I know, I know... why grab sushi in North Carolina? Well, I craving it and was not disappointed. It's not a hole in the wall nor is it some upscale Japanese restaurant. I'd probably call it the "neighborhood's sushi spot" because it's casual, good, and the staff is just super nice! I had a chicken bento box and a half-side of their rainbow roll. Their chicken was nicely grilled and all the sides were just nicely portioned if not over-portioned (in a good way). Their rolls alone are already a 10/10 because they didn't over-do it with the rice. It was a really good balance and the fish tasted fresh for being in NC! Last year my dad, stepmom, and I were offered a meal on the house here cause the manager was a friend of my stepuncle who passed away due to diabetic complications. Disappointing hole-in-the-wall with nothing to offer. To say that I am shocked about the quality of this restaurant is an understatement. Considering the reviews, you'd think it would be a great experience. It was not. The atmosphere was terrible. There were ugly table covers and styrofoam cups. Felt like I was eating at a family reunion. The service was terrible as well. We were not acknowledged after sitting down; it was completely dead. Our waitress then proceeded to have an attitude with us, and talk down to us like we had no idea what we were talking about when we asked questions. The dishes at this restaurant are not accurate at all. For example, the so-called katsudon is actually a curry rather than the traditional dish itself. The sushi prices were absolutely exorbitant for shitty quality. How can a california roll be priced at $11? The nigiri I ordered, however, was surprisingly cheap which made no sense considering the price point of the other sushi. It was horrible though, tasting stringy and with an odd aftertaste. Another party member ordered ramen and absolutely hated it. The noodles tasted like they had been boiled in contaminated tap water. Some rolls are on the bland side, but because of their discount I've enjoyed trying new ones each time to find my favorites. Some of my favorite rolls are the furious dragon, blue devil, Carolina and volcano rolls. Spicy Mayo does have an extra charge so if you're picking up, make sure it's actually in the bag! I usually call and while preparation time can vary, it's usually quite reasonable, making Akashi a convenient pick up spot. I have never dined in before, but they have a nice ambience. While I've only tried this place once, I'm already a fan. The fish used for sushi and sashimi were good quality. They also give you copious amounts of rice. I thought I was hungry enough for the Sushi and Sashimi dinner, but by the time I got to the tuna roll I was slowing down. My husband had the dinner portion of the chirashi don and even he had a little bit of rice leftover. My only bone to pick with them is the quality of their takeout containers. They use very flimsy styrofoam that is not fitted to the food. My container fell over during transit, and when I opened it, my sushi and sashimi were all over the place. Choosing those containers specifically for sushi might've been a better outcome. But that's just me being nit picky. I'm hoping to try their other dishes like tonkatsu and tempura udon. read more

We really enjoyed our takeout dinner for Akashi. We placed the order through the Yelp Grubhub feature and our food was ready about 45 mins after the order was submitted. The pickup process took more time than expected because I had to go inside to pick up my order and the restaurant only allows one customer inside at a time for COVID safety reasons. Though it took some time, I appreciated being able to maintain distance from other customers. The staff members were all wearing masks. The food was very enjoyable. It was some of the better sushi we have had in the area. Below is a breakdown of our order: - sushi regular platter ($15.95) - This was a lot of fun to eat. It came with 7 pieces of nigiri, each with a different type of fish (one with shrimp). My partner and I enjoyed trying each one and comparing the different flavors. It also came with 8 pieces of maki (rolled sushi) and ginger/wasabi. - chicken yakisoba ($15.95) - We LOVED this dish. The serving size was very large; it's definitely big enough to share between two people. The noodles were really tasty, and the vegetables were very flavorful. The dish came with a lot of chicken; the only issue was that some of the chicken was slightly overcooked and dry. - shumai ($5.25) - This appetizer came with 6 small steamed shrimp shumai. They were good but maybe a little pricey for the size. We likely wouldn't order again. - miso soup (side) - A classic, delicious. - soup (side) - Came with a nice ginger dressing. We usually go to Kurama on New Year's Eve for dinner, but this year decided it would be best to forego dining in. I looked over the menu at Akashi and it looked like we could get a similar dinner to go and it's just five minutes from home! No brainer! Overall it was okay. The highlight was an order of vegetable tempura, which I've not had in years! It was really good, but rather than three pieces of sweet potato I wish they'd have balanced it out with another broccoli with the other veggies. We got the dinner teppanyaki, one with shrimp and scallops, and the other with shrimp and steak. I asked for the steak medium rare and it was way overcooked and tough. The scallops were overcooked too. The serving is very large. Their white sauce is very good. The ginger dressing for the salad is very good. I did not like the fishy flavor of the miso sauce and it was Very salty. I'd probably get the vegetable tempura again and try something else on the menu. read more

For $15 I get a large portion of Hibachi chicken, vegetables, miso soup, salad, & fried rice. Their to go system is easy too. You can either call or order off of Grubhub. Sometimes Grubhub says they're closed though when they actually aren't, so just ignore it. That is Grubhub being stupid. They allow one person at a time to come in and pick up their order. I haven't been able to find great quality sushi since moving to Durham from Jersey 6 years ago (correction great quality affordable sushi - no one can afford to regularly get M Sushi...) and of all the Durham sushi restaurants, Akashi is easily the best. I can't speak for the service or in restaurant dining but the food is incredible. Our order every time is: steamed shrimp shumai, spicy salmon avocado, spicy tuna avocado, sweet Romeo, cherry blossom, tropical sunrise rolls. You will not be disappointed. The ginger dressing on the house salad is my favorite ginger dressing in the Triangle (and I've tried quiet a few at local Japanese restaurants). I don't like the spicy rolls here as much as I do at other sushi spots; Akashi rolls are spicier than I'm used to, but you may appreciate that if you like spicy food (I like a little heat, but I found myself chugging water on our last visit because of the spicy tuna). The quality of the fish isn't as good as you'll find at a lot of non-BOGO spots, but it's certainly not bad. Akashi has updated the interior recently with calming lavender paint and floral paintings. The atmosphere is still casual so no need to dress up. Our most recent visit was on a Friday night around 7:30pm and the place was busy but there were still plenty of open seats. Service was excellent and the sushi was brought out fairly quickly. All in all, this is a good go-to spot for BOGO sushi in Durham! read more
