Stopped in at Vernon's Kuntry Bar-B-Que to pick up something for dinner. When I got there the two ladies behind the counter were closing out their shift and asked me to wait. Pretty interesting place...a lot of memorabilia on the walls and the smell of BBQ was thick in the air. I finally got the ladies to recognize I was STILL there and waiting to order. Opted for the meat + two sides and selected the half-chicken with pinto beans and Mac & Cheese plus added a quarter pound of brisket. When I got home anticipation turned to disappointment when I sampled the meal. The best part of the meal was the Mac & Cheese, otherwise all I can say is thank goodness for BBQ sauce. The issues...smoked chicken was dry, the pinto beans just didn't taste good, and the brisket had zero flavor. So bottom line...I wasn't impressed and while it resembled "food" and was filling, it sure wasn't satisfying. read more

Great spot for lunch. Stopped here the other day while traveling thru Conroe. The girl behind the counter was supper helpful and made few recommendations. The two meat platter was generously portioned and came with two sides. The brisket was great but the ribs were extremely fatty. The coleslaw was very good and the fries were done just right. Had lunch here yesterday. The brisket was very dry and had no flavor; it seemed steamed and then sliced hot so all the juice leaked out. Honestly, it was among the worst brisket I've ever been served. The side salad that I ordered was about the amount of lettuce they'd put on a hamburger, and came out with brown wilty lettuce and a half slice of tomato. It was frankly insulting. This place used to be great, but has gone way downhill in recent years. I do not expect to return, since better options - like McDonald's - exist. read more

Wow, what a TERRIBLE change since the new owners took over. The brisket was grey, no smoke ring, no red in the center. The chicken was overcooked. The beans were "meh." The bread was great but it was Mrs. Baird's Texas Toast so yay for Mrs. Baird's and "yay" for someone at Vernon's for not cutting corners and using regular sliced bread or off-brand. The sliced sausage had to RECUT when we got home because it was cut like an accordion (not all the way through); however it is one of the stars on this review because it was tasty even though not presented properly. We placed a large to-go order three days in advance, arrived at 1:15 PM to pick up the order. The lady at the register says, "It says 1:30 PM pick up." Ohhhhh kaaaaayyyy. We finally were complete at 1:58 PM. Terrible service. Food quality WAY down. Went to visit my buddy in Texas and he suggested this place for BBQ. The food was delicious. The ribs had that delicious smoky flavor and wasn't dried out. The brisket was nice and tender where it just melts in your mouth. The sausage was good as well it being not too salty unlike other places. The lady taking our order was so nice and patient, my daughter had no idea what she wanted and don't have a voice right now. Best old school burger in Conroe! We both had the tiger cheeseburger (3/4lb), mine with bacon. Fresh ground beef cooked to order. Thick in the middle but tapered off, flat-ish edges with a little crisp, but not a smash burger. Bun was soft and fresh, ingredients were also fresh and came together nicely. I recommend John's onion rings... Thinly battered, crispy and very tasty. Good size indoor dining area with a big shaded patio out back with a big okay area for kids. I guess the best part of having a 30 minute wait for a to-go order called in a week earlier is the opportunity to listen to a half dozen other patrons complain about undercooked chicken, burned up fries, and a burger that looks like it was in the refrigerator four minutes ago. BBQ and burger places in this area are common as trees, so the only thing keeping Vernon's lights on is nostalgia and the hesitancy for their customer base to try something new. I am fully aware this place has been here since the dawn of time, but I was hoping that more competition nearby would raise the bar for them, not for them to dig a hole. I DO NOT EXPECT In TEXAS TO RECEIVE SUB-STANDARD BBQ. You're in TEXAS! Come on. There are at LEAST, 5 BBQ places within 5 miles of you, there is no room for so-so BBQ. My TEXAN wife's BBQ, puts the BBQ you gave me, TO SHAME. You know what? I got some time, I am going to help Vernon's get back on track -- When you take a Take-Out order: 1. Write down the order, from the person on the phone. 2. At the end of the order, REPEAT the order to the customer. 3. CONFIRM the TOTAL with the Customer. When FILLING the order, have the order IN FRONT of you. Place EACH ITEM, in the bag, that is associated with the ORDER and CHECK IT OFF THE ORDER. *Note: This is CHECK NUMBER ONE. When the customer comes in for Pick-up. DO NOT just point to a bunch of bags and say "Those are yours". You should: 1. Get the customer's order. 2. Check the bags to ensure the items match the order. THIS IS CHECK NUMBER TWO. Why? Here's why: The NUMBER ONE issue with Take Out/Drive Thru Orders is that they are WRONG. It takes 30 Seconds to check orders. At the same time, the customer is checking as well. This not only allows for the exactly right order to go out, but would allow the customer to add something else they may have forgotten. It also prevents food going out, that wasn't ordered. So those 30 seconds could actually make/save you money. I would NEVER let an order leave a restaurant without being DOUBLE-CHECKED by TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. You shouldn't either. One last thing... Have you ever asked yourself, how many people, like me, have come to your establishment, had an experience like mine, and just NEVER CAME BACK? No complaints, no fuss, just gave up after one experience? Well I will NEVER come back, but at least from me, you now know WHY. What's even WORSE, due to this experience, Vernon's Kuntry CATFISH, which I used to LOVE, I just can't go there with any confidence. And that, is a down right shame. This place was packed, and its a big restaurant. There was a 15-20 minute wait, which was about 10 minutes. Started off with Crab Cake appetizer, legit. I had the fried quail, OMG....fantastic. My date had popcorn shrimp and it was larger than other places I've tried. There were enough sides for two additional meals, no way we could finish all the food. Tasted just as good the second day reheating in the air fryer. The service was friendly, but a bit rushed as they were jammed packed. Worth the trip....next time I might get to the catfish. He was busy, efficent, very polite and cheerful. He was the only one at the front and multi tasked very well. He was helpful making menu suggestions. I told him I was going to tell management what a great job he is doing and he actually deserves a raise ( he's really hustling) then he told me he really likes his job! The brisket sandwich was awesome partly because they grill the bun to a brown crispy marvelous topper. Their onions are so so sweet they enhance the first bite even without sauce. Tea was brewed strong enough to hold its own with the bbq. Way to go Vernons! The sausage and ribs were perfect as were the potato salad and slaw. The Mac and cheese not so much. First time back to Vernon's BBQ in a couple of years and I loved it! This is legit barbecue, slow-smoked on a pit, with the requisite sides and dressings. What a great relief to rediscover this place after finding Rudy's to (still) be fake barbecue. I had the 3-meat platter with fatty brisket, pork ribs, and sausage, and ordered an extra side so I could try the cole slaw, potato salad, and beans. I had this order To Go and ate it at home. It was nicely packed, but I did have to ask for white bread and pickles and onions. The restaurant itself was hopping at 2pm on a Saturday, and there wasn't a mask in sight - not on the diners, those waiting for take-out, or any of the servers. Everything traveled well and tasted pretty much the same as it would have if I'd dined in. The ribs were nicely smoked, but I thought the rub was a little too heavy on both the salt and the pepper. The brisket was excellent, as was the sausage. All of the sides were good, if a little odd: the slaw was so moist as to be swimming, but still delicious. And, they don't offer regular baked beans but pinto beans. They were fine but I missed having good ol' baked beans with my Q. The total cost before tip came out just short of $20 including the upcharge for the third side. Fair enough considering quality and quantity. So far this is my maybe my favorite barbecue along 105, along with Yo Mama's in Montgomery. Yo Mama's is more authentic, but Vernon's restaurant is infinitely cleaner and more inviting. Now, if we could get Yo Mama's to do the smoking and serve it at Vernon's with Vernon's sides... Still, lots to like about both, take your pick. read more

We often eat at Vernon catfish kitchen, which is delicious! Today it was closed, so we came to Vernon's Kuntry BBQ. We thought it would be equally good. We were very wrong and very disappointed. We both ordered hamburgers and mine came out wrong twice. Even when it came out correct, I did not enjoy it. They grill the patties flat, well done, and quite dry even if you ask for medium. The french fries were crisp even though they came from previously frozen. We were the only customers for dine in, yet it took more than 30 minutes to make our hamburgers. They have a steady carry out business. The atmosphere is not what we were looking for. It is like a beer joint, with the bathrooms outside. As it was raining today, that was very uncomfortable to have the bathrooms outside. We did not enjoy the experience, do not recommend this place, and will not go back. read more

My husband and I both got the 3 meat plates, our intentions were to take our leftovers to eat for later back at our room. I got the brisket, turkey, chicken, okra, and Mac and cheese. The young lady that took our order was friendly, and patient as there was a lot to choose from. After receiving our food the serving portions were huge! Which was great for leftovers, right!? I was so excited until I bit into my food. Although it was tender, my brisket was dry and flavorless. The chicken tasted fair, but baked. The turkey was the winner of the day, what the other two meats lacked, it made up for it. My husband had brisket, ribs, sausage, with double beans. He only liked the sausage. We have said on numerous occasions, that beans in a BBQ facility should never be bland!
