Stopped by Sushi Mon for lunch earlier. When you arrive parking can be a little tricky as you're surrounded by office buildings. We ended up parking by the regions bank building and walking across the street. To locate the front entrance of Sushi Mon you'll proceed into the office building and the entrance will be off to your right. Walking in the restaurant feels modern, upscale, sleek, intimate, and trendy. Since we arrived for lunch during the week they were running a few lunch specials. I ordered the sushi combo (6 pieces of nigiri and a Sushi Mon hand roll) with a miso soup. The miso soup was a pleasant surprise and was delicious quite filling as it contained cabbage, salmon, and mushrooms. The 6 pieces Nigiri was also well balanced and had a good selection of sushi (amberjack, salmon belly, cooked shrimp, etc.). The Sushi Mon hand roll was good but had a bit of heat to it. My daughter and I had planned to go to the new Ramen place Monya, next door to Sushi Mon, but they had sold out for the day when we arrived. We were seated in the lobby area seating area for the restaurant right away. Danielle was our awesome server. We started with water, wine & garlic edamame. We both ordered sushi rolls (Salmon Crunch, Philadelphia & Ring of Fire) & my daughter ordered a hand roll as well. While I was stuffed after everything, my daughter wasn't. Phenomenal experience! Sat at the sushi bar and had such a lovely experience. Everything we ordered had such a unique taste to it and didn't resemble anything else on the menu. Everything was a true treat! Fresh sushi and other dishes all bursting with flavor and enticing flavor profiles. Located in a building so it was a little confusing to find throughout a parking garage and office building, but worth it! Service was welcoming and professional and added to the wonderful experience. Visited Sushi Mon on a recommendation from a local. Initially I wasn't sure about it because seating was in what seemed to be the lobby of the building it's located in. Later I saw the actual restaurant is a bit small with a few tables and sushi bar so I'm thinking they have out grown their space and after eating the food I can understand how that happened. As mentioned it has a small footprint but we didn't wait long. Our server was very kind and provided excellent service. We started with the gyoza which were out of this world! They had the perfect char on the dumpling without making it too seared. The Sashimi plate was incredible, each piece of fish melted in your mouth. If I have to give one critique I'd say our yellow tail was still a little frozen but that didn't stop me from devouring it. Crispy Salmon Roll was light and refreshing and their Rainbow Roll was like no other I've had. My husband and I have two reference points when it comes to sushi; mine is Japan where I was introduced to it as a young Marine, his is Hawaii where had the most amazing sushi about 5 years ago. We went to Sushi Mon for Valentine's Day dinner, and overall it was a good experience with one clear standout. The sushi itself was solid across the board, but the truffle tuna roll was hands down the best thing we ordered. It was rich and absolutely worth going back for on its own. If we return, that roll will be a must-order. The rest of the rolls were just okay, especially when you factor in the price point. With no BOGO or happy hour-style deals, the value didn't quite line up with how memorable some of the other rolls were. Nothing was bad, they just didn't stand out enough to fully justify the cost. One miss for me was the miso soup. It's a special house recipe that includes cabbage and fish, and unfortunately it tasted overly fishy and wasn't to my liking at all. I appreciate the creativity, but this one just wasn't for me. Overall, Sushi Mon is a solid option with at least one standout roll that would bring us back. Consistently one of my most favorite sushi, restaurants. I think it's because of the incredibly creative way that Suman defines sushi. Their dishes are way beyond the average roll and sashimi. In fact, there appetizers and entrées will the light you with their flavors and presentation. Everything was delicious and fresh. We were really blown away by the flavor and the freshness. The sushi was up there with some of the best we've had if not the best, the shrimp tempura was absolutely the best I've ever had, and the yellowtail crudo (once again, among the freshest tasting I've had) was everything I wanted and more. That being said, the service was almost non existent. The waiter we had originally was super nice but he left halfway through and despite being in eyesight of four different service and the people sitting next to us getting the service of their life, we were basically left there without service for more than an hour. That was super disappointing. Also, we did agree to sitting in the lobby but the fact that I had to look at an abandoned office the whole time. This was just not a great experience. Wow. Just wow. I was so impressed by everything we ate tonight. I had been wanting to eat here for probably a year maybe longer and the day finally came. What a delight. I would say that this is easily the best Japanese food that I've had in the triangle. I've been to M sushi but Sushi Mon is where it's really at. We came here around 6pm without a reservation and sat in the lobby area indoors in front of the restaurant which is at the bottom of an office building. It is very much a hidden gem that had a huge queue by the time it was 7/7:30 so get here earlier if you can. We didn't actually try the gyoza because it was for my daughter but it looked and smelled amazing and apparently they put a little chili oil into the soy sauce which is *muah* chefs kiss. We also ordered the Kama which the waiter Kenny (I believe) warned would take a while to prepare but it actually came out super quick! It was fantastic. The skin was crispy and the meat was juicy and tender. It comes with match salt, two lemon slices to squeeze over the whole thing, and another delicious dipping sauce. I believe it came with 4 large pieces of fish head/maw (my husband rearranged it on the plate and I forgot how it looked beforehand haha). The rainbow roll was simply amazing and so beautiful as well. Definitely our favorite of the two rolls we ordered. We also ordered the crunch salmon roll which was nice, a bit on the sweeter side, but with a fun crunchy kataify dough topping. Our server also recommended the tuna truffle roll so we'll have to try that next time. The eel bun was nice but a little pricey for what is essentially two bites of food. It has a nice texture with the crunch of the Japanese pickle and the salmon skin atop the eel. Also, the water was really good?!?! Clearly filtered reverse osmosis or something. Unfortunately they ran out of the ricotta pistachio cake dessert!! Next time. There was a mixed crowd and a ton of Asians dining here which is a total green flag/testament to how tasty this restaurant is. Sushi Mon on Glenwood is one of my go-to spots--everything I've had there is delicious, and the fish is always fresh. The yellowtail crudo and toro are standouts and definitely worth ordering. The bar is a great place to sit if you like a more up-close, interactive experience, and the small space gives it a really cool, laid-back vibe. I am so disappointed I did not make it to sushi mon earlier. I recently went in for lunch and was so impressed. It definitely got busy for lunch, I arrived at 11:50 so that I could grab a table. The lunch specials are great! I wanted to try a few other things as well so I added on some apps. The gyoza was great and I really loved their rocksalt salmon. For lunch I could the bento box. Their miso soup is awesome and definitely elevated, it had great chunks of fish and cabbage in it. The bento box was tasty, but the chicken teriyaki was cold, but flavorful. The truffle tuna roll my favorite, loved the addition of the lemon zest. The salmon with it was great as well, I was just wayy too full. Parking is easy here either in the deck or in one the parking lots. When you pull into the main entrance of the plaza Sushi Mon is located as one of the first businesses on the left hand side. read more

I give Sushi Mon 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. No doubt, this was some of the best sushi we've had in the Triangle. However, we didn't walk away wowed with the overall experience like we have with other Japanese restaurants such as M Sushi in Durham. Where Sushi Mon has M beat, though, is in value. You can have an excellent sushi meal here without breaking the bank. This place is worth visiting and I recommend it if you like good sushi. Sushi Mon originally opened in December 2018 on Hillsborough Street near NC State. That location closed in November 2020, during the pandemic: https://bit.ly/44OioBd Sushi Mon reopened in February 2021 in its current location at the relatively-new Glenwood Place mixed-use development. It's situated on the ground floor inside an office building. You can't see it from the street. Free parking is available in the adjacent deck at 3705 National Drive. This is a small restaurant and at the time of our visit, they didn't take reservations. Not ideal. I guesstimate the dining room can seat about 30 people comfortably, including at the sushi bar. They had additional seating outside in the office building lobby, but that seating had a different, colder vibe. Instead of being seated outside, our group decided to wait for an inside table. We all thought the wait was worth it because the atmosphere inside was much better because it was an actual restaurant atmosphere. I made sure to add our party to Sushi Mon's waitlist via Yelp when we were on the way. Yelp provided live estimated wait times. Our full party (5) arrived and checked in by the time Yelp told us to. Despite using the waitlist feature, I was aware there still might be a wait. At the host stand, we were given an estimated wait time of 25-35 minutes. We asked if we could get drinks at the bar while we waited. We were told no and directed to The Iron Oaks around the corner (same building): https://bit.ly/3YguccO We got drinks and waited there until I got a text from Sushi Mon. Our actual wait time ended up being right around 25 minutes on a Saturday around 6:30pm. "Table is ALMOST ready" text came through at 6:32pm and we had 10 minutes to arrive. "Powered by Yelp Waitlist." Inside, the restaurant was modern, simple, and elegant. At dinner, the food and drink menus were pretty straightforward. They run a tight ship. No cocktails, only a few beers. One thing I noticed - that I was kind of expecting to see - was a full-blown omakase option. They didn't have one. It was "only" the eight-piece Nigiri Omakase option, which all five of us ended up ordering, along with some other dishes to share. That said, I do think this place is legit in terms of the dishes and ingredient quality. While some sushi aficionados may find the selection to be limited, I think it is decent for the area. The nigiri was superb. If I heard our server correctly, the Nigiri Omakase consisted of Seabream with kosher salt and lemon juice, Ocean Trout with shallot chip, Shima-aji (striped jack, didn't see this one on the menu), Yellowtail with serrano pepper, Amberjack with scallion, Bluefin Tuna Toro with rice cracker, Negitoro (minced raw tuna) with wasabi and scallion inside and topped with scallion, and King Shrimp with garlic chip. Since I'm allergic to shrimp, I got a Salmon with Salmon Roe (ikura) on top. Most of the pieces came with soy sauce and wasabi, so there was no separate soy sauce and wasabi. I believe the King Shrimp came with garlic butter. The hand roll was fantastic. Apparently, the Tamago contained crustacean, so I was subbed in Eel (unagi) instead. It was yummy. The other dishes were good, but didn't shine like the Nigiri Omakase. The Kama wasn't among the best my wife and I have had, but we did like how there were three different types served in a single order. The drinks were par for the course. They could've been better. Service was great. Our server was Donna and she did a wonderful job. She was kind and attentive. Our entire order came out quick. Sushi Mon is owned by chef-owner Chris Lee. I will say this place is small, there is seating outside the door and a few booth and tables inside. I sat at the bar in front of the sushi chefs soo cool. The ambiance in nice beautiful music and attentive staff. The food was amazing. Great menu, fresh sushi and bold flavors. I love the think slices of salmon and scallop such I I got. First time dinning here, as it was recommended by a friend, we had high expectations. However, we were severely underwhelmed by the whole experience. We were surprised part of the dinning room was in the lobby of an office building which was fine because we were mainly there for the sushi and did not care for the ambiance. The food was the most surprising part of the night. We ordered tamago sushi but what came out looked like pound cakes without any rice. However, our daughter didn't mind it and ate it with delight since it was cake and she was hungry The rest of our food came and it was very average. The rice was soggy and fish had no taste. Then came the wait for the last roll we ordered which was the unagi roll. Over 30 minutes passed since we finished the other food we've ordered the roll still hasn't arrived. After asking our sever then another server for the roll, it finally came, and it was a huge disappointment. One of the worst eel rolls we've ever eaten. The rice was even more mushy than the other rolls and there was not much eel to be found. We were done at that point and since we barely saw our server that night, we paid our bill and quickly left. Sushi Mon remains my favorite sushi spot in the Triangle. The quality and freshness of the fish is the best I've had in this area, and I love that their speciality rolls are well-thought out and carefully prepared to ensure that their isn't too much rice and that the flavors of the sauces and toppings complement one another while allowing the seafood to remain star of the show. I recently tried the Rock Salt Salmon for the first time and that will be a must-order for me from here on out. The service has been stellar on each visit. The interior of the restaurant itself is quite small and intimate but there is also seating in the lovely lobby area which is a good choice if you want a quieter dinning experience. The music was a bit loud on our last visit, so the lobby area would probably be my preference next time. I want to just take a moment to also note my appreciation of the beautiful dishes they use, the beautiful mid-century modern vibe of the chairs and tables and the stunning bar. I've always sat at the tables for two, so I can't speak for other tables, but the seats at the two-person tables inside the restaurant are so lovely and comfortable that I seriously considered asking where they got them so I could buy some for my home. Sushi Mon doesn't take reservations excepting holidays such as Valentine's Day, so there may be a bit of a wait depending upon when you arrive. On our most recent visit, we opted for an early dinner arriving at 5pm on a Sunday evening. Omakase in context Is this top tier omakase? No. But is it good enough? Yes. Omakase in context. Not bad at all for the area. In the triangle, everyone knows msushi is king. Sushi mon is a new challenger. Their omakase is served all at once. The fish is pretty fresh and tender. Flavor is good THO it may be hard to tell given the amount of spice/sauce/wasabi they put on. One could argue that they are catering to local taste. Overall, you get what you pay for. This is the epitome of $45 omakase. read more

This is a small place and is frequently quite busy with a wait list. I was there tonight for the first time in a while. The service was terrible. i didn't recognize any of the wait staff so I'm guessing they must be new. The staff seemed to be more interested in hanging out and hugging each other than paying attention to their customers. I find that those that aren't ok with tight spaces aren't on Yelp. The menu is solid. The options are on the higher end as far as composition and pricing. We had plenty of time to decide on drinks and small plate starters. Every dish served was fresh with pleasant flavors and appealing aesthetics. The drawbacks... there is no notice given of last seating time or kitchen closure before posted closing time. Approximately 30 minutes into our seating we were informed they weren't sure if they could put our last order request in. Meanwhile the table beside us wasn't given this warning until right at posted closing time. Service was not great for us, however the table next to us received very attentive service the entire time we were there. We appeared to be the server's only two tables. Excellent service and top quality sushi! I stopped by with some girlfriends for the first time and had such a hard time picking what I want because everything looked so good! I love a omakase so I got their Nigiri Omakase for $45 and it was worth it! Every piece was the perfect bite!
