I have been going to Kohnen's for decades. I am often in the Bakersfield and Tehachapi areas for work, and we always stop in for a great meal when passing through on road trips. Tuesday, March 10th, we traveled to Bakersfield to pick up a vehicle I had purchased, and of course had to stop by Kohnen's. My wife and I split a Tuna and Cheddar Panini, and a loaded Turkey (we arrived too late for Sourdough!!). It is difficult to walk away without a mini-pie (try them all, but blackberry is freaking amazing!!). As always, Danelle was there with her typical congeniality and work ethic! We love her!! I visited Kohnen's Bakery Tehachapi yesterday with my family, and this was honestly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I only purchased two items -- one cream puff and one slice of cheesecake -- but the cashier charged my card THREE times due to repeated mistakes. Here's exactly what happened: 1) My first card (Card A) was charged $11.20. The cashier asked me if I wanted a receipt, and I said yes. Then she told me the receipt didn't come out because the transaction "didn't go through," and asked me to provide my card again. 2) I gave the same card again, and this time she charged $11.69. 3) Then again, she told me that it didn't go through, so I used a different debit card (Card B), which was charged $11.20. While sitting at the table with my family, I immediately checked my bank account and thought I had only been charged twice. I spoke to a staff member at the store and requested a refund for one of the $11.20 charges, which was processed. However, today I realized I had actually been charged three times, meaning there was still another $11.20 that needed to be refunded. So I called the bakery and asked to speak with a manager. I spoke with someone named Danielle. I calmly explained the entire situation and told her I would send all my receipts and bank transaction records by email so they could double-check and confirm everything. She said ok and gave me their email address, but it was very long, and I was concerned about making a mistake while writing it down. So I politely asked if she could text me the email address instead. Her response was extremely rude -- she said, "I'm not required to do that," and told me to just write it down myself if I had a pen and paper. Although I was already uncomfortable with her attitude, I carefully wrote it down and sent the email. However, the email bounced back as invalid, even though I had confirmed the spelling with her multiple times over the phone. When I called again, Danielle answered and said, "Ma'am," in a very dismissive tone, and told me that they had found the three charges and had already processed refunds for both $11.20 transactions. I tried to confirm which card the refund was going to, since I used two different cards, but after putting me on hold for a long time, she read off a card number that was not mine. When I told her that wasn't my card, she insisted those were the only transactions for $11.20 yesterday and told me to "check my bank in a few days" and call back if the refund doesn't show up. And, she didn't apologize for the mistake, even though they charged my cards three times and wasted a significant amount of my time. Even yesterday, when I asked for an apology, I only received one reluctantly after I pointed out that they had made a mistake -- and even then, the response was dismissive, as if I should just accept it because they were "taking care of it." The attitude throughout this entire situation was rude, unprofessional, and extremely frustrating. The cheesecake was very good. But because of this experience, I would never come back. We drove all the way from Los Angeles to Tehachapi with my family, expecting a pleasant visit, but this bakery completely ruined the day. Being charged a total of $34.09 for just two small items due to repeated errors is unacceptable. If your staff cannot properly process payments, they should not be working as cashiers. Situations like this should never happen. What's even worse is that after making multiple mistakes, there was not a single sincere apology -- only attitude, dismissiveness, and instructions for me to keep checking my bank and call back again. My time is valuable. This entire situation could have been avoided if things were handled properly from the beginning. This was an extremely unpleasant experience, and I am very disappointed. Service here was outstanding. I love watching everyone in the kitchen work as a team and a family. You can tell that they not only know what they're doing but they're enjoying themselves. Aside from not the place was packed and they still got our food out pretty quickly. Every time I've come here, this place is buzzing, which is always a great sign! They have wonderful indoor and outdoor seating as well. My daughter and I shared the Cuban sandwich with a small salad and two drinks. This was too much food for us by the way. We finished our halves of our sandwiches and were so stuffed. Could have totally done without the salad although it was delicious. We also ordered their zucchini bread and a cream puff and love them. Delicious baked goods, a specialty of the German culture. Last time I stopped in, I picked up a delicious Bear Claw with a cup of coffee. We've visited before as a family for lunch and had a great time. Sandwiches, pastries and drinks are ordered at the counter. Plenty of tables are available inside and on the patio. Many of the signs are bilingual English/German (for example "Knives/Messer"), something you don't see everyday. Free parking in the lot and on the street. read more

Super cute bakery and lunch place in old town tehachapi. Although not much parking, we were able to get a spot in their 60 minute slots. Even though it was busy, our order line went fast. If ordering a sandwich, they have custom order forms on clip boards out side which makes the line go faster. Most sandwiches are between $10 and $15. Visiting area & trying out different eateries during our stay. We attended the Annual Apple Festival, missed out on apple pies and wife was craving something sweet. Stopped in & immediately felt like we were back in Germany (we were stationed there years ago). Loved the decor and the design of the dining area. You order at a counter which is full of temptations- LOL. Friendly Staff assist with your selections, still no apple pie (got to be early for best selections). Wife walked out with a coffee (very good), a blueberry pie, and a slice of German Chocolate Cake. WOW- The German Chocolate Cake was absolutely AMAZING. We eat here annually for the Western Swing-out. It's a bakery but it's also an excellent deli. I always have the Cuban sandwich on Panini bread. It's delicious. My wife has the vegetarian sandwich. Their baked goods are excellent. Service is good and ambiance is western. read more

Several employees working together and our attendant forgot a couple things but it all worked out she fixed the errors. This was my first time stopping by Kohnen's on our way to Yosemite NP. We wanted a sandwich and pastry and this was the perfect place to get them. The location was super easy to find and the bakery is part of the Tehachapi Train Depot Museum. Which would make it ideal if you have little ones. The employees were very friendly and the ambiance was laid back. We tried the Cubano and the Reuben sandwich and both were so delicious. The sandwiches were loaded with super tasty meats. I especially loved the Reuben because of all the sauce and sour kraut. Before I forget, let me mention that the sandwiches come with a small bag of chips which I wasn't paying attention and ended up buying a bag of chips. Now to the pastry's, OMG the carrot cake! Kohnen's carrot cake is one of the best carrot cakes I've had. From the frosting to the two layers of deliciousness. I bought one to eat there and one to go. It was recommended by a family member to check it out and based on the incredibly long line, we knew it was a great rec! That have amazing pastries and they definitely sell out! I pre ordered a bunch of fresh Pretzels for an Oktoberfest party in Bakersfield. Announced my arrival for 9 am to pick up the fresh and still warm Pretzels. What I got were ice cold and " sweaty" way thinner than normally pretty hard twists! I only noticed the condition of the Pretzels once returned back to Bakersfield 1 hour later and to late to return. So I called and complaint about the condition of the food. Not only was the manager very unfriendly nor customer service like - the person , manager, also hung up the phone on me !!! The service is always great.. and on the day of the apple festival I popped in to grab a few treats and the lady at the register told me.She made dog biscuits and asked me if I had a dog and would I like to try them... I have three dogs and i'm so glad I said yes, because my senior rescue dog has lost a lot of teeth in the last year and has made his eating habits change. It's a lot harder to find soft dog treats that he enjoys.. he loved these cookies so much! He ate the whole package over two days! The sandwiches were good (they were very heavy on the mayo) and the pastries decent. The sourdough sandwich bread and cinnamon roll were the stars of the order. We have had better and much worse. The variety was good. We stopped on a road trip and was there before 7am. It took 30-40 minutes for our order to be completed. Staff was ok, one friendly guy at the counter, the others didn't crack a smile. A couple locals came in after us, placed orders and were bumped ahead of our order... I can tell it is a great place to order for companies. One guy ordered a dozen different sandwiches to go. It's a solid 3.75 and I rounded up to 4. So on our get away we were told by several people that we had to try the bakery. They were not wrong. Im only sad that we got there so late. So my advice is get there early. I missed out on the morning pastries but we were able to get cherry pie and a small apple caramel pie, both delicious . The ambiance was so charming. They have a gift shop attached with neat items. We purchased a really nice candle, with a really unique smell. Service was impeccable, we were greeted when we walked in and the guy who helped me choose my dessert was really nice. My wife and I were visiting from SoCal for a couple of days. It was a Saturday when we visited this nostalgic town. The bakery was bustling with the line about 15 people long. It moved along fairly quickly. The bakery display was VERY attractive!! It was impossible to find a bare spot on any wall!! Service was very friendly, and the food was delicious. This my favorite place in Tehachapi. Every turn we come, I have to stop off here and get fresh pastries and sandwiches. Today we got a roast beef and turkey sandwich. Both were excellent.
