I don't know why I was surprised to discover this was in a strip mall, but that's on me. A nice one, at least. The place was relatively busy but we were able to secure a table easily with zero wait time. Pleasant vibes inside. I don't mean this as an insult at all but I was expecting more ethnic decor in line with the restaurant's menu - instead, it's pretty Americanized and feels like a classic suburban NJ establishment. I liked the painted brick on the lefthand side that has Blue Spice's logo/sign on it; spiffy. The bathroom was also a high point, which is...not something I say often. It was very clean and smelled nice, and I liked the dark cruise-ship lighting vibe. We decided to split the scallion pancake app, which was an excellent decision. I work in the city and regularly have this item from a place in Chinatown, and I honestly thought this was better, mostly because it was thicker/denser than what I'm used to. Super tasty and would get that again in a heartbeat. Giant portion as well - we split the pancake, which was roughly the size of a small pizza. My chum had leftovers there, I did not; so it goes with us. I've had a few mediocre chicken katsu experiences of late, so this seemed like a chance for redemption. I ordered the Akiko Curry entree, which was their spin on chicken katsu curry. Honestly wasn't my favorite. Again, a HUGE portion here and was only able to finish about 60% of it despite having a pretty legit appetite coming in. And the presentation value is excellent as well, as far as that goes. This could easily just be a personal palate preference, but I wasn't crazy about the curry itself (which had a weird tang to it) and didn't resemble the standard curry I'm used to with this dish. Also, as you can see from the attached, the curry is basically on the side of the dish, separated from the chicken and rice. Because of that, the chicken is on the dry side, which is my primary beef (pun?) with the item to begin with. So a miss for me, but I could see why other people would like this (and apparently do). The service was excellent, full stop. Our waitress was very nice and personable; she had strong command of the menu and you could see her consistently engaging with other patrons throughout our meal as well. She took several group photos so this is apparently a Kingdom of Sussex hot spot for that, which I wouldn't have guessed. She was so good both of us remarked on it multiple times during the meal, which is a rarity. But a great example of hospitality markedly improving an experience and making what was already an overall positive situation that much better. Huge marks there. Would definitely come back but would explore other parts of the menu once I feasted on the scallion pancake.

All said, it would've been totally fine if both dishes didn't taste like mush. And both sauces tasted nearly identical. Sad, because service was great and the other dishes were absolutely phenomenal. They ran out of the ramen that day so I suspect that's a popular dish as well. I would just stick with the fusion style dishes. If my rating was based on the two fusion plates I had, would definitely be 4 stars!

With an array of intriguing options alongside classic pub fare, the menu is an adventure! It's small but comfortable and well decorated. The service was quick and friendly. I started with a lychee martini, perfectly paired with Korean Short Rib Tacos. The balance of flavors was impeccable--neither too sweet nor too stiff, with a texture that was just right. The tacos delivered a burst of flavor that did not disappoint. We also tried the Bahn Mi, which had great flavor, though it might not make our reorder list. A favorite from the pub menu was fried pickles. A must-have at every restaurant I visit, served as coins--the only proper way, in my opinion. The egg roll it came with was actually not too bad. It had a spice flavoring. Very minimal kind of like cinnamon. I've had it before at other locations where I've had that taste. I don't mind it. The string beans were pretty good and that's where everything else became downhill. My aunt got chicken ciao with Angel hair and she stated that the chicken was like gristle. My uncle got sweet-and-sour shrimp and it was full of the batter. His shrimp fried rice also was not the best. It was as if they fried up some rice and then just added some sautéed shrimp to it. Most of us ordered Hibachi Combo meals. I had the Hibachi Steak with a side of scallops. I asked for the steak to be medium rare. It came on the edge of well done. The scallops were slightly underdone. The meals were not complicated orders. The food should've had no issues. This was my first time at Tomo and I will probably give them another try and order something different. For now, I can only muster up a three star score for Tomo.
