Dang good barbecue! We were in the area & based on their 4 star rating decided to have a late lunch at Killien's Barbecue. We scored on this choice. As you enter the restaurant you order at a glass counter where you can see all the hot sides dishes and watch them prepare your order. I ordered a sliced brisket sandwich with a side of potato salad. An ample amount of tender brisket is piled on a toasted bun along with a good portion of pickled red onions & kosher pickles. The potato salad is the best I've had eating out. It was more like homemade and even had boiled eggs. My hubby ordered a Pulled Pork sandwich which was equally piled high on a toasted bun served with the obligatory coleslaw. He also ordered potato salad plus an order of green beans. He said his sandwich was delicious! But the green beans! He offered me a couple of bites and they are scrumptious. Also enjoyed fresh iced tea. Service was fine and the dining room was spotless as were the restrooms. We'll be back! (Sorry about the photos. Four of us went to lunch at Killen's yesterday. I am a big barbecue fan so I was a little disappointed by this visit. The food was good, but I have had better. I was actually astonished at the pricing too. It was very expensive for what you got. We had one special (cream corn wish a little barbecue on top), two sliced beef sandwiches, three sides and a pulled pork plate (plus 4 drinks). It was over $75. This has to be one of the top barbecue places in Houston. Killen's is consistently good. I had the two meat plate with lean brisket, sausage, collard greens, and Brussels sprouts. My friend had the beef rib plate with cole slaw and mac and cheese. Everything was tasty and nothing was overly smoky like some barbecue can be. The sides were all delicious and we even managed to take home some banana pudding for dessert. It's a little pricy, but worth the cost. read more

The food was perfectly seasoned with the right amount of salt, pepper and smoke flavoring the product. Darn! We finally had some amazing barbecue in the Woodlands...when they first opened. But something has changed. Not everything but enough to warrant a serious downgrade in my review. We hit Killen's about every two or three weeks, and the last couple of visits, especially today, we noticed that the brisket is extremely dry, almost chalky, and now it's extended into the ribs and chicken. The lines are noticeably shorter so they're not getting the turnover they're used to which may be a contributing factor. Whatever it is, this is not damn fine barbecue any more and I am not nearly as excited about it. Still, the pulled pork and baked beans are as good as ever, which IS damn good, almost worth the trip alone. If you sauce the ribs they're still meaty and well smoked. The serving crew is pleasant and efficient and the dining room is roomy and comfortable. But... but... This is Texas BBQ and if your brisket is bone dry and your chicken and ribs are not much better, it's just hard to recommend you. Especially when Tejas and Corkscrew are just a little bit further down the road. I know I speak for every barbecue fan on the north side when I say that I hope the last few visits have been an aberration and that they can figure this out. First the good stuff. The Mac and cheese was good. The dining room is clean. The service was acceptable. The brisket was a bit too "wet" and their pickle choice wasn't great as well as having pickled onion instead of fresh. The unsettling part. Not sure if this guy is owner or manager but there's some unshaven guy hanging out between the kitchen and dining room in a Killens hoodie and hat and grey track pants. He has opted for staring with his arms crossed or shoved into the hoodie pocket. You can't really tell if he's staring at you or not when he stares your way but the half open mouth an vacant gaze is unwelcoming. At some point he took a turn through the dining room looking at bottles of bbq sauce and stating out loud he was tired "them not doing their job" and then critiquing later about how chairs are pushed in. Just gives off a general "f**k off/passive aggressive vibe or like he might snap at any moment if you look at him wrong. Personally, if you're gonna be that visible of a figure of the establishment then clean yourself up and put on decent business casual clothes and shave. read more

Tremendous barbecue. It's so nice to have actual good barbecue in the area without having to drive to Corkscrew or Tejas. I'm here about once a week and normally opt for the bbq (naturally). The brisket and ribs are excellent. I have dabbled in the other stuff on their extensive menu. That Nashville chicken sandwich is great! They have high quality sides. Greens & Brussels sprouts are my favorites. Mac & cheese is a crowd favorite. Kinda expensive, yeah. But meat is expensive. read more

We stopped there this past Friday. Brisket sandwich was delicious but fries and fried mac and cheese were very greasy and unnecessarily heavy. The fryer was definitely not up to temp when they were fried and absorbed way to much oil. Price was on the high side for what we got. Not really a line to get it right around 1pm. Overall good 3 out of 5 for me. Would I go again? Maybe if it was closer to me but wouldn't drive 45 to go again. read more

Speaking of employees, while nice we're the slowest and the inattentive I've ever seen. Was the only person in the line and stood there for minutes waiting to be served. The floors are extremely slippery, A/C not working properly, and the front counter workers looked miserable and were unhelpful (although the cashier was nice!) I had high expectations for this place, I was surprised when I pulled up and no one was there. The place was clean and the staff was kind however the food was cold and not good. The brisket was very oily and lacked flavor. I'm not big on salt but everything could have used a dash of salt. My buddy and I went to Killens for dinner. I had the 3 meat platter (brisket sausage and pork ribs) with collards and beans. My buddy had brisket and sausage with Mac and cheese and beans. We both had the he fatty cut on the brisket. Brisket was cooked good. It had a good smoke flavor and nice bark. The sausage was made with too much cheese. The casing had a nice snap. It was greasier than I expected. The poor rib was dry and overcooked. I needed sauce to eat it because it was dry. The collards and beans were excellent. I was disappointed that they ran out of a couple meats at 4 in the afternoon. I would go back for the collards and the brisket. I would definitely pass on the pork ribs. If they had sausage without the cheese I would consider trying it. read more

Delicious!! We shared the ribs, Brisket and Jalapeño Sausage. Loved it all! Note: they add cheese to their jalapeño sausage (my husband wasn't a fan). Sides were great. Macaroni and cheese was very good as was the creamed corn. Enjoyed the collard greens as well. Friendly staff and very clean inside. Bathrooms were super clean (a good sign). Terrible customer service. They screwed up my order and didn't even acknowledge or apologize. I have catered from here a few times this year. Other times were great - this last time not so good. Spent almost $300 on a pick up order. They forgot 2 lbs of brisket. Had to drive 30 minutes back to pick it up. Instead of apologizing, they acted annoyed and implied I was lying by saying "I'm almost certain we packed it". Check your cameras, jerks. It was a great place when it opened but got greedy and ripping people off. Last time I went in there I got a rib plate. The rib was 1/4 the size they were when they opened. At least 1/2 of it was fat and in uneditable, there were very nice people that ran it at first. Anyway I complained and they did nothing for me. The plate was $26 and I left hungry.
