I am being generous in giving 4 stars- It's the holidays- my experience merits 3.5. It's a cute little place, decorated cozily for Christmas. We chose to sit inside, only barstool tables were available. If I return, definitely only sitting at a table. Both of us were uncomfortable and there was no place for my handbag except my lap. Service - started out good but after paying I didn't get my receipt printed as requested from the male server who took over. The food So many variations of Schnitzel- traditional, with an Asian, California or Mexican spin, for example. I went with pork and for my two sides choose Garlic Brussels Sprouts and Cucumber Dill Salad. My friend loved the schnitzel as do most reviewers. It was light and crispy but I was not a big fan of the tangy taste. The serving is huge at least. The cucumber salad was good after I added salt. Loved the super garlicky roasted sprouts. Would definitely get that again. Beer and wine prices are good. My friend's half liter beer was $9.50! I think there's a tradition that on your birthday, your beer comes in a huge boot-shaped mug. My friend has been here many times and recommends the pretzel with two dipping sauces. Would consider coming here again if I'm in the area and wanted a drink. I still have never tried spaetzel, either. Metered parking on La Brea or free parking on the side street just north of Wirtshaus, on Oak something street.

Environment and service were fantastic. The outdoor seating with lights and sports on was chefs kiss. Our waiters were also attentive and very knowledgeable - he pronounced everything so well! We got some beer (was very light and refreshing), some sausages (tried a beer bratwurst and the special alligator andouille), and the pretzel schnitzel. The sausages were a little too gamey for me, so those weren't my favorite. But we absolutely LOVED the schnitzel! It had cheese and bacon on top and was perfectly breaded. We enjoyed both entrees with 4 delicious sides: mashed potatoes (our fave), egg noodles, fries, sauerkraut. It was a fun place that we'd come to for the schnitzel for sure!

Wirtshaus is my favorite German Biergarten in LA! There's plenty of seating indoor and outdoor and the food and beer selection is amazing. They also have other types of drinks for non beer drinkers. I've always gone there without a reservation but, it's always a good idea to make reservations for big parties, especially on the weekends when it gets very busy. The food here is amazing every time I've gone. They have a good selection and portion sizes are big. My go to dish is the Jager Schnitzel but the sausages are amazing too. I'd recommend getting a few items to share so you can try the pretzel as well. Also, it's good to come hungry because each of the dishes included two side dishes of your choice. My favorite side dishes are the mashed potatoes and the spatzle. They are not so delicious but can be a bit heavy. It's also a plus that they have a small parking lot underground. It can be a bit tricky to find but it's there. There's usually some street parking as well.

Fun atmosphere, great food and beers, service was friendly and fast. Will definitely comeback this was first time and I loved it.

Used to get 2 pieces of chicken, now it's only 1 for $27.50 on Doordash. Very disappointing!
    Kyle M.

My wife and I love this place usually, but tonight we ordered Doordash and we were shocked that the normal portion size seems to have been cut in half, while the price is seemingly higher than we remember. The chicken schnitzel always came with 2 pieces, and tonight both of our orders came with 1 so it definitely wasn't a mistake. At the price point that they charge, I just don't think this is the value that it once was. Food was still tasty as always, just the smaller portion size no longer seems worth it.

Fun German Biergarten that gets very lively in the evenings with a regular crowd who know to reserve a table. They offer a wide array of beers and your typical German food fair. Think schnitzel and pretzels. You can't say no to those two things or your palate needs an inspection. The plethora of courtyard seating and tables along La Brea make this spot a great gathering place for any game day.

The inside venue is small but there is a large space on the outside that is little tucked away from the street. If you come here with a big enough group for your birthday you can get a free boot. Even though the place wasn't that busy, service is kind of mediocre. I got the schnitzel and it was decent. Maybe come here if you want to relive your Octoberfest celebration or your days visiting Bavaria otherwise I would consider other places

Incredible chicken schnitzel. The chicken is so tender and flavorful with a light, crispy breading. My relative that lives nearby always orders the chicken schnitzel, and I totally agree with her. It comes with two sides. I loved my garlicky green beans and buttered spaetzle. Perfect!! Loved my meal at Wirsthaus. A+++

Had to boost my review to 5 starts. Came here on Saturday and as usual great service, vibe and food. The reason for the added star is when ordering my vegan entree and sides our server asked me if I was vegan...I said yes and he made sure to notate that in the order. When ordering the greens beans he said he'd have them hold the butter and explained the fries are also cooked in cross contaminated oil. Wow...I really appreciated going above and beyond for the customer. People whether you're vegan or not you'll love this place. They can get a bit crowded from time because for one...the food, service and atmosphere and two...they show sports. Free parking in the garage around back.

That said, when I'm in a Pub I tend to go for Guinness or some kind of 1/2 & 1/2, and this time I chose Smithwick's with a Guinness topper. My bartender, Sarah, proffered a perfect poor, with a smile and a laugh, and I was ready for a good time. The menu is packed with traditional pub favorites plus other general sandwiches and salads, etc. I decided on their Reuben, which is built with Corned Beef, Swiss, Sauerkraut, both Russian AND Mustard, and it's served with fresh cut Fries. The sandwich was hearty and generously made, with flavorful corned beef boasting all the best of the pickling spices without too much salt -- the cook knows how to balance flavors. The sauerkraut and melty Swiss provided a rich, acidic contrast to the beef, an effect echoed by the blending of Russian with Brown Mustard. Then there was the bread -- an artisan rye with good flavor, appealing texture and just the right amount of fresh seeds to let you know this bread came from an oven not a bag. Fries were hand cut, as advertised, arriving hot and crispy with just the right dusting of salt -- a perfect match for the Reuben. This being Monday night, it was quiet on Colorado Blvd., and the restaurant had only a few people at dinner time. While this was a laid-back visit, I'm well aware the place can get busy and boisterous when people descend on their back-alley entrance, and it's hard to know which scenario would be better: the high energy pulse or the calm conversation. Best to come in multiple times for a proper scientific analysis (as well as several cold pints and a few very good meals).

The bartenders are friendly, attentive, and genuinely on top of things, which is a big reason we've kept coming back. Over time, we've even met some of the owners, and the place has always felt welcoming and well-run, even through ownership changes. That's why this last visit stood out and not in a good way. The bar was packed for the basketball games, and the staff was clearly hustling. Honestly, they could've used more support behind the bar for a crowd like that. Instead, one of the partners seemed to take on the role of... social host. He made sure people knew who he was, but didn't actually step in to help where it mattered. We've seen other partners jump behind the bar or run food when things get busy, so the contrast here was hard to miss. At times, it felt less like leadership and more like a running announcement tour. Meanwhile, the team that was actually working kept pushing through a packed house. The vibe took another hit with the TVs. With so many screens already locked on basketball, it didn't seem like a big ask to change just one on baseball. One of the bartenders even put it on, but a few minutes later, after a guest played into Mr. Big Shot's ego, he went and changed it right back. Just unnecessary, and honestly felt a little performative. We still like this place and really appreciate the staff who show up and do the work. But that interaction definitely left a different impression than what we've come to expect here.

Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. I ordered the chicken schnitzel with mushroom gravy, my boyfriend got the Hungarian brat with spaetzle, and our friend ordered the Hungarian brat on a roll. Starting with the schnitzel: it wasn't completely terrible, but it definitely wasn't good. The breading was some what soggy and sliding off the chicken, and the chicken itself had almost no seasoning besides an odd lemony sourness. The mashed potatoes were honestly awful -- extremely sour, like they were overloaded with sour cream but missing butter, salt, or any real flavor. I LOVE mashed potatoes and only managed two bites before giving up. The red cabbage was overcooked, mushy, and had a slightly off taste. Overall, the schnitzel plate was maybe a 2/10, and those points go solely to the fact that the chicken itself was technically edible. My boyfriend's meal somehow managed to be worse. The bratwurst was fine, but tasted frozen and reheated rather than fresh. The sauerkraut, according to him, "tasted like dirty socks." The spaetzle was genuinely offensive -- mushy, overly bland, and tossed with what looked like hydrated diced mushrooms that literally tasted like dirt. I honestly questioned whether it had gone bad. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself felt dirty and had a strange smell throughout. It honestly seems like a place locals may still visit out of habit or convenience, but it no longer reflects what I imagine it once was. It's unfortunate, because there's something special about a restaurant that's been around for 65 years and still tries to maintain its old-school charm. Sadly, the food and cleanliness just don't live up to that legacy anymore. Save your money unless you're only stopping in for an overpriced German draft beer. We definitely won't be back.

I had placed a phone order, for pick up; upon arrival, I found the service was prompt. I saw my food ready to go, just past the main walk-in area. Almost immediately after that, I was taken care of by the host and on my way. I've been waiting to try this place for ages so on the drive back to work I was excited to steal a piece of meat from the bag. Initial bite flavor was good, meat was tender just a bit on the chewy side.. I wasn't bothered by it too much as I'd have to leave it in an oven warmer at work. Trying to keep food warm, in doing so, I knew there'd be only two possible outcomes, melting tender or either tough & dry. So, the dish of meat and rice sat in the warmer for almost an hour hour and a half. The downhill slope.... Set the "meat " on the veggies and began to eat. Meat after meat, I kept experiencing the same exact texture. It was the same exact rubbery chew, I initially tasted. Each and every piece was the same exact flavor. There was no peak, there was no pitfall. If you cook or grill, you know this is a red flag. Normally, consistency would be a good thing, a Master craftsman type experience, but this was NOT it. As go on, I get the sinking feeling, this can't be real meat. I lock in, the deeper I dig, each piece looks the same, broken apart the same, tastes the same, just various shapes. They can call me crazy for this one - I'll stand by it. Something is not right here. I'm not even going to throw it away. I'm going to study it for the next few days and post an updated review. I hope I'm wrong but as of right now, I'll never revisit this place. Too freaky of an experience. We

The front of the building is a little vaguely marked, and the entrance has speakeasy vibes, which was a surprise. Upon walking in the front door, there is some tiki décor and a small counter in the rear. I remember thinking to myself "what the heck, this is it?". I checked in at the host stand on the left, and was handed me a boarding pass. She then led us through a hidden door behind what looked like a shipping crate. We were now in the real Broken Compass. The interior is a good size. The two-sided bar seats around a dozen. There is a lounge side of the bar that has two large booths along the wall, and another area with comfortable looking couches and lounge chairs. The main dining room has some tiki hut booths, and two sections of tables with half booth and half chair. The décor is pretty extensive with a good mix of pirate, nautical, and tiki themes. There is a lot of bamboo, thatch, rope, cargo netting, skulls and skeletons, port holes, octopus tentacles, jellyfish, tiki lights, and more. The ceiling is dark with various nautical and pirate markings, and even tied up ship sails overhead. The tiki hut booths have the parrots from the enchanted tiki room above them. Even the two restrooms are nautical themed, with beach and marine sounds playing. There is a lot of great décor to look at. We arrived around 2pm on a Sunday, so it wasn't very busy yet. By the time we left a few hours later, it was starting to get busy. We decided to sit at the bar. We started out with the buffalo cauliflower ($14) for an afternoon snack. The serving size was generous, and the buffalo sauce had a good tang. It was served with some sauces, and was surprisingly filling. A nice feature of the cocktail menu is that each drink displays one to three compass stars to indicate the strength of the drink. Their cocktails use a great variety of liquors including ones you don't often see. Many of the ingredients are made in-house. I started out with Chupacabra's Vacation (Demerara Rum, Jamacian Rum, Pomegranate Reduction, Cinnamon, Lime Juice, Bitters, two-star boozy rank, $17). It is served with a flaming lime on top and a little fire show. It was balanced with a light booziness, some light pomegranate flavor, and a cinnamon sprinkle on top. She started out with the Bittersweet Paradise (Jamacian Rum, White Rum, Campari, Passionfruit Syrup, Lemon, Lime, Pineapple, two-star boozy rank, $18). It didn't drink boozy at all, and was passion fruit forward, with light bitterness. My second cocktail was the Bermuda Dune Buggy (Gin, Overproof Rum, Kumquat Liqueur, Cassis, Orange, Lime, Bitters, two-star boozy rank, $18). It had a very unique garnish of a Chartreuse infused gummy which was delicious. The drink was nicely balanced, and didn't really drink boozy even with overproof rum in it. They have a rotating monthly cocktail and she tried the Tropic Like It's Hot (Coconut Washed Lemongrass Infused Rum, Mango, Lemon, Coconut Water, Amaro, $17) which was created by one of our bartenders Daniel. It was served in a Spam can and was light and refreshing with a nice pop of fruit at the start, and a very nice coconut flavor. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and had great conversation with our bartenders Daniel and Monica. They also provided excellent service. Broken Compass supports payment with the InKind app which gives you 20% back (10% on Friday and Saturday) in InKind cash. We had a really great time here, and the drinks, food, décor, and atmosphere were excellent. I purchased a Hork (Horse-shaRK) mug for $50 to bring home as a souvenir. We would definitely return again when in the area.

Finding Hidden Gems: Art District Brewing in Little Tokyo, LA…read more One of my favorite rituals when traveling is hunting down the best local breweries -- and Los Angeles did not disappoint. Tucked away in the vibrant heart of Little Tokyo, Art District Brewing instantly caught my attention. The atmosphere alone made it worth the visit, with that perfect blend of industrial cool and neighborhood charm that only LA seems to pull off. The tap selection was impressive -- thoughtfully curated and clearly crafted with intention. But honestly? The food is what stole the show. I always love leaning on a server's recommendations, and this time it paid off beautifully. The chicken tenders arrived golden, perfectly crispy on the outside, and impossibly juicy within. These weren't your average bar bites -- they were the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-conversation just to appreciate the moment. Whether you're a craft beer obsessive or simply someone who appreciates great food in a great setting, Art District Brewing belongs on your LA itinerary. Next time you find yourself wandering Little Tokyo, do yourself a favor and walk through those doors. You can thank me later.
