I've loved Condrell's since the early 90s, when middle-school huge-bangs pinned-jeans me used to meet her 7th grade BFFs here. And I loved that the place hadn't changed since probably the 80s. But the retro charm has been updated in recent years. Even so, I cannot deduct a star. The 80s blue and mauve may be gone, but the experience and quality of the treats are still excellent. Condrell's has a BIG menu of specialty sundaes with dozens of flavor combinations. It's all hard-scoop ice cream, loaded with both traditional, or creative toppings. From a basic banana split, to a sponge candy sundae, the options run the range of just about any candy you can think of. Even potato candy! (Which comes out around St. Patrick's Day.) I adore the fluffernutter combo because you can never go wrong putting PB and marshmallow together. There is a good amount of tables that do fill up at times, but usually you'll get a spot. Half of the space is the seating and the ice cream shop, and the other half is the chocolate shop. Condrell's chocolates are just as good as the ice cream. I have it on reliable authority that the Easter Bunny shops at Condrell's for our kids every year, so it must be good. Around the holidays, the chocolate expands into the ice cream area, with a great variety of displays. Including, of course, Buffalo's quintessential sponge candy--and it's sooooo good here. Chocolate is sold by weight, so if a truffle catches your eye, you can buy a box to bring home, or just buy one for a taste now. There are A LOT of chocolate types; you won't get bored working your way through the trays and trays of creamy treats. A trip to Condrell's will satisfy any sweet tooth. If you want to feel like a kid again, no matter what decade your childhood occurred in, Condrell's is a fantastic sweet spot for all kids, and kids-at-heart. read more

I can't believe I haven't ever reviewed Condrell's! This candy and ice cream shop is simply the best in town. The staff is exceptionally well trained, helpful, and professional in an old fashioned way. My absolute favourite is the peanut butter fudge sundae. I always get it with chocolate peanut butter ice cream. Last night they were sold out of chocolate peanut butter (which is the first time in 30 years that I've ever encountered a flavour being out of stock) and our waitress came over to explain that we had to 86 the chocolate peanut butter. At pretty much any other business that would have been the end of the story, but not here! Instead, the waitress specifically suggested other flavours that I might like and I selected the King Tut (vanilla with chocolate and peanut butter swirls). It was great!! The staff is always kind, efficient, and polite here and I just can't say enough good things about the ice cream. The new remodel really updated the space and makes this a Buffalo classic worthy of a visit if you're from out of town or just down the street. read more

Came here on my birthday with hopes of defeating the "Brain Freeze" Challenge (10 scoops of ice cream, toppings, etc). I placed my order only to be told a few minutes later that I could not order it because the place was closing in 45 minutes and that they wouldn't let me try the challenge because of that. I told the waitress that I would know if I could finish it within the first 25 minutes but then she said it would be too much work to clean it (inconsistent reasons). In the end, I ended up getting a regular sundae for my birthday, which was quite delicious but a let down because I had been preparing myself for the Brain Freeze. A visit to Condrell's is a fitting conclusion to my summer of Buffalo ice cream. I had the Mighty Mint from the Deluxe Treats section of the menu, and chose the Queen size. This was a scoop of chocolate ice cream with chocolate mint sauce, crushed Andes Mints, crushed Oreos and whipped cream. One scoop was plenty for me (I'm slightly lactose intolerant), but you can also upgrade to the King, which is two scoops of ice cream. I'd love it if more of the Deluxe Treat selections on the menu used ice cream flavors other than vanilla or chocolate. Some do, but most use one or both of those flavors. You can come up with your own sundae combination, like my husband did, but since they're ice cream experts, I'd be interested to see what kind of creative combinations they can think up. Table service is a definite bonus when eating in here. The menu's so extensive, that you're going to want to take a seat and mull things over. Bring cash to tip your server. While you can pay for your food and drinks with a card, you can't add a tip that way. read more

I guess I should preface this review with the fact that I went on a busy Friday night. My experience was a bit lackluster (although the ice cream was very very good). They were clearly really busy, and the staff was a little overworked. We got in, got seated, and were given menus. It took a while for them to take out order, but eventually we had our ice cream. My sundae was great. They had run out of black cherry ice cream, so I got black raspberry instead. The peach sauce and nuts on top were delicious. I absolutely loved the sundae and the ambiance. Why three stars then? Well, I think that in a full table service ice cream parlor, you need to deliver on the service. I ordered a root beer because they told me it's syrup made in house and mixed with seltzer water. What arrived at our table were big mugs of overly sweet, flat soda. When I told the waitress, she said that "that's the way the root beer is". One of my friends ordered a chocolate milkshake, and it took 20 minutes to make as they couldn't remember who had ordered it. All in all, the milkshake was taken off the bill. Long story short, I will be back because the ice cream sundae was great and I think they deserve a second chance. All in all I would recommend! read more

The employees will ask if you're dining in or ordering to go. Since we were dining in, a server said we could grab any table and she would be over to help us. There are plenty of seats to choose from. Once we were seated, reviewed the menus, ordered, and were brought our "mini" glasses of tap water. The portions are big and worth the price. Let me tell you, it was worth it. This place is adorable and in one of my favorite areas of Kenmore that I never go to. My fiance refers to this hood as "Del-Ken". There is a plethora of candies here that all look and sound delicious. But we came for ice cream, not chocolates. The most charming aspect of this shop is the table service! I mean come on, I don't think ever in my life have I had a waitress take my order for ice cream and ice cream alone! They deliver you a shot glass of water (ok, not exactly, but the glasses are comically small) when you sit down and give you a menu. As I've mentioned before I tend be indecisive and could not pick to save my life. Everything sounded like something I needed to be eating. Being overwhelmed with choice I opted for a classic banana split. Our sundae was delivered in a cute metal dish and two spoons. You can tell the whipped cream is homemade- it really puts the 'whip from anyplace else to shame. The ice cream was creamy and rich, the chocolate especially enjoyable. I will be back. Soon. What an amazing place! Despite living in Kenmore for years, we didn't realize Condrell's also had ice cream; we thought they were just candy. We've been in for ice cream ever since. The prices cannot be beaten and there is such a variety - - a full menu of ice cream! Don't be fooled, one scoop is HUGE! What can I say about this place? The exhaustive menu is initially overwhelming. Walk in and take a seat to get service. Take time with the menu and you are bound to find something you like. My favorite ice cream is Sea Salt Caramel and my favorite sundae is Cocoa Cream. That French Chocolate sauce is delicious. Red Devil Cake ice cream is delicious, but only available on a seasonal basis. It's a nice family run business with good service. They also have specially coffee, specially tea, small gifts, non-dairy options. They have special chocolates, truffles, candy apples, and even sour candies. Part of our recent trip to Buffalo included a mission to compare all the wonderful chocolate shops that dot the area. We had five on our list, and wound up getting to four of them (Mike's was the one we had to cut, so something to look forward to). The four we hit up were Parkside, Fowler's, Watson's, and Condrell's. So the ground rules for the judging were that we'd stick with the chocolates, get a few common specialties at each (chocolate-covered sponge candy, meltaways, and some sugar-free selections), along with anything that we felt like having and any shop-specific items that jumped out at us. What we discovered, after bringing home way, way too much chocolate, was a) too much chocolate is not good for you, and b) the results: I'm happy to say that Condrell's was the standout! Their selection is huge, they have a fair number of regular and sugar-free options, they had a lot of unique truffles, and they did some really interesting things with cocoa butter paint that made them pretty to behold. Prices were on par with the other places, but the best part was, when we got home and starting really making headway on the chocolate, it became clear that theirs were of better quality, and simply tasted better! The staff was probably the friendliest there, as well. The had the best meltaways. And they had a pretty cool selection of loose-leaf teas there, too. When I was a kid, a ton of my friends lived in Kenton or North Buffalo, so we would come here quite a lot. A sit down ice cream parlor? How freaking cool is that! As I got older, my love for King Condrells and ice cream never faltered, and I still find my way coming back here time and time again for some sundaes. All I ever get is a different kind of sundae. They now offer 2 sizes on the menu for sundaes but in the past you had to ask and it was not advertised. The selection of choices is impressive. I have never once been disappointed with any of the sundaes I have ordered. I try to order something different every time. They are really accommodating with substitutions of ice cream or toppings. Service can be slow, as all the workers appear to be under the age of 18 it seems. I wish they gave you more water /bigger cups though. That kiddie sized water when you have a big chocolate sundae just doesn't cut it for me. Overall, I love King Condrells sundaes. They can be a bit pricey, but the sizes are perfect and they taste delicious!! They are really good when it comes to paying separately when in a group, which is another huge plus! I've been into Condrell's for ice cream a few times. The first time everything was perfect. We got the kings portion of the cookie dough sundae and it was big enough for two. The staff was friendly and the service was fast. The second time that I went was a little different and the reason why there are only four stars. They were very busy, which was not the problem. The service was still quick and though the staff was busy they were attentive. The issue was that our sweet and salty sundae, which was supposed to have peanuts and chocolate cover pretzels. I used to live in Buffalo and it is one of the places I *always* visit when I am up there and have friends send me food from on occasion. It is a cute shop and though I have enjoyed teas and such I never had the ice cream, but what I can tell you... is that the candy is *the best*. Amazing ice cream sundae!! I ordered the Peanut Butter Fudge sundae - Queen's portion (1 scoop). The homemade whipped cream was out of this world, as were the hot fudge and peanut butter sauces. I would come here all the time if I lived closer. A couple of issues though: the girl working was THE ONLY person working and they were sort of busy. Definitely should have had another person on staff for a Sunday afternoon. Also, the place is old/dated. It is slightly charming but more weird. I dunno... 3 stars on the atmosphere, 4 on the service (I sympathized with this stressed out girl trying to meet everyone's needs), and 5 for the ice cream. The only thing I can think of is that people went here as kids and now when they go back as adults it makes them reminisce. I came here with a 94 year old woman whom was in the Air Force. She don't eat much so I asked if they can make a kids sundae for her. They said no only for 12yrs and under. Are you kidding me. I'm supposed to order some extravagant sundae she only have a few bites and waste the rest. All she wanted was a scoop of chocolate ice cream. Shelves were empty. The chocolate covered popcorn barely had chocolate on it. The flavored truffles just tasted like chocolate. It doesn't look like they are doing good business. Maybe because they are cutting down products or maybe it's just their soup nazi-ish way about them. Flexibility goes a long way. You are not the only candy store in Buffalo.
