When I mentioned that were ready to order our meals as well, she replied that she's only taking drink orders for now. Immediately after she took our drink orders, she asked what we'd like to eat before getting our drinks. A better response should have been...Absolutely, I can take your food order now as well. Drinks aren't listed on the menu and when we were given options details weren't shared: pricing, refills included or not, etc. We ordered fries for my 2 year old cousin, and they arrived on a bowl that had strawberry stains on the inside and outside. After our meal, we cleared our own table and piled our dishes in the middle until Tae (very nice young man) came by to assist. This place is still fairly new but already pretty popular. My foodie friend forwarded me the page one day and from the pictures alone, we just knew it was a place we had to check out. Kitchen Cray is located in an office building and we were glad to see there was plenty of parking. On arrival we noticed the restaurant is a little small but nicely decorated and very clean. The first thing i noticed was that the chefs seemed to pretty organized and everyone was constantly moving and working together. But despite that, service was pretty slow. I heard that it tends to get busy pretty early on, but we were lucky enough to make it well before the rush but had to wait a long time to get our food. Our waiter did try to keep us updated from time to time. Once we got our food, we were not disappointed. All the dishes looked savory and indulgent with an abundance of rich, flavorful ingredients. Cream, sauce and butter didn't look to be in short supply. Thankfully the food tasted as good as it looked. All in all, we would definitely return to try more of their menu but hopefully they are able to work out the kinks for a faster service. read more

My friend and I traveled from out of state but later realized we wouldn't be able to dine in due to COVID-19. No biggie though. That is to be expected considering our new normal. The process of ordering online and picking up at the restaurant was seamless as I received a text regarding the status of my order and went in to grab the precious cargo. I ordered the "Loaded Lobster" which consisted of a fried lobster tail with salmon & shrimp, and crab on a bed of mashed potatoes. The food was absolutely delicious and I won't hesitate to order again should I find myself in the DMV area. It's totally worth the trip, especially if you're local. read more

This was my first time going to KitchenCray Cafe and I have to admit I was not impressed. I was expecting to see the monstrous dishes that they advertise on Instagram and was rather disappointed to see such a limited menu. Typically when you tell the waiter that it is your first time at their establishment, they are quick to point out the restaurant's best dishes. Instead to my disappointment, the waiter said "Oh that's nice what would you like to drink?" I looked over the menu and selected the Shrimp and Grits as my meal of choice. I thought I was going to get something similar to what I had seen on Instagram, but instead it was rather underwhelming. The menu stated it would be Jumbo Prawns, but instead they were Medium to Large shrimp with burnt Chicken sausage. I did not complain as I was out with a friend and former colleague who happened to be paying and I didn't want to ruin the experience, but I don't think I will return again in the future. Some positive takeaways: They offer ample table spacing for COVID-19 They use plastic silverware They offer paper to-go containers They do not accept cash They check your temperature upon entry for COVID-19 The food has flavor, just not what is advertised, nor what everyone else has posted. Yep I get it. I understand the hype. I really like this spot and its vibe. When me and my girl decided to get together for a long overdue lunch date I was so glad she was also anxious to try Kitchen Cray. When I walked in I could smell the deliciousness emanating from the kitchen. We purposely came early to beat the rush and I'm so glad we did as it did get very busy as the noon hour approached. I opted for the chicken biscuits with turkey sausage gravy. It comes with a side of breakfast hash (potatoes to feed my carb addiction). My girl got the seafood omelette which was generously topped with crab and shrimp. Our food was personally delivered with a smile by Chef JoJo. Nice touch! While Carol cleaned her plate, I tried but got full. But trust me the leftovers were just as good the next day. Coerced into dessert I had originally planned to get rum cake to go but once the server said ice cream I quickly changed course, made room in my tummy and had it here. No problem finishing that off. I see the vision coming together at Kitchen Cray Cafe and I hope it's a success in the long run. Apparently, business is booming because it was a steady flow of customers when I visited, both dinning in and picking up their to-go orders. This newly opened Black owned restaurant by, Owner and Master Chef James Robinson, is serving up 5 star quality dishes, for average Joe's to afford. Located on the 1st level of an office building off of Route 450 in Lanham, this cafe is open for breakfast, brunch, and lunch, (9am -3pm daily). I decided to meet a friend for breakfast on a random Monday that wasn't too busy when we walked in, but started to pick-up as our stay grew longer. The cafe is clearly marked on the outside of the building, so I had no trouble finding it. We were greeted by some very friendly and eager employees who showed us to our table. The inside is rather snug and when the restaurant became full, I kind of felt like we were sitting on top of one another. People were squeezing through the walkways and bumping into chairs to take their seat. Our server was basically non-existent after she took our order and brought us our food. I noticed that seemed to be the case with a few other tables because they had to flag down other servers who weren't theirs, to get the attention of their actual server to request their check. I ordered the Chicken Biscuit with Sausage Gravy and my friend ordered the Kitchen Cray Showtime Omelette. Both came with potato hash and were very visually appetizing. My friend loved her omelette. I tasted my food and it had a really great flavor and the chicken was cooked well and the biscuit was nice and fluffy, but the gravy was too salty for my liking. I didn't make a big fuss over it, and just ate it. I typically don't like sweet potatoes, but the way they were cooked in the hash were really delicious. All and all, we had a pretty good visit, but it's room for improvement. I saw several positives and I saw several things that could be improved upon. It's a new restaurant and I'm sure they're working out the quirks. The food really does speak for itself, it was really delicious. Visited this spot on a Sunday for brunch. We arrived around 2:20 PM and there was no wait so we were sad immediately after the hostess took our temperature and gave us hand sanitizer. They have indoor and outdoor seating we chose to sit indoors. There was a DJ blasting hip-hop music and it was such a cute vibe. I believe because of Covid the menu is condensed. However I got the blackened salmon with grits and spinach. And my boyfriend got French toast and chicken. All the food was delicious and very flavorful. The French toast with all the different sauces taste so good. The grits were yummy. And the salmon was cooked well. The location is in an office building on the corner of it so it can be hard to find if you're coming off the highway. This is an updated review. I still give KitchenCray Cafe 5 stars. On this visit, I ordered the Seafood Salmon. It is Salmon topped with jumbo lump crab and lobster claw meat over the customer's choice of garlic mashed potatoes or cheddar grits and spinach topped with a Cajun cream sauce. I got my Salmon with the cheddar grits, because I am a grits girl and I love cheese grits so much. This dish is divine. It's the perfect marriage of texture and taste with seasoning infused in every bite. Safety is top concern at Kitchencray. There is one entrance to the patio area. The hostess checks each customer's temperature before allowing them in. They also give each customer a mandatory squirt of hand sanitizer. All of the menus are disposable. Drinks are served in to-go cups with lids. Plastic wrapped to-go eating utensils are also used. This is all a great way to maintain cleanliness during the pandemic. All staff, including hosts, servers, owners, and Chef wore masks. They even have Kitchencray branded masks. All servers have portable devices to take credit card payments at each table. Let's start with the peach cobbler....it blew me away. The peach cobbler is everything y'all, you just have to try it!! Also, it's not a small serving desert, which I can't stand about some restaurants. The servings of deserts is a good portion. I came here for the pop up brunch. Paid 70 bucks for two, came with appetizer, entree, and desert. Made a reservation for 1, came at 1:10, everything was so organized, we got sat immediately! For the appetizer, the salmon cakes are so so tasty! I really enjoyed them! The sauce that comes on the side is also really good! My boyfriend got the wings, now I'm a fan of breaded wings, so of course if they were breaded I'd be all over them, but they aren't, but the sauce is really good. For the entree, I got the fried fish and grits, mannnn this was good. I loved the grits so much. My boyfriend got the french toast, not gonna lie, I was jealous because the french toast was amazinggggg. Also, fun fact, the chef doesn't dip the bread in eggs!! This caught me off guard, I need his recipe and the scrambled eggs on the side, seasoned and yummy. Now of course I talked about my peach cobbler, up there, but I'll say it again, get the peach cobbler. The rum cake is also good! Another thing I loved about this place is that they had a 15 year old working, and I mean he was serious about his work. Getting plates to the table, taking photos of guests, being so attentive. It was really great to see that! The only thing that bothered me is the times of when the restaurant is open. I don't know if this will change or not, but I really wanted to try the lobster Mac and cheese, and other amazing items on the regular menu, but those are only available Monday through Friday, 9am -3PM, and not available during the brunch on Sunday. I've been stalking *ahem... cough, cough* I mean, following Chef JR Robinson, SU & his team on IG (mrcheffito, kitchencraycafe, kitchencrayempire) for over a year. I would make a mental note to attend their DC brunches and then decide I was too lazy to get out of bed, and not go. I'd just drool over the IG pictures and regret being so lazy. When they opened their restaurant in Lanham, I muscled up the motivation to do the drive, bought a ticket and went. I went to the Menu Release AND Grand Opening parties. First, his team is so friendly, works together like a well oiled machine and responsive to feedback. I also love how they did about a month long soft opening of multiple private events to work out all the kinks and adjust to all feedback given at the private events they held. This is a good sign of someone who is willing to go slow to achieve the highest success and takes pride in his work. Due to attending both of the private events, I can say that I've had the opportunity to sample most of what is offered on the menu. The best I can describe his fare is: gourmet comfort food presented to you in a fancy pants way. I wish I could tell you what I enjoyed more: The grilled shrimp, the lamp chops, the shrimp & grits, the oxtail, the lobster Mac, the short ribs... I can't. I liked EVERYTHING! It's worth the drive and the calories. Waiiiit.... I lie. I do have a favorite: The crabcake. Errrrmawwwgawwwd, the crabcake and that lil salad that accompanied it was AMAZING. Ahhh-maze-ing! I don't even know what that lil salad was... a slaw? All I know is I like it, I love it, I want more of it!!! I still have yet to attend a brunch event, but now that they are officially open, I will. After finally getting seated me and my wife ordered our entrees and drinks immediately. After receiving my mango lemonade which was really good, I didn't see my waitress for 30 minutes. She briefly returned to refill my lemonade. When I asked for updates, It took another 15 minutes for the foo to finally come. I ordered the Chicken and French Toast w/ a side of eggs. The French toast had potential but was turned into a soggy bread because of the chicken on top . And the chicken by the looks and taste had to be cooked in old grease. I mean I still ate it but did not live up to the experience I was hoping as an avid French toast eater. Kitchen Cray Cafe is located Lanham, MD, conveniently placed near highway route 95, and the BW Parkway. The restaurant is clean, the staff is very nice, and there's something about being able to purchase a fine dining meal, in an upscale cafe setting that just appeals to me. The restaurant is organized, Chef JR is very friendly, and our food came out to us in a timely fashion. I ordered the Jerk Chicken Rasta Pasta, sweet and spicy wings, and my co-worker ordered the grilled salmon, from the power menu w/ spinach and a sweet potato. Our meals were delicious. The chicken in my pasta dish was perfectly seasoned and tender and the cream sauce on the pasta was nothing short of amazing. The grilled salmon was very good(clearly, I tried some), and cooked perfectly. I'm usually hesitant to order salmon because everyone doesn't do it right, and more often than not, it ends up dry. Not today. Not at Kitchen Cray Cafe. If you're in the mood for high quality dishes, a comfortable, vibrant setting, and a very personable executive chef, I highly recommend this restaurant. Subpar at best. I wanted to check out Kitchen Cray after seeing all the meals the chef prepared for Wale. Maybe my expectations were too high or perhaps Wale's meals are far better since their homies, but I wasn't impressed. First they have very limited drink options which sucks but then I asked for lemon with my water and they said they only have lemon for the kitchen. Huh, what? So customers can't have lemon? My friend & I both had the lobster Mac n cheese. It looked better than it tasted. Let me say it didn't taste bad but it wasn't great. It was pretty much mac n cheese with a fried lobster tail on top. A little lobster mixed in would have been more appealing. Also the Mac was a little bland. Oh and they only have butter knives so cutting lobster was hard. Would be nice to have steak knives. We wanted dessert and the pre-opening menu only had one choice, rum cake. It was somewhat full of rum but somehow still bland. I will say the service was okay. I attended the soft opening of Kitchen Cray cafe back in May, my overall experience was amazing, the food was fresh and the service was great. I loved watching Chef JR create magic in the kitchen. It is an honor to support a black owned business, Kitchen Cray breaks the stereotype we are conditioned to believe which is black owned businesses are sub par. I enjoyed the details in the restaurant when it came down to the menu presented on a CD and the China used to plate all the dishes. The service was fast and friendly. We were provided with new silverware with each course during the soft opening. The servers did an excellent job of "pre-bussing" (restaurant terminology) plates and used napkins. My highlights from the 5-course tasting were the oxtail, shrimp and grits, crab cake and the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. The oxtail completely fell off the the bone, the spices used on the meat were very bold and flavorful. The crab cake was very good, made with mostly lump crab and little filler, topped with crab cake sauce. The shrimp and grits are a must, they are perfect because it is made with a cajun turkey sausage in stead of the typical pork sausage. The Peach cobbler, like I cry as I write this review, it was out of this world! The peaches used in this dish were fresh and flavorful, the vanilla ice cream was a perfect finish to complete this dish. I am so mad..... I've been wanting to try this place forever, and finally... on a Saturday. Like i don't know if I should blame it on what I chose, or the maybe because it was a Saturday, and maybe they have better options during the week? Possibly. I continue to find 5-star worthy restaurants and KitchenCray is no different. Heads-up about the scene: the cafe is in an office park and is in fact, in an office building (envision a doctor's office with a food cafe on the ground floor). We found KitchenCray on Instagram and the pics of the food looked amazing. Interestingly, there were no pics - that I saw - of the actual cafe and/or its exterior. These omissions take nothing away from the food but when we arrived, we were unsure that we were at the right place. Anyway, we hit Cray on a Saturday when they offer a preset menu. This definitely works in their favor, as the food came out fast (since the menu is limited). Our table ordered Chicken & French Toast and an omelet with hash...we also had mimosas - mango and strawberry. The food was drool worthy! The chicken was SO moist, seasoned and on point! We only added hot sauce (on the table already because, cmon, it's soul food). The mimosas went down fast - so fast that the champagne led to a crucial headache but that's just me. In addition to the food, the vibe is just everything! A live DJ was spinning 90's-00 hits; we were singing and rapping and eating...if they offered bottomless mimosas, I would still be there singing, rapping and eating! The TV was tuned into Fresh Prince...it couldn't get any better for a chill spot. We are saddened, but understand, that the full menu is only available Mon-Fri but best believe we will return (maybe skip work one day!) to try all KitchenCray has to offer!! ps. Love! Love! Love this place. I heard nothing but good things about Kitchen Cray Café, so I was excited when the opportunity presented itself for me to try their Saturday brunch. I put my name on the list and the hostess said the wait was about 30-45 minutes with a text alert to my phone when my table was ready. There were so many people waiting around, so I decided to wait in my car until I got the text. Fast forward thirty five minutes and I get my text! I'm in this bish! I couldn't help but shimmy while walking to my table because the DJ was jamming! It was definitely a vibe. I get seated and notice the menu is quite limited but that did not bother me. I go for the Chef's Special because.... why not! I want to see what the hype is about so I figured that was my best bet. My food arrives and I think I may have cried actual tears of joy. The chef's special on this particular day was some seafood dish with mashed potatoes. It was beautiful, and it tasted better than it looked. I was twerking in my seat and eating fried lobster tail. I have been hearing such amazing things about kitchen Cray from my friends and family so I was excited when my little brother came in town so we could do brunch there. It is located in a business shopping center in Lanham Maryland and from the outside you wouldn't know that there was a restaurant located inside but that wasn't a big deal. From the parking lot I could tell that there was going to be a wait. We arrived around 1 PM on a Saturday afternoon and the wait was about 35 minutes for a party of two. They had a decent waitlist system. Once you check in, you give the host your cell phone number and you can track the status of your place in line. I thought it was pretty cool, it allowed me to sit in my car and actually run an errand while waiting because I could track my place in line. When we were called to be seated we noticed a jam packed house of smiling faces, a DJ, and very friendly wait staff that were more than willing to help us. Can't remember our waitresses name but she had Locs and she was awesome. As a proud 80's baby, I loved that they had a dj that played old school hip hop and r&b. It really set the vibe. Throughout our dining experience, we were consistently asked whether or not our food was OK, our table was consistently cleared of old dishes, our water glasses were refilled often and the service was overall really good. Now let's get to this food! We started off with an order of the mambo wings which were well seasoned flavor before and had just the right amount of sauce on them. We also split an order of the seafood jambalaya and the chicken and French toast. The chicken breast on the French toast was delicious, lightly breaded and fried to perfection. The French toast was well prepared and glazed in this delish Carmel sauce and topped with berries. It was a taste sensation. The jambalaya was really good. It was well presented but super pricey. But not too expensive considering that you got a lobster tail, large shrimp, turkey sausage and the works. It came out piping hot and while it could use a little bit of hot sauce, everything was prepared deliciously. I heard so much about KitchenCray that I had to check it out. First impression I was surprised of the location in a office building, but they have plenty of parking spots. There was a DJ playing some great music something that is lacking in a lot of bar/restaurants so I was happy about that. I ordered lamb chops with mashed potatoes and mambo sauce wings. The lamb chops were over cooked and not pleasing to taste. I was so disappointed too because I like lamb chops. The mashed potatoes was ok. The wings were good. My overall experience here was ok. Not impressed by the lamb chops but I probably would come back again and try something else. read more

Great food even better people. The owner walked in and had a whole conversation with us before our food arrived. The ambiance was amazing as well. Did I forget to mentioned they're Black Owned which means a lot to me. That means my money is supporting our black families; sending our kids to college, putting food on our tables, and clothes on our back. read more

FOOD: "stuffed Salmon" it was soooooo good! Everyone in the group ordered the same and everyone was satisfied. I also orders mango lemonade. I could've done without. I prefer tart lemonade and this was very sweet. PRICE: The price was amazing for seafood. It was obviously fresh. The rest of the menu was also reasonably price and the fact that is was so good And so much food, Is be ok with paying more. SERVICE: HORRIBLE!! The wait was an hours. We were seated 16 mins before a drink order was taken. Another hour before the food was serviced. The young lady was not the best. Not as attentive as one would expect. AMBIANCE: Ehhhh. It was suppose to have a day party vibe. The music/DJ was soooooo bomb. It was def a vibe. BUT the rest of the staff played so much it was annoying and distracting. They socialized with each other so much it's caused them to neglect their tables. I mean they laughing, playing, dancing,'oh the phone and playing with kids. (because of the DJ) Would I go back? You know something I love? Brunch!! What's better than brunch??... Brunch offerings aaaaallll daaaaayyy looonnngg, eeeevvveerrryydaay. Not just on Saturday and Sunday like the side chick meal of the week, but on aaaallll the days like it should be. With soooo many delicious seeming items to choose from, i needed to be very strategic with my meal selection during my Wednesday, late afternoon visit... I used the method that helps me narrow down most significant decisions in life to decide what to eat. Eeny, meeny, miny, moe... with the Lobster Mac & Cheese, Ky will go! If the lobster Mac was any indication of how delicious everything else on their menu is, I can't wait to go back to try lots more things!!! It was cooked just perfect, super decadent and rich in flavor, and served promptly and piping hot. The portion size was of good value for the price point and despite scarfing it down like I hadn't eaten in weeks, LOL... I still had leftovers to take home. Much to my surprise and delight, the lobster Mac & cheese was just as delicious reheated. The hostess and our server were both very pleasant, attentive, and really helpful with accommodating my nephew's car seat on a high chair. Kitchen Cray is definitely a vibe. I've only been on Sundays when there is a DJ. The music is never too loud though. I like that the line to be seated is through Yelp and you can see how long the wait is and where you are in line. You can add yourself to the line prior to your arrival. This is a great tool to have for such a popular place. The food is amazing. You don't even need syrup for the french toast! There's always a variety of mimosas flavors to choose from and the mimosas are always super yummy! Love this place. read more

In visiting this location for brunch today, we had a very good experience!! There was a wait, but we were able to be seated at the bar. The bartender, Leah, was so good to us and very nice! My first visit and it wont be my last. The location is in an office park so first impression was not the best but I thought maybe it's like those pop up bars. There were people waiting outside in the balmy 45 degrees so that's a good start. Went in and placed name on list. Loved the fact they used technology to take my name and # in party for notifications. Told there was a 45min wait and because I was going to my phone I felt secure enough to venture over to the Target 0.2 miles away for 30mins. Came back, there were even more people waiting. I got scared for a sec but we were seated10 mins later. Brownie points! The atmosphere for a Saturday Brunch was like a pre-party for the party...get you in the mood. The menu was limited but understandably because every plate that passed was flawless and perfectly executed. We had the crab topped tater tots, short ribs and wings. I wish my stomach was bigger because if I could've I would've eaten everything and licked my plate. 2x!!! Only word that can truly reflect my opinion on the how terrific and delicious everything was is: DAAAAAMMMN! Our server was great, the DJ was great, the food was Fkng AWESOME, the aioli sauce was , the mimosa pitcher was like a date who is a 5 but you are horny so you do it, and the other diners were cool and chill AF.
