I took my daughter here for her birthday dinner. What I love about this place is that they clearly cater to their customers. From the moment you sit down, you feel like you are in someone's home, to share a meal. The ambience is warm and dimly lit and although the place is small, its super cozy. They also have cute little colored Post It note pads and Sharpie pens which allows their customers to write/draw whatever they want and stick it on the walls! I love that, it just goes to show how welcoming they are to their guests. The food was amazing! By far my favorite sushi spot so far in NJ! Every meal comes with a free sample of a special roll which is so nice and introduces you to new rolls you may not have tried. After your meal, you are offered a dessert on the house which is a flavored ice to share with you table. Its so yummy and refreshing and like the cherry on top to a perfect meal. It just makes the restaurant gloomy; not romantic. I used to order the Kiss of Fire roll, which was hands down the best sushi I ever had. I ordered it today and it was just lacking flavor. Mind you, I haven't been to this place in years but I just thought the quality would remain the same. I know times are hard now, so it's still nice they give stuff on the house. Food was okay. It's a trendy atmosphere with tiny post it notes in an array of colors stuck all over the walls. And tiny post it pads and pens at every table so that you can add your thoughts, sentiments or drawings and put them up on the walls too. So it's has a unique atmosphere, and is even a little charming. Be aware tough, that there is a very very limited menu. They have very few kinds of fish. I did enjoy the edamane, which I ordered because of the lack of a basic selection of fish regular sushi patrons have come to expect in a sushi restaurant. They have dumplings, and there are a few sushi items that they have their own way of preparing, and it makes the food fun. But fun does not necessarily mean good or great. Not bad though. Just okay tasting, but I suppose fun here has a high value, which lifted it's rating from a 2 star to a 3 star for me, as did the staff. I met 3 of tem. My waitress was a sweet HS or college girl. Really clueless about sushi outside the 4 walls of Kenko. But, nevertheless she tried so hard to please me and make me feel welcome. Bent over backwards to gave me tiny tastes of their homecrafted bubble tea. Talked me into tasting it. It was unique and pretty good. Turned me around on it. Helped me put a couple of grazing type items together so I could try to make a meal of it. Incidentally, the prices were fair and reasonable. When I asked about dessert the waitress said there was no dessert menu, but she brought me the finest shaved ice that I have ever have, flavored with mango. It was so so good, if only I could have had that as a main dish,) into wanted to order more, but since it was a gift from the kitchen I did not feel comfortable to ask for more. If it was a paid item that I had ordered, I most certainly would have ordered more!. It was the highlight of my visit to Kenko. So besides eating a bit of their take on sushi, in order to assuage my hunger I ordered the edamame and also some shrimp tempura. The breading or flakes etc on the tempura were dull tasting and not crispy. But it was good enough to help me cut my hunger. I had a long drive ahead of me. and had not eaten yet all day, so I made the best of it and enjoyed the place and staff, even if not the limited selection. I think what I enjoyed most about the place was the funky atmosphere, passionate staff and above all the shaved ice. I think for sushi newbies it's fun. Got it for takeout after a while, and they truly just don't disappoint! The presentation is great, the amount of food you get even better, and they provide you with even the miso soup, soy sauces, etc. to go as well! We placed the order through their app the day before because they do tend to sell out so I definitely recommend doing that. You will receive a notification to go pick it up, which was great, the people were super nice, and we even got a bubble tea on the house. They have a fairly okay place for dining, it is small and does get packed, but it still feels as if you're the only one there, considering how good care of you they take. read more

This was part of a mini strip mall. It was dark and small inside, but there was a lot of creativity along the walls with sticky notes from prior customers. The menu had a ton of specialty rolls along with some traditional ones too. The service was extremely friendly, and the food came out promptly. We ordered the love platter ($59.99). It came with five special rolls and two miso soups. We also added another traditional roll. My thoughts on the miso and rolls I had are below. There was a complimentary seared shrimp that was flavorful and cooked perfectly too. They also had a note on the menu that there were no sesame seeds or scallions on anything, which was odd. Everything appeared very fresh too. Miso Soup - This tasted different than other ones I have tasted, but still tasty with the little pieces of tofu present. Kenko Garden Roll - This came with avocado, cucumber, mango, salmon, whitefish, tuna, spinach, red onions, sweet chili, and a Japanese salad dressing. This was not bad. Most of these were on top of the actual roll. It was different with the red onion presence. Monster Roll - This was a shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, avocado, and crabmeat with spicy tuna, sesame oil, sweet chili, spicy mayo, teriyaki, and Korean hot sauce. This had a lot of sauces present, but they went well with one another. There was a ton of avocado too, which was perfectly ripe. Alaska - This simple roll with salmon, avocado, and cucumber was satisfying and paired well with the special rolls ordered. Irish Special - This had spicy salmon, cucumber, seaweed salad, crunchies, and teriyaki along with spicy mayo on top. I liked this except for the seaweed salad. I am not a huge fan of seaweed salad to begin with, but it was not needed. It was definitely interesting to see this present on a roll, but it did not get the job done for me. Sunny Roll - This had a soybean paper, salmon, avocado with salmon, avocado, and teriyaki along with a spicy mayo on top. This was my favorite tried. I liked the amount of salmon present along with the soybean paper wrap. Blue Hill - This had spicy tuna with seared white fish salad, crunchies with teriyaki, spicy mayo, and sweet chili on top. This was interesting because of the seared white fish salad. It had a smoky flavor to it, and I really enjoyed that with the sauces. It surpassed my expectations. For dessert, a complimentary shaved mango with whipped cream was served. I believe it was some type of mango anyway. It was a soothing and refreshing way to end the meal. Will I go back? Truly worth all the hype, and worth the incredibly long wait. Trust me (as a habitual liner hater lol) Their white seared tuna was the main event for sure, but all their rolls were unique and high quality. They even threw in free dessert and some extra rolls for good measure. Not sure if that was a common practice or due to the long wait, but it was more than welcomed! Their selection of rolls is impressive and they have a lot of specialty options. my advice for the sushi purists, stick to the classic regular rolls! the fish is fresh and they don't load the rolls up with rice. we felt that the specialty rolls were just too loaded with junk and crumbs and sauces. but if that is your thing then go wild here! spicy crunchy tuna roll was probably my favorite and the salmon was nice and fresh. there are a lot of reviews hyping the godzilla roll but i wouldn't recommend it. it's just a roll piled with a mound of kani and panko... and turned to an unappetizing brown mush. still though, quality and value is unmatched and this place is still our go to for stay at home sushi date night! read more

Me and friend decided to try Kenko. The pictures and reviews looked really good and it seems like a good value compared to other places. Fairly easy to get to and plenty of parking. Tables seem smaller and ideal for a part of 2-4. Not a lot of table space if you like to spread things out. Also the ambiance seems fun and casual with the post-it's and pics. The service is good and attentive. I ordered the spider and the Blue Ocean. I loved both rolls. They seem huge, the soft shell crab in the spider was meaty. I liked the seared white fish salad on the blue ocean. They also served us a complementary mango shaved ice for dessert. It was so good. I would definitely come back to Kenko. We have been coming to Kenko Sushi well over a decade, started going when it was at the old location. We would drive 40 minutes each way to enjoy the best sushi ever. Today was totally different. It seemed like the rolls were smaller. They used to give you a free roll, now it's just a piece or two depending i guess on how many people are at the table. The sushi now comes individually, plated on a lazy Susan. Were people complaining that the old sushi boards weren't hygienic? It just didn't seem the same. Less tobiko if any, NO wasabi came with the rolls, I guess you have to ask for that now? Now they scatter the plate with some kind of greenery. The flavors were still good, it just was disappointing and not the same quality as before. The staff was still attentive and friendly. My second time eating there. The first time was at another location. I really think they got better and better. First they have some pretty young people working there but they are extremely polite. There's a huge variety of rolls, raw, cooked whatever fancy you. I was very impressed with the presentation when we got our platter of sushi, I feel like it's top notch. It's not authentic Japanese style but everything looks and tastes good. Their seared fish sushi is excellent. We also got a soft shell crab roll which was excellent, fresh, crunchy and light. They also threw in some free sushi and mango shaved ice which was delicious. The decor is cute. They would also do a Polaroid picture for you and you can use post-it notes to leave a message on the wall, a nice way to leave a memory. I highly recommend getting there, combo rule, dogs, and ends up being well worth it, and you can try a lot of different ones. I tried takeout from here. The two rolls I ordered, which were among customer favorites, were honestly not impressive flavor-wise (to me). I'm not sure what all the high praise is about. Maybe it was an off day but that's just my two cents from a guy with a pretty well-calibrated palate (in my humble opinion). But anyway, the inside is very cute and has a calm vibe to it. Staff was quick & made no mistakes. I got the K4 combo and K4 combo set along with three single rolls. The amazing sweet potato tempura roll is a 10/10 recommend. The spicy lobster roll is also another fantastic roll. Everything tastes so fresh and well prepared. They also threw in three free pieces of sushi (Chef's Special) it was delicious!!!!!!!! Back for the first time since COVID and happy to see that Kenko has still got it! When we we arrived, we were immediately seated which was a relief considering how long it used to take to get a table. Kenko was as cute as always, but the new set-up includes a "booth" area walled off by separators, which added cozy vibes. Our K4 combo included complimentary miso soup, sushi, and dessert. We had the following rolls: *Salmon Tartare - Addition of red onion, basil & capers added an interesting European twist, but half of an avocado sliced on top was too much for me. *Devil's Ride - Great as always if not a little one note * Fantastic - Inside was supposed to be eel, cucumber, and avocado, but turned out to be mostly avocado. Perhaps they ran out of cucumber? * Loving You - Probably the most balanced roll, both in terms of flavor and proportion. Lemon added a nice zing. We've ordered these rolls in the past and found it to be very avocado heavy this time around. Next time, I'd seek out some rolls that didn't include any avocado at all to balance it out. For dessert, we received a mocha kakigori (shaved ice) to share. It's something we would not have thought to order, but really ended up liking! It was a light way to end the meal. Service was quick (almost too quick) the entire time. Our servers didn't bother us much after bringing out the food, but were extremely observant to any requests, which is exactly the way it should be. We played hooky on our usual sushi joint and tried this place because someone we know said it's so good, and the reviews here were good. That said now I'm a little surprised by all of the rave reviews. Don't get me wrong, the generally speaking sushi is fine, probably better than a lot of places. But once you get past the sauces - which are varied and unusual, the rolls themselves are nit very varied and they use cheap fish. Most of the rolls are shrimp, eel, or the fake crab leg (pollack) you get in California rolls. Then those basics are topped with varying sauces and supplemented with various vegetables or fillers (like spicy tuna) to create an array of roll choices. If you're not used to sushi places that do great signature rolls, then the notion of fancy combinations and sauces is appealing and special. But beyond that the rolls are smaller than signature rolls at other places, and they aren't well-rolled - they all fell apart once you lifted them. And as I said there isn't a large selection of fresh fish to choose from like other places that are in the same price range although perhaps a drive. Also wasn't thrilled with the spicy tuna - it lacked flavor relative to our usual place. All in all, it's okay, but given the choice we would choose our usual place over this one. read more

We ordered the love platter with 2 miso soups and boy was it a lot of food. They have such a big variety of special rolls, it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the choices. We ordered godzilla, heartbreaker, pink dragon, devil's ride and calamari. Our favorites were definitely the Godzilla with all that amazing crunchy goodness on top and the calamari. The devil's ride and calamari was also good. However we didn't enjoy the heartbreaker. The spicy mayo actually has a kick to it for those who enjoy it. Although I do have a low spice tolerance. They also included a chef's special roll which was some type of seared roll which was so good. Definitely recommend this place. Also props to them for actually labeling everything! read more

I think they accept dine in again, but my review is only about their takeout! I believe you have to order on their app, website, or in person. But the app and website is fairly easy to navigate. This may very well get drowned out in the chorus of voices here, but Kenko Sushi is without a doubt the best sushi I've ever had, and it's not close. I've been here or ordered from them over 50 times at this point - every single order has been perfect, every experience amazing. The consistency is just mouth-dropping. One of my chums and I accidentally discovered this place a couple of years ago when it was at its old location around the corner on Main Street and started coming by often after that. The downside was that that particular space was pretty small and they don't take reservations, so you were basically at the mercy of local customer traffic. If you came at dinnertime, it wasn't unusual to have a 45-minute wait, and we'd usually do it, along with hordes of other people. It's that good. The new location has a bigger space that we visited a few times prior to COVID, and I recall the wait times weren't as much of an issue. Every roll I've ever had here has been great. I suspect a lot of people are going to highlight the Godzilla Roll, which is delicious but a TON of food. I love it but I won't order it unless I've spent an hour on an elliptical within the prior 12 hours. Even then, you'll likely be stuffed. And the presentation value of this roll and frankly any of the special rolls is just top notch. My most recent to-go order was (and always is) a K4 Combo, which is a great value - it's two giant special rolls for about $19. You can easily find a nearby sushi restaurant that's selling ONE special roll for close to that. Kenko also throws in a few pieces of another roll gratis, so you're getting tons of quality sushi for that money. I selected the Devil's Ride, which has seared salmon, and the Amazing Sweet Potato Tempura. Both are long-time favorites of mine, both are scrumptious. Frankly, the only downside of late is that Kenko has been super skittery about COVID so they're only handling takeout orders for the foreseeable future, and those orders are exclusively processed through their app. The first time I used it was a little bit of a hassle, but it's pretty easy to figure out after a few minutes of tinkering. Also, the sit-down service involves a free dessert (so much free stuff here, it's amazing), a fish-shaped ice cream dish with vanilla ice cream and a thin chocolate syrup layer that's the perfect palate cleanser, so I hope our return to quasi-normalcy happens sooner rather than later. If you're thinking about opening up a sushi restaurant within 10 miles of this place, reconsider. Trust me. read more

We really enjoyed the food here... my favorite place for sushi rolls in NJ so far. First of all, the prices were really reasonable. If you get combos (I think either 2, 5 or 7 rolls), it works out to be about $10 a roll, which is less than at basically other place that I've been too. And these are not small rolls... most of them came packed with various toppings so they were fairly substantial. 2 per person ended up being too much food. On top of that, each roll that we ordered tasted really good. Usually at these places, there ends up being 1 or 2 rolls that are medicore, but not the case here (we could have just got lucky with ordering). The rolls that we tried were all fairly unique compared to other local places. I did have 2 complaints: -right now (covid) they are ONLY taking orders via the app, so you have to download that. No phone orders, website orders, etc. Seems unnecessary (at least offer online orders) -they don't pick up the phone. I had a question and tried to call but got a message saying to email. That's okay I guess if I got a prompt reply, but the reply took a few hours. read more
