Tried this place after several friends recommended it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but the interior was very different from what I anticipated based on the plaza location. The atmosphere was quiet, stylish, and reminiscent of an upscale Asian fusion restaurant. The service was attentive throughout the meal. Our server was friendly and eager to help, although a few service practices caught me off guard. For example, staff insisted on opening the lids of all our dim sum dishes upon serving, even though we already opened them (they literally closed them and opened them again lol). The food was on the expensive side--match with then ambience, comparable to what I would expect at a medium-nice Japanese restaurant (like Iza, or Akami)--which naturally raised my expectations. The sushi rolls were enjoyable enough, but I found the portions smaller than expected for the price point. The beef tartare was a generous (huge) portion with a nice texture and beautiful presentation, though I personally would have preferred more seasoning. In fact the tasting was so lacking I could not finish it, so the large portion did not really mean much. We also ordered the buns, and kung pao chicken, which was flavorful and well prepared, but it leaned more toward a Westernized interpretation of the dish and came in a relatively modest portion (which is fair, given their description of "modern asian cuisines"). I found myself a bit unsure of the restaurant's identity. The ambiance, presentation, and pricing suggested a fine-dining experience, while the food itself felt more mixed in terms of value and execution. For me personally, when I'm looking primarily for standout food at this price point, I would certainly choose other restaurants in the area (such as Shijjiri for stronger sushi quality despite the more casual atmosphere, or spend a little more for M Sushi where I know my sushi would be consistently excellent). That said, the atmosphere is lovely, and the attentive service makes it a nice option for a date night where food might not be the main focus. read more

Delicious new restaurant in the old Neo China space. It has a cool Japanese vibe, though the lighting is pretty bright and apparently not on dimmers. It didn't matter though because the food and service were fantastic. We started with shishito peppers and the trio of oysters, which are small but delicious Japanese oysters. Both were excellent. We also had the thinly sliced yellowtail with jalapeño--fresh and delicious! We treated the meal a bit like tapas, and this worked just fine because everything came out so quickly. As soon as we finished one dish, another one was put in front of us. We had the mango avocado salad, which was very fresh and a great intermezzo. We moved on to the sushi, sashimi, and my absolute favorite--the spicy tuna crispy rice. I could come back and eat this every single day...it was that good! Cocktails were also delicious, I recommend the whiskey sour. My only regret is not taking more photos because it was all nicely presented and appetizing. We'll be back soon! read more

"Wonderful Japanese/ Asian bistro with Sushi behind South Square in Durham" We happened upon this gem within their first week of business-- they were still settling in (didn't even have a kettle yet for tea!). However, we were blown away by how good it was. Arrived on a Saturday night at 6pm and were seated quickly, but the place was bustling. Setting felt quiet and comfortable. My dining partner and I had the cucumber sumomono, a crispy tofu gua bao, and the sushi dinner set. Service was friendly-- many people checked on us beyond our waiter. The cucumber sumomono was fresh and tasty-- the cucumbers were very thinly sliced and the dish had a nice vinegar flavor. The crispy tofu gua bao was yummy-- the garlic aioli on it was very tasty, and the tofu and bun were good, and the presentation of both dishes was excellent. The star of the dinner was the sushi dinner set. This came with one each of 8 pieces of sushi, including tuna, salmon, eel, shrimp, egg (tamago), etc., and a yellowtail scallion roll. Every piece was STELLAR-- we both thought this may be the best sushi we've ever had. The eel was a favorite for me, but literally every piece was scrumptuous and perfectly prepared. Again, excellent presentation too. I will say that this was "just enough" food... if we came very hungry, and was still splitting with one other person, this would not have been enough. The price was decent-- this is a higher-end sushi place, so it's no Rockin' Rolls sushi in price, but man, you get what you pay for in quality. We were fortunate that they were offering 1/3 off for the first week, too. Overall, easily 5 stars based especially on quality, and I'd very happily come back. read more

What a refreshing treat to be wildly impressed choosing this restaurant on a whim. From walking in to walking out we were treated beautifully. The service is absolutely 5 stars as well as the food. You can tell the intentional detail to every design, dish and interaction. We loved the crispy rice rolls, soft shell crab and dumplings so much. Our Nigiri and sushi rolls were also outstanding. We recently decided to celebrate Father's Day at Tang after hearing good things about it, and we were eager to try it out. Our early 5:45 reservation gave us a good selection of tables to choose from. The decor was inviting, and our waiter was attentive, which set a positive tone for the evening. We started with dumplings and tataki appetizers that arrived quickly and were quite delicious. For our main courses, we ordered Mongolian Beef, a tuna scallion roll, a California roll, and seven pieces of nigiri. However, after about 20 minutes, our waiter informed us that the sushi was delayed due to understaffing and asked if we wanted the Mongolian Beef right away. We agreed, and our daughter got half her dinner at 6:30. The nigiri showed up around 6:45, and to our surprise, the sushi rolls finally arrived at 7:00. While the nigiri was tasty, the fish pieces were thinner than expected. The mackerel consisted of two small pieces on the rice. The tuna scallion roll was missing the scallion altogether, tasting more like supermarket sushi from Harris Teeter. The California roll was decent but lacked even proportions and little cucumber. Given that the situation seemed to stem from staff shortages, we plan to return on a less hectic day to give Tang another chance. In the meantime, if you decide to visit, it's wise to check whether the sushi chef understaffing has been resolved to ensure a better experience. read more

My friends and I recently visited Tang Restaurant in Durham, NC. We really enjoyed the atmosphere, and the host and waitstaff were very friendly, personable, and attentive. The food that was ordered was flavorful, beautifully presented, and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, the reason we will not return is because of the restaurant's unwillingness to accommodate simple requests. I ordered the lemon butter scallops, which is listed as a bistro plate and does not come with sides. I asked to add a side of rice or vegetables to make it a complete meal and was told the chef would not allow it. However, we were also told that if someone ordered an entrée like the Mongolian beef, which already comes with rice, they could purchase an additional side of rice. That inconsistency felt unreasonable so I ordered the pan fried dumpling. Another person in our party ordered the Mongolian beef and wanted to add shrimp for an upcharge, but she was told she could not add shrimp, even though chicken could be added. We were willing to pay for the additions, so the lack of flexibility felt unnecessary and unaccommodating. Overall, while the food, service, prices, and ambiance were all enjoyable, the strict and inconsistent rules around meal additions made the experience disappointing. Because of that, Tang will not be on our list of preferred places to dine in Durham. read more

Took my lovely wife out to a pre-anniversary date night at Tang. Had no idea this place existed but it caught our eye when we were coming out of John David jewelers (we were on the hunt for a spiffy anniversary piece for the wife). We were so glad we stopped in! We loved our waiter he was a blast and very informative and attentive. Fans of the orange beverage will be disappointed but they had many tasty drink to pick from - went with a Sapporo. Everything here was top notch -- food, service, ambiance. Hubby and I shared their crispy chicken gua bao and a salmon avocado sushi roll. Then I had the Thai green curry with shrimp and my husband the shrimp pad Thai. Everything was served beautifully, at the right temperatures! Bao has nice flavors and textures, fish and avocado in sushi roll so very fresh with great rice, and the pad Thai and curry were again delicious! Loved all the shrimp and veggies in my curry served in a beautiful stoneware pot. We will definitely be back! Servers were knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. A true gem! read more

Started with oyster shooters (delicious!), bang bang shrimp (very large meaty shrimp, generous portion), sticky rice with spicy tuna (3 pieces, yummy!). I had the pad Thai with shrimp and husband had sushi rolls (soft shell and shrimp tempura). Daughter had 2 chicken gua baos (so yummy! ...like a tangy chicken sandwich).
