I was running an errand in the Maple Leaf area, and I love Hawaiian food, so I decided to try Kona Kitchen! Ha ha I didn't do my usual research beforehand, so I panicked and parked on a random neighborhood street. The restaurant does have a dedicated parking lot, but the entrance is on 5th Ave NE. The inside is huge and they have tons of tables. Someone greeted me right away and showed me to a table. I went there for breakfast and they have a pretty extensive menu with omelets, benedicts, pancakes, biscuits & gravy, etc. I ordered the Spam Benny which is spam and poached eggs on an English muffin topped with Hollandaise sauce and served with hash browns. I came into Seattle for work and I deliberately came all the way here as soon I got in the rental car. I chose Kona Kitchen for two reasons: 1) I love Hawaiian food 2) The owner is Chozen in the Miyagiverse. That was enough of a reason to drive from SeaTac. The exterior is pretty nondescript and I had to pull a U-turn but they had plenty of parking. It was fairly early in the evening but I walked in and it was empty. I got seated in a little corner table and after looking at the menu I immediately knew what I was going to get: spam musubi and loco moco. The musubi was made right. I've been to places where they advertise 'fresh made musubi' but that's actually a negative. I honestly think it tastes BETTER when it's been tightly saran wrapped, otherwise it's a loose mess. The musubi here was wrapped, a little too sweet for me but otherwise enjoyable. I figured I would get my sodium needs filled with the loco moco. They do a BYO option here and they say what the traditional kind is, maybe if I went that route I would have been more satisfied. I swapped out white rice for fried and instead of the hamburger patty I went with linguica and I got a side of mac salad. I was expecting to gladly need extra water but while the gravy was good the pork just wasn't doing it for me. I flagged down the server to get some Tabasco to literally spice it up for me but it still lacked that salty kick that I'm used to; the kind where I expect an imminent coronary. Visiting from Portland and stopped in for a late lunch. We were greeted and seated right away. Service was okay, a little slow. Our waitress had a weird, dry sense of humor and was a bit awkward. We all felt like it took awhile for us to receive our food. We saw other people get their order before ours and we didn't even order a lot. The restaurant is a bit darker, not a lot of lighting. If you come here on the weekend, be prepared for a wait! There is parking in the back, and the rest is street parking. The ambiance is like old school Hawaiian, it's really quaint! The staff is also amazing. The kalbi ribs were really well flavored and it was a decent portion of them! However my husband was a bit disappointed with the kanak attack because the portions of meat were small and most of them over cooked. This place was quite busy during lunchtime on Saturday as expected. There was a parking lot with a good amount of space which was nice. The portion size for all of our plates was pretty big. I got the kalua pig and cabbage which was very salty and flavorful. I preferred the korean chicken more because of the crispy outside texture and moist inside. There are a few Hawaiian restaurants spread out in the greater Seattle area, and this one is in closer proximity for those in the north Seattle / UW area. Overall, this place is a bit overrated. We went here around 10:30am on a Saturday and there was already a 15 min wait, and it seemed significantly busier when we left around 11:30am. A lot of the seating is closed down, maybe due to waitstaff shortages, with only a fraction of the restaurant in service. We tried the Kanak Attack lunch special and loco moco with hamburger steak. The kanak attack had a variety of meats - spam, Portuguese sausage, teriyaki beef, and mochiko chicken, along with 2 scoops of rice and mac salad. I liked the mochiko chicken a lot - juicy and flavorful. The Portuguese sausage had a little bit of spiciness although a bit salty. Spam was grilled decently, a bit on the drier side. Teriyaki beef is nothing special, but it was part of the lunch special. The egg rolls are the vegetable egg rolls that are usually present in Chinese takeout. The rice and mac salad were just okay. The loco moco was a bit tasteless with the gravy, and the hamburger steak was a bit on the drier side. We felt a little duped when the menu said the loco moco already comes with egg and hamburger steak, but we got charged an extra $4 for just one piece of hamburger steak. They were out of few things, or only serving on Sunday, so I recommend to ask them what do they have on the menu. My fiancé was disappointed that they only serve Lau Lau on Sunday! Their menu selection is huge including lunch menu, so I recommend to do little bit homework before heading to this restaurant. This is an update from reviews posted back in 2015 and 2019, for a recent visit on 1/27/23. The Homie and I finished running errands in the Northgate area and realized it's time for dinner. We wanted something filling on this Friday evening that didn't require reservations. We ended up at Kona Kitchen in Seattle's Maple Leaf neighborhood. It was a bit of a wait as no surprise it was bustling for dinner service. We were finally seated at a four top. Kona Kitchen is a no frills, well worn family indie, full of memorabilia and ephemera throughout the restaurant walls and shelves surrounding the dining room tables and booths. Both of us selected the Loco Moco with hamburger patty, gravy, and fried egg. Instead of steamed rice, we had the fried rice per the recommendation of our friendly wait person. The Homie also added a side order of saimin. Huge, generous portions. Perfect comfort food. We had to pack up leftover portions of our respective fried rice, need to save room for dessert, of course! I inquired earlier and verified indeed there were guava cake slices available. We split a tasty square of guava cake. So satisfying and not cloying sweet. I rarely ever find kalbi up to my grandma's homemade standard, but I think I this is it. First of all, let's talk ambiance. Kona Kitchen is a family owned and operated Hawaiian and Japanese restaurant, where family photos and decor line the walls, giving it that special, homey feel. The staff is welcoming and patient, and take the time to answer any questions you may have. Next up, the food. They're known for their delicious Hawaiian plate meals (which I LOVE) but when I saw they had kalbi, I had to give it a try. The kalbi (Korean bbq short ribs) were exactly how they should be: a flavorful balance between sweet and savory and smoky from the grill and tender and chewy with just the perfect amount of crispy char on the edges. Oh and naturally, I had to order a side of their kimchi - delicious. They also have brunch items that are your regular breakfast foods with a Hawaiian/Japanese twist (I wish I had room to try everything tbh). We ordered: Kalua pig nachos: the chips were just plain store-bought tortilla chips, and the pork was a bit too salty, but still yummy, (3/5). Da Kanak Attack lunch plate: so many things and they were all delicious, the spam and sausage were a bit overdone and dry but the rest were pretty juicy and flavorful. Decent mac salad too, (4/5). Loco moco: very solid! No complaints :-) (5/5) Lychee cocktail: okay yes we were day drinking, no judgments here. This was one of the best tasting cocktails I've had in a while and only $7.50! Staff needs to step it up big time. Came in today 8/6/25 between 4-5pm and it took quite some time to get service even though it wasn't busy at all. All we get was a "sorry, it's swamped" when it obviously was not. Asked for Diet Coke, they forgot and had to be reminded. Asked for ketchup, they forgot and had to be reminded. Tried to wave down servers but they were too busy talking and laughing in the back to notice. I also watched them forgot about a couple that was seated around 20 min after us. Couple had to make obvious eye contact with one of the servers in order to receive service. Ordered corned beef hash and my food was burnt. Been coming here for many years and super disappointed with the service lately. On a recent trip to Vancouver we travelled south to hit up Seattle for a night. Wanting to try something different, we found Kona Kitchen - a Hawaiian food restaurant. I was excited to have loco moco and roast pork amongst many things. Personally, I've never been to Hawaii but I heard great things about the food from people who have. I'm no expert on Hawaiian food but something about a hamburger on rice with gravy and an egg just speaks to me. So of course I got the loco moco and the rest of the table ordered a variety of dishes including roast pork, huge combo plates, masubi and so much more. One thing we all agreed on was the huge portions. Very much worth the prices. The downside was the roast pork which was very very salty. On the plus side it was very soft and moist. Overall the food was good but not the greatest. Good enough to try out some Hawaiian dishes though something tells me it would taste 100x better in Hawaii itself. read more

The AC was blowing and it was cold outside, while freezing it took forever to order. We left cold and hungry.

Poor dine in experience. Okay food. Takeout recommended. Not on my repeat list. The front area had multiple long tables they could have sat us at but we were offered the bar area instead which was a gross mistake. We were swarmed with fruit flies for the entirety of the meal. Fruit flies were buzzing around the food, landing on the wall and the table. It was enough to make me lose my appetite. The food safety sign said this place is just "Okay". Table was also sticky and wobbly and the stack of coasters underneath the table leg were not enough to stabilize it. Good but not great. The loco moco is decent, but nothing to write home about. The korean chicken is mid at best. I mean the bites of chicken are ok but all they give you is white rice and no sauce? I don't understand why anyone would want to sit down and eat a ball of plain rice that doesn't go with the rest of the meal? The katsu was very bad because it was so tough, dry, and had no flavor. The pork and cabbage tasted ok, but the pork was still tough. The coconut cake was nothing special, it was basically just a slice of regular vanilla cake. If I went again I think I would only order something easy to make, like the loco moco. read more

This is THE spot for Hawaiian food in Seattle! Ideal for brunch, Kona Kitchen offers "a tempting array of Hawaiian and Japanese dishes prepared with the care of a home-cooked meal". There are many great menu items to choose from and the best part is their portion size because they serve up hearty meals. I ordered the Loco Moco and loved that I was able to customize the dish with a bed of fried rice. The hamburger patty, fried egg and brown gravy further rounded out this delicious and traditional Hawaiian dish. The Spam Musubi was solid too, although I didn't have any room left in my tummy to eat it but it was a nice treat I saved for later. Staff was friendly and I appreciate that their servers were masked and there were partitions separating each booth. This demonstrates to me that they value the safety of their customers and employees. Pretty good portions here with tasty food. It can be a little salty but I personally enjoy the saltiness so it was fine. However, a few confusions (expanded on later) drop this spot from above average to average because we added money to lose food. Would be back but nothing made me crave this spot particularly, it's just a solid spot with solid food and solid portions but nothing spectacular. We ordered the Waimea and added $2 to make a customized plate. This customization allows you to add 1 extra carb (rice, baked potato, mashed potatoes, or fries) and 1 salad (steamed veggies, green salad, or mac salad). However, when we received our order the original 2 scoops of rice and mac salad were replaced by fries and steamed veggies. We asked about this and were told that we substituted the rice and mac salad for the fries and veggies. This doesn't make sense because rice and mac salad are options, so I wouldn't pay $2 to get one scoop of rice over two and replace mac salad with mac salad. This $2 price is also reflected in the receipt, so we were definitely charged to substitute food not add and ultimately, we're paying more for less food. However, on the bright side, the meat in the Waimea was really good. The beef was sliced thinly as stated and very tender, so easy to chew. Also surprisingly flavorful as it didn't look saucy or anything. Alongside that, the katsu was tender and juicy as well. Then the Lau Lau Plate was pretty good, but when they say Lomi Salmon, you kind of expect a fair amount of salmon. Instead, they mix it with pico de gallo on the side and it's barely any fish. There were like three tiny cubes of salmon that looked just like the small cuts of tomato. They may as well omit the salmon from the description because it's insignificant and irrelevant. The amount didn't enhance the dish at all so it really was just pork lau lau with rice and mac salad. If I knew this, I definitely would have ordered another item. read more

The wait between getting seated and ordering was surprisingly long, as I had decided what to order when I was waiting to get seated. However, the wait time between ordering and getting the food was standard. Not sure why I started on the wait time, but it was something to note here because it is busy. And it is busy for a reason! It's a fun alternative to your standard "American" diner. I much prefer the menu here! I was a huge fan of the loco moco and loved that you could customize it. It went with the classic hamburger patty over fried rice, as it just hits the spot for me. I really enjoyed it overall but I did find it a bit dry for my liking. I wonder if I could have asked for it to be less cooked through. I'm also curious to try other meats with my loco moco instead. I found the other dishes I tried to be alright. The spam musubi fell a bit flat for me. I'm used to the rice being more seasoned and having some flavor itself (though I can't say I know what is traditional). I felt the rice in the musubi was very plain and left me hunting for more flavor overall. I also sampled some of the lunch combo plate. On a recent Saturday, at the end of a busy week I found the breakfast cupboard was bare. I walked down the street to Kona Kitchen. They were doing a brisk business. This one was passive, as the other diners and I both remained in our neutral corners. Kona Kitchen specializes in Hawaiian-style food, but it is only part of a large diner style menu. The breakfast section is large & varied, it includes many breakfast options: Omelettes, Eggs Benedict, Egg Combinations Pancakes, Waffles, French Toast. All egg dishes offer a choice of hash browns, rice or pancakes. I love that! I chose a bacon, mushroom & cheese(Monterrey Jack is the default cheese option) with avocado on top. It arrived well-prepared, with a large portion of crispy hash browns and toasted sourdough bread, which could have been more toasted, to my taste. I ordered decaf coffee, which was fresh, hot and of good quality. The young man who served me was competent friendly and attentive, what more does one need from a server. It's a casual place with a large seating area and sufficient natural light. Prices are reasonable by current standards. The crowd on this late Saturday morning was a mix of Brunch/Lunch diners. Maaaan we tore this food UP!! The saimin and musubi were great starters. For those not familiar with saimin it's like the Hawaiian version of ramen. You can get it anywhere pretty much in Hawaii even at McDonald's and 7-11. I loved the saimin the only thing I wish was switched out was the egg for the fish cake. It was so good though that we ordered a second bowl. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see the spam in the musubi fried crispy. So many places leave the spam looking undercooked and floppy- gross! Having the spam nice and crispy made this musubi so much better. Now onto the entrees. We had the Tonkatsu (pork katsu) and teriyaki beef combo plate and the beef stew plate. The Tonkatsu was ok I would've preferred chicken katsu but they don't allow substitutions. The Teri beef though was so damn good. Next time I'm going to order just a Teri beef plate. The Teriyaki flavor was so rich and flavorful. Their Mac salad is also good. Much better than L&L Mac salad. The beef stew was incredible. Talk about comfort food, it hit the spot! We came here on a Saturday night at around 7pm and were seated right away for a party of two. The interior has a homey feel and is definitely a neighborhood place with a lot of locals. There is both lot parking and street residential parking. We ordered the loco moco ($17.29), da kanak attack ($15.99), and the spam musubi ($3.29). Something that we found out was that the initial base price for the loco moco white rice ($8.29) does NOT include a hamburger patty so if you want that on it you'll have to pay an extra $3 to include it. I did that and also added katsu chicken for $6 extra. The loco moco itself was good; the katsu didn't have much flavor on its own but with the gravy it's better. The hamburger patty is one of those store-bought frozen patties but in a way that's what makes it that comfort food we all love. The da kanak attack is like a combination where you can try different meats. My favorite of the four was by far the mochiko chicken because there's good flavor on the skin and it reminded me of this fried chicken that I ate growing up. My next favorite was the teri beef which had good flavor but was a bit tough to eat. Next was the portuguese sausage which was okay and was slightly too salty even for me. Last was the spam which is just spam. The spam musubi was just okay; I thought the spam to rice ratio was a bit off and I think it could've had less rice. I read a couple other reviews mentioning the saltiness of the food. I could taste the saltiness and although it was almost too salty even for me I could see why others might think that it's too salty. Could be better but the quality of food was lacking. Pretty bland in my opinion. I had a loco moco there and I had the hardest driest patty on my rice. It was a small patty and was barely any yolk in my egg. Mostly Hawaiian spots provide free Mac on the side but I had to ask for it on the side it was kind of weird. L&L in Tacoma would've been better than what I had here lmao. read more
