We chose BAR A barbecue after carefully looking for what we hoped would be the BEST in the Houston area. We saw some great options ( Truth, Triple J, Killen's, and Brisket & Rice were all in the running, and we didn't try any of those so can't say on them). This was a thought out choice and I was super excited to try them! Being a family run operation was really awesome to me as well. First the good to great: the staff was super nice and helpful. The brisket was ah-mazing. Not too Smokey but cooked very tender and delicious! The barbecue sauce was on point. Sauces tend to range from too thin to too thick, too sweet to too spicy but Bar A's hit the bulls eye! Not too thin, not too sweet...I really enjoyed the brisket! Walking up, the smells were incredible! A nice outdoor spot to eat (it was a very mild day and just beautiful out..but I digress). Also, the Mac and Cheese...oh my!! Some of the best I've ever had! The downside: We drove an hour and a half especially to eat here...it was our primary reason for heading up to Montgomery! Getting there around 3pm, you would figure is a sweet spot for a restaurant open from like 11-6 on a Friday. When we went to order as we're trying to figure out the plate we want, you know, 2 meats or 3 meats ...sides, yum, as you're drooling, we were going for the TRINITY Plate. Brisket, rib and sausage...a nice cross section. Nope, we can't do a TRINITY. we only have brisket and turkey left. I know a lot of people love turkey. I'm not one of them and my heart was set on Beef. So now we're on a 1 meat and two sides track I guess. Ok, can we do brisket on the one meat? "Sure I can do that" was the cheery reply. So we got two plates brisket, and I asked could you make that moist cut brisket (my favorite, while my wife always prefers the lean). "Nope, sorry, we're all out of moist brisket". Ok, so one plate with cheesy potato casserole (doesn't that just sound amazing?) and Mac & cheese and one plate With cheesy potato casserole and pinto beans, that way we can get more great tastes and share, right? Oh, and bread, pickles, onions and jalapeños. (The bread is Martins and is always amazing if you know what I'm talking about...I think it's potato roll bread?). Got our plates and start to pay...two $20 plates and no drinks, just water. Over $50! Hmmm, well, the one meat tray with brisket has a $4 up charge. Hmmm. Sat down and got to chowing down! Here's where disappointment sets in. As I said, brisket and sauce was on point. The onions are maybe slightly pickled, not sure, but also very good. The meat, was 3 slices of brisket...4 would have been a sweet spot but eh, 3. The sides. Cheesy potato casserole had the texture of rice...I kept thinking it was rice as I ate it. It had some spice to it but very little flavor. Very disappointing. Mac & cheese--ah-mazing! Pinto beans were like a salt-a-holics take on ranch style beans. Not good. Almost not edible. But I was hungry. I put some sauce on the potato casserole and made it taste ok...still couldn't get Over the rice texture (I'm not saying it had rice, but just had the texture of a rice pilaf ). Two pieces of great bread rounded it out! So overall, disappointed that there wasn't more to choose (ribs, moist brisket, sausage) and I get it, They make so much and sell out then that's good business for them. To the customer who drove and hour and a half to eat there, not so good business. The sides were 1 for 3 in the good to great category and worst of all, after spending $50+ on lunch for 2, I was still hungry. I wouldn't have expected that for sure. I couldn't decide between 3 or 4 star but my missing stars shake out like this: 1 went because of availability and then ultimately being up charged for what was left. Today we decided to try out Bar A BBQ and we were so glad we did! We decided to order by phone, very nice young man took my order and explained how pick up service works, and did it! When I pulled up to the restaurant there were about 30 people in line, which is a good indication of a great place. I park in the back like I was told went in the second door and everything was there waiting for me. We got Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Pork Ribs. They were grilled to perfection! Another Montgomery restaurant my friend told me about that I must visit. This one was listed as one of the top new BBQ restaurants in Texas by Texas Monthly, quite a feat of its own. They are located in a converted house about 2 blocks west of downtown and offer free beer in a cooler. There was no wait surprisingly when I arrived just as they opened. I tried their 2 meat plate which comes with 2 sides and a drink for $24. I chose mac n cheese and cheesy tater casserole. Mac n cheese - a little on the peppery side but good. When you bite into this, you taste the real cheese instead of processed like many Mac n cheeses. Cheesy potato casserole - like a cross between Mac n cheese and a loaded baked potato. It's good but I should have tried the beans to compliment the mac n cheese instead. Too many cheesy starchy items. Beef and garlic sausage - homemade, beefy, garlicky and peppery. This is a thick diameter sausage and I liked it. Brisket - I chose fatty and they ask every customer so you get exactly what you want evey time. It's smoky, tender and peppery. This is obviously prime brisket. Another very good example of prime brisket. Pickles, Onions, jalapeños and bread - they seem to pickle their own onions and pickles. They serve fresh sliced jalapeños and use Martin's potato bread for their complimentarybread slices. Each plate comes with 2 slices. Banana pudding- this one is not your traditional pudding, but in a good way. It comes with a unique topping that seems like pecan meal with mini chocolate chips...the pudding itself is silky smooth and tastes homemade. read more

We came at lunchtime for their Thursday special, a brisket smash burger. The service was friendly, helpful, and efficient. We ordered the combo which includes a brisket smash burger, a side, and a drink. The brisket smash burger is 2 smashed patties with a slice of American cheese on each patty served on a fresh bun. The pickles and pickled onions are on the side and thinly sliced. I enjoyed the pickles and onions with my burger. One of our sides was the dirty rice dressing and the other side was a tallow cookie, both options were delicious. The soft drink options are made with cane sugar and have a diet selection available. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available. The weather was perfect for being outdoors and most people were enjoying the outdoor seating. This wasn't our first time and it won't be our last. The meat is fantastic it a most go if you ever go though Montgomery. Me personally I want not a big fan of the sides. But my gf loved the sides and thought it was a wonderful add on. Service was quick and not faulty they have a good system. When I was in there I was able to talk to the owner and he was really nice to me and we both shared a laugh. It's located in a blue house near the brick buildings. There's plenty of outside seating although we chose to eat inside. You walk up to the counter and place your order. There's merch and even free beer! We got the 1 plate combo, Trinity plate and side of honey butter cornbread, cheesy tater casserole, brisket dirty rice, cowboy pinto beans and chips. Driving around Texas trying BBQ on the Texas Monthly Top 50 list. And Bar-A-BBQ was our 1st stop on a Saturday morning. We arrived at 10:45am just late enough to miss Saturday breakfast but early enough to be the first to get our choice of proteins yet too early for any of the sides. So, we got brisket which looked good and was moist to the bite. We also got both of the sausages which were dripping with delicious flavor on the tray and filled us with deliciousness. Although the cheese & jalapeño sausage was our favorite. We also got to taste the chicken which is the pit master's favorite protein and we can see why. The smoke was definitely on the skin, while the color was singing of deliciousness but the bite of chicken was the best bbq chicken I have tasted on this journey yet. Oh, let me tell you about the pickles and the onions they are pickled there on site and they look and taste best of best. Lots of parking here at Bar-A-BBQ. A smoky sunrise well spent in Montgomery. This weekend's BBQ quest took me to Bar-A BBQ in Montgomery, Texas, deep in the heart of smoked-meat country. I wasn't rolling with the Side Dish Queen this time, this was a lone wolf operation. Just me, the truck, and a fire in my belly for brisket. I arrived at 7:45 AM sharp, gunning to be first in line. Mission accomplished. The crew was still setting up, prepping the pits and stacking that legendary cooler full of free beer for the lunch crowd. By 8:00 AM, the doors swung open and the meat gods welcomed me inside. My targets were clear: Barbacoa tacos and a brisket klobasnek! Both came out piping hot, full of flavor, and perfectly portioned to kick off the day with a barbecue blessing. The brisket in that klobasnek was smoky, rich, and wrapped in soft, golden dough that held like a promise. Then came the tortillas. These were pillowy, thick-cut, golden-edged disks of handmade glory. Whoever was back there making those; you're a tortilla deity. I don't know your name, but I'll say grace in it next time I make tacos. The tacos got stacked with juicy barbacoa, onions, cilantro, and that green sauce, cool and zesty with just the right whisper of fire. A bite of that, and suddenly the sunrise hit different. I had a chance to chat with Pitmasters Caleb and Cooper, who were as humble as they were talented. Real-deal folks. You could tell they care about every detail, every tray, and every guest. After a quick thank you and some meat-fueled small talk, I got my 22nd stamp in the Texas Monthly Top 50 passport, grinned like a fool, and rolled on out before most folks even finished breakfast. 05/02/26: YUM-Had one 1.55-lb beef (brontosaurus) rib for $58 but OMG I would buy it again. Our total tab was $173 and had Beef Rib, 1-(trilogy plate, jalapeno cheese sausage, brisket, 1 rib w Mac-n-chs & rice casserole) and (1 meat plate turkey, 2 sides, tator tot casserole and beans) and "by the lb" 1 pork rib & brisket) and the cornbread was just flat out yummy dessert w/ butter and honey. I think it was Gary-employee said it's like tres leches but w Butter & Honey - perfect description! Waited an hour in line and got there just after 12pm. Was well worth it. If I could give Bar-A BBQ more than five stars, I would be out here throwing golden halos instead. The food is so divine it will make you hear angels sing -- and not the polite church-choir kind. I am talking full-on heavenly gospel with brisket as the lead soloist. Every bite feels like a spiritual awakening. The ribs fall off the bone like they are repenting for being attached in the first place. The sausage has just the right snap to remind you that joy still exists in this world. And then -- just when you think you have reached your limit -- they hit you with those chocolate chip cookies made with beef tallow. I am not sure what kind of wizardry that is, but they are rich, chewy, and so good they should come with a warning label for emotional attachment. If you leave Bar-A BBQ without smiling, checking for leftover sauce on your face, or considering writing them into your will, you did it wrong. The last couple years around the US, people have been recommending me @bar_a_bbq from PDX, Tampa, LA, and Kansas. It's been on my list, but havent been in Houston for a few yrs. The word on the street was so true. They put the smoke in Smoked Meats. Every meat has a wonderful punch of post oak. From the turkey to the sausages to the brisket. I swear even gnawing on the sparerib bones I could taste it. Maybe that was all in my brain but I'll stand by it. Not just smoke, all the meats had a perfect balance of salt and pepper. Not too salty, not too peppery, baby bear just right. The point felt like it started to melt in my hands (still kept its shape) and the rich buttery fatty flavor just infused into my soul. On the flat side, there was a more intense beefy flavor that balanced out with how fatty the point was. Probably one of my favorite briskets this year. The beef short rib was amazing with a dark bark. Possibly the best smoked beef rib I've had. (Granted I dont get beef ribs often since Im usually solo.) The cook was just perfect. Solidly holding its shape, but tender enough where I was able to pull the meat off with just my fork. Dont forget the cornbread pudding. Such a sweet treat. It was a little sweet for my Japanese taste, but for my raised-in-the-USA tongue, it was perfect. The chocolate with the cornbread melded together. Just bury me in this!!! OH! The pork belly!!! Skin-on pork belly, which I don't see often at TX BBQ joints, felt like I was in a Chinese market that speaks no English. How the pork skin shattered like glass with every bite I took. With every snap, crackle, and snap, I could hear the rice crispy elves getting jealous. Oh lol, I also had breakfast here. The breakfast taco was also a punch in the face with smoke. Perfect way to start the morning. And the brisket kolache was better than kolaches I've had at some specialty shops. The golden exterior with the filling inside. But if you only get one thing, make it the brisket burnt ends. They were absolutely awesome and I highly recommend them. The ribs were a bit too hammy for my personal taste, but that's a preference issue, as I prefer baby back ribs over the spare ribs they served. I tried two of their house-made sausages. The standard house sausage was pretty good, but the jalapeño and cheddar version was even better, adding a great kick of cheese and spice to their basic recipe. The sides were just as impressive as the meat. The dirty rice had some spice and was elevated with delicious shredded brisket mixed in. The cheesy tater casserole was fantastic--very cheesy with a nice peppery flavor and a great texture from the potatoes. For dessert, the cornbread bread pudding was an excellent choice. It was a gooey, decadent dessert with a perfect balance of cornbread and chocolate chips. We also grabbed a tallow chocolate chip cookie to go, saving it to savor later. So we get our food.. sans jalapeño. No flatware available....had to wait for the person to refill the plastic dispenser. Yes. They were busy... but by the time I could eat my food it was cold. The bar b q itself is good. Not each shattering but good. Employees are nice. Owner isn't. I suggest going down the road to the meating place bar b que. PRO TIP: On Saturdays, only breakfast is available before 10:45am so if you're going for lunch, show up at 10:30am. There was almost no line, and they don't play the "line game" to try and generate higher demand and increase the perceived value of their BBQ. I went for the brisket hoping their cold smoke technique would be a hit. What I had wasn't much smokier than other places and it was kinda salty (and I like extra salt on everything). Brisket also wasn't very tender and failed the 'pull test.' Overall, it was par for the course. I also went on Saturday for the beef rib. I was NOT disappointed - BEST BEEF RIB I'VE EVER HAD. Try all the sides - they're all good. They were out of macaroni & cheese. Weather was good and we sat outside underneath the shady pecan trees.
