This was in an old building that looked it used to be a home and maybe still is on the top floor. There were two different sections for hibachi and regular seating. The menu offered a wide range of items from specialty rolls to sashimi to bento boxes to hibachi. The service was appreciated as we sat at a hibachi table. It did take some time, however, to receive the check. I went with the hibachi chicken and steak ($36). It came with clear soup, salad, two pieces of shrimp, vegetables, fried rice, and noodles. All was good. I ordered the steak to be medium rare, but it came out medium. Other than that, all were seasoned like a traditional hibachi meal. I did like the yum yum sauce that was given too. Right off the bat, I don't recommend using apps like Uber eats for delivery unless you don't mind paying extra for your food. Partially it's Uber's fault but the prices set for food, should be controlled by the restaurant. I ordered the following: Miso Soup $5 Menu Price $4 Spicy Crab Roll x2 $16.00 Menu Price $7 each Spicy Crab Salad $10.00 Menu $8.00 Spicy Tuna Roll $9.00 Menu $8.00 Tropical Roll $16.00 Menu $14 Receipt showed $56.00 through Uber $70.96 The reason this is annoying because once you get your food and you look at the bag, its not worth the price. The salad was so tiny, but delicious. The spicy tuna and spicy crab was right up my alley but I have to agree with my girlfriend and say it was a little too spicy. I didn't mind the spice. The sushi wasn't bad at all. The prices are different from their menu vs using the app. I would be ok with this if Uber wasn't tacking on an additional $14.96 for taxes, fees, delivery charge. We were in the area and we got it delivered. It was a big group order of three, they were nice enough to label it for us. The rock shrimp appetizer sauce is so good! Yaki Soba was also good. Their hibachi rice was hard for some reason, 2/5. Hibachi noodle is fettuccine like, but good peppery seasoning, and the dark hibachi sauce is complimentarily well. I wished they had broccoli as their hibachi mix vegetables. However, the mushrooms were flavorful nd well enjoyed by us. Sushi was mid tier, not much flavor on the rice and dry. read more

This is my first negative review ever and I thought long and hard whether or not I should write this review. This has nothing to do about their food but on their customer service. We (myself, my husband and 2 small kids, age 2&5) were in the are around 5p and called to see if there was a wait for the hibachi grill. The lady over the phone said that "now" there isn't but later they were booked. I informed them I would be there in 10mins and she said OK. We get there and get seated right away, she did ask if we had a reservation and I clearly said no but I had called just before to confirm. No issues. They take our order and we are started with the soup, salad and drinks. Right before the chef comes out, one of the staff comes to us and tells us that we are seated in a reserved spot and that they made a mistake. She wanted to seat us in their dining area. We initially misunderstood her thinking she was asking us to move to the empty grill next to us so we agreed. She proceeded to take our soup bowls to the dining area without the grills. We stated we were there specifically for the grill as our kids love the show. We asked about the empty grill next to us and we asked about that and they said no. We declined their request to move and left. It was pretty disappointing that she wasn't able to accommodate us despite their error. It wasn't like they realized the mistake as soon as we walked in. It had to have been a good 20mins since we walked in and the chef was literally coming out with our food (along with the other party we were seated with who appeared to have been waiting for us to finish our starters). It was EXTREMELY poor customer service on the staff member in charge for doing what she did and frankly quite rude. I don't understand why they couldn't accommodate our request given their error. My son was sad he couldn't stay to watch the chef cook in front of us. We felt bad for him. read more

This SHOULD be a 5 star review. But another establishment blindly charging me to use a credit card. If I knew up front - maybe I'd bring cash. But it's not posted anywhere, and it's not on your website. We've been to Kiku many times. Had great sushi. Nice place. Gets a little loud when there's a hibachi birthday party, but that's fine. Charging 3.5% to use a credit card. Let me KNOW this is the case. Post it in your restaurants, on your websites if you think it's important to your business. Let me make the decision. OR - I'd really prefer that you build it into your price and take me out of it. But to spend $200 on sushi, and get hit for $7 bucks to pay... just is the most annoying thing. We came here for dinner around 7 on a Sunday, I was worried that they would be closing soon but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they stay open until 9pm. We were seated and made ourselves comfortable. I had already watched my team play earlier in the day but I was excited to see that they had a few nice TVs above the sushi bar showing the evening games, this was a big plus. The TVs were not blaringly in your face but in a good location where you could subtly check the score. The restaurant was very busy for a Sunday I thought but most of the tables were filled and there were two hibachi stations in full swing. It looked like a couple of groups were celebrating birthdays and it sounded like they were having a fun time. It made me want to try the hibachi next time. I ordered the veggie goyza soup and it was SO GOOD. It was very simple but had a very nice flavor to it, I am still thinking about this soup and can't wait to go back and have it again. We opted to share a few rolls and this was the way to go, I love trying a little bit of everything and Kiku had a very detailed variety of rolls to order. We split three rolls following our soups and it was the perfect amount of food. We were satisfied but of course not too full to order dessert! We each had an ice cream and I will say that it was good quality ice cream, very creamy and not too sweet, it was the perfect end to our meal. I have been telling all of my friends that I have tried a new sushi place that is tucked away but not too far out of the way. I can see Kiku becoming a regular spot for us now. Try it! read more

As a former sushi chef, I've noticed some of the fish they use are frozen prepacked. This is a Korean owned establishment. The sushi / hibachi chefs are korean and chinese. Rice is important when making sushi. Fish is almost same wherever you go as long as its fresh. Try going to a japanese restaurant and compare the sushi rice. You can tell the big difference. First time trying out this place, we did a delivery through grub hub, the whole online ordering process was done through Yelp, pretty easy to do. Ordered three types of sushi rolls, green dragon, Tarzan, and tropical roll. We didn't venture out to try the fancy rolls yet, try to be on the safe side with what we know, and the sushi were excellent! A bit on the pricy side but taste great. We also ordered Raman noodle as well, for $20 a bowel, it was really okay, nothing special, and not that plentiful, may be hungry if that's all you have. The meat is too fatty. One of the many things I love doing when I get a nice paycheck, is getting a bunch of friends and going to a nice hibachi. Especially this one in particular, Kiku makes some great food. The only problem is, the staff needs to be a lot friendlier because it's a drag trying to get a smile out of them or feel welcome. The place is actually very beautiful and the atmosphere is pretty nice as well. Nothing short of elegant and enticing. I always like walking in and out of the place because it's very eye catching. That's actually a big plus when I see that. Now the food is actually pretty pricey but it's pretty good and even though it's the standard, basic hibachi style of steak, shrimp, and chicken, with rice or noodles, it still leave a lasting impression on you; even a day later. The food always has good sauces, good sautéing and cooked very well and precisely. I never have had a bad dish and their dessert menu is small and simple but packs a punch with a delicious bite. If you want some good food, definitely check this place out. The aroma is very nice, the food is tasty, but it's a bummer that the staff just doesn't make you feel happy or have any smiles coming your way. I like my staff joking a hit and happy, but I guess some people and cultures are different. They seem to see you more as a $ sign than a customer/human BUT, the chefs are always fun and play along (whether it's a fake smile or not), so I completely appreciate and enjoy it, because I get some of them going. read more

Tonight our meat was so over cooked (ordered medium) and shrimp was so over cooked. They also messed up two sushi items - giving us cooked food instead of what we actually ordered. After getting home and unpacking the order, I called and explained i was given two items that we did not order and we were missing two items we did order. After being told I was being given to a manager three times after I said I wanted a credit for the food I did not receive, 30 mins later - the best they could offer was a $3.50 refund. Management and the chef have clearly changed. SUCH A SHAME! Used to be a great spot both with customer service and food. read more

I've been there many times over the years, despite the insane sound system level if there happened to be a birthday party, I liked their food. But since the pandemic I haven't gone out much, and this is the first indoor dining I had since reopening. Naturally, a lot of anticipation. But it turned to be a very disappointing experience. First I found out this is under new management since January 2021, so all new staff, menu may have changed as well, then the whole experience dealing with a poorly cooked entree totally soured my opinion of this place. A popular dish in many Japanese restaurants, I thought chicken teriyaki is impossible to mess up, yet that is precisely the case. It's a big piece of chicken breast that came out way too dry and even hard to chew. Not tender at all. My companion mentioned to me first, I tried it, had to agree that it was the worst chicken teriyaki I've ever had. Called over the waitress to express my disappointment very politely, she apologized profusely, but said the only thing she could do was to steam it (!!), Instead of offering a second chance of redoing the dish. All the while, her presumed manager, a middle-aged woman, stood over her shoulder without a word of apology or anything else. Waitress asked if we wanted anything else, we declined. So she removed the 1/10th consumed dish from the table. Then came the bill at the end, with that $18 still on it as if we had enjoyed it. What gall! I again called the waitress over politely explaining to her that it didn't meet my expectations, I.e. the proper way is to remove the item, as that is what a reputable restaurant should have done. She nodded, said she'll talk to her manager, then went to talk to the same woman, who looked askance at our table. Several minutes later she came back and said her manager could only give a 50% discount. I was displeased, but still very patiently explained to her why a diner would feel this way. Then she began what I believe was a relay of her manager's reasons, 1) manager has to draw a line if everyone complains about an entree (draw a line at what? I wasn't there to get a free meal, we hardly touched the poorly prepared dish); and 2) it's been ordered by a lot of people, none has complained (that may be so, but have they tasted this one they served? so shifting blame to the diner, essentially). This is quite appalling, insulting, and irresponsible of them not to look at their own reasons. Frankly, I don't understand their rationale, unless something else at play. Despite decent sushi and sashimi (which are the reason for the 1 star), the overall experience is lousy, looking over the reviews over the past several years, that bad attitude seemed to be a theme that the new owner inherited. I am surprised at the low reviews by many for Kiku. This is one of our friends' favorite places and I had sushi takeout from here some time ago that was quite good. Just recently, however, we went in for the first time to have some sit down hibachi and I selected the tuna with fried rice. Kiku is the main local Asian spot near my jersey office, so you can find me here for many a lunches. It never fails to satisfy any sushi cravings. Its always busy, but I've never had an issue with service or long waits. They are quick to ask what you want to drink/order though, so one might feel rushed if one doesn't already know what they want to eat (not a problem for me). Lunch menu choices are diverse and to-the-point. Miso soups are never too salty and the salad dressings are never too artificially tangy, both comes with most lunch combos. I love sashimi... but my biggest fear at any Japanese place is stinky fish. Never a problem here. And the portions and variety are perfect for me... so much nom! Sometimes I'll get a side of rice or a sushi roll for accompaniment. They used to have an excellent pineapple salmon appetizer that was such a fulfilling deliciousness... wish it wasn't discontinued :( read more

In agreement with a few people who commented below, the service was indeed inattentive, the parking lot was small and the food was, Meh. Granted I went on a Friday during lent and was unable to eat meat but the scallops/schrimp were decent. I must say this is the first time I have been to a BYO hibachi. For what we had and they served it was very, very expensive. Usually you get better soup, salad, rice AND noodles. Never been to a place where you had to choose between noodles/rice. My gf did have the Sushi which she enjoyed. The show was a typical hibachi show. Onions built like a volcano, the huge fire in the middle...yeah yeah... I must say my friend's birthday was why we went and we told them, they brought him ice cream and embarrassed the crap out of him. The best birthday celebration by a restaurant I have been too. So I came here because I read a number of review about how great the sushi is here. Being in NJ, I was really excited to try this place out with the boyfriend. Our meal was good, but boy were we surprised by how expensive everything was- for the quality! We were paying NY prices for NJ sushi. Meh. I got a few different spicy rolls and all of them came out so incredibly spicy that I took a few bites and couldn't handle anymore- and I eat burmese food!
