we went to this place for the first time and loved it!! the flavors were super bold and it was very tasty!! only thing i would say, and maybe this is on us, but i LOVE spicy foods and the medium was too spicy for me on the tikka masala! the medium was fine on everyone else's but wow mine was very hot so maybe just get the mild to be safe unless you can handle your tastebuds being burned haha! we have a gluten free member of our party and they could eat everything here other than the naan bread! so great gluten free option!! fun little place, definitely will be back! read more

The food is tasty, above average Indian fare. A place to come back to. There's a broad selection of dishes, not just the standards. Service is congenial. Lamb madras I and chicken jal freezing, and mushroom lamb or chicken are examples. The sauces and spices are well executed, with delightful depth and flavor noted. It's all very well prepared, and not "off the shelf." Note that the rice is included, and you get a lot (too much!); it's got a little sautéed vegetables added, a nice touch. Also note the spice levels are adjusted for local tastes, so medium means mild. read more

I have been to about 4 different restaurants in the greater Provo-Salt Lake area trying to find one that has the perfect blend of spice, flavor, and texture. This place is fantastic. I got it medium spicy, and it was the perfect amount of heat that didn't overpower the flavor of the dish. This place is so good that I went back twice in one week. The rice has great flavor that compliments the dish, and the garlic naan is the best out there IMO. It looks like a real dive, but its the real deal. The staff is friendly and attentive. So good old Kohinoor...Where to start. Oh I guess I should give you reasons why it gets three stars. This is based off of a formula I have been working on for years. It is called the hierarchy of Utah Valley Indian restaurants. This place is good but not great. I mean the food is decent but not as flavorful as I would like. The food was okay. But the service was the most disrespectful I have ever experienced. We waited for over thirty minutes to be greeted, even longer to get our food. They messed up our order and then argued with us and accused us of stealing their food. It was honestly one of the worst experiences I have had dining in Orem. The sitting in there is not good especially at the booth it's really tight and awkward. The water tasted chlorinated that's a definite turn-off. I ordered the lamb vindaloo what a joke that was, it came with four pieces of lamb?and big chunky potatoes that were overcooked, the rice wasn't even basmati rice it tasted like it had butter and lots of salt on it it was gross, I complained to the waiter and he took 15% of my order.... the naan bread garlic was probably the best naan bread I've ever had my entire life ...but I don't come to an Indian restaurant pay for me and my friends and get crappy food and the naan bread is the best thing on the menu? Definitely skip this place I don't know what all those huge reviews are about we drove all the way from Salt Lake City with my friends... greatly disappointed.. the lamb vindaloo sauce tasted like Campbell's soup in a can too much vinegar and just not enough flavor very disappointed. read more

Kohinoor just about wraps up my survey of Indian restaurants in the south salt lake / Utah valley area. And the rankings are: 1. India House (Sandy) 2. Gura's Spice House (Herriman) 3. Ganesh Indian Cuisine (American Fork) 4. Kohinoor (Orem) But fourth place is still pretty freaking good. You'll notice that Bombay House didn't even make the list, and BH is a far sight better than nothing. What kept Kohinoor off the winner's platform was a failure to perform. Their food is good. But there are a few things they haven't figured out yet. For example, my wife ordered medium and I ordered hot. The medium had no kick at all; the hot was very spicy. I thought mine was about right, but you see the problem. Portion sizes were huge, as expected, and we brought home plenty of leftovers. Definitely not a bad place to get your masala fix. read more

It's just--it's really, really good. And it's in Orem! I can't get over both being true. The food I've had has not been spicy, which is my definite preference. (Though maybe you could order it that way?) The chicken tikka masala, which I usually avoid at Indian restaurants because it's so mundane, IS UNFORGETTABLE. I always want to lick my plate. And the vegetable samosas are outstanding--flavorful, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. They come with two dipping sauces--a brown and a green one--and I don't know which I like more. By far my favorite Indian place. I've tried many other places, but this has the best naan and chicken tikka masala. The sauce is rich and creamy, and the naan is buttery along with the taste of a tandoor oven. The portions are large enough that my husband and I can split a single tikka masala and both be satisfied. This is perfect if you want a nice meal on a budget. The place is never busy, so you're able to get your food quickly. This is different from Bombay House where you often wait an hour before you get seated on busy nights. Bombay House is comparable with their tikka masala, but their naan is small and doesn't have as much flavor. The lunch menu is also an opportunity to try many different things for a reasonable price. This is the place I pine for whenever I get Indian food elsewhere. read more

Been here for dinner and lunch in the past, food was good. Tried to order Nan at 2:20 PM on a Monday afternoon. I was told rudely by guy answering the phone that they are only open at 5PM. After about ten hours of driving, my compatriot and i were downright famished. We were in the mood for Indian and found this place. We are both vegan and there were ample choices on the menu. The vegetable samosas were top notch. Some of the best vegetable samosas I've ever had and I eat samosas like skittles. The tofu vindaloo was a beautiful shade of crimson and the taste did not disappoint. The coconut Kurma had the flavor of a fresh coconut with delicate spices. Delightful. Admittedly, my experience could be an exception (when the restaurant was having a bad day), but the food was subpar on my visit compared to other Indian restaurants (from the perspective of one who has eaten at numerous Indian restaurants in many states). The food didn't seem fresh, as if it had been left over from the day (or two days) before. Overcooked, and lacking in flavor. The shrimp and yogurt were absolutely gross. The naan was good, though. Price not great, given the lower level of quality. Overall, below average (probably should warrant only two stars), but tolerable. With so many other good restaurant options, I won't be returning. (With a good Indian restaurant in Provo, why would one ever eat here, unless time is of concern -- this restaurant wasn't crowded when I went.) read more

I just finished a meal from Kohinoor and it was definitely passable, particularly in a market like this that frankly doesn't have a lot of competition. I'm in Provo on business, married to a south Indian from Delhi and spent a whole lotta time in India & eating all kinds of Indian food... so forgive my very specific review. I chose Kohinoor because I like the name & because the menu had paneer tikka, which I was craving. The paneer tikka was not bad, but not what I expected. Tandoor items you expect to be served dry-ish with a thicker more paste-like marinade, but this was more like a gravy dish. The flavors were right, though. I was skeptical of the butter chicken (the description and the look of it seemed worryingly busy) but I'm happy to report that the flavor was pretty much spot-on and the cashew was (thankfully) not really noticeable. The only thing I'd say was truly disappointing about the meal was actually the rice, which was not basmati. I don't know if it's an issue of expense or logistics or both, but not even the cheapest desi restaurant in my hometown would serve something else. It just doesn't taste right. Overall, I'd recommend the place to anyone I know looking for Indian food around Provo/Orem, but I'd warn them about the rice thing. read more
