When I had a few extra days off from work, I decided to do a staycation in the area, and spent an afternoon sitting and enjoying their other offerings. I love their Ave U location but this one is closer to me so stopped by to get some work done. I ordered an iced green tea and meat Burek which they made to order. It comes with a dill garlic yogurt sauce and olives on the side. The Burek was so hot I almost burned my mouth... just how I like it. Crispy fresh bread filled with savory meat. I came in with my son to order him a birthday cake since I had a positive experience in the past with my own birthday cake. We picked a chocolate with fruit cake and asked to make it blue because it was a Sonic themed party. When I came to pick up the cake it was not ready on time. Once I got it it was the wrong color so I asked to remake it for early morning pick up the day of my party I also asked for a discount which they did not provide because they told me they already discounted because I am a previous customer. When we came back the cake was the right color but once we touched it to decorate it the blue instantly started to come off and stained my hands and my husbands which food coloring should not do. Several parents expressed their concern so when we cut the cake we tried to avoid the blue but some kids said they want it It ended up staining hands, lips, tongs. Which is not ok! It took me 3 days to get the coloring off my hands. I went back to ask for my money back and to complain and they said that it's normal and that they will not give me my money back because the cake was eaten. Unfortunately, I couldn't drive up to the store to see the entire assortment of cakes, so l discussed my order with the store salesperson (it was supposed to be a "chocolate cake with chocolate filling" and they told me that everything would be done right and my order would be delivered. Whenever I have a nack for sweets I always get one of their cake/pie slices or one baklava piece to crave my sweet tooth. Those this time i got 2. In my search to find a cafe that would be open before 8am on a weekend to meet up with a friend, I found the Safir Bakery on yelp. I can't believe I just discovered this place. Plenty of seating, especially this early on a weekend. Refer to my pics, specifically the one that has this as a caption and order it: "I don't know what this is called but get the one on the right!" Its got the perfect amount of sweet to flaky dough to nuts ratio. This variation allows the syrup to hit every layer. Definitely pair with a cup of unsweetened coffee or tea. Everything is perfect in this bakery EXCEPT their choice of music which is always and all day long upbeat and gives me a headache every single time. It just doesn't go with the nice place this cafe is. I suggested that they choose a softer, more soothing and calmer type of music to create a nicer ambience that matches the place, like Lite FM kind of music, but they totally ignored it. When I come to this cafe, I usually want to enjoy a nice dessert and a cappuccino or latte and distress, but the loud bass of the too upbeat music they constantly play is so annoying and stressFULL. The best idea is putting Safir Bakery in kings highway. I've visit the avenue U location and all I can say is that they both have the best baklava in NYC. The new location is bigger than new location and the service is good. The smits are fresh and the other Turkish bakery and pastries are tasty and fresh. I recommend the smits the other sesame rolls with cheese inside. The baklava are all amazing. I prefer the chocolate and the double baklava. The price is reasonable for one of the best bakery in NYC. I came here to get many different slices of cakes for a group. The employee was quick and super nice. She provided suggestions in what I should get and happily prepared the slices so that they were all well presented. I was able to taste the red velvet cake and the chocolate cheese cake which were both delicious! One person from the group tried the strawberry cheesecake and found it a little frozen which is the only reason I can't give this place a full five stars. Yelp, I Half a bone to pick with you. Why oh why can't you a offer a .5 star option? Trying to decide whether to round up or down often sucks: Take this spot, for instance. Tried a piece of Chocolate Pistachio Baklava and also classic Baklava. Found them both ultra dense and lacking in flaky layers. "There are different styles of Baklava. Maybe this is the way they make it in Turkey," hubby opined. I don't know... Flavor was good, if a little one-dimensionally sweet, but I wasn't a fan. Also brought home a few long, thick cigar-shaped, almost snake-like Filo pies; both Spinach & Beef. Reheated them in the oven and they were absolutely delicious, boasting savory, well seasoned, generous fillings, and the flaky filo action I was longing for from the Baklava. Got a Simit, aka Turkish Sesame Ring that looks like a bagel with a bigger hole, coated heavily with...wait for it... sesame seeds. Really loved this, even a few days later, after warming it in the oven. It's more chewy and dense than a bagel. Especially enjoyed it with thin slices of cucumber, feta, and tomato. Finally, lured by their pretty green hue, hubby and I tried a couple Pistachio Cookies. A bit too sweet, but I liked their soft, chewy texture. They tasted like they were made with ground nuts in place of wheat flour, plus sugar, eggs, and not much else. Brightly lit space is pleasant enough, with some seating. Bottom line: This truly was a 3.5 star experience for me. When I heard from Ibrahim M that Safir had opened a branch on Kings HIghway, I was psyched because I like the one on Avenue U but it is a schlep from my apartment whereas this one is only a 3 mile walk (or 15 minute commute by bus or subway)! The first thing I noted was that the name on the awning was different than the name given to Yelp. If you look at the photo I posted, you can see it says on the awning "Safir Bakery & Coffee Shop" which I assume is the correct name. Safir is the bakery that supplies the other Turkish stores such as Kings Gourmet and Vintage with their baked goods. They offer flavorful meat, cheese, spinach and potato borek as well as pocha (stuffed breakfast pastries), simit (Turkish bagels) and full Turkish breakfasts. They also sell traditional Turkish pastries such as baklava. Their coffee is standard (I prefer the choices at Kings Gourmet down the street but there you can not sit) and prices are reasonable. There are several tables and the store has been designed to be comfortable, light and modern. Service is friendly though this morning I don't think they expected to be as busy as they were because they seemed a bit overwhelmed so there was a bit of a wait...a good problem for a new business! read more
