Long post warning... Before I begin, I would like to request for those 1/2 point stars because sometimes things are not always black and white and the need for the in-between is the color gray. This is how I would describe Kim's Place with an almost 5 stars but lost a shaving of the 5th star; however if I could do as close to 5 stars I would. For now, let's say we are at 4 3/4 stars and I am sure as time goes on that 5th star will be completely shaded in by my next visit. Now my review... Kim's Place is probably not exactly what you are imaging it is, but if you thought it was a noodle take out place you would be wrong. Kim's Place is some of THE BEST southern soul food prepared by those talented melanin hands that we all know as "family." When I walked inside the restaurant, I was given a very friendly and verbal embrace to welcome me. I was pleasantly surprised to see all the vibrant colors, African artwork, and African American world leaders on the wall. There was a lovely tribute to the eatery's namesake as a permanent nod to her influence shining down from heaven. Over in the corner is a full service bar that beckons you to come and choose your libations. Since it was my first time in the space, I wanted to take it all in. There was a musical charge that was in the energy not just from the speakers, but also from the vibes of the place. It felt like a spot to gather with your friends and family to sit down and eat, socialize, and then talk trash over a board game, spades, or uno. I decided to make my order for two. One plate was the chitterlings or "chitlins" dinner that comes with white rice and one side [fried okra] and the yams, and the other plate was the seafood dinner which was whiting, shrimp, and crab rice. I also had yams and greens which surprisingly are not cooked in pork which is a YAY for me. I also ordered the banana pudding and the red velvet cake. Here are the food review highlights. The food portions were huge. You definitely would not go hungry. I heard the chitlins were absolutely phenomenal. The fish, shrimp, and okra were fried nice and firm which is what I love. The greens and yams were also pretty good too. The greens do have their stems with them, so if you are picky about that then you may opt for something else. The crab rice could have used a little more crab because it was hard tell if it was in there even though it had plenty seasonings and flavors. It was good, so do not opt out if that is what you want. The desserts we ordered could also use slight adjustments as well. For example, the banana pudding was too sweet to the point it was headachy sweet, but the flavor had all the components to be good. The red velvet cake was not too sweet, but the cake part was a little dense. Again, not bad in flavor though. Overall, I would say Kim's Place will be on repeat when I want a full home cooked meal without cooking it and a place where I can take my friends to eat and drink. Look for it on the corner of MLK and Gwinnett streets in the grey building that house a few businesses with Kim's Place in the center. I would highly recommend several visits to Kim's Place. read more

These are the best oxtails I've ever eaten. The gravy reminds me of my mama's gravy. I could eat rice & gravy alone. Everything is seasoned well. The lil ol piece of cornbread ain't enough for the ample amount of veggies. And it's sweet. Blah. But I'll let that slide for food this good. read more

So I finally made it to Kim's café, I tried getting there a couple of years ago on my road trip back from Florida, but it was pouring rain and I sat in front of the place for a half hour and the rain did let up so I couldn't get in... Stopped by Kim's Cafe on my last day of a weekend trip to Savannah. When we arrived, we were greeted and the staff let us know that we could sit at any open table. The restaurant is filled with beautiful murals and paintings. Upon finding a table to sit at, it took a little while for a server to come take our drink and food orders, but that was the only downside to our experience. We ordered the salmon, egg, and cheese sandwich and the fish and grits and everything was delicious! You could tell they put a lot of care and attention in the food they serve. It did take a little bit of time for our food to come out, however, there are signs in the restaurant noting that food prep isn't "fast", so that was appreciated. Next time I'm back in town, I'll definitely make it a point to grab another meal here. read more

We saw this spot on Yelp and decided to check it out for breakfast since our usual spot was closed. I will say this, if you want some home cooked food this is the spot. Everything was good and reminded us of a some good down home food. One thing that stood out was the gravy. It's a bit thick and light brown. My husband was a little thrown off but liked it a lot. I dined at Kim's cafe today. The food was so delicious. I had the stewed Turkey wings, the meat was falling off the bone tender, the macaroni and cheese was delicious and the yams were like pie. The dinner was serve with a cornbread muffin and warm hospitality. The dining room is painted black and decorated in beautiful colorful art. It's clean, it's cool and it's the place to be if you love soul food. The choices are endless, from oxtails to fried chicken and everything in between. They even had a great variety of desserts. Food was AMAZING!! I'll definitely return. But next time it will be TAKEOUT! The understaffed cafe really hurt the food industry. Two people to service over 10 people. And our waitress was definitely new. Not customer-oriented. She didn't check on us not once since dropping off our food. Ordered waffles & asked for syrup & butter. Nothing delivered. I got up to request both. By the time, we got those items, food was cold. Lost flavor & appetite. Myself, I had liver & onions. That food was fresh & hot. DELICIOUS!! Really enjoyed Sunday dinner here at Kim's Cafe! It made up for my meal from Saturday. I had the Ox Tails, Mac & Cheese, Collards and Okra & Tomato's. Everything was seasoned perfectly. The dark gravy on the Ox Tails threw me off just a little bit it didn't alter the taste at all. Mac was cheesy and greens were well seasoned even without any meat in them. My favorite dish, almost anywhere I go, is Okra and these didn't disappoint. Dining Room was peaceful, clean and not crowded for a Sunday. Our server was kind and attentive. Upon entering, the female owner/employee in a white t shirt did not greet me (though she saw me) as she did other arriving customers after me. All customers should be treated courteously. I ordered what I thought would be smothered turkey entree, but I was only served a lot, if not only, FAT with a bunch of sauce on it! Virtually just tiny shards of meat. I had to throw it out. A waste of my time and money - will never go there again. I got better service and food at another Black-owned restaurant. read more

Great food and friendly people. My issue is with the length of time it took to order my food and receive my breakfast. It took 8 minutes from the time we were seated to the time a server approached us. I ordered the two egg with meat breakfast and coffee. Pretty simple. My wife ordered the two fish and egg platter with a water. Our drinks came out fast, but it took 40 minutes for them to bring out the breakfast. Between that 40 minutes, my coffee nor my wife's water were refilled. We weren't the only ones waiting. There were several others that waited just as long as we did. No way should breakfast take that long to be served. As friendly as the people were, it takes away from the service when you're waiting 40 minutes on the food to come to the table. The food was delicious. Creamy grits, eggs scrambled how I ordered, perfectly fried bacon, and the coffee was delicious. My wife's fish was fried with a nice crunch on the outside, seasoned perfectly, tender and juicy on the inside, which is what we like. Please Kim, do something to get those orders out faster. I'm not sure if you were short staffed that day, as there was only one server. I love the vibes, I love patronizing my brothers and sisters establishments, and when I return to Savannah we will come back hopefully to faster service. I've been in Savannah for nearly 11 years and never noticed this spot since working near the Civic Center. A coworker constantly talks about Kim's café. Then one afternoon he decided we should go and what did I do that for. I ended up getting the liver and onions with fried okra's and macaroni and cheese, sweet tea and to top it off a piece of red velvet cake. I was surprised at this service, the ambience and the overall decor of the establishment. I can't say that I got a picture after I ate all of it, it was too late.I went again with another coworker, and the food was still amazing to me yet again to full to do anything else. I really Like this place.hard to catch if you aren't looking for it but nice location. Kind of cafeteria style. The service is AMAZING, like I really loved my conversation with the lady at the counter and she gave great recommendation of how I could mix and match the things I was interested in. The sandwich (egg, cheese, Turkey bacon on Texas toast) is the best 4.50 sandwich you'll get fro breakfast. Although we were the only people sitting there they had at least 12 people come in to get a to go order. I loved the sandwich so much that I came back for it the next day but unfortunately they forgot my Turkey bacon and I was pretty disappointed. I lived too far to go back and fix it and when I called them couldn't get an answer. They only Lose one star for this though bc I will for sure be back. The moment you walk in you are welcomed like there was a family reunion or a BBQ going on with soulful R&B music hitting your eardrums. The quality of the food was sublime and put true definition to soul food. I got the 3PC Chicken Dinner with BBQ chicken, Mac and cheese, and collard greens and like John Whitherspoon said in Friday After Next, "Makes you wanna slap yo mama". Reminds me of waiting for the church service to be over because mother Bond was fixing up some collard greens.
