Whenever I pass by here, the sweet smell hits me with nostalgia and cravings. I'll always have a place in my heart for King Pin Donuts. Why? Because I lived in the building literally next door, 2525 Durant. I'd study with my windows open and I'd get a whiff of donuts at all hours of the day. It did teach me a lesson -- WILL POWER... Which was something I sometimes lacked, because I'd cave into the smell at odd hours and got myself a donut. Trust me, nothing like a donut at 2 am to boost you into study mode while on a sugar high. I liked to keep it simple with just a glazed donut or sometimes I'd get the cake ones just because I liked that they had sprinkles (yes, I am a child inside). Even now, the donuts aren't hard or stale and taste fresh. Custard-filled donuts are never too sweet and they never jip you on the filling. Absolutely mouth-watering. Totally worth the 2 hours it takes to find parking and all of the dank-weed-smelling hippies, wide-eyed giggly freshmen and loud-stereo-toting bums. We had been dating 3 years and married almost 6 months before he bothered even telling me about this place 2. When something tastes that good, losing muscular control is expected My experience started with eyeballing the doughnut making process off to the right side and wondering which sweet confection in the display case would satiate my need for sweet carbs. I decided on the buttermilk old-fashioned, the one that looks like a mound, not the circle-doughnut-shaped one, and was surprised at not just the deliciously sweet, oil-buttery flavor, but the warm-softness of the middle in contrast to the crispiness of the outside. I remember when I was in college, someone stole a bag of day old donuts from King Pin. This resulted in a police chase and eventual car crash. They're that good. I highly recommend the chocolate buttermilk (or any of the buttermilk donuts) with a carton of milk. read more

Came here upon the strenuous insistence of an acquaintance. But ugh, the service SUCKS. I was the only person in the shop and there were 3 workers in it. They saw me but kept talking to each other and completely ignored me! It took me 5 minutes to be able to order. I had a sudden donut craving, and I decided that I should try out this place because I have heard that they had really good donuts. I always just passed by, and thought to myself that I would one day try it. I was a little surprised how little selection they had, and I'm thinking its because I went there late. But, I got off the car with exactly $2.25 to buy two donuts. The place was tiny and dark, and I took a peek at the donuts. I ordered a chocolate custard filled donut and a twisty donut, and the total came out to $3.95. **&$*...I ran short by a lot. I started to dig my pockets and only 3 pennies fell out of my pocket... So I told the lady in a friendly way that I only brought $2.25, and asked her if I could switch the custard one to the cheaper twisty donut, and she gave me this funny face....and I have to say that she was quite rude about it. I think it would have helped A LOT if this store put a PRICE tag and a NAME TAG in front of the donuts. They do have a menu board, but its above near the ceilings. I didn't know which donut was what, and how much it cost. The twisty donut thing tasted okay, not the best I had. No lie, it's definitely hard to dismiss the scent of cloyingly sweet, fried dough as you walk up Durant Avenue at night. In addition, the racks of donuts they have next to the wide window makes it even easier to imagine yourself holding a warm, fluffy donut. However, through experiences I'd have to rate this place as A-OK. Its prices definitely went up from last year, and I am a bit hesitant to shell out 3.25 for a single donut. But if you really want a donut fix, go for it! I've tried their big donuts (the more expensive kinds? I'm not sure what it's called sorry!!) and when warm, they are so fluffy and delicious. Their apple fritter is huge and rich, and will fill you up if you eat all of it in one sitting (which I have done). If you want a cheaper alternative, go for their day old donuts! You get more bang for your buck, and you can always warm them up in your toaster oven and they still taste pretty great for cheap donuts. I've gotten a box of 3 small chocolate glazed donuts and 1 mint chocolate chip - the mint chocolate chip had a creamy frosting and was delicious after heating it up (even day old!!). I passed by here with some friends last night and as a first timer, I wasn't let down. Their donuts are a little too oily for me (my apple fritter leftovers left me with a translucent bag) but they've at least got taste and character. Best place to get fresh, scrumptious donuts at 2am! A bunch of coworkers and I stumbled across the street to this place after having a little too much fun at TapHaus and ordered a dozen of freshly baked mixed donuts to soak up the regrets of the night. My friends were loud and rowdy but the guy (I think he's the owner or maybe manager) was such a good sport and laughed with us (or at us?) We sat outside King Pin's and ate these delicious thigh gap killers and laughed our asses off, making a whole bunch of drunken noise but not once did he come out and yell at us. I ended dropping my chocolate donut (last one in the box) after taking just two bites and was sooooo sad...but then the owner came out and brought me a fresh one on the house!! He was super sweet! I was so impressed! He then brought my friend some water after he heard her coughing...what a great guy! I love businesses who truly care about the happiness of their customers, and for this guy to show a bunch of rowdy, drunken people such kindness has earned him my business for life! read more

This place is really good. I've been to Berkeley a few times, and each time I've gone here on the advice (insistence) of a friend who used to live here. These are great donuts - classic plain glazed is definitely the way to go.
