Spicy short rib noodles came with 2.65 oz of meat... pitiful and criminal for a $20 meal

Second visit and just wasn't as impressed with the food this time... was able to try more and different things but realized it might have been better to go with what we had before. Dumplings had a very chewy texture for the outside and weird filling. Wings were our favorite again.. they are that good and awesome sauced with soy garlic. Boba cocktail was awesome - fun way to have a cocktail. My Short Rib Noodle Stir Fry was not as expected... way too over powerful in the gochujang sauce... just a few bites in and my stomach was doing flips (yes I eat and love spicy foods). Had to get a cup of white rice to eat the meat and some of the kinchi to save myself from torture. Kiddo's bulgogi/katsu bowl was ok... kimchi meat was a bit sticky sweet sauced and chicken katsu was cooked well. Same waitress as our first visit and she is great, but only one person making drinks and serving may get interesting if it got busier. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I tried it for the first time in 2021, we specifically went for the boba cocktails but apparently they were under new management & needed a new liquor license. So I recently returned with my friends & sister to give them a try. I was very disappointed that the Richmond happy hours listings are outdated & they do NOT offer any cocktail or food specials anymore during happy hour. They were out of the taro cocktail but it ended up being for the best because I tried my friend's matcha boba cocktails & it really didn't taste like matcha, it also wasn't strong w/alcohol, & the boba itself wasn't very good or sweet enough. It's way over priced, $15 for one glass, so I don't recommend. I ultimately got the creamy limeade which was good. We got an order of the bulgogi fries which were decent but also overpriced. It is 4x cheaper to get an order of plain fries. I tried the corn dog which was decent besides the fact toward the bottom the dough was still raw. They did remake it for me after I brought it to their attention. The service wasn't very good overall though. There weren't many people here but there was only one waitress who was also the bartender. It took ages for the corn dog to come out, which is why it was extra surprising that it wasn't done. One other thing is it's weirdly dark in there, they'd benefit from some more lighting. & also more seating large groups. I was also frustrated that they charged us a 20% included tip, especially because the group wasn't even there the same time or sitting together. read more

I like the dak tori chicken better than the bulgogi because there was more flavor. The bowls are good, but I want to try something else. It's a very casual environment. ( NO STARS.. I'd give the space of an atoms darkness for this ridicule ) Entering the building; I noticed the aroma of spit. Giving chances, not thinking too much into it. (We still sat down. I've come here before and the food was amazing! ) When I sat, the service was pretty slow but decent. Not much to think of, I spoke with my friend and then the food was served. I noticed it tasted funny, but didn't say much because maybe it were my taste buds. When the check were served; she only gave me the customer receipt. Confused, I still gave her my card to run and when I ran it, she said there were no funds ( even after I ran both cards ( she typed them in and everything) Then said "FREE OF CHARGE, I GOT IT". I left, feeling odd afterwards; bot knowing why she would run both my cards when I knew they had funds. Shortly afterwards, my throat grew sore. Davina spit in my food and gave it to me for free! It's been probably over 5 years since I've had J Kogi back in college, it's surprisingly kind of the same but different. It's still comforting and similar tastes but with a few modifications. The bulgogi bowl was delicious with all the veggies and sauces. It stayed hot and warm throughout the entire meal because of the clay pot. The soup was comforting, warm and delicious since it was raining that day. The broth was tasty but not overpowering. A con would be that there isn't a parking lot, which isn't uncommon in Richmond. But there is a street parking. The wait wasn't long at all either for all the food which is a big plus. I'd definitely come back again! read more

YUM. The beef bulgogi was so delicious you NEED to get the bulgogi fries. The bulgogi bowl was also amazing and a large portion full of strong flavors! (I loved the kimchi and pickled onions especially). The kimbap was much more food than I expected, very good! The service was fine, a bit scattered but we were in no rush. The ambiance was good! They got a bar and a flat screen for sports. They serve to give "a little seoul city" style of cooking. Although I've never been there.. Kogi has many typical Korean street foods with a twist. Pork Belly Tteokbokki and Blackened shrimp kim nap...WhAT?!! Yes sirr... I couldn't turn them down. It takes the 20 min to get your food cooked. The blacked shrimp has grilled jumbo shrimp with carrot, spinach, egg. It says it's gluten free and for many vegans they have various options to accommodate mostly everyone's taste. I absolutely loved Kogi! We got takeout paired with some soju we had at home, and it didn't disappoint. We tried the soy garlic Korean chicken wings, haemul scallion pancake, sticky braised short ribs, chicken katsu kimbab, bulgogi ribeye bowl with an egg, and the shiitake mushroom udon noodles. While the ribs were a bit dry for my liking, they had great flavor, and everything else was unbelievably good! I especially loved the scallion pancake and mushroom noodles! It was very busy during lunch on a Saturday. Carlos was a great server but was slammed since mostly all of the seating was filled and he was alone. Service would have been better if the restaurant was adequately staffed. We enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered. The pork belly Tteokbokki was deliciously spicy but had small amounts of rice cake and pork belly. Tempura shrimp kimbap with donkatsu sauce was good as was the spicy tofu jorrim. J Kogi brings Korean food and a bar together. Great concept, well executed. The menu has great Korean food options and I had a local brown ale that went great with my bowl. Thye place is so popular you may not find a seat with the reduced capacity from Covid, takeout is an option. The servers were helpful and attentive. Looking at the top of a bowl and you don't understand just how much there is. It was one of the few Korean places in the area with relatively good ratings, vibes, and indoor seating. It was a solid selection for Korean food, but service was way too slow. Please see the description of the items we got last night. - Kimchi Pancake [GET]: This is a thick, savory and spicy kimchi pancake mixed with onions and scallions. It was fried wonderfully with a burnt and crispy outer layer placed on top of a bed of cabbage, but still got the chewy and doughy texture. I like the fermented kimchi, super sour, tangy, and spicy, which added a great acidity to the pancake. It got a good flour to kimchi ratio too, so overall pretty decent pancake they served. - Dak Tori Chicken Bowl [GET]: This bowl is packed with tasty and deliciousness. The spicy grilled chicken thighs are well-marinated and packed with flavors, but maybe a bit too much seasonings. I had to mix it up with the rice on the bottom really well to balance the saltiness from the chicken. I added a sunny side egg, and it's fried perfectly with a running egg yolk. The toppings were amazing, and they nailed it on their house kimchi, carrots, cucumber, bean sprouts, and wood ear mushrooms. My favorite was probably their kimchi, because it was fresh and sour. There's lots of free street parking nearby. Price: 4/5 - We got the kimchi pancake to share for $9 and they were thick. For entrees, we each got a rice bowl. I got the dak tori chicken rice bowl for $13, and others are around the same price point. The portions are great and huge, and I was definitely full walking out of J KOGI. It was worth it and a steal for the portion size and taste of the food. Service: 3.5/5 - There was only one staff working there, and the service was really slow. The food probably took over 45 minutes to come out after we finished our kimchi pancake. The entire dinner took us over 2 hours, which was not expected. They really need to hire another person to serve the tables. A place like J KOGI should not take this long to dine in, and I was a bit annoyed by it. BLUF: Not your authentic Korean restaurant, but got more of a fusion twist to it. If you are craving for Korean in downtown Richmond, then please come support this local place. The rice bowls here are delicious and huge portion sizes, so I definitely recommend it. Got a low key and very chill vibes. I have been to J Kogi a few times, and overall I would give them a solid 4/5 star rating. However, this last visit was a clear 5. I had lunch with my mom for my birthday, and J Kogi is right around the corner from her office so we popped in here. The chicken katsu bowl!! It was so good. The rice was good, the veggies were plentiful and amazing. Also, the chicken was juicy, crispy, tender, and had so much yum!! Not to mention, we ordered, ate, and paid within 40 minutes. We love that for the lunch hour!! Next time, I'll have to grab a few friends and check J Kogi out for happy hour. I heard they can be a good night life spot. Any thoughts? read more

We had the Tofu Jorrim with the No Spicy No Cry sauce (it's not very spicy) and we thought it was a little mid at first, but by the end we both enjoyed it a lot, to the point where we'd definitely come back for it. Service was slow. We sat ourselves because there was 1 clear table left and the server/bartender was occupied. The place was full the entire hour or so we were there and there was literally 1 server for the entire bar and seating in the restaurant. This was a Tuesday night. This place seems like an americanized korean restaurant. My boyfriend and I ordered two kimbap and it was a total of roughly 16 dollars. For two kimbap, thats sort of expensive in my opinion. I feel like I can order 3 sushi rolls at a sushi restaurant for that price. Although the cost if the kimbap was a bit high, it tasted pretty good. I got the classic kimbap while my boyfriend got the donkatsu kimbap. It was interesting how they have dipping sauces for the kimbap as well! I have never seen that before, and it worked pretty well with the food! I think if I have to choose, I would eat the donkatsu kimbap over the classic one. Why? Because its the same price and theres more of a crunch from the fried pork cutlet. Would I go here again? My S/O and I came here for a date, and it was quiet so we're able to pick where we wanted to sit. The flavors for the dishes were overall there, however I wish the meat to noodle ratio was was better in some of the dishes. I felt like I was eating just majority rice and noodle. read more

I arrived at the Delta hotel Sunday night looking for somewhere good, but not super heavy for dinner. This was like a half mile walk and I think I picked a somewhat sketch route, but inside it had a few folks. I sat at the bar and the bartender helped me pick out what to order - I picked the bulgogi bowl/white rice (all veg, no spicy no cry) + friend egg and gimbap Dak + cheese, like about $20. I'm not a big drinker but some people got this giant half watermelon drink that looked amazing. The bowl and gimbap were great but way too much for me. I didn't really know what to expect from some of the reviews but I thought if you qualified this as "pseudo fusion" Korean it was really great. The bowl alone was plenty, I do wish the rice was crispier on the edges. The gimbap was a large portion (in Korea it's rather different) and I liked it with the wasabi sauce I picked out. I am very disappointed in this place. I should have known it the moment I walked in the door. Besides the soju bottles and Milkis drinks displayed on the bar wall, there is really nothing authentic about the atmosphere here. There weren't even any people of color dining in, and I should have figured that from the reviews. I still gave it a chance, though. Maybe the food would be decent. Maybe there's an actual Korean staff working the kitchen. I ordered the kimchi jjigae stew because, well, you can't really mess up soup, right? Boy was I wrong. Not only was the soup way too salty, it had the consistency of marinara sauce. It was like someone poured way too much of the thick red sauce in there and mixed it with pork belly and a bunch of fat. It was nothing like the kimchi jjigae I'm used to having at actual Korean restaurants. My friend got the KBBQ lettuce wraps, and she even said her chicken tasted burnt and was too salty. It's like the restaurant owners just wanted to make Korean food more "palatable" to white Americans. I get it--that's fine, but don't go calling yourself authentic with the Korean characters on your menu. The service was strange as well. We waited hella long to be asked what we wanted, and then waited even longer to get our food. While waiting, I saw one of the servers give free dumplings to a white couple next to us (even though they already had their food) while my friends and I were starving. (Btw, my friends were black and I'm Asian.) I also saw my server drop rice on the tray and then pick it back up with her bare hands onto my bowl. To make things worse, the bathroom is absolutely disgusting and wasn't even stocked with toilet paper. I ended up just holding it in. I have never given anything lower than 3 stars because I like to support small, local business, but it doesn't feel like this place is run by Koreans at all.
