Because the value was good but the quality was just okay. --- --- --- I've wanted to check this place out for a while now and it finally worked out when we were heading over to my in-laws for the day who live nearby. Since we had 4 people eating and I wanted to try a bunch of things, I went a little crazy on the order. I went with a pound of sausage, a pound of brisket, a pound of pulled pork and a rack of ribs. I also ordered baked beans, mashed potatoes and green beans as sides. I could have ordered half of that and still had leftovers. Nothing necessarily stood out as great. The green beans were pretty subpar - they tasted like they were straight out of a can. The baked beans were unimpressive. I think everything else ranged from decent to pretty tasty. But the best thing about this place was that a mountain of food was had for $102. We all could have eaten at least two full meals from this amount of food. Would it have been much more delicious if it had come from Killen's? Absolutely. It also would have cost twice as much. This is an incredibly small and humble operation, so I was glad to support them. If you're looking for bang for you buck in Montgomery, this is a good choice. read more

Man I hate to write this but I really have to. After my rave review a while back and another visit or two, I have to admit that I'll never be back. The food is delicious, the people who run it are great, but this place is just filthy. I can't get past it. The dining room probably hasn't been cleaned in 10 years...or ever. You can't see out of the windows they're so filthy and the door jambs are black from handprints that would come off with a splash of Windex. You know what they say - if it looks like this out in the dining room where everyone can see it, you don't want to know what it looks like in the kitchen. I have no idea if that's true and I certainly have never had any food that tasted less than delicious, but if you can't wash your windows or sweep the floor, maybe you shouldn't own a restaurant. read more

I was excited to try this barbecue restaurant due to the high ratings online. The barbecue was good but not as good as I expected it to be. They had good pork ribs and brisket, but the sausage was dry and not very flavorful. We're pretty picky about our BBQ, but we were very impressed with our food! The cobbler was to die for and everyone was very friendly! Bottom line: Ribs, Brisket and Lemon Pie are very good Funny story... Knowing I was about to head to Texas for a quick work event, I wanted some BBQ and I figured I'd get that done before the work event started. Using Yelp, I searched for BBQ not far from our event. I chose Yo Mama's. But I needed to hedge my bet a bit so I called them yesterday before I left Colorado to quiz them a bit about their Q and confirm their hours for today. I spoke to Kelvin by phone. He was fun. Told him what I was looking for and he said "C'mon!". His version of "Bring it on" :) Me and 6 friends showed up and ate everything on the menu pretty much. I felt the pork ribs were the star. Tender and flavorful. The brisket was next in my book. Thick sliced and super tender. The sausage came in 3rd for me. A bit chewy at the end of the day. Would like to try them earlier in the day. In fact, Kelvin told me to come by tomorrow and he'd have some jalapeno sausage for me to try. Kelvin gave me a tour of the smokehouse. Had about a 6' long stick burner in there with a couple slabs of spares on it and a brisket. Later, he cut off a couple of ribs and brought them out to me to try. I shared one with a friend. These ribs were done to about competition doneness. Cooked but with a bit of a chew for mouth feel. And SO flavorful as the rub was still very evident. My friend really enjoyed it too. When we were done eating, someone asked what "burnt ends" are. Kelvin said "hold on". He went and got us a plate of them. Oh my gosh! So good! Then when we were really done, Calvin brought out 1/2 slices of their homemade Lemon Creme Pie. Once again, OMG! A thin flaky crust. A creamy lemony pie filling. So good. Great meal. read more

I have only myself to blame. I read plenty of reviews that had me leaning away from this place, yet I went along with my husband and settled for this place. And settled is the correct word. There were plenty of obvious signs as soon as we pulled up. It was about 6.10pm on Friday night and they close at 7. Getting the remaining/left over bbq from the entire day was the first mistake. Our old tough and cold bbq is proof enough to anyone that this should always be your first consideration when going to a bbq place. This is definitely not a place you want to sit down and dine in. they had one table, one bigger sized table, but everything else was crowded around it. Even if we had wanted to eat there in the first place, we would have changed our minds. Some folks did say hello to us when we entered, but I would not use the friendly in this statement. Not that they couldnt have been friendly, in the beginning of their day, but at this point in the early evening, they were just flat out tired, and it showed. We hung in there and still ordered food. Prices were modest, not a steak house, but not taco bell. we made the first mistake our ordering the beef 'moist' like we do at Rudys. NO NO... moist here just meant it floated in a small pool of bbq sauce in the bottom of our plates. I ordered 3 different meats, chicken beef and ribs. passed 100% on the chicken because it was not a shade of dark meat that I thought wise to ingest. The sliced beef was so dry, despite the sauce, that I ripped it for the dog. its still on his plate. The rib, singular, was good, the first one I had. the other rib, the second rib, was so overcooked that there was not any meat left to eat. It was just burnt barbq sauce at this point. I looked at my husband and he kept his head down and didn't say a word, just spooned in the yellow mush otherwise known as potato salad. The beans were good. read more

My usual rule is: if you don't see a line at a barbecue joint, there's probably a reason. There was no line here at all, a little after 6:00 p.m. They said they're about to close early. Should have taken that as a sign. The big sign out front says "Need no teeth eat my beef!" And it's true. The brisket was super tender--fell apart when just touched lightly with a fork. The smoked sausage was pretty good as well. So why 3 stars? The sides were blah, and the peach cobbler just awful. Best BBQ ribs I have ever eaten! An unassuming "hole in the wall", but oh my goodness... the food!! Delicious! For the order my hubs called in and picked was $83.00 for 9 people with leftovers...I finally got to try the beans my sister said were amazing, but didn't offer any the weekend before She was right, but I love that sauce, soon to be sold in jars!! I've had great BBQ and I've had not so great. This definitely ranks in the latter. Maybe this was an off day; while it was raining, it was also during the Montgomery antique festival. I'm certain the sides of potato salad & beans came straight from the grocery store, and from a can and a plastic carton. The ribs were okay and tender, but the brisket was tough and had clearly been warmed in the microwave. When we arrived at 1 pm, there wasn't another customer in the place. Just tried this place for lunch today. My wife and I are on a keto diet right now, so I ordered two pounds of brisket with no sides to feed us today and tomorrow. I asked for point, not flat, and the girl at the counter looked at me like I was speaking Mandarin. Seemed a red flag that the person working a Texas BBQ joint was ignorant of those words, but the reviews were good, so I just took what I was given. Service was slow, with it taking over 10 minutes to get my very simple order, even though I was the only person in the place. What I was given was untrimmed flat, with essentially no bark, and no point (deckle) to be found, with an absurd amount of fat. Even with the fat layer, the brisket was pretty dry, as if it had been sliced long ago instead of at time of order. At least the fat was rendered. My wife and I were filled, but not necessarily satisfied. We'll try this place again sometime soon, and update this review. Hopefully this was just an off-day. read more

The hamburger was about the same quality as McDonald's hamburger, but not as flat. Friend had brisket, sausage and rib plate. He said it tasted like a microwave meal. No flavor except for the bbq sauce. Beans were the same. Best tasting thing was the pickles. The peach cobbler was even gross. Undercooked and not sure where the peaches came from. Waited 50 minutes to find out his order was given to someone else. Asked for ketchup and mustard and took another ten minutes. The food is as bad as the place looks and smells when you walk in. $14 for the chicken plate and a Walmart bottle of water. Don't eat here! read more
