My husband and I have been to Phil's a total of 5 times, first time was good, food came out on time and service was good. The next few times ordered a steak ribeye medium rare and every time it came out rare or blue. 4th time bit into a ziplock zipper in my potato salad and 5 time steak came out rare again and looked mangled when cutting into it. My family and I were in the area doing some shopping and decided to stop by Phil's since it was close to our first destination. The place has a warm and homey atmosphere that makes you feel welcome right away. I ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes, a baked potato, and broccoli. The meatloaf was excellent and definitely worth ordering again. The broccoli was overcooked and not something I would choose next time. My wife had the chicken fried chicken and fried okra. The okra was outstanding, crispy and full of flavor. The chicken was moist and delicious, with a seasoning in the breading that reminded us of Tony Chachere's. Took a chance on Phil's tonight, which was a bad decision on my part. Here is why. I opted for a plain Cesar Salad as it was the healthiest offering on the menu. It looked great when it was served and was laden with croutons. However, the croutons tasted as if they had been dipped in habanero sauce. I know they were not, but whatever made them "hot" was a deal breaker. I sent the order back. Next, I decided on one meat and two sides. I chose a double order of broccoli. The meal arrived. This was or 4th visit, brought family from out of state this afternoon. The place had only one other customer when we arrived, and a second couple came in after we were seated. Our waitress was nice and brought our drinks and took our orders. Never saw her again,an d another lady brought our food about 25 min later. My salad was good, but everyone else ordered hot food. NONE of it was hot. It was ALL cold, and a side order was missing. We figured they were under staffed today, and chose not to complain. Since I suggested this place, I was mortified by the service. And a meal of 4 for over $100, when 3 of the 4 meals were served ICE COLD is really unacceptable. I won't be back. And I could have complained and insisted on the food being hot, as cold gravy, catfish, chicken fried steak, green beans, Mac n cheese and brisket and onion rings is positively disgusting. Holy heck, what a charming little country cafe! Came here with car club friends on a recent weekend in east Texas. Our group was on the large size taking up an most of one of the dining rooms. Service was polite and drink refills flowed throughout the meal. Portions are HUGE! I ordered and enjoyed the blackened catfish with fried shrimp. Think there was some hushpuppies buried in the plate somewhere too. Sides were mashed potatoes with amazing brown gravy and fried okra. This for the small sum of $18.99; would have cost double that in a big city. The ladies at the table both enjoyed the black and blue salad. My buddy across the booth also enjoyed the catfish as I did. One of my dining buddies insisted I mention the creamy Cajun pasta dish with shrimp, chicken, and smoked sausage. Why 4 stars? Because this is a solid option in Montgomery. --- --- --- When we first moved to the area about three months ago, I bookmarked a lot of restaurants that I knew would be of interest. One of the things I looked for was places with great chicken fried steak and I believe Phil's was at the top of that list. CFS is the wife's favorite, and as they say, "good chicken fried steak, happy life". I myself ordered a prime rib sandwich, which I found to be very solid. Prime rib can vary quite a bit, so don't come expecting a high-quality, slow roasted piece of meat between two buns. This is more like above-average roast beef, but it was very enjoyable. I ordered it with onion rings as my side because they were commonly mentioned in reviews and I thought they were great - especially with that sauce. But back to the chicken fried steak - it resulted in a weird experience. We ordered two of them to-go and took them to my in-laws' house. Her parents shared one and my wife had one for herself, that she generously shared with me. Both of us had the same reaction: it was bland and could use more salt. But both of her parents thought it was amazing, as-is. Once I sprinkled some salt on top, it dramatically improved the flavor, in my opinion. It seemed to be of fairly high quality and it was enormous, I just wished there was a 10% uptick in salt without me having to add it myself. 4.2 stars I was in the mood for Texas bbq and was unsuccessful at the first place we went to due to the outside line that barely moved, just to attempt to go into the inside line that was barely moving...a half hour of my life that I will never get back. The next tiny place seemed like more of a Bible study group with zero ambiance and non existent service. We decided to give Phil's a try and it was a nice experience. My lady friend and I remarked a few times on how much of a sweetheart our server was. In fact, everyone here was really nice. I went with the 3 meat combo and loved the sliced brisket, really enjoyed the jalapeno cheese sausage, and liked the ribs even though I'm not crazy about spare ribs. The baked beans were fabulous but I found the cole slaw to be somewhat lacking in flavor. Overall, I would encourage you to give them a try and enjoy the food and friendly hometown feel. We've been going to Phil's since we moved to the area ~7 years ago. They have ALWAYS been solid. Phil's is definitely a roadhouse. Nothing fancy but it's always been clean & we are always seated quickly. Some cools things to read & look at on the walls. The service is always good. Personable & quick. Phil's is my go-to in the area for a chicken fried steak. It's the best representation of what I consider a great CFS. It's a great size, tender & the batter is delicious. Great cream gravy too. Recent visit. Portions were large and food was quite tasty. However, the 'add ons were ridiculous in our opinion. With a meal, there were 2 sides included. However, a small side salad was 4.99 extra! 1.99 is the top of what most restaurants of this caliber would charge. Secondly, with a large BBQ plate, there was only 1 small slice of onion and 2-3 very thin sliced of pickle. I asked for a few more thin slices of dill pickle and slicer two onion and was told that would be an additional charge as well.. there was not enough pickle and onion to go with a large meat barbecue meal to begin with, it was infuriating that with a meal that size that they could not have an adequate amount of onion and pickle along with the meal. because there was not an adequate amount of onion and pickle to begin with, I asked for one or two thin slices of onion, and one or two thin slices of pickle and I was told there would be an additional charge for this. it makes no sense because both orders had an adequate amount of meat and veggies . If you want to feel like you're back in Grandma's kitchen this is the place to go! My husband and I went to Phil's tonight with our 1 1/2 year old and had a great experience. We were greeted with friendly faces and everyone we met was polite, helpful, pleasant, and seemed to genuinely be happy to be there. Everything was clean and had a homey, comfortable feel. We had fried pickle spears and they were crisp and flavorful. I had a 10 oz beer and my husband had a 22 oz and the 10 oz was just the right size for me. My husband had the Elvis burger and fries and I had chicken fried chicken with macaroni and cheese and green beans and everything was hot, flavorful, and delicious. We shared a banana pudding for dessert and it reminded me of the one my mother makes, full of bananas, wafer cookies, and whipped cream. I could overhear people at other tables commenting on how good their food was. We can't wait to go back and try more! read more

Ok so this is some of the best food we have had in a while. Husband got brisket & ribs with coleslaw and potato salad. The seasoning on the meat was very flavorful. The meat on the ribs was so tender if fell right off. Brisket was a touch dry but the flavor made up for it. He enjoyed the sides, too. I had fried catfish and shrimp with mac n cheese & okra. (Obviously not the healthiest choices but we are vacationing so who cares, right?). The breading is a cornmeal base for the fried seafood. The difference between Phil's and every other place I've been to is they managed to make the breading light...it didn't have the corn meal heaviness I'm used to. It was fantastic. Okra was tasty and mac n cheese was pretty good. The star of my meal was the shrimp..so light and tender. Yum. We will eat here anytime we are in the area. The staff was friendly. Since it's not on the main road it's easy to overlook this location but you should definitely pop over if you're anywhere near town! They have wonderful service, I'm inviting atmosphere, true country food and portions, and some of the best sweet tea you will ever have! We've been regulars at Phli's for years, always finding it a great burger-and-fries spot but after last night, won't be returning any time soon. First, my husband ordered the mushroom/swiss burger without onions but with tomatoes and lettuce - when the waitress brought it, she immediately realized it had onions so took it back to replace. He ate the replacement burger but knew all they'd done is remove the onions because the taste saturated the sandwich. I normally enjoy the chicken wrap but wanted to try the "Double Decker Turkey Club" as a wrap, which the waitress assured me could be done. When she brought it, she explained that it was the last wrap so it had been made differently (not sure why?!?) Here's a picture of one half - I was able to eat the other by balancing/supporting it with both hands. When we asked for the ticket, several minutes later she came over with a square (or some other payment device) - I asked again for the bill and she said we'd get that after it was paid, then just told us the total charge. That seemed pretty strange and I was uncomfortable but went ahead and paid - then saw on the bill that we'd been charged $.75 each for the tomato and lettuce, despite the onion mixup.
