We visited this evening around 8:00 PM and were the only customers. While the restaurant was clean with pleasant background music, the overall experience was poor, especially given the prices. The Food We ordered the Shrimp Katsu ($16) with rice and the Beef Teriyaki ($18), since they were out of the Salmon Teriyaki. A major red flag was hearing a series of loud microwave beeps immediately after placing our order. The food came out after 10-15 minutes. The Positive: Both of our meals came with excellent rice that was fluffy and fragrant, and a small side salad with a standard ginger dressing. The Disappointment: My Shrimp Katsu was highly disappointing. It tasted nothing like shrimp and resembled processed meat, similar to imitation crab, but shaped like mozzarella sticks drizzled with sweet mayo. The texture and flavor were clearly not fresh shrimp. My wife's Beef Teriyaki was also underwhelming. The beef was chewy and served over soggy lettuce, with a very basic, overly sweet teriyaki glaze. The Service The lone waitress was polite but demonstrated poor customer service skills. The most jarring part of the meal was when she began to hover near our table while we were eating, making us feel rushed. At 8:20 PM, she told us they were closing at 8:30 PM, pressuring us to finish quickly. Their Google listing clearly states a 9:00 PM closing time. As someone who tries to support local Asian cuisine, I was genuinely disappointed by both the low quality of the food and the pushy, rushed service. We will not be returning. My grading scale depends on size of cuts and flavors of fish, and definitely quality over quantity. And I have to be honest when I say for a restaurant being in a very non de script and odd location, that makes one question the quality of the fish. Well I'm here to say please don't let their locale deter you from trying their sushi! I came on a wed and the fish was amazing. I had the shogun combo and was throughly surprised. I sat at the bar and the chef provided me with some of my favorite fish even though he didn't need to. He even told me their best fish of the day. The cut sizes were not too big but not tiny. The rice was a tiny bit thicker than I would like but definitely not bad and not over filling. There was a totally fresh taste in each bite. I like Sushi Nikko. A few things I think you have to know going in - the rolls are incredibly Westernized so there is a lot of tempura and sauce involved, there is no BOGO but the rolls are huge and filling, the atmosphere is really plain and super casual but it's really quiet inside and you don't have to worry about big crowds. I've been a handful of times and, although I can definitely admit that it isn't the best quality sushi in the area, I typically leave satisfied and happy about my visit. Tonight my husband and I split the Nikko Roll, the Crunch Dragon Roll, and the New Orleans Roll. At most sushi places, three rolls between the two of us wouldn't feel like quite enough food, but these rolls were enormous and we left stuffed. The only downside to such large rolls is that the size makes them difficult to eat with chopsticks and inevitably I end up looking ridiculous having to break the roll into smaller bites. The rolls were tasty tonight, but I was a little disappointed with the tempura-fried elements, as they all tasted like they had been fried a bit earlier in the evening, so none of them were remotely warm or particularly crunchy. Is Sushi Nikko my favorite sushi place? No, but it hits the spot when I just want some decent sushi for a reasonable price. Sushi Nikko was a pleasant surprise. Strip mall sushi isn't exactly an inspiring concept, but the food was excellent, service friendly, and decor...well, they try. It had your classic ginger dressing and iceberg lettuce, but also avocado, pickled radishes, and sesame seeds. Of course, the sushi is where Nikko shines. We ordered three rolls for the two of us, and they came out big, beautiful, and tasty. We were both hungry and couldn't finish it all. The fish was fresh, the cuts were clean, they were rolled beautifully, and, most importantly, they were flavorful and delicious. The sushi itself was the best I've had in the triangle. The service was very friendly too. It was a quiet night, but our server was friendly, patient, and helpful. The rolls were way too large, each one would fall apart before you could even make it to your mouth. I had the Nikko, double double (both okay) and the rainbow, which was just overall disappointing. Not a lot of atmosphere - a very typical strip-center store front. The rolls were all quite large. Others have mentioned the lack of BOGO, but I prefer decent-sized rolls over gimmicky pricing - so that's a plus in my book. The menu had a wide variety of maki rolls and other items, and the pictures were helpful. The downside was that the rolls we ordered did not seem to have all the items mentioned in the description. I think we just ordered poorly (selecting 'interesting' maki), while my wife thought the pictures or descriptions were not quite right. I have no complaints - this was a perfect place to grab lunch after a morning at the DMV license and title offices. They had a great lunch special for 3 rolls for $25 (and I think 5 for $40). Good food! It is a little pricy, but the bento box is a great special. You can choose between two items or three items from a list. I opted for the three item because I assumed the portions were small. My three items were: chicken teriyaki, crunch roll, and california roll. You can also get a complimentary miso soup to start you off. When the bento box came out, I was like, wow! That's actually a lot of food. It also came with a side of salad with mustard-tasting dressing. The chicken teriyaki was delicious with the white rice. The chicken was doused in the teriyaki sauce and I loved it. This is a regretful post because sushi is a favorite dish. Ambiance. Clean. Delicate. Attention to detail has been paid however the music doesn't match the room. The food. The sushi are too large and certainly, unflavorful. Its McDonald's for masses. Truly, if you cannot fit the sushi in your mouth--and they're falling apart before you can get them on the chop sticks--there's a problem Will Roger. I must say, I had low expectations for this new sushi restaurant in the Carrboro plaza and am glad to say I was wrong! The unassuming exterior is balanced by the simple but modern interior, with theses comfy looking leather seats for the bar. I believe complimentary miso soup is offered here with your meal. My boyfriend and I split the imperial sashimi ($50) which is basically an assortment of 7 different fish, plus cooked eel, about 4 pieces of each fish. There were also several pieces of imitation crab thrown in which we didn't care for. The presentation was pretty nice and came out on the classic wooden sushi boat! The sashimi was surprisingly fresh and cut just right (not too thin or thick). We really enjoyed it! Would definitely eat the sashimi here again. Now for the cons: This dish did not come with any sushi rice which was a big WTF for me. How can you not offer rice with your sashimi dish?! Every other restaurant I've ever been to has included rice. Secondly, management needs to train their servers better. Our waitress was not well trained regarding the menu...she didn't even know what the imperial sashimi was! She asked someone about it and when she got back to us she gave us the wrong answer (she said it came with rice and a salad which it doesn't)! We asked for a salad anyway and she never even brought it out! The service here was definitely sub-par but the food is good enough for me to overlook this aspect. I have been so excited for this place to open as it is super close to my apartment and I love sushi! So what could be better than a sushi restaurant a few minutes away? Turns out the answer is a restaurant with fresher ingredients and management. If you want the short version, scroll down! Longer version: From the looks of the restaurant, it appears that the restaurant is up and running and fully functional; however, this was not my experience. My roommate and I went to check them out on Tuesday and as soon as we walked in, we were completely confused. No one was at the front to greet us and all we saw were a few patrons sitting down, a sushi chef behind the sushi bar and two servers. We continued to stand around and wait for someone to let us know what to do but no one did and after a few minutes we sat ourselves. Just an FYI, there's no sign to seat yourself so that's why we were so confused. We sat at a table (in view from the back/kitchen area) on purpose so the servers wouldn't forget that we were waiting and finally someone came about five minutes later. Now, after waiting for awhile, we'd expect to be greeted nicely and with menus but this wasn't the case. The server just came up and asked if we were ready. Hmmm.. well considering we don't have menus and only had (what looked like to us) take-out menus to bring back home with us, no we aren't ready. Honestly, I was surprised by the poor customer service. We asked for menus and he came back with one. We asked for water and a few minutes to look over the one menu we both had to look at and he promptly came back with water and just lingered at our table which was uncomfortable for me. We finally ordered under the pressure and was glad to just be done with that awkwardness. Once our food came out, I thought everything would be better but sadly, it wasn't. The miso soup we started off with tasted like it came from a bag in powder form... definitely not good. Then our sushi came out and our server said that one of each of our rolls were on the same plate while the other two rolls were being made (we each ordered two rolls). Well... it turns out that the server was wrong and my two rolls were on the first plate and my roommate's sushi rolls were on the other separate plates. Little things like this bother me and show me that the servers obviously aren't trained enough to tell which rolls are which. Maybe I'm being too harsh but I've worked in sushi restaurants before so I understand its a bit confusing but this is more of a critique to management who clearly hasn't trained their staff. The food was meh. I ordered the crunch dragon roll and eel special roll and I would describe the taste and quality between spicy 9 (which is decent sushi) and grocery store sushi. Firstly, the spicy tuna in each of the rolls I ordered was not spicy. Also, the fish in the rolls didn't look or taste particularly fresh either. Lastly, the taste of each roll was pretty bland considering they should have big flavors with the spicy tuna, eel, crab and other items in each roll. I just felt that it was a rip off to pay as much as I did for their sushi as they don't do a BOGO special. Sadly, the highlight of the sushi was the crunchies on top of the crunch dragon roll... which is not a good thing considering its just fried pieces. After we finished our sushi, our original server was no where to be found and the other server told us she'd take care of us as he had to clock out. I found this really weird considering servers don't just clock out mid-shift but went with it as I found the other server to give better customer service. She was more knowledgable about the menu items and advised us to try the mochi green tea ice cream which was really good! She definitely helped Sushi Nikko go from one star to two as she was attentive, polite and patient with us and our needs. The mochi green tea ice cream helped as well. ***Short version: I did learn that they just opened on Monday so I understand the rocky service but being ignored when we walk in and talked to in an impatient manner is ridiculous. I'll most likely try them out again (definitely not anytime soon) as they're so close by and the sushi isn't horrible but I'll most likely order take-out instead of dining in. So, if you are a big fan of sushi I'd be hesitant to try this place as their sushi rolls are pretty bland in flavor and the ingredients aren't as fresh as other restaurants. I'm hoping that their customer service and quality of food will get better as they work out the kinks. *Disclaimer: I was pretty excited about this restaurant and was hoping it would be my new sushi spot, so needless to say, I had high expectations which is a bit unfair to Sushi Nikko but some things aren't excusable. read more

My friends have been telling me to go check out Sushi Nikko for a month or two now, and I finally made it out for dinner this evening. I was greeted immediately after walking in the door and then seated promptly at a comfortable booth. I was brought my drink order right away and the waitress, Sydney, had wonderful menu suggestions, and was very knowledgeable about all of the menu items and ingredients. I ordered a $12 roll at her suggestion, as well as an order of Edamame. The appetizer was brought out just as I was finishing my complimentary Miso soup (REAL Miso soup, not chicken broth with tofu) The roll came out almost the second I finished my appetizer and holy goodness gracious, it was LARGE! I know several people have said that they are disappointed that Sushi Nikko does not do the popular BOGO discount like many sushi places do, but if my dinner tonight was any indication, there is no need to worry that I will always get more than my money's worth here. The roll was at least 50% larger than any other roll I have ordered at Shiki Sushi, or Akai Hana, and the fish to rice ratio was significantly larger than I am used to, and the fish was delicious. it tasted very fresh, and had a lovely texture; not tough, or "fishy" tasting at all. When I remarked to the server how delicious it was, she assured me that the get fresh sushi fish in every other day and never keep any fish for more than 48 hours. I finished my roll, and my server asked if I was interested in dessert. Now, usually I am not a big fan of desserts at sushi restaurants because they try to go for popular American desserts, like vanilla ice cream, chocolate cake, or creme brulee, and I just usually don't have an appetite for mediocre dessert, but when I asked her to tell me about their dessert options she listed several very appetizing options such as Tempura Ice Cream or Mochi ice cream. I ended up ordering the green tea mochi ice cream, and I was not dissappointed. The ice cream was a perfect consistency, and there was just the perfect amount for one person. I had never seen mochi ice cream listed as a dessert option, even at other sushi restaurants, and was pleased to find a refreshing, exciting dessert that I had never tried before. Finally to top off a perfect sushi dinner, my waitress brought the bill, and had made a tiny paper crane as a lovely little surprise! It was just the sort of personal customer service I love to see! If you love excellent customer service and amazingly fresh sushi, I would highly recommend going to try Sushi Nikko. I will definitely be dropping some BIG hints about where my husband should take us for our next date night! read more
