Kimganae is one of the two Korean style snack houses next door on this street. There is plenty of seating, updated décor, and excellent service. Whether you are dining in or picking up a to-go order, you are not rushed. This is a great place to meet up with friends and have a snack, because the prices are really low and the staff is patient. They accept credit cards. There are plenty of outlets, and they will even let you charge your phone/device while you dine. Bathrooms are clean and accessible. My favorite dish here is their Chung-Mu Kimbap, which is served in the traditional manner that I have become accustomed to. It is absolutely delicious! My friend got the tuna roll which is good too (FYI, it's canned tuna they use). I love the complimentary miso soup and kimchi they provide. Ah...a nice, casual Korean restaurant. I honestly don't remember the last time I was ever in one...or have been in one. It's good to finally sit down at a family-owned Korean restaurant for once that doesn't charge exorbitant prices for small portions. My friend has been coming here since his childhood and he swears by this place, so we came here for something different. This particular block is really something special and magical if you're looking for authentic food. I got the Kimganae Donkatsu, which is pork cutlet and there was nothing special about it. The pork was kind of stale and dry and it wasn't really crispy, but my friend (for some reason) loves this place. Guess it's the childhood nostalgia. The miso soup that they kept coming, was from soup packets and tasted awful. Pros: Ive been going here since high school. Since then, the place has expanded to the store next door and has hired more people (not for serving/waiting tables) to handle the operations on the back end. Kimganae serves consistently good casual Korean food. It's fast and tasty. Fast because I once came here and ate and left in about thirty minutes. It was packed and was with a group of two so I would definitely say that's fast. It's tasty and has a wide range of food items from bimbimbop to pork cutlet over rice. The lunch menu is a great deal so if it's your first time trying it, go during lunch time! The servers are fast roaming and nice. They give you pickled radish and some kind of salty soup. You can ask for more of both if you like. TIP: If you plan to get the CURRY PORK cutlet with rice, get the curry pork cutlet on the SIDE WITH THE ALL THE DIFFERENT PORK CUTLETS. If you order from there, its $1 more for TWO cutlets rather than one. That's a better bargain. So be careful what you say/order from. That determines how many curry pork cutlets you get (1 or 2). Cons: During rush hour, there are times when the food will lack quality. For example, I ordered baby octopus over rice and spicy beef kimbob. When it came, I was utterly disappointed because the rice was basically like a scoop of ice-cream size and the onions and octopus combination was probably 70% ONIONS and 30% octopus. I expected more meat substance from them. The spicy beef kimbob was also lacking in meat. It was about 50% rice and 50% meat/vegetables. Some honorable mentions are Spicy Tuna/Tuna Sesame Leaf Roll, Spicy Beef Rolls, Bulgogi Squid Roll, and etc . All for a very affordable price and very tasty! The ladies behind the counter make the kimbap rolls as you order. If you are taking out, you can watch how professionally they roll them. One roll is about 12 pieces. The evenly cut pieces are all very big with rice, assorted Korean vegetables, and the meat. The kimbaps have a shine to it because they rub a bit of oil all over it. If you get the take-out, when you open the foam container, it almost looks like it is glowing! Very simple but an impressive presentation for a take-out dish! Rice dishes are okay. The miso soups were refillable during the later hours of business when I was there (probably trying to get rid of them). Good thing, more for us! I first came to Kimganae in my freshman year of high school and it started my Korean food experience so it had a special place in my hungry heart; I would even say that I became a regular customer there. However, all that changed after having FIVE bad experiences there. The first few bad experiences were not enough for me to end my eating career at Kimganae; still, with the servers becoming meaner and the overall service turning slow, I just had a hunch that this place is changing for the worst. The fifth bad experience happened just before the pandemic when indoor seating was not an alien idea. My girlfriend and I wanted to eat Korean food and since we havent gone back for the duration of a semester, we decided to give Kimganae a try again. Food: - Tteokbokki (2/5): I've had a tteokbokki obsession for a year now and I keep trying to find a place that serves it as amazingly as Do Shi Rak does for an affordable price; therefore, I decided to try the cheese tteokbokki at Kimganae. I was very disappointed. The visual was literally rice cakes just floating on red soup with lacking amount of cheese. Taste wise, it wasn't the worst out of all the food we ordered but I hated the fact that the spice overcame the savor of it. - Fish Cutlet (4/5): I was glad that this made this experience a bit better which says a lot because even this won't be the best food if I had it at another restaurant. The fish cutlet itself didn't taste as fresh as when I had it for the first time four years ago; it was a bit hard to chew but the taste was pretty great. My girlfriend ordered this but because it was the best one out of all that we ordered, I ended up taking one whole cutlet out of the three (note: they give two or three cutlets depending on how big each cutlet is) so I felt a bit sorry for her :/ - Pork Cutlet (1/5): This used to be my favorite selection at Kimganae but something must've happened as now, it also tastes not as fresh as it used to be. Service: - Servers (2/5): The place was packed and so we expected the service to be slower; however, as we were waiting for someone to take our order, we noticed that there were two servers who were just standing but still didn't notice us. - Front Cashier (1/5): On the way out, my girlfriend wanted to get kimbap to go as the food didn't satisfy her (to be honest, me too). She ordered at the front and the man who took her order was quite unwelcoming with his stern look and kinda rude tone. However, that wasn't the worst part. When her order was ready, we went to pick it up and she didn't get the order she asked originally so she told the man. The man was extremely rude saying that she should have said it clearer and then took the order back kind of aggresively. I was surprised by this behavior because even I heard my girlfriend's order and he was the one who was still talking to the other people behind the counter while taking our order; moreover, that is in no way you should be handling a customer who politely corrects you. Overall (1/5): The food isn't as good as it used to be. The service is become more rude, unprofessional, and lazy. I don't quite understand how Kimganae has 4/5 stars on Yelp; I'll just relate that rating to the restaurant's interior which is renovated nicely. If you want to go to a Korean place that satisfies your mouth, go to the tiny Korean restaurant next to Kimganae or maybe check out Do Shi Rak or other ones in Northern Blvd. If you want to satisfy your instagram feed, then I guess Kimganae's not too bad. read more

The ladies only speak Korean, but what they lack in English, they make up for in high efficiency kimbap-rolling. A smile and nod always work as well. The kimbaps always taste fresh and are quite filling. The sheer volume of menu options is scary, so I usually opt for their trusted bulgogi or spicy squid or spicy tuna kimbaps. I should branch out sometimes, but those varieties are my go-to's. This shop is quite similar to Woorijip in Koreatown, where seating is just as impossible. Me and another party ordered the eel roll, the pork chop udon and the beef over rice. Everything was tasty and excellent. The eel roll had imitation crab meat in it which was a new thing for me. I liked it. The beef over rice was a huge portion. If the fried pork chop was served separately from the udon noodle soup, I would have liked it even more. Come here if you want cheap Korean food! This is a typical boonshik (comfort food, it's inexpensive) place. Their menu ranges from donkatsu (regular, kimgane style, pizza, cheese, and kimchi cheese), bulgogi, kimchi fried rice, ramyun as well as their own range of different kimbaps. The prices include tax so what you see is what you'll pay minus the tip. If you order a dish that has something over rice, you will typically get corn and salad along with it. For the amount that you pay, you will get more than enough to fill your stomach. They are generous with their portions and you get soup on the side that can be refilled. read more

To start off, they give you complimentary soup and a side dish of pickled radish instead of your usual kimchi/banchan. You can't go wrong with ordering some kimbap rolls - my favorite is the spicy tuna roll. I especially like dipping the rolls into the dukbokki sauce. The flavor of the dukbokki was the perfect balance of sweet and spicy but the rice cakes were overcooked, leaving them super soft and losing that chewy texture that I enjoy. Been here 2 times so far. Both times we ordered it to go at the cash register upon entering restaurant. Very filling Gimbap rolls! They are delicious for when we are hungry and want some quick and easy to eat. Mess-free on the go. The rolls are made to order right then and there but are not warm or hot. The spicy tuna roll 5.75 and the beef roll 6.00 are decent ones. There are many more choices, just grab and menu and look under rolls section. It's cool to watch them make it. Service is very fast! Right when you sit down they give you a free soup per person (I think it's kombu soup? Nothing inside it but the broth tasted like that) plus a small bowl of spicy pickled daikon. We got the spicy tuna kimbap, eel kimbap, and spicy squid dish. The spicy squid dish was the star. However, it wasn't very spicy unfortunately and had more vegetables than squid. It still was very tasty though and came with a shredded cabbage salad (with dressing), corn, and white rice. As for the kimbap, both came with shiso leaves. I liked the spicy tuna more even though it only had 2 ingredients. The eel one was interesting but I couldn't really taste the eel personally - maybe because there were more ingredients? The kimbap, though, is a great deal - coming with 11 pieces! Overall, I think this place is worth it if you want quick service, a good deal, and Korean food somewhat close to the Chinese side of Flushing. read more

My fiance and I went to Kimganae. Our initial thought was: the atmosphere was busy. Just like many restaurants in this area, you may have to be seated really close to other parties or at the same table, so be warned if you like space and privacy. We ordered the K6 (Chicken Roll), D4 (Cheese Dukbokki), and R8 (Spicy Beef Over Rice) The Chicken Roll (6$) was tremendously dry and was average at best. The Cheese Dubokki (10$) can be mistaken for cheese lasagna. It tasted as if they used American hot sauce instead of the traditional paste. The dubokki itself was not very chewy and again, average at best. The Spicy Beef over rice (12$): NOT WORTH!!!!!!!!!!! The rice was so dry even drinking a whole lake would not satisfy my quench. Maybe that's why they give you free miso. The only decent part was the beef itself. The service here is average. You can pay the bill by card, but you pay tip by cash. Overall, we would not recommend this place. For about the same price, you can go to "The Basac" and have true traditional Korean food and rice you can actually swallow. read more

I remember the first time I visited this restaurant a few years ago, all the food was amazing and at a great price. However, I recently visited again and ordered the beef kimbap rolls with the pork cutlet like I used to, and noticed that they didn't taste like how they did. In addition to the taste, the rolls had increased in price, from $5.50 to $7.50. I looked at the menu and noticed that almost every single item I had used to get had increased in price as well in just 3 years. This was just a shame for me since being a student, one of the reasons why I loved this place so much was for the affordable pricing. They also renovated the place so instead of a bright color wall, they now have a monochrome gray color and have more of a modern vibe to this small restaurant now. The servers were nice and friendly and delivered our food pretty quickly, since it was only a weeknight when I came here, so it was not busy. Overall, if you're near Main St, Flushing and are looking for a quick stop at a restaurant to eat Korean food, I would recommend this place. I was so excited to try this place since it has such good reviews and I see lines for it all the time. When I went, the line for a table was pretty long so I got it to-go. I went with the seafood dukbokki. It was a surprisingly small portion for $10. All it is is some purchased rice cakes warmed up with gochujang, a little bit of carrot, a little cabbage, and a really stingy portion of octopus. I had maybe 4 small tentacles. At first I thought they had made a mistake since I didn't see any octopus, but then I realized it was all at the bottom covered up by the gochujang sauce. There were no more than 8-10 rice cakes. The flavor was okay at best. There was no seafood flavor. The only flavor was the spiciness of the gochujang. I finished the dish is just a few minutes and was still hungry. Luckily I also got the spicy beef kimbap, although it ended up being disappointing as well. It costs $6 and you get 12 small slices out of it. It is made there to-order and there was a lot of filling, so I can see why it costs $6. But the taste was almost nonexistent. The beef was essentially flavorless. It had no bulgogi flavor and was not spicy. It was just mealy beef. The other ingredients were sort of tasteless as well. And I'm used to my kimbap having sesame oil in it, which I did not taste at all in this. The kimbap I get from H Mart is much better than this. I ended up paying almost $20 for this meal and I should have, instead, just gone to New World Mall and spent $7 on a big bowl of hearty noodle soup. read more
