Always enjoy stopping by this place for a weekend lunch; especially in the winter time. It feels so comfy and fun. Their soups are always so delicious and their sandwiches are equally as great! I especially like their Cuban sandwich. I also like how efficient and friendly their staff is at taking your orders! read more

This my favorite place in Tehachapi. Every turn we come, I have to stop off here and get fresh pastries and sandwiches. Today we got a roast beef and turkey sandwich. Both were excellent. I think it's due to the thin cut onions, lettuce, cheese abs meat. Everything feels delicate including the homemade bread. We got the sourdough and the Sheepherders. The place is cute and quaint and always clean, plus the servers are friendly and helpful. Highly recommend. read more

Food was good. We went at lunch and it was very busy, but it went quickly. Ordering system was efficient We ordered 6 sandwiches, cookies and an eclair. All delicious. read more

There is a small parking lot right next to the bakery; however gets full quick. Long line , but moves pretty fast. We ordered a sandwich made for two people; had all the meats n cheeses on it ; and toppings. Very filling. Staff was patient and kind. So much stuff to look at , but not enough time. Loved gazing at all the breads and bakery items. Looks so good; makes it hard to choose. Wanted to eat outside on the patio; but only a few tables and all were occupied, so took our food to go. Not much space for waiting for your food; and not be in the way. read more

I usually give them high marks, but this experience did not meet their standards. Worse, it affected my holiday. On Sunday, Dec. 21 I called in an order for 8 loaves of their fantastic cheddar cheese bread. I try to introduce everyone I can to this great bread. Because they always close Wednesdays and Thursdays, I made sure to give them time. Today (Tuesday) I went to pick up my loaves, and someone misread the order, and made individual rolls. The cashier said, " I'm sorry," once, then another woman came by and said it was her mistake, as she wrote the wrong thing. I dont know why she was involved, because I placed the order with a man. Anyway, she said it was her mistake, and they just don't have it. I waited to see if they would offer anything to make it up, but no. The responsible one didn't even apologize. She just shrugged and said "We don't have it". I'm a senior on a fixed income, and was going to give the bread to visiting relatives as my meager contribution to the holidays, as I can't afford many gifts. So, I thanked them for ruining Christmas for me, and walked out. No one said a word of apology. Not sure if I'll be returning, cheese bread notwithstanding read more

Do not miss the chance to stop at Kohnen's on your road trip! It is worth the side quest to get here! It's nestled in this cute historic town of Tehachapi which is easy to get to from the 58. Parking is easy with a lot right next door. We came on a Sunday at lunch time and waited in line for 5 minutes. There are tons of German imports such as pickles, pasta, beers, and the bakery display is vast. We got a salad and the Poor Boy, two pastries, pickles, noodles, and 2 drinks. The poor boy was absolutely delicious - we were hungry and still only ate half of it. The salad was also very large and the quality of fresh greens and portion of veggies was beyond what we expected. It's a super cool spot to sit on the patio and see the hikers from the PCT come by. read more

Used to be my favorite spot in town!!! Loved everything they have! We went by there when we went to the apple festival this year and I have a baby in a stroller and we were all excited to go in and get some goodies! But then on the window it said no strollers allowed.... It made me feel like we were not welcome in side just for the fact we had a kid! I understand that it's a little tight when there's a lot of people, but how unwelcoming it felt. We will not support this place any more read more

Check their calendar for days open first. I called ahead in the morning & ordered sourdough bread. Got there before closing & bought up lots of perfectly baked goodies to take home with me. I've been there other times & had their personalized sandwich & homemade soup. Such a treat to look forward to after a long day of driving. I was hesitating whether to leave a review or not because I was not happy with my experience. I am new to the area and read a lot of great reviews and saw a lot of nice pictures of their food/ pastries. I was excited to finally try this bakery. I will start by saying I had a few pastries and a sandwich and they were in fact great. However, the customer service was awful. The woman who helped me was so frustrated because I was still deciding what pastry I wanted. I informed her that it was my first time at their bakery and she just seemed frustrated and was trying to rush me. There were people behind me but they were also deciding what they were going to order. It wasn't extremely busy where I felt I was holding up the line. I quickly picked my pastries. Then I frustrated her even more when I asked her if I had to place my sandwich order with her. I didn't know that I had to fill out a paper to place my sandwich order before hand. If you decide to try this place make sure you know exactly what you want before you get to the front to order or you will be greeted with a very angry employee. read more

This place is simply awesome! After eating their sandwich, I feel like I have been missing a lot in my life before. Their sandwiches are very reasonably priced and very delicious. Everything tastes fresh and I love how you can customize them to your liking. Since it was our first time, we didn't know exactly what to expect but they do have papers when you line up to customize the sandwiches however you like them - from the bread, the filling, the condiments, to the extras. My photos definitely don't do justice to their food! Their pastries and desserts and pastries are worth lining up, too! If Bakersfield would have a similar bakery in town, I would probably be there a lot of times, rotating their menu on a weekly (or even more often) basis! read more

They got so many pastries to choose from I didn't even know what to grab sorry folks I didn't take a good picture of the the display with all the pastries and donuts and cakes I had a Reuben sandwich and it was so much meat on it I can only half of it so they didn't slack on the meat just a short drive from Bakersfield Best time to go is probably during the week we went on a Saturday and it was really really busy but they got our food pretty quickly so if you fill in that German Bavarian vibe this is the place to go pretty cool It was nice to talk to somebody in German for the first time since in awhile atmosphere definitely would go back again read more

You can never go wrong when you visit Kohnen's Bakery. Everything is so fresh and delicious. The breads are so amazing, when I need to get a gift I always stop by and grab some fresh baked items. The poorboy sandwich will feed a whole family. The eclairs are amazing. They make sourdough bread on Tuesdays and Saturday. Make sure to call and reserve yours because they go fast. If you drive through downtown Tehachapi, you're likely to come across this historic German bakery. It is located right in the heart of this railroad town. Opened in 2004, the authentic German bakery continues traditions that date all the way back to 1683. The staff works through the night to prepare hundreds of baked goods from scratch each day. They knead, roll, toss and twist each pretzel, loaf and pastry into their iconic shapes and the bakery case reflects the hard work and dedication of fresh quality killer confectioneries! Such a cute place! We stopped in shortly after lunchtime and this spot was still busy with a line almost out the door. The atmosphere is significant to the area and the food items on display are essential to your visit. We ordered the chocolate croissant, star shaped sugar cookie (perfect for Labor Day) a cinnamon roll and lemon bar. All were absolutely wonderful. Later, found out that the three top favorite items at Kohnen's & they struggle to keep in stock are their eclairs, lemon bars and zucchini bread. The lemon bar was probably the best I've had yet! The bakery has become a popular favorite of local folks and tourists alike, and has since expanded to include a dining space where patrons can feast on sandwiches made with fresh-baked bread and handcrafted soups served in bowls of bread. I have provided their menu in my pics. The Poor Boy sandwiches is a "have to" experience here as far as what we've heard. Next time! This is an absolute MUST if you are passing through the area. They're located at the corner of Curry and Tehachapi Blvd. in historic downtown Tehachapi. read more

Great pastries! Love love love their Hamburger Soup(?) not sure about its actual name. However, it has ground beef and sauerkraut. So flipping good! I was disappointed when I ordered my sandwich and my hubby handed me the bag and it was not what i ordered. Stuff happens. I called to let them know and she (owners daughter, or manager)was quite rude. Hopefully, it was a one off! I'm sure I will never experience that again. I really like the ambiance and their goodies! read more

Bread from scratch type of bakery perfect for a morning stroll. So many pastries to choose from, but I needed something a little hardier, so I went with the water bagels. SO GOOD. Not the most technical bagel and not something I'd get a dozen of, as they were pretty doughy. Again, loved that dough though. Breakfast was so dang good we grabbed and almond croissant for the road. It was delightful, of course. You can tell this place is a local spot, great wag to see the town in the morning! read more

Best poor boy sandwich. Able to make choices. 1 poor boy sandwich can feed 1 - 4 people. Very good!!! Recommend!

More of a 3.5 star place for me. But, since we can't do half stars for Yelp, I rounded up. Cute bakery in the old section of Tehachapi. I made several visits while in town through the winter and spring this year. The atmosphere is quaint and warm. I interacted with a slew of different staff over my visits. Some were friendly and patient, some not so much. The food experience was solid...large selection of fresh sweet and savory pastries. I tried numerous items over my visits. A sampling for this review included the cinnamon roll (which wasn't memorable), peach danish (which was good), and the sausage roll and bear claw (each were great). I typically got a brewed coffee for each visit as well...the coffee was fine, nothing special. Overall, a solid bakery and a frequent stop for me. I'll definitely be back when I'm in town again. read more

We drove to Tehachapi because we read about the owner, Thomas Kohnen, who was featured prominently on the bakery's website and in a Tehachapi magazine that we had picked up at the Bakersfield visitor's center. We hoped to meet Mr. Kohnen, enjoy a nice German bread sandwich with German beer, and take a loaf of Sechskorn brot home with us. Alas, Mr. Kohnen was nowhere to be seen. We found out the store was no longer owned by him, the choice of German bread was highly curtailed, and beer (a nice selection of German beer is listed on his website) wasn't available because they had no liquor license. The only trace of Germany was a giant cuckoo clock that produced a pair of bowing mechanical dolls at 1:00 pm. The restaurant was filled with customers enjoying American style sandwiches and soft drinks. In this alternative universe of a bakery, one wonders what happened to poor Thomas Kohnen. I looked for an obituary or any news about why and when the store changed hands. I found nothing. It was odd that this bakery built its entire identity around Thomas Kohnen and yet no one could tell us much about him. Perhaps he was a figment of AI and never really existed, let alone start a bakery in Tehachapi. read more

The experience here was amazing! The products here always seem fresh and tasteful, the environment is very friendly. It's always clean and well tidy. I come at least 1-3 times a week. The servers/services are also really good. Particularly their cashier Paola, she's so respectful and polite and keeps a smile the whole time ordering, super sweet and easy going. She easily makes me want to come back just from her caring about her job, being super friendly, and caring for the customers. It's a must visit if coming to Tehachapi. Won't regret it. read more

As a Tehachapi resident, I've been going here for years even though the customer service is not the best, because the food is good. A lot of the employees are very rude. After today, I will never give another dime to this business. I ordered 12 croissants for my elderly mother and paid almost $50 for them. It was clearly marked on the receipt as paid. She went in to pick them up and they made her pay again. She did it, because she trusted them. So we paid double, almost $100 for 12 chocolate croissants. I came in today to address the concern and was completely dismissed and talked down to. (Warning: employee with blonde curly hair is very unpleasant and always has been. My lucky day that I got her.) She didn't even let me explain it to her before she walked off and pretended I wasn't there. I have given so much money to this business for the past twenty years and I never will again. I will be filing a fraud claim with my bank to reclaim my money as this is now considered theft to me instead of an honest mistake that we could have worked out. read more
