So, I've been waiting for the right words to review this place because it is so bad that it's actually interesting. Anywho, it was a rainy day, and I just got done moving some boxes into my new house with my 3 year old daughter. All I want in the world is kimchi jjigae. Easy peasy, all 19 places I've had it, it's delicious, so I figure, there is no possible way they can fuck this up. Well...
A new server (I'm assuming he's new because he looks like he just stepped in there three hours ago for the first time ever, whatever, that's cool, I've been new too, so no biggie) seats us, brings us water, we wait like 15 minutes for dudeman to come back and take our order. After waiting patiently, I ask if they have any hot tea. Five minutes later, I shit you not this kid wearing an outfit more expensive than my wedding ring brings out a box of at least 20 different teas. I choose chai, he brings it out and leaves. I finally flag him down a couple minutes later and ask for some cream and sugar. He comes out five minutes later and tells me they have no cream and the only sweetener they have is honey. I think, the restaurant must be new, they clearly haven't thought this one through, whatever, it's cool.
Then after being there about 40 minutes our food comes out. I AM PUMPED. My daughter gets her japchae with bulgogi which is her favorite, and I get my kimchi jjigae, my favorite. Except, what they served me was not kimchi jjigae. It was the most watered down tasteless, skimp kimchi water I've ever had. I AM DESTROYED. Like, idk if the ajumma funding the joint didn't want to give away the real recipe or what but THAT was not kimchi jjigae.
Let me tell you what kimchi jjigae should be. It comes out boiling in the stone bowl. This places was not it. It is cram-packed with kimchi, big ass pieces of tofu, pork, and rice cake. This had the sad, decimated remains of whatever was left in the bottom of the kimchi bucket, the tiniest pieces of tofu if you were fortunate enough to find them, and honestly, I don't think I saw one piece of pork let alone rice cake. Real kimchi jjigae has a powerful hearty flavor, spicy and salty, like it was invented by an old lady whose lost most sense of taste due to old age. It's good. It's comforting. It's amazing. And I can't believe they fucked this up.
Let me preface my next response with this: I have NEVER sent a dish back in my life, until this moment. I was super gracious, I worked in restaurants, I get that mistakes happen. So, the lady asked me why, I told her most of what I told you, with very reserved and filtered language. She then asked what I'd like instead, so I got some braised pork, took another 15 minutes, it was aight (my braised pork is better tbh).
We pick up the table and make sure it's not wrecked (remember there's a 3 year old involved). I go to pay the check, and she charged me for the pork, which I think is insane, considering had they not completely butchered *checks notes* SOUP, then we'd be peachy. So, I go up there and I'm like, hey, I can't possibly pay for this, the soup was messed up, and then I had to wait for an entire new meal to be made. Lady said, well let me ask my manager, I'm like, awesome: she comes out and says, we can only offer a discount, and very calmly I ask, well, can I talk to them? She doesn't bring them out, but instead guilt trips me and says, I'll just pay for it. I've never heard of such a thing, of all the restaurants I've worked at, having an employee pay for a meal is... bizarre. But I call the bluff, and tip as much as she would have allegedly paid ($15) on a $17 tab.
That's it. That's the review. I honestly can't believe they messed up kimchi jjigae, and I will be having nightmares of the lack of seasoning used for decades to come. read more
