I have been going to Kohnen's for decades. I am often in the Bakersfield and Tehachapi areas for work, and we always stop in for a great meal when passing through on road trips. Tuesday, March 10th, we traveled to Bakersfield to pick up a vehicle I had purchased, and of course had to stop by Kohnen's. My wife and I split a Tuna and Cheddar Panini, and a loaded Turkey (we arrived too late for Sourdough!!). It is difficult to walk away without a mini-pie (try them all, but blackberry is freaking amazing!!). As always, Danelle was there with her typical congeniality and work ethic! We love her!! I visited Kohnen's Bakery Tehachapi yesterday with my family, and this was honestly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I only purchased two items -- one cream puff and one slice of cheesecake -- but the cashier charged my card THREE times due to repeated mistakes. Here's exactly what happened: 1) My first card (Card A) was charged $11.20. The cashier asked me if I wanted a receipt, and I said yes. Then she told me the receipt didn't come out because the transaction "didn't go through," and asked me to provide my card again. 2) I gave the same card again, and this time she charged $11.69. 3) Then again, she told me that it didn't go through, so I used a different debit card (Card B), which was charged $11.20. While sitting at the table with my family, I immediately checked my bank account and thought I had only been charged twice. I spoke to a staff member at the store and requested a refund for one of the $11.20 charges, which was processed. However, today I realized I had actually been charged three times, meaning there was still another $11.20 that needed to be refunded. So I called the bakery and asked to speak with a manager. I spoke with someone named Danielle. I calmly explained the entire situation and told her I would send all my receipts and bank transaction records by email so they could double-check and confirm everything. She said ok and gave me their email address, but it was very long, and I was concerned about making a mistake while writing it down. So I politely asked if she could text me the email address instead. Her response was extremely rude -- she said, "I'm not required to do that," and told me to just write it down myself if I had a pen and paper. Although I was already uncomfortable with her attitude, I carefully wrote it down and sent the email. However, the email bounced back as invalid, even though I had confirmed the spelling with her multiple times over the phone. When I called again, Danielle answered and said, "Ma'am," in a very dismissive tone, and told me that they had found the three charges and had already processed refunds for both $11.20 transactions. I tried to confirm which card the refund was going to, since I used two different cards, but after putting me on hold for a long time, she read off a card number that was not mine. When I told her that wasn't my card, she insisted those were the only transactions for $11.20 yesterday and told me to "check my bank in a few days" and call back if the refund doesn't show up. And, she didn't apologize for the mistake, even though they charged my cards three times and wasted a significant amount of my time. Even yesterday, when I asked for an apology, I only received one reluctantly after I pointed out that they had made a mistake -- and even then, the response was dismissive, as if I should just accept it because they were "taking care of it." The attitude throughout this entire situation was rude, unprofessional, and extremely frustrating. The cheesecake was very good. But because of this experience, I would never come back. We drove all the way from Los Angeles to Tehachapi with my family, expecting a pleasant visit, but this bakery completely ruined the day. Being charged a total of $34.09 for just two small items due to repeated errors is unacceptable. If your staff cannot properly process payments, they should not be working as cashiers. Situations like this should never happen. What's even worse is that after making multiple mistakes, there was not a single sincere apology -- only attitude, dismissiveness, and instructions for me to keep checking my bank and call back again. My time is valuable. This entire situation could have been avoided if things were handled properly from the beginning. This was an extremely unpleasant experience, and I am very disappointed. Service here was outstanding. I love watching everyone in the kitchen work as a team and a family. You can tell that they not only know what they're doing but they're enjoying themselves. Aside from not the place was packed and they still got our food out pretty quickly. Every time I've come here, this place is buzzing, which is always a great sign! They have wonderful indoor and outdoor seating as well. My daughter and I shared the Cuban sandwich with a small salad and two drinks. This was too much food for us by the way. We finished our halves of our sandwiches and were so stuffed. Could have totally done without the salad although it was delicious. We also ordered their zucchini bread and a cream puff and love them. Got here late Tuesday but they were still open. Even though I got there late they took me in. Very nice people and they gave me some great suggestions. They pies are really good! We've visited before as a family for lunch and had a great time. Sandwiches, pastries and drinks are ordered at the counter. Plenty of tables are available inside and on the patio. Visiting area & trying out different eateries during our stay. We attended the Annual Apple Festival, missed out on apple pies and wife was craving something sweet. Stopped in & immediately felt like we were back in Germany (we were stationed there years ago). Loved the decor and the design of the dining area. You order at a counter which is full of temptations- LOL. Friendly Staff assist with your selections, still no apple pie (got to be early for best selections). Visiting for Valentine's weekend and cane across this Beautiful German bakery very reasonably priced. Several employees working together and our attendant forgot a couple things but it all worked out she fixed the errors. This was my first time stopping by Kohnen's on our way to Yosemite NP. We wanted a sandwich and pastry and this was the perfect place to get them. The location was super easy to find and the bakery is part of the Tehachapi Train Depot Museum. Which would make it ideal if you have little ones. The employees were very friendly and the ambiance was laid back. We tried the Cubano and the Reuben sandwich and both were so delicious. The sandwiches were loaded with super tasty meats. I especially loved the Reuben because of all the sauce and sour kraut. Before I forget, let me mention that the sandwiches come with a small bag of chips which I wasn't paying attention and ended up buying a bag of chips. Now to the pastry's, OMG the carrot cake! Kohnen's carrot cake is one of the best carrot cakes I've had. From the frosting to the two layers of deliciousness. I bought one to eat there and one to go. The service is always great.. and on the day of the apple festival I popped in to grab a few treats and the lady at the register told me.She made dog biscuits and asked me if I had a dog and would I like to try them... I have three dogs and i'm so glad I said yes, because my senior rescue dog has lost a lot of teeth in the last year and has made his eating habits change. It's a lot harder to find soft dog treats that he enjoys.. he loved these cookies so much! He ate the whole package over two days! The sandwiches were good (they were very heavy on the mayo) and the pastries decent. The sourdough sandwich bread and cinnamon roll were the stars of the order. We have had better and much worse. The variety was good. We stopped on a road trip and was there before 7am. It took 30-40 minutes for our order to be completed. Staff was ok, one friendly guy at the counter, the others didn't crack a smile. A couple locals came in after us, placed orders and were bumped ahead of our order... So on our get away we were told by several people that we had to try the bakery. They were not wrong. Im only sad that we got there so late. So my advice is get there early. I missed out on the morning pastries but we were able to get cherry pie and a small apple caramel pie, both delicious . The ambiance was so charming. They have a gift shop attached with neat items. We purchased a really nice candle, with a really unique smell. Service was impeccable, we were greeted when we walked in and the guy who helped me choose my dessert was really nice. This my favorite place in Tehachapi. Every turn we come, I have to stop off here and get fresh pastries and sandwiches. Today we got a roast beef and turkey sandwich. Both were excellent. I usually give them high marks, but this experience did not meet their standards. Worse, it affected my holiday. On Sunday, Dec. 21 I called in an order for 8 loaves of their fantastic cheddar cheese bread. I try to introduce everyone I can to this great bread. Because they always close Wednesdays and Thursdays, I made sure to give them time. Today (Tuesday) I went to pick up my loaves, and someone misread the order, and made individual rolls. The cashier said, " I'm sorry," once, then another woman came by and said it was her mistake, as she wrote the wrong thing. I dont know why she was involved, because I placed the order with a man. Anyway, she said it was her mistake, and they just don't have it. I waited to see if they would offer anything to make it up, but no. The responsible one didn't even apologize. She just shrugged and said "We don't have it". I'm a senior on a fixed income, and was going to give the bread to visiting relatives as my meager contribution to the holidays, as I can't afford many gifts.
