinese bbq meats. I ordered the bbq pork and roasted pork on rice, $6 tax included. It comes with your choice of soup or bottle water or soya milk. We got the soya milk. I like the fact that there is English in their signage for those who can't read Chinese. The roasted pork was seasoned well and with crispy skin. The bbq pork was tender and juicy. The portion is not as big as other bbq places like at First Markham Place. However, you can not beat the tremendous value and quality of the food. If you're looking for some affordable chinese bbq eats that won't hurt your wallet, give this place a try. This place is locally renowned and has astounding deals on Chinese BBQ products.   It's basically a small carryout stand that occupies a small space in a strip mall.  We picked up a couple of carryout lunch boxes, one of their numerous $6 CAD boxes and the other for $9 CAD.  They were not only delicious and plentiful on the meats and rice, they also each come with a drink, and we chose a sweet tofu dessert drink!  Check the photos for what you can get here at these prices!   The bald owner (thus the Chinese name by translation) has been at it for a while and is sort of a local legend. read more

Wow are these prices for BBQ meats on rice so amazingly low! And super delicious too! One meat on steamed rice with steamed broccoli is only $5. Two meats is $6! I got BBQ pork which was juicy and roasted pork with the beautiful, crispy skin! Tasted so good. Service was fast but was difficult at first communicating what I wanted to the Chinese staff. But figured it out for next time. And it's a tiny place so it's only take out. Definitely coming back as it reminds me of old days in Chinatown in Toronto and getting low deals for delicious lunches! These days, I don't know anywhere you can get a $6 lunch box that includes tax (aside from the bbq place next door). Rice, your choice of protein, and some veggies. First time actually going with my dad here... and holy sheet this place is BUSYYYY. The $5 rice box deal is pretty much what 75% of the customers here were ordering. That's INCLUDING tax and a drink (usually soy milk??). Try and find a better deal anywhere else, I dare you. Even McD's $5 value meal is more expensive cus you have to pay tax. The BBQ they have here is pretty decent, the cost definitely trumps any complaints I have. By 6:30ish, items were starting to sell out - like the chicken and roasted baby pig. But according to my pops, if you come before they close they usually give you alot cus they just wanna get rid of what they have. Wanted to try their roasted bbq pork. Ordered 1 pound and ended up paying 26$. I hesitated given the cost but due to line up, I walked out to the parking lot. This is one of the best Hong Kong BBQ place in Toronto. While I totally agree that their customer service isn't the greatest, especially the lady working next to the bald guy chopping the meat, but this is the Hong Kong style way of doing things and they just want to be as efficient as possible since there is ALWAYS a line up! Their $5 lunch boxes are a totally hit! It is cheap AND it includes a drink. There's nowhere else you can get BBQ meat with that price. The meats are delicious, not too salty so I always come here to either get the BBQ pork, the roasted pork or the chicken. They also serve other marinated things like Tofu and other meats but they always run out. On another day, I got their sweet and sour pork for $5. It was filled to the brim but the taste was only mediocre. This plaza is probably one of most concentrated plaza of Chinese BBQ places in the GTA with 3 stores all in the same area but of the three, Kong Kee always seems to be the busiest and the main reason is their $5 boxed lunches. For $5 flat you get 2 choices of BBQ meat, veggies, rice and a choice of drink or soup with your meal. Seriously? No wonder why they are always busy! I can feed my entire family and still have money left over for a movie!! The skin of the roast pork is really crispy and the meat tender. The BBQ pork is also very good and not too fatty which I like. It's not as good as my beloved Kum Hong in Richmond Hill but for the price, the value is excellent for what you get. For $5 you can have 1 kind of BBQ and rice, plus soy milk/soup/soft drink. It is really good deal! I had char siu with rice. The meat is very tasty, not too much fat. Portion is huge for the money you paid. I also get half roasted duck ($10.5) , they are delicious too. Skin is crispy and meat is fatty (I prefer fatty duck). Owners are very nice people too. It's small, a little dingy, take out only, and SUPER cheap. We're talking $6 a pound for BBQ pork cheap. You can't find a better price nowadays. They have a $5 lunch special that includes a drink! This is the main reason why the line ups are crazy here. With prices like this, you expect quality to take a hit. It's actually pretty good. It's not the best I've ever had, but it's almost half the price of some of the best I've had in the city. This place has become my go to for Chinese BBQ currently. You can't beat the value this place gives you. Like I said, this place is old school. Right up the guy doing the cutting. This guy is a little rough around the edges, but he just want's to keep the line going. If you take too much time, he'll just move on to the next person in line. Just don't waste his time, and you'll be just fine. Some people might be put off, but he's not doing it to you personally. If you can take the old school atmosphere, you'll love this place. Can't complain for that price as people were ordering at least 2 combos each. There's a reason the line goes out the door a lot of the time, other than that there's no room inside for people to line up. The prices here are very good, and the food is quite tasty. I have other Chinese BBQ stores I prefer to get my roasted pig, my char siu, and my roasted duck from, but this is a very decent substitute when I can't make it to those stores. Why Kong Kee gets the 5 star is because they have a Chiu Chow style duck that is the same price as their roasted duck ($10.50/half or $21/whole) and it's about as close to a legit Chiu Chow style duck as I've ever found in a Chinese BBQ store. Most of them say they have it, but it tastes like soy sauce duck. They even have the vinegar on the side! Whenever I'm craving that duck (basically whenever I think about it), I'm going to come get some. Fun story. In Chinese, the name of this store is Bald-headed man BBQ. Going to confirm what Joanne says and indeed we call it literally "Shiny Head Dude" aka bald-headed man because the butcher is indeed totally bald. I've never been in the area for lunch but I hear it's very popular because of how good the price is for what you get - a takeout box is about $5. I've eaten one before and can confirm that it is quite a good value for quantity and quality and even variety. You get two meats in one box with veggies as well. The BBQ pork is quite tender (Ho Ho's tends to be a bit drier) and the roast duck and pig is quite good as well. Not much to say. It's nice to just listen to them talk to their regulars. I like Ho Ho bbq too but don't like the layout during this time as too many people squishing by you literally body to body and their lineups moves very slow. So Kong Kee is my go to now, tastes great and great service. You can also buy soup bones for $2/bag. They also have limited supply of roast goose in the summer. read more

There's lower quantity of roast pork and rice than expected and soy drink is in a circular container, instead of the traditional cup form, which made it hard to drink out of. In comparison to Ho Ho Barbeque, which is next door, they provide more roast pork and rice and soy drink is in a traditional cup form for $7.35 including tax. Service is rushed as it is extremely busy during lunch hours and a long lineup can be seen. The interior is squishy so you may have to wait outside, which may not be ideal when weather is bad. In comparison to Ho Ho Barbeque, which is usually not busy when Kong Kee Barbeque is busy, they would ask you if that's enough rice and if you want fatty or lean roast pork. And you have the option of veggie or tofu. Given that I received some fatty portion of roast pork at Kong Kee Barbeque and the veggie had less taste than Ho Ho Barbeque, I would say that I enjoyed the overall experience at Ho Ho Barbeque much better. There are 3 Chinese BBQ joints at this sketchy plaza. The bald guy in the picture doing the chopping I think used to run the Vans BBQ place at FMP. Since they are new, I am going to say that opening a BBQ joint when there are already 2 existing ones in the same mall and is either extremely stupid or very ballsy. I am still scratching my head as to why the lineups and why the glowing reviews, sometimes I think people just do not have any taste. I had the roast pork and duck for $5 deal and was very disappointed. The duck was limp and flavourless, and pork was dry and bland. It tasted like the meat you get at a Foody Mart or Bestco. The only reason there is a lineup at this place is the ridiculously low prices. But low prices means low quality meat as you get what you pay for. They must be sourcing their meat from sketchy suppliers because there is no way you can make a profit on a $5 meal deal. I tried them out of curiosity, but from now on I am sticking with Ho Ho BBQ next door as they are way tastier and worth the extra $2.
