I am definitely a fan of this place! A member of our meetup asked me to come by and check out this restaurant so the next day I figured it couldn't help to see what they were about. Well, this took me about 2 different visits to figure that out due to the diversity of the menu so here is my take: APPETIZERS! The salmon cuppracio-somethingeranother (butchering the name - see photo) is a great appetizer to have! The salmon is done sashimi style but coated in a sweet glaze I couldn't figure out. Combined with the cranberries and avocado gave it an amazing taste. The cranberries brought that tangy and sweet sensation and went well with the soft texture of the salmon. All in the crunchy fresh onions and it all goes very well together! The Fried Shrimp Fried shrimp came out a bit different then I expected since I was expecting just your typical fried shrimp. These were straightened, battered and fried which is basically a tempura-style cooking shrimp. They came out with a tempura sauce I believe 5 pieces which are a good amount for the price your paying for it. BRUSSELS SPROUTS AND POTATOES This was something totally unique to me. When it first came out I was thinking "someone overcooked this totally" because the dish is darker but it wasn't overcooked and tasted great. If your not careful you can blind eat this until its gone and get full before your entree. It comes with a mixture of charred brussels sprouts and fried potatoes. Its covered in a glaze giving the overall dish a hint of sweetness. Combining that with the grilled sprouts and the crispy potatoes, you're getting a balanced flavor so it works well. NOW TO THE ENTREES POKE BOWL When I first came here I wanted to just get something light since i'm trying to cut back on carbs and such so I got the mixed poke bowl. Unlike Poke Bar, you cant really customize this or choose each ingredient but it is made well balanced in my opinion. The top was covered in salmon, tuna, seaweed salad, corn, etc etc. It was basically a mix of crunchy and soft ingredients over warm sushi rice. The ONLY ISSUE I had was the lettuce in between the top and the bottom. To me, it threw off the balance of flavor because your getting a good mix at the top and the rice at the bottom - throwing in cold lettuce in between gives me a bit of a surprise so getting this dish again, I would probably ask no lettuce. IF you're a lettuce enthusiast, its all you. FRIED CHICKEN The owner and chef here wanted to build a place that was more of a fusion menu than one theme (thank God for that). That said you have hot clay pot dishes, sushi, fried chicken, salads, poke bowls, etc. I didnt try it all but I did return to try the fried chicken and the regular was very unique. To me, it was done almost like a Chick Fil La style because I can definitely taste the brown sugar, pepper, and salt in the batter. It comes with 2 barbeque sauces but I didn't need them - the flavor was good enough. the other was sauced I believe in a sweet soy base and also didn't need much help. I loved it because it wasn't overly sweet and just balanced well (balance is the word of the day it seems). KETO-FRIENDLY SUSHI? There is sushi here that's riceless wrapped sushi. It used rice paper to wrap the ingredients instead of sushi rice so more carb friendly. I loved this I tried it in Salmon and Tuna both are great. I would say, before you give it a soy sauce baptism - try them first. There is a sauce in the middle that works well by itself. Overall I love this place, the atmosphere is very homely and the workers and management are very friendly. They constantly filled my green tea and kept getting me more even when I asked them not to until I left (in which case I got my last refill handed to me in a to-go cup). First of all it's pricey $15 and above. We ordered 2 items grilled shrimp hot bowl and veggie and tofu hot bowl. A big bowl of sticky rice with scattered shrimp and onion with a small scoop of salad on the side , again another big bowl of sticky rice with scattered zucchini and fried tofu ( the deep fried tofu was delicious though). I am afraid anyone wants to stuff themselves with so much rice for a meal. I am an Asian and we don't eat so much rice at one go without any curry or sides. The lady who takes the order is super fussy and making faces when asked for an extra bowl of tofu or veggies. They aren't flexible at all. I was even willing to pay up a small price for the extras. I have seen the high reviews, and I'm bowl obsessed, so I decided to check this place out with my friend and daughter. The parking lot is kind of tough, with small spaces, and big crowds with Starbucks there in the complex as well. The place is cute and cozy, but the chairs are hard and not good for sitting too long. Service was really good, and the waitress made sure our glasses were never empty. They serve fresh miso soup, complimentary. That worked out perfect, because my daughter loves miso soup. I ordered the salmon bowl, which comes with avocado, masago, pickled onion and radish, cucumbers, and seaweed. These are the standards for this bowl, and you can't really change it unless you want something omitted. The salmon was pretty fresh. I asked for spicy mayo, and they have a little squeeze bottle they brought to the table, which was nice so I could add as much as I wanted. Highlight: This is a new poke place that opened in place that Boxete used to be. It's a nice cozy charming joint that makes you feel like you're at the neighbors warm home for dinner/lunch. The book shelf in the back with poke and cook books makes you feel super relaxed and home. I love Poke and have had it in many places, and this place is unique in that it has a strong Korean feel for the poke dish. Lovely and colorful dishes with pinks, yellows, greens, and oranges- definitely very pleasing to the eye. Your choices include fish, bulgolgi, and korean style food. I wish they put more ingredients, but such is when you have customized menu options rather than create your own. I highly recommend Bulgogi on North Decatur near Emory University for their unique make your own bowl, if you have the chance. However, if you want a Korean styled poke dish, then this is your go to place. My friend and I ordered the combination fish and the bulgolgi for comparison. Both had their own unique flavor strongly due to the meats themselves. Both had the same toppings. The nice verdant green is seaweed sad, yellow appears to be korean daikon pickled radish, the bright pink looks to be another radish, white is from the good sushi rice, and the rest of the colors come from what you ordered. Bc of the high radish and seaweed salad content, it tasted very Korean based. Jiyoung is the charming and sweet chef who worked at an upscale restaurant and house makes the sauces. Try it on the side before you add it to your bulgolgi dish. I thought the beef was already adequately flavored- I wished the beef pieces were larger- it felt a little hamburger ground beef like rather than bulgolgi like which usually comes in ribbons rather than small pebbles, but the flavor was still good. Wished the pieces were juicier or larger to showcase the tenderness of bulgolgi for those who have never had much korean food! The combination fish was also pretty good. I thought they could have been a tad more generous with the fish since my dish was mostly radish and seaweed and I had to make sure each bite had 1 piece of fish in order to fully appreciate the dish. Otherwise, I enjoyed the umami of the salmon, mixed with the mild salt of ocean fish, light spice, and tang of the poke sauce. There is unlimited miso soup that is poured from a pitcher into your little soup bowl. The staff is polite and warm and friendly. Jiyoung herself even goes around and greets you! This is the only poke place for a good 5 mile radius unless you go towards Pleasant Hill but even then, I don't recall any poke places. The next best ones are down in Buford, Emory, Atlanta and beyond. There is one in Buford, and if you want the original Sashimi salad found in the Assi food court for 7.99$ or at the H mart food court, you can try that, but the ambiance and food here is lovely for those who want a poke fix. read more
