This is such a hidden gem in Sunnyvale. They have updated interior so it's very modern inside. I got seated quickly even on a Saturday afternoon. I went crazy and ordered a flight of cocktails and their milk and cereal cocktail. All 10/10 drinks in my eyes. The blueberry stuffed French toast was 10/10 the star of this meal. I went this morning with a work colleague. She had the combo plate with French toast (sliced bananas) and she had eggs with cheese and potatoes with a hot chocolate. I had the 3 egg southwest omelette and had a cappuccino. I liked the jalapeños were diced into squares and they did not skimp out on them. Truly, our food was delicious. The noise level was low and definitely a good choice. I was surprised that the smell was not over powered by the cooking smells as we were sitting next to the kitchen and I did not smell the food cooking while we sat. I was curious about Keke's due to the ads, but after this experience, I don't see a reason to return. I acknowledge that weekend brunch is a busy time, but to simply get a seat for 1 at the bar still took too long. I was told to wait nearby and I just awkwardly stood for ~10 minutes for someone to clean & prep my seat. I started with a Coconut Latte, and it was okay. The foam & sweetness were fine, but the coconut flavor & espresso were average. Then for my main, I had a Florida Waffle. They have their own garage for parking and everything about the building conveys modernity, clean and trendy. Sizewise, it's like an iHop - a much bigger space than I expected. There's a separate Coffee Bar if you just want to come in for espresso or a cappuccino. The two-sided menu offers many choices for Breakfast and Lunch. Florida Waffle - Nice sized, crunchy and soft on the inside. They decorate the top with plenty of banana slices, strawberries (out of season, but what the hey), and blueberries. I'm not sure where the whipped cream went, but I can do without it. I like the syrup in a squeeze bottle - it comes out cleaner and doesn't make a mess. 3-egg Scramble There's so many choices that it's hard to decide so I ended up customizing a 3 egg scramble with ham and cheddar cheese. I dunno, but it was rather flat, meaning, a tad overcooked and stale. Maybe I should have added veggies or mushrooms, but it was relatively bland in taste. Choulula helped with that. The dish comes with choice of toast and grits. The service ranges from total ambivalence to a complete disappearing act. It took a while to get our order in and even longer to get someone to bring our check at the end. Our server definitely looked like he wanted to be anywhere else and never asked if we needed anything else, or a refill on water or coffee. Basics, yet not achieved. Disappointing. We were in the Sunnyvale area for my husband's work project. Decided to look on Yelp for a breakfast place that was open early. There weren't very many and Keke's was the closest, so we headed there. It was a little hard to find until we actually drove past the restaurant. At first we weren't sure where to park (there didn't seem to be any street parking) but then realized they have their own little parking garage next door, which was convenient. We were excited to try a new breakfast spot and were impressed with how new and modern everything looked. There wasn't anyone at the front counter when we walked in but after a short wait, we were greeted by an employee who escorted us to a nice window booth. The table and booth felt very clean and new. Menus were lovely and seemed to have a wide selection of options for everyone. After a short delay, a server came over and apologized, saying she was all alone. Guess they were short staffed. We didn't notice anything until our ice waters came a bit later than normal. Then we soon realized the wait was taking quite a bit longer than is normal for a breakfast cafe on a weekday. There were a few tables but it didn't seem very crowded. When the plates were brought to our table, first thing I noticed was how burnt the toast was. Not the best first impression. But I figured I probably wasn't going to have the toast anyways. We had both ordered omelettes and my husband commented that the egg seemed really dry. I agreed. In the center of my cheesesteak omelette, I noticed the cheese they used seemed really waxy. Reminded me of when I was a kid and Mom would buy those individually wrapped cheese slices. Yuck. I didn't think people ate that as grown ups. I've never been to a restaurant that used processed cheese in their omelettes. Ugh, the waxy cheese was not my taste. It almost felt like they were trying to cut costs by using the processed cheese instead of sliced or shredded provolone or cheddar, which would have a totally different taste and consistency. For a $20 omelette, I expected more. Sourdough bread (which was one of the options our server named off for bread choices) was an extra 50 cents, but that was not told to us until we saw the additional charge on the bill. New to the area and Kekes popped up right after The original pancake house. I'm so happy we chose Keke's. Our waitress was Mary and she was funny and had a great personality. The food was so good my plate was empty. She asked "you didn't like it" because it was all gone! lol just her sense of humor was great. Super clean place, great prices for amazing quality of food. I should have known better than to only look at Google reviews (as they have a 4.5 rating on Google). My mistake. FOOD: Ordered the "Florida" waffles (with the server suggesting ordering a side of pancakes as it is presumably "award winning"). Also ordered a side of grilled ham steak but thankfully that was forgotten. Brownie points for using all fresh fruit (banana, blueberry, and strawberry) and not adding or resorting to jams and fruit flavored sauces / syrups. The waffle and pancake were just "meh" and fairly standard. SERVICE: YES OMG SERVICE IS EXCEPTIONALLY SLOW. Like why?? (I mean I guess if you move slower, you make more dollars per hour from doing less and exerting less energy?) There were 4 visible servers and an empty cafe. We literally had to beg them to come (every. single. time.) and when this happened, they would just pass it on to the next server. Additionally, communication is rough. We had a male server who was explaining how there will be 3 waffles. We should not have asked how good their pancakes are since they were like "I'll add 1 pancake to your waffles plate for an additional $6.99 (thinking as if it'll come together all on one plate) and you can try it yourselves to see if you like it that way you get both." Then, we asked to add a side of ham steak for a bit of savory. I tripled confirmed the ham steak with the server and he responded, "Yes, yes, yes ham steak." No ham steak given or added on the bill/check which we were happy for anyways... no explanations such as no longer available, etc provided by the server; therefore assumed simply forgotten. Great for large groups who need a place to chat since they take forever. Located beneath an apartment complex. Final Thoughts: 2.00/5.0 It's rare that my friends and I get to go out for brunch because our schedules never align. Today was an exception and we were able to go get some brunch today. This brunch kind of did turn into a late lunch and I'm wondering if this experience would have been better had we come a little earlier. The combination of the muffin, protein, poached egg, and hollandaise sauce is such a good commination for me. The eggs benedict that I got here was a little underwhelming. Upon arrival to the table, the plate just looked sad... Perhaps the plate was just so plain that it made the overall dish itself look very...small and messy. Presentation is a bit haphazard. Starting with the eggs benedict, they were quite underwhelming. The food itself seemed just warm. It didn't feel like any of it was fresh or hot. Even if it was, it seems to have been sitting there for a hot second instead. The muffin felt rubbery and not toasted at all. It lacks a lot of the texture component for me. Second, my poor egg. It was overcooked just ever so slightly and became a jammy egg versus a poached egg. This was the case for my friend's eggs too. Flavor of the hollandaise sauce was alright. They provide home friends and I truly do not like my fries like this at all. I will typically go for a hash(brown) or fries. It's the ratio of potato/starch to crisp for me. This had zero of the crisp and just all potato. Perhaps this is just a preference because I'm sure someone will like these types of potatoes. I'm just more of a fried potato kind of girlie. Not a fan of the upcharge for this side dish though. Of note, it does seem to be more convenient to provided these kinds of potatoes as the side versus offering alternatives as that can take more time. Side Note: My friend chose a cheese steak panini and it looked good. What takes away from this dish seems to be the chips. These chips looked like they came straight out of a potato chip bag. Now, they were still crispy, so it means the freshness is there. Definitely cannot see these being chips made and fried in-house because they did not that have oil or greasy to it and they were heavily seasoned. Not the kind of salt and seasoning you craft by hand either, but more of the ones you taste in a store-bought chip bag. --------- Quality: Just warm The food felt like it was just warm and not really made to order. Perhaps if it were, it may have been a little hotter than the plate of food that I got. There was also just no texture to be found in my dish anywhere which is a big miss for me. This may have been because we did come a little later during their opening hours. Can't say that's an excuse though, but perhaps it may have been better had we come at an earlier time. Price: Ehh.. For the items we got, I really would not have paid what I did. The price will range from about $15 to $18 depending on what you get. That would typically be normal, but some of the plates just look small. Personally, I really wanted the chicken and waffles and sandwiches too, but opted out of that one because of the pictures I saw on Yelp. For the sides, I did mention that I preferred fries over the home fries and I could have gotten that, but the upcharge of $4 was not it for me. I would say consistently delicious and comforting! It's nice having a local brunch place that can offer a variety of omelette, sandwiches, scramble, combos, waffles, and pancakes. I would say their pancakes are their signature dish. I mean it's fluffy, bottom is crispy, vanilla forward, sweet yet light. It's the best comfort meal ever. My go to dishes are Cheesesteak omelette with extra crispy home fries or the Pancake Kekes Combo with sausage. You can never go wrong with these dishes. The cheesesteaks omelette is stuffed with steak and cheese. I love how large the portion are here so I can take leftovers home for later. Also for $3 I got the ultimate coffee with free refills so that always wakes me up! Cute cafe in the sunnyvale area. I've passed by this place multiple times, so finally decided to try it! The retail parking attached to the building could get full quickly during brunch time. There was a 30 minute wait to be seated, so my friend and I just chilled outside. I got the cafe combo which allowed me to choose either 1 pancake or 1 french toast with a side of eggs, fries, grits, or toast, and another side of bacon, sausage, hamsteak, or tomato slices. I got the french toast combo with grits, and hamsteak to switch things up, but I didn't really end up liking their grits (this was on me...) and the hamsteak was ok. I probably should've gotten the egg with bacon or sausage instead. Also got a lavender lemonade mocktail because it just sounded so good haha. The number of customers walking out due to the excessive wait times is honestly surprising. Parking is very limited, and there's barely any space to comfortably wait outside. What's most disappointing is that they removed their online waitlist system, which used to make visits much more manageable. Now, I have to drive all the way there, struggle with parking, only to be told the wait is over an hour. That's just not worth it. I used to really enjoy this place, but the lack of convenience has made it hard to justify coming back. I hope they reconsider bringing the waitlist back as it made a huge difference. read more
