Stopped in for lunch and had the pulled pork sandwich with a Guinness. It was a quiet afternoon, which gave the place a relaxed, classic pub vibe. The service was friendly and attentive, which made for a pleasant experience. The pulled pork sandwich was decent, especially for $13, though it came without BBQ sauce and wasn't particularly memorable. The Guinness was $8, which felt fair. Overall, the food was good but not something I'd go out of my way for. I've been meaning to check this place out for quite a while and finally had the opportunity. It's very casual and laid back. Menu has lots of options and everything that we ordered was very tasty. Our server was friendly and although she was very busy, she managed to take good care of us. The outdoor patio section allows smoking which seemed odd to me, but I was inside so it didn't bother me. "Once upon a midnight dreary" or perhaps it was earlier, we came upon this humble, melancholy restaurant which drew us in with its old spooky signage. Poe, the man, was a genius with the macabre...his hauntingly eerie style beckons you into a somber place. Poe's Pub, however, while dim, moody, rustic and cozy is full of life and is usually pretty busy! It was not "many and many a year ago" since we've been to this iconic RVA pub! I love the cottagey style white washed brick building with the ominous gabled roof. The first hurdle is the parking... downtown parking is a challenge, so if you are "never more" inclined to find a spot, you can always Uber!! The few spots out front are typically full, and be careful for the traffic on Main St. (I love the added outdoor patio/porch space!) "I've [not] lov'd alone" the delish club sandwiches because they are a customer fav here! These triangles of art are stacked high with the usual suspects: ham, turkey, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato - and I like mine on the marble rye! It's a Poe must! That's a helluva good sandwich! I've gotten it with the crispy onion rings and the fries, which seem to be fresh cut with the skins (even if they're frozen, they are yummy)! Hubby gets the Reuben, which is hefty and a tad on the soggy side, so maybe order the dressing on the side. It's a huge sandwich though and sinfully tasty!! And of course a Guinness is the beverage of choice, dark and chilly like Poe's writing! The menu has clever offerings and any Poe fan will love trying all of the options! The prices are not at all mysterious, and Poe's pocket, while scanty, could even afford the food at this local eatery! This is a spot that I also like to bring out-of-towners since it's also near the Poe Museum, Shockhoe Slip & Bottom, Rocketts Landing, Libby Hill Park, and has a nearby view of the James! Love all the history and mystery surrounding this cool hang out! The food was delicious! We got the hush puppies and pierogies to start. Both were perfectly cooked. I got the Reuben which was super tasty. Plenty of protein and the bread didn't come out soggy. I subbed onion rings instead of fries. My friends got fish tacos, a French dip, and a pulled BBQ sandwich. The fish tacos and French dip got great reviews from my friends. My one friend said the BBQ sandwich was a bit fattier than she would've preferred. Our server was super attentive and had great recommendations. They kept coming by to see how things were and filled up our water whenever it was low. I drink a lot of water so usually places can't keep up. :) The parking is a bit difficult as you have to pull out to a blind curve, but one of the staff actually came out and helped us since someone blocked us in. The inside is sort of "divey" if that makes sense, but it has a unique charm. This worked out in our favor since we came from a workout class and were not dressed for anything fancy. We came around lunchtime on a Sunday and got seated right away. It started to pickup a bit when we finished. You could tell they had a good number of regulars that started to come in. I was dead set on getting the meatloaf but then they told me about the special steak. So lucky for me my wife got the meatloaf for me to try. Could not disappoint either way. Poe's pub has great food. I had the Prime Rib French Dip and it was incredible. The onion rings were very good as well, and battered onion rings are always the best. I like to dip mine in ranch, but their ranch was a little thin. The service was very kind and helpful, but they were rather busy when we went, so it was a little slow at times. They have a great little patio area, but smoking is allowed on the patio, so be aware of that before you make plans. read more

This past week, I ran out of leftovers in my fridge, wasn't keen on the food truck in front of my office, didn't have the time to take a full lunch break/walk to order food, and had a free delivery code from GrubHub. That's where Poe's Pub enteres the picture. I've yet to actually visit for a proper meal -- I hope to eventually make it there -- but here's my review of delivery: I ordered around 12:30 and was told it'd take 30-45 minutes. It ended up being delayed, but I still had my food around 1:30, which isn't terrible and I wasn't ravenous. When a coworker friend walked by my desk, she laughed that I had a full buffet going on: side salad, cheese wedges, club sandwich, fries, and strawberry shortcake. Essentially I ordered a full-course meal for a random weekday. The mozzarella wedges were delectable. Seriously, I'd get those again without a doubt. They didn't taste like they just popped out of a freezer, which is pretty rare to find. The salad was okay, but had mushrooms on it and that's one fungus I just can't get behind. The fries were delicious and well-seasoned. For the club, I said no tomatoes (which they got right) and asked to add mayo (which I thought was a fair substitute for saving them some tomato slices). They did not add mayo, so I took the sandwich home and ate it for dinner instead (fridge mayo to the rescue). The strawberry shortcake was also tasty, and I basically inhaled the whole portion. Also my sweet tooth is a little nuts so *shrug*. All told, would I order from Poe's for delivery again? Probably, but I'm more likely to actually visit for a sit-down experience first. read more

I'll be honest I was expecting more from this place having driven by there several times and seeing that it is always hopping. My overall impression is that it is just average, however, as a vegetarian, I just got a beyond burger and probably don't get to enjoy the meals they do really well. I went there with my whole family on a Friday night. Although parking was a little tricky, the dining area was wide open. Everyone seemed to be fine with the food options, although my dad's taco soup was so salty he couldn't eat it. I was hoping for more of a Poe type experience (like a creepy) but the decor wasn't anything special. I think it is just a place people go to drink and smoke (outside). read more

I'm from the UK, so am pretty familiar with a "proper" pub. This has the vibe to a decent extent. Service was super friendly, fast, warm and just chatty enough. Jalapeno poppers were amazing! Most places they're ok, but honestly these were just superb! Then I have one of the best Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches ever, my wife had the Club which was also great. I really wanted a Reuben sandwich and a friend said they were good here. My Reuben did not disappoint! What a delicious sandwich. I ordered onion rings as my side, it was an up charge of $1.50 as stated on the menu. I didn't think there was anything spectacular about them but they were tasty, crispy and hot. I wish my sandwich had a pickle with it. I just need a pickle if I'm having a Reuben. I was surprised that we weren't offered a drink menu or a happy hour menu when we sat down. No one suggested it to us at all so I don't know if happy hour exists on Tuesday at 4:30. I asked my server if the bartender could make a fruity mocktail of some kind and she repeated it back to me, "a fruity mocktail." So I said yes please, something fizzy. She brought back a Shirley Temple and while it was cold and sweet, it wasn't really a mocktail, it was a kids drink. If you're not an alcohol drinker, I don't think you can expect much in the way of mocktail here, it's more of a beer and straight up drink bar. Sodas are also not free refill and are charged as you would be for an alcoholic beverage. My husband had a pulled pork sandwich and he said it was good. There was a bottle of a chipotle hot sauce that accompanied his dish that he enjoyed. The French Fries they serve are very good if you like a more rustic, skin on fry, rather than a golden fry. You can sub mashed potato's for fries at no additional charge. The 1/2 lb shrimp was outstanding. It's something I get when I go to New Orleans, often. And I thought I'd be taking my chances ordering crack and peel shrimp on a Tuesday afternoon but it did not let me down. Peel and eat shrimp are my favorite way to eat shrimp and Poe's Pub knocked it out of the park. Yum yum. Also, Old Bay Seasoning. Yum! I really like this place and will definitely be back! read more

If you are ever in Richmond, I suggest stopping by this place in Shockoe bottom. If you are into Edgar Allen Poe, you can visit his museum and then walk a few blocks to this restaurant. My favorite entrée to get from this restaurant is the practically famous bacon, wrapped meatloaf. It reminds me of a good home style meal My parents used to make when I was just a child. I have to warn you all though parking is tight. That is why I suggest walking. The restaurant has a parking lot but only about 7 to 8 cars can fit. I used to love this place, but they have raised their prices drastically, give smaller portions, and gave us packets of ranch instead of homemade ranch.
