Exterior of German deli. NOTE: Take Out Only!
    Mike W.

3.5 Stars First visit and had a decent experience. We stopped in to grab some lunch and noticed that they offer "Take Out Only", even though there were a couple small tables/chairs inside. The couple running the store didn't have the greatest customer service/communication skills, and I was a little disappointed in the side dishes for our lunches. My wife and I ordered the Bratwurst Plates ($9.50) which came with a choice of one of three types of brats, 2 sides, and bread or bun. The brats were delicious and super flavorful; however, the sides were only "okay". The sauerkraut was on the sweet side, with no acidity, the warm German potato salad seemed to be missing something, pickles and mustard, maybe, and the macaroni salad was mayo heavy. This could all be personal preference, but I've had better. I did love the meat, cheese, and pastry cases and the store portion. We picked up some veal brats, rye bread, and other German goodies (red cabbage and crispy pickles) to take home. They have German greeting cards and all kinds of other sundries. I would stop in again when in the area and try something else off the menu. Definitely pick up some German goodies to bring home to my kitchen.

This was such a lovely lunch spot! We ordered a New York sandwich with corned beef and a polish bratwurst (which came with two sides for less than $10). The two owners were an older German couple that made it feel like I was in Germany again (aka: I needed to have the exact order ready with no mistakes). Everything was delicious and made to order.

This review is for the Ruben Sandwich at the Upland German Deli Wow! What a find, and it's been here for as long as I've been here. How did I not know of this gem before? Made a wrong turn and stumbled upon a place that has the best Ruben, dollar for dollar, I have ever had! The pic shows just half the sandwich on a 9 inch plate...portioned out that would cost just $4.37. Yep, the whole darn samich is only $8.75. How does Subway stay in business with quality mom 'n' pop shop's like this? Service was great, being greeted warmly upon arrival and answering any questions a newby might have. This is not just a sandwich shop as they have pantry's full of German groceries, along with homemade pastries. Food A+ Service A+ Prices A+

Big fan of this place! It's really good and very affordable. The owners are very sweet and welcoming. I try different "specials" every time I go... or I'll get the schnitzel. I haven't had anything I did not enjoy here. And, there pastries are awesome.

The food was great, will definitely come back again. Loved all the German decor inside. I wish I had tried some pastries, the tiramisu looked so good.

Great sandwich for a great price I paid 9 dollars with tax! Came in for the soup and salad combo but they told me that they stopped making soup. Will definitely come back again. Only issue is that they didn't use gloves to make my sandwich which wouldn't be a problem if I knew they washed their hands but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they did.

Love this place!! I got the Reuben sandwich the first time I came and have not altered from it. Super cute authentic vibe (from what I can tell). Really cool different options in food, drinks and sides. The Reuben is very good size and I can't believe the killer price $8 for a huge sandwich they are so underpriced! Highly recommended and great authentic German experience and service from the owners, highly recommended for something different or just every day for lunch!

Great little spot to give you a little taste of Europe. Delicious cabbage rolls that reminded me of home and sweet and tasty deserts. Food was hot and there was a lot of it and the owners were so sweet! Purchased some other items and for how much stuff I got the prices are good for German goodies! Excited to come again,

Let it be known, the owner lady (who I share the same exact name with) is really off-putting lol. She has a strange personality that really does come off as rude. BUT, she told us that's her schtick. My husband, who's of German descent, was pretty pissed by her attitude. She said she was joking and that she's known for being that way. We were honestly just like wtf lol. However I did read reviews and even articles about her, that she does this for fun to keep work "interesting and not boring." Well, the verdict is. We like the food. A lot! We like it so much that we'd go back, even if her attitude is weird lol. My chicken schnitzel sandwich was simple but amazing because of the curry sauce and mayo I think. My husband enjoyed his Nuremberg bratwurst which comes with 2 sides. The sides came out nice and warm, they were good! The potato salad almost tastes like a peppered pasta. Sauerkraut was yummy. We will come back and try the other dishes! It's best to order in advance for stuff. Coleslaw and pasta too! It's a bummer though that the food is only given to-go. Can't eat there, but apparently before the pandemic you could. There's a couple tables in there, but Kristine said you can't eat there.

    The best Beef Dip ever!

They have the best Beef Dip sandwiches ever! Kristine the owner loves to tease and is a hoot. To make it even better their prices are much lower than they could be charging. It is worth going out of you way to come here.

If you're a fan of authentic European flavors, the German Deli is a must-visit spot. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by the rich, comforting aromas that transport you straight to Germany. Overall, the German Deli offers a charming, authentic experience that showcases the best of German culinary traditions. It's the kind of place that feels like a little slice of Germany right in your neighborhood.

I only purchased two items -- one cream puff and one slice of cheesecake -- but the cashier charged my card THREE times due to repeated mistakes. Here's exactly what happened: 1) My first card (Card A) was charged $11.20. The cashier asked me if I wanted a receipt, and I said yes. Then she told me the receipt didn't come out because the transaction "didn't go through," and asked me to provide my card again. 2) I gave the same card again, and this time she charged $11.69. 3) Then again, she told me that it didn't go through, so I used a different debit card (Card B), which was charged $11.20. While sitting at the table with my family, I immediately checked my bank account and thought I had only been charged twice. I spoke to a staff member at the store and requested a refund for one of the $11.20 charges, which was processed. However, today I realized I had actually been charged three times, meaning there was still another $11.20 that needed to be refunded. So I called the bakery and asked to speak with a manager. I spoke with someone named Danielle. I calmly explained the entire situation and told her I would send all my receipts and bank transaction records by email so they could double-check and confirm everything. She said ok and gave me their email address, but it was very long, and I was concerned about making a mistake while writing it down. So I politely asked if she could text me the email address instead. Her response was extremely rude -- she said, "I'm not required to do that," and told me to just write it down myself if I had a pen and paper. Although I was already uncomfortable with her attitude, I carefully wrote it down and sent the email. However, the email bounced back as invalid, even though I had confirmed the spelling with her multiple times over the phone. When I called again, Danielle answered and said, "Ma'am," in a very dismissive tone, and told me that they had found the three charges and had already processed refunds for both $11.20 transactions. I tried to confirm which card the refund was going to, since I used two different cards, but after putting me on hold for a long time, she read off a card number that was not mine. When I told her that wasn't my card, she insisted those were the only transactions for $11.20 yesterday and told me to "check my bank in a few days" and call back if the refund doesn't show up. And, she didn't apologize for the mistake, even though they charged my cards three times and wasted a significant amount of my time. Even yesterday, when I asked for an apology, I only received one reluctantly after I pointed out that they had made a mistake -- and even then, the response was dismissive, as if I should just accept it because they were "taking care of it." The attitude throughout this entire situation was rude, unprofessional, and extremely frustrating. The cheesecake was very good. But because of this experience, I would never come back. We drove all the way from Los Angeles to Tehachapi with my family, expecting a pleasant visit, but this bakery completely ruined the day. Being charged a total of $34.09 for just two small items due to repeated errors is unacceptable. If your staff cannot properly process payments, they should not be working as cashiers. Situations like this should never happen. What's even worse is that after making multiple mistakes, there was not a single sincere apology -- only attitude, dismissiveness, and instructions for me to keep checking my bank and call back again. My time is valuable. This entire situation could have been avoided if things were handled properly from the beginning. This was an extremely unpleasant experience, and I am very disappointed. Cf) For reference, the other $16.05 receipt is for bread that my brother purchased.

The Spicy Hungarian sausage with mustard was absolutely a banger as well. It's a nice light kick and savory flavor with each bite. The Reuben and potato salad combo was especially hearty and satisfying, with rich, savory flavors that felt very true to a classic deli experience. The Hungarian sausage had a great depth of flavor, savory and well-seasoned without tipping into being overly salty. The cherry strudel was a standout to end the meal, filled generously with cherries and syrup, wrapped in a flaky pastry that balanced sweetness and texture really well. The beer tied everything together nicely, cold and refreshing, and exactly what you'd want with this kind of meal. I still prefer Busy Bees in San Pedro, but this was a nice alternative within the IE area. Price: George's Market falls into a casual, reasonable deli pricing tier. Sandwiches like the Reuben and similar deli items are generally in the mid‑teens range, while sausage plates and hot meals can push closer to around $15-20 depending on what you get. Beer and imported items vary, but overall you can expect to spend about $15-25 per person for a solid, filling meal. Given the quality, portion sizes, and specialty nature of the food, the pricing feels fair. Ambiance: The space is part cozy German market, part deli counter, with a warm, wood-heavy interior that feels inviting and a bit nostalgic. There's both indoor seating and an outdoor area, giving flexibility depending on the weather or how busy it is. Beyond the dining area, the market itself sells a wide range of German groceries and specialty products, which adds to the charm and makes it feel like more of an experience than just a quick meal. Service: Service was good and impressively efficient given how busy it gets. There was a noticeable line when we went (especially on a weekend lunch time), but things moved steadily and the staff kept everything organized without feeling rushed or chaotic. Friendly and straightforward overall. Parking: Parking is one of the easier parts of the visit. It's located in a plaza with a large shared lot, so there's plenty of space and no real hassle finding a spot, even during peak hours.

Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. I ordered the chicken schnitzel with mushroom gravy, my boyfriend got the Hungarian brat with spaetzle, and our friend ordered the Hungarian brat on a roll. Starting with the schnitzel: it wasn't completely terrible, but it definitely wasn't good. The breading was some what soggy and sliding off the chicken, and the chicken itself had almost no seasoning besides an odd lemony sourness. The mashed potatoes were honestly awful -- extremely sour, like they were overloaded with sour cream but missing butter, salt, or any real flavor. I LOVE mashed potatoes and only managed two bites before giving up. The red cabbage was overcooked, mushy, and had a slightly off taste. Overall, the schnitzel plate was maybe a 2/10, and those points go solely to the fact that the chicken itself was technically edible. My boyfriend's meal somehow managed to be worse. The bratwurst was fine, but tasted frozen and reheated rather than fresh. The sauerkraut, according to him, "tasted like dirty socks." The spaetzle was genuinely offensive -- mushy, overly bland, and tossed with what looked like hydrated diced mushrooms that literally tasted like dirt. I honestly questioned whether it had gone bad. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself felt dirty and had a strange smell throughout. It honestly seems like a place locals may still visit out of habit or convenience, but it no longer reflects what I imagine it once was. It's unfortunate, because there's something special about a restaurant that's been around for 65 years and still tries to maintain its old-school charm. Sadly, the food and cleanliness just don't live up to that legacy anymore. Save your money unless you're only stopping in for an overpriced German draft beer. We definitely won't be back.
