When you arrive parking can be a bit tricky in this area as you'll need to find parking on the street or in a nearby parking lot. When you arrive the entrance can be a bit hard to find as it's tucked away down a cobblestone road. Look for the "m" logo outside of the door of the restaurant. You'll check in with the host when you arrive, and for this trip we opted to sit at the bar. When you walk into M sushi you'll feel like you've stepped into an underground, relaxed hangout for sushi. To start I ordered the Mizuwari (Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky, elderfower liqueur, and tonic) which was perfectly balanced and a great way to start the meal. Following that the omakase service started with miso soup which was hot and fresh, followed by the different pieces of sushi. There was a variety from blue fin tuna, to sea bream, to Norwegian Sea trout. My favorite was a tie between the seared salmon belly and toro blue fin. We also ordered a bottle of Born Gold Junmai Daliginjo (Rich, smooth, fruit and grain forward) which paired excellently with the meal. This was a fun experience as it was my first time trying Omakase and looking forward to my next trip to M Sushi.

We started off with their sodas made in-house, one being green apple and the other being grapefruit. They were okay. The grapefruit one kind of tasted like apple cider vinegar. We tried them because a soda was $6 and there were no free refills. I find that a strange decision but this could be personal preference. We got a mixture of the small plates and rolls including the nigiri (delightful!), tuna crispy rice (my 2nd favorite), dumplings, bao bun (one cut in half), the rainbow roll, and the unagi roll. While I thought the nigiri and tuna crispy rice were amazing - both tasted fresh - overall, the food was just fine. I think our experience could just be based on pure preference. I found the sushi to be good but not the best I have ever had as some other Yelpers have experienced.

I must admit, the outside and parking lot leaves a lot to be desired but the inside is a secret garden! So, I am so glad a friend asked us to meet here for lunch yesterday. No greeter and the main entrance and different parts that don't appear to be part of Namu but all are ‍. So, if it's your first time know this. All food is ordered by a QR code which is fine but again if it's your first time, there's no one even walking around that you can ask questions to. But, let's talk about the main star-the food. I like Korean food, have had the widely known bulgogi, kimchi etc. My eyes were startled to see gimbap on the menu. After watching Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix and becoming obsessed with it, IYKYK; I had to try the gimbap. I loved, loved the shrimp tempura gimbap. It was generous portions so I got to bring some home. And, the six different homemade sauces were delicious too...I tried them all. Definitely I will be back and I loved the ambiance!

They have a system to flag a staff member if you need additional service. I ordered one of there popular dishes as I love poke bowls. Bibimbap with chicken. Our service was great... especially with how busy they were. I had crab ragoons, crab salad, the special roll called the Lady Bug and fried cheesecake. Really liked the ragoons qith a good amount of cream cheese in a pastry. The Lady Bug roll was delish. The crab salad was different, but good. I believe I expected chunks of crab and it was shredded. Never had fried cheesecake, but cheesecake is my favorite dessert so I wanted to try it. Nice fried crust on the outside and creamy on the inside. It was a good experience.

If you're looking for a smaller cozy venue and enjoy sampling dishes that are done with intention,…read morethen M Tempura is that place. We pre-booked the Omakase menu, a fixed price tasting menu that was honestly a deal regarding price point. We would have been satisfied with the first seven dishes even before we got to the tempura tasting. Standouts included scallop toast, chawanmushi, and scallop tartare. At this point we were more than content with what we already sampled but committed to finish. The tempura featured prawns, lotus root, lobster and more scallop. And if that's not enough, we were presented with a miso marinated sea bass in a rice bowl garnished with nori, wasabi and pickled daikon. We finished with a divine ginger ice cream, perfect in size , flavor and consistency. M Tempura is your choice if you're seeking an intimate spot featuring well crafted, delicate flavors with attention to detail. This experience was a memorable one.

Had a date night here (sat at the bar- which you can reserve online), and did the "Kaiseki"…read more(Japanese tasting) menu. It's about 10 courses for $130- and I felt it was well worth the price. The quality of the fish was great, the flavor combinations were unique, and each course was different from each other (I appreciated only one course- with 4 items- was tempura/fried). You can add on additional tempura items at one point in the meal, and you can add on a wine and sake tasting. My favorite courses of the meal were the FIRST "seabass sammie" and the brie tempura (get the add on if it's not included in your menu!!!!) Some of the courses were interactive (I.e. cooking lobster in butter) and made for a cool, fun, and unique experiences. The restaurant is small and cozy (limited seating, so make a reservation far in advance), and both the waiters and the chefs were extremely friendly and engaging (sit at the bar counter). Really enjoyed all of the food, and an opportunity to wear something nice, and to eat something different (than what you're used to in Durham). I appreciated they had 2 other tasting menus, for cheaper prices (one was only $38), and that every tasting menu was VERY different from each other (makes it easy to come back multiple times). Would highly recommend M Tempura, and will definitely be back!

I stopped in at 4:45 on a random Wednesday and was the only customer for a few minutes. It's in an office/medical building near DUMC and the VA hospitals, so students and residents seem to be who they cater to. It's not overly decorated, but it is a little nicer than the offices in other parts of the building. The high stools at the bar were very comfortable, but I didn't have to think about that for long, because my order came out so quickly. I ordered two rolls from the BOGO menu, and they were out in just a few minutes. The chef prepared it very quickly, right in front of me. She passed it across the bar with a big smile. One roll was the Rainbow roll, traditionally a California roll with tuna, salmon, avocado, and white fish wrapped around it on the outside. The second was a house special, the Blue Devil Roll. It is shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with seared filet mignon, eel sauce and scallions. The seared beef was a surprising flavor, along with the eel sauce. Both were gone rather quickly. But I'm sure I'll be back!

They have a decent selection of appetizers, nigiri, specialty rolls, and other items, so it's fun being able to try a little bit of everything instead of committing to just a few rolls. The sushi is good for an all you can eat restaurant. I've definitely had better quality sushi elsewhere, but considering how much food you get, I really can't complain. One thing I'd recommend is ordering everything you think you'll want in your first round. There's a 90-minute time limit, and once your initial order comes out, the server doesn't check back very often. They do charge $1 for every leftover piece, but if you're with a group, it's usually not hard to finish everything. If you're just looking to satisfy a sushi craving without breaking the bank, Mr. Tokyo is definitely worth checking out!

My first two rolls took a while to come out, but I think that was because one of the rolls I ordered was fried. My last two rolls came out much quicker and I ordered those one at a time. AYCE dinner was $26.99, and I felt like I got my moneys worth with 26 pieces of sushi (10 of those pieces were HUGE pieces of sushi too). Appa Roll (5): This roll was pretty, green, and tasty! I loved the shrimp tempura and avocado combination. Even though this was a 5 piece roll, the pieces were big, so it was just as filling as the standard 8 piece. TNT Roll (5): I enjoyed it, but probably wouldn't get this one again because it is fried and has cream cheese (too filling when you are trying to do AYCE). I really liked the mango in the roll, so I want to try their other rolls with mango! The pieces were huge, this roll was more filling than the standard 8 piece. Chapel Hill Roll (8): My favorite roll of the night, I loved the different fish on top and the avocado was delicious. Salmon Lover Roll (8): If you like salmon and avocado, this roll is for you! A lot of other salmon forward rolls have cream cheese, so I loved that this one had avocado instead. Delicious! I look forward to coming back with a friend or my husband so we can share rolls and try even more varieties!
