Our service was great... especially with how busy they were. I had crab ragoons, crab salad, the special roll called the Lady Bug and fried cheesecake. Really liked the ragoons qith a good amount of cream cheese in a pastry. The Lady Bug roll was delish. The crab salad was different, but good. I believe I expected chunks of crab and it was shredded. Koi Sushi & Hibachi is an AYCE Sushi & Hibachi establishment located in Durham, NC. The value you get here is really good for what you're paying. The fish overall ranges from OK to not the greatest but for dinner you're only paying $26 or so before taxes and tip. They have your standard nigiri, standard rolls, cooked rolls, specialty rolls, and hand rolls. You can also choose from a few appetizers and their hibachi offerings. They also do a la carte and takeout. The service here is fairly good as my waiter was checking in on me every 10-15 min or so. My only problem is it's very tiny inside and tables are nestled so close to each other so you're almost within arms reach of another table. Gets very busy so there will definitely be a wait depending upon the time you go so plan for that but you can walk around the Whole Foods around the corner or around Duke East Campus across the street while waiting. read more

My husband and I came for lunch and we did the all you can eat. This was well worth the price at only $16.99 per adult for lunch AYCE. The restaurant has a pleasant ambiance and our seats were comfortable for the long meal. We split 7 special rolls between us and all the sushi was fresh and delicious! I was really impressed at the high quality of the sushi given the price. We tried the following rolls: Rock N Roll, Phoenix, Crazy California, Dinosaur, Koi, Volcano on Fire, and La Mamacita. My favorite rolls were Crazy California, Phoenix, and Volcano on Fire. The avocado on these rolls was particularly yummy. The special rolls are large, so if you are worried about finishing everything to avoid getting charged per piece, I recommend only ordering 1-2 rolls per person at a time. We also shared Gyoza and he got Hibachi Steak. The gyoza was good and the piece of steak I tried was tasty, but I preferred the sushi to these items so I'll likely save room for more sushi next time. read more

So I came here solo for dinner and it was my second time coming in, last time it was for lunch. I opted for the al you can eat menu. I started with miso soup and a house salad while my two sushi rolls were being prepared. I remember the soup being better last time and I enjoyed the salad with ginger dressing. I ordered the koi roll and really enjoyed it, the name of the second roll I ordered escapes me it had a lil heat to it. My server was average, I do wish that she would have offered to refill my water but she never did. Went for dinner with a friend and left full and satisfied. Enjoyed the wide variety of sushi offered and each roll was pretty good. I did wish the hot kiss roll (bottom), marked as deep fried, had more batter and crisp to it. Crab rangoons were nice and crispy and had a good filling ratio. Hibachi was pretty standard. The gyozas were average and would probably skip next time. All of the side sauces were good and added nice flavor to the rolls. Servers were attentive and quick to bring out our orders and refill drinks. However, you do need everyone in your party to be present in order to be seated. It isn't the largest restaurant and I can see how it might feel crowded when it is fully booked or seated. Similar to Mr. Tokyo in CH and nice to have a Durham AYCE option. I'm incredibly disappointed with my experience at Koi Sushi & Hibachi and feel it's important to share. I used to be a frequent customer, but a few months ago I had a Grubhub order that was very poor in quality. I reached out at the time and was told the order could be remade. When I later came in, I was informed it had already been refunded through Grubhub, which I wasn't aware of, since Grubhub doesn't always notify customers right away when refunds are approved. I accepted that information calmly and left without any issue. Because of that experience, I hadn't been back in a while. Today, I decided to give the restaurant another chance and brought a friend who wanted to try it. Unfortunately, we were immediately turned away by the manager on shift, Connie. She recognized me, accused me of trying to get free food in the past, and refused to serve us altogether. This was based on a clear misunderstanding from months ago that was never handled negatively on my end. I was respectful then, and I came back today with good intentions. Being denied service like that, especially in front of a guest I brought, was incredibly rude, and completely unprofessional. Connie was dismissive, accusatory, and even refused to provide contact information for management other than general email. This is not how customers should be treated, especially loyal ones who are willing to give a business another chance. My friends and I had a very upsetting experience at Koi sushi. Service and food quality has gone down heavily over the past few years. Much of our food did not show up until we requested 2-3 times for each item on the AYCE option, and came out warm and very flavorless. I also ordered hibachi which didn't come for at least an hour and a half after requesting our waitress 4 times. It was finally brought out along with our CHECKS, I was unable to finish the entire entree as our meal was already complete. When I went to check out the owner of the restaurant was very rude about telling us about the extra charge for the leftover hibachi, even though it came out after our meal was done and lukewarm and stale. We tried to argue with the owner about it who was very rude. Whole experience was ridiculous and they hold you hostage with this all you can eat BS and the extra charges doing anything to squeeze an extra dollar out of you for any grains of food left on the table. I will not be coming back their service and food quality has slowly been decreasing over the past few years and they have lost a loyal customer Terrible food, service, and even worse scammy rude insane behavior from the manager. Starting to think this place is lowkey a scam! The food was ok, not my favorite but it wasn't horrible. They gave larger portions than described. We ordered the all you can eat, the menu said each roll came with 6 pieces. Most of my rolls came with 10+ pieces. Which would typically be ok but their rule is, if anything is left over you will be charged, which I respect but I would have ordered differently if I had of known half on my rolls would come with well over 6 pieces. AYCE sushi is usually hit or miss, but the dinner I had at Koi sushi last night was defintley a hit! I was impressed by the wide variety of menu options and I liked that they included appetizers, soups, salads, and hibachi in the AYCE deal. Service was great, the waiter was super nice and helpful and the food came out pretty quick. Although this wasn't the best sushi I've ever had, I was pretty impressed by the quality of the nigiri and the rolls. Everything I ordered was fresh and flavorful. Taste wise, the sushi was comparable or perhaps better than some of the much more expensive sushi restaurants that I've been to in the past. Great place for all you can eat sushi in Durham. It was very similar to Mr Tokyo in CH, but most of the food we got was just a little less tasty. For example, the crab rangoons / fried wontons aren't too good at koi but they're amazing at Mr Tokyo, and the eel wasn't very full of flavor. The rolls we got were all great though. read more

So happy that Durham has gained an AYCE sushi option! I enjoyed my experience here for dinner, but I have to say it didn't like blow my mind. I thought they had a good amount of selections for a reasonable price. I got the: - Hibachi (with steak, chicken, shrimp, vegetables, no rice): Pretty standard, everything was cooked well. Love that they let you customize proteins and whether or not you want veggies or rice. Only note is that I prefer yum yum sauce that's a bit thicker in consistency. - Tofu skin nigiri & Tamago nigiri: Decent, didn't really stand out to me. - Sweet potato roll: Probably my favorite thing that I ate. The sweet potato was deep fried, providing the perfect crunch. The portion was really good (bites weren't huge like chef special rolls). Only negative was that I got a class roll instead of the hand roll I had selected. - Koi roll (shrimp tempura, cream cheese & cucumber with spicy crabmeat & crunch on top, eel sauce & yum yum sauce): This was okay; tbh I got it bc it was the only chef special roll without avocado (might be a hot take lol), but I learned that I don't like cream cheese in sushi either haha. The roll is quite big, which could be a plus or minus depending on personal preference. Nice ambiance and service (food came out at a good pace). We went on a Friday night, had 4 people in our party, and were seated almost immediately. My daughter is 3 years old and because my husband and I got the AYCE option, she was charged 8.99, which was fine. We ordered her fried rice only and the plate came out to be a full size adult meal. They told us we'll be charged extra if she did not finish it. How could anyone think a 3 year old could finish a full size adult meal is beyond me. My husband and I tried to eat it but even we couldnt finish it (see pic of the final result). Next, we had two pieces of a roll left but asked for the check to save time. Plus, it's brought to you, includes many appetizers and nigiri, as well as hibachi. I enjoyed the salmon, tuna, and eel in different rolls. I would suggest skipping the spicy tuna- it's a strange mash, often mixed with crunchy filling. The handrolls are large! We also had some miso soup, gyoza, spring rolls, and seaweed salad. The variety really rounds out the meal. We did not try the hibachi, but the portion looked like a smaller size. That makes sense since people are also eating other food at AYCE. Compared to previous menus, the number of special roll options decreased, and sashimi is not on the sheet. Service: Wonderful service from Megan. Shoutout to Megan! Very sweet and attentive. I decided to check this place out since some of my friends wanted to go. When we got there, there was about a 30-40 minute wait. They said they would text us when our table was ready but we never got a text (likely wrote down the wrong number). Fortunately we checked in around the 30-40 minute mark and got seated. Depending on what day/time you go, you can only do all you can eat sushi. Just something to note. When we put in our first order, there were a couple sushi rolls missing. We had to follow up multiple times before we got the missing rolls. We could have ordered them during the next round of orders but did not want double the sushi because they charge you for any leftover pieces. When we placed our second order, we were missing a good amount of our order and the sushi was taking abnormally long (20-30 minutes to prepare). Normally we would be okay with this, but since it was nearing closing time, we did not feel like we got our true value for what we ordered. The food there was okay. Some of the rolls definitely come with more meat/seafood but you have to figure out which those are. Most of the rolls are primarily rice (seems more than other all you can eat sushi places). The appetizers were good but the rolls themselves were just okay. Atmosphere inside was okay. I thought it was strange they put the pieces of paper with the orders on top of the sushi rolls when they are ready (may be a sanitary issue). The staff was generally friendly. For the price point, this place is not bad, but due to the multiple rolls we did not get, we do not think it was worth the price. Koi Sushi conveniently located in the plaza on the corner of ninth/main street close to Duke campus. It offers plenty of parking space up front. The interior is spacious and tidy, and the service is very friendly and attentive. Their AYCE menu covers most of the a la carte items, although the portions are smaller compared to ordering a la carte (typical for AYCE sushi places in the area). The nigiris and sashimi taste fresh, and the rolls are well-made. While the variety isn't huge or particularly creative, the quality is excellent for the price point of $24 per person (and even less for lunch)! Koi is okay. Not bad, not great. I know authentic, super fresh sushi is a lot to ask for in Durham (although M Sushi exists), but this place is below average. I stick with the simple rolls that can't be messed up--spicy tuna, salmon and avocado--and those are fine. However, I've tried to branch out to more specialty rolls and they always fall short. Way too much sauce on the top and filled with sub par ingredients on the inside. I've also tried their hibachi, thinking maybe THAT is where they shine: it's worse than the sushi. I originally really liked Vine but the quality had gone down as they began to offer delivery. My experience with Koi (in terms of sushi) was not that different. Much like Rock N Roll sushi, it's quantity over quality (thought I do think the prices are very reasonable especially if you are hungry). My salad was partially frozen as if the lettuce had just come out of a bag in the freezer. I also got the fried wontons which could have been made in a microwave. The sushi was decent, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. I didn't try the hibachi but it looked good. They get you because they charge you for any leftover pieces you order and don't eat (but you can take them to go). I should add the caveat that I went very recently after they opened so they may be working out some kinks. The service was great and very fast. Our waitress explained the process and advised us to order slowly to not have leftovers. When I did, she clearly explained what the extra charges would be (only a few dollars). read more

"Sushi & hibachi, and all-you-can-eat option, near Ninth Street in Durham" Right next to the Whole Foods on Broad Street in Durham, and super close to Duke University's east campus, is this new restaurant, just opened a few days ago. It sits in the spot where Vine Sushi used to be, so the theme is maintained. However, unlike Vine, this offers you sushi, various hibachi entrees, and all-you-can-eat options. We arrived on a Friday evening at just before 6pm, and the place was very empty. That said, they did JUST open maybe 5 days ago, so word hasn't gotten out yet. They do have an a la carte menu, but we all opted for the all-you-can-eat options. Their menu says that's $15 for lunch (11-3pm) and $24 for dinner. There is a small catch (often true at other AYCE places)-- if you can't finish your food, you have to pay for what's left on your plate, but it's not much-- maybe 50 cents per piece (and you can then take it home). I ordered only the crabmeat salad, a black pepper tuna roll, and a Mt. Fuji roll. My dining mates ordered a lot more, including the gyoza. Note: you can keep ordering, so my advice is not to order too much at once... you'll have many more opportunities to get more if still hungry. Service was VERY friendly and attentive. We felt really welcomed. We got our first food quickly. The crab salad was very tasty. I LOVED the black pepper tuna roll, and the Mt Fuji roll was fine (the tuna pieces were better than the salmon ones). Everything tasted fresh. All of us noted that the items labeled as spicy on the menu were not particularly so (unless you have a very sensitive palate). My dining mates really liked their gyoza a lot too as well as the hibachi steak & chicken (note, that was a rather small serving). I was smart not to order too much-- the rolls are LONG. I couldn't even quite finish my two rolls, but my son finished off the last few bites. My wife had to buy some of hers off as leftovers, but they were very generous and undercharged-- it was 8 pieces and they only charged $6. Was it the best sushi I ever had? It was good, but not the best. That said, you wouldn't expect "best" at an AYCE place. I think it was better than conveyer belt sushi like Rockin' Rolls (which is fine). And it's a lot closer to where we live than Mr. Tokyo in Chapel Hill. Overall, I'd come back. It felt "appropriately priced" for what we got, and the service was excellent. A large group of my friends went out to eat last night at Koi Sushi & Hibachi. The restaurant isn't very big so having a large party required us to wait for a while for a table, which is fine. Our server seemed overwhelmed but I would be too if I had a table 13 people. The menu is easy to follow and the instructions to order were visibly printed on the menu as well. The quality of the sushi was good, presentation was solid, and everything was tasty. I would definitely go back, but not with a huge party haha. My husband and I ordered the Koi, Volcano, Mt. The very first thing I ate was something called a salmon flower... Little did we know ( table of three ) you can only order ONE per person for the entirety of your dining experience. Needless to say we started off on a high note. Overall a tasty experience. Crowded but flowing, the service is pretty paced and some items that we ordered never arrived. Hand rolls use a LOT of nori, which I have a hard time with, but the flavors are good. Rolls are definitely huge. Love the shrimp tempura, especially paired with the egg roll dipping sauce - thai chili? Did not like the limitations on certain items or the lack of dessert being included. A scoop of ice cream would have been great. Not as many appetizer-esque options as other establishments, but still a big menu. Bathroom is small which makes it very easy to get hit by a door when waiting for a stall. Dining area ambience is busy, very open, and tables are relatively close together. read more

The appetizers were just a sad pile of fried junk with zero flavor. The only thing that was remotely decent was the hibachi, and even that wasn't enough to save this disaster of a place. And let's talk about the scammy fees -- they charged us just to ENTER the restaurant, then slapped us with extra charges for taking our leftovers home. Yup, if you don't finish your food, they charge you as if you ordered it as takeout. Make it make sense. Our waitress was so incompetent she couldn't even give us our bill -- had to get the manager to do it for her. That alone tells you everything you need to know about the staff here. I'd hate to see this place on a busy dinner rush... As far as their rolls go...I really like how thin they layered the rice on the rolls, the amount of fish is kinda low and I don't get like "super fresh" vibes from the fish but nothing to worry about I don't think. Also, probably a bit of a misnomer on the menu.
