Me and my girlfriend went to have lunch here, the service was excellent, the owners were really nice to me, and my girlfriend, the food was to die for, and the ambience was very calm enough for me and my girlfriend to eat our food in peace. Kazoku is hard to review, because we had a weird experience there. I'll start by saying that we will most likely go back, because there were enough positives to merit another trip. First, parking. It's a hard place to find a spot. We ended up parking next door at the dispensary, hoping we weren't going to get towed. Then, we went inside, and nobody so much as made eye contact with us for the first 5 minutes or so. We could see they were maintaining social distancing by keeping empty tables between occupied ones, but it seemed like there were a few tables our party of 4 could have utilized as soon as we walked in. Eventually the hostess gestured to a table for us. We were seated at a table without a cloth on it. There was some bizarre vinyl (?) covering on it that made everything stick to it. Every time I picked up my glass there was a kind of sickening slurping sound and the whole thing lifted away from the table with the glass. I assume it was clean, because it seems like a clean restaurant, but that table covering just made me feel like I was sitting at a table where a toddler with a lollipop had been sitting before me. All of the food was good, and the service was friendly, once we were seated. However, one of the items we ordered was never received. And all of the salads and apps came out after the sushi and sashimi. I understand for items like the green mussels, which are baked, but side salad? Seaweed salad? We ordered a 12 pc sashimi, and a few of the slices of fish were still slightly frozen. I guess that's better than the alternative. Also, two of us ordered iced green tea and two had water. None of our beverages were refilled even once until we were finished eating and I requested refills. They then refilled the two teas but not the waters. Like I said above, we'll more than likely try Kazoku again. Hopefully we get a table cloth next time! read more

NEVER AGAIN!! Called and made a reservation for 6pm for two. Arrived on time and was seated at a disgusting and sticky table (that had been wiped). That should have been our warning to RUN! We ordered Sake and beer and placed our food order. We only saw one chef making rolls and food. Our waitress was frantically running around. She appeared to be newly hired and a fish out of water. So we drank and waited... and waited... and waited. We noticed after about 30 minutes that the other 3 tables in our section were all waiting for food as well. Some food came to their tables, not large orders and at different times... so they couldnt even eat together!! After 30 more minutes (YES! 1hour wait and WITH a reservation!) I went up to the chef and he hadnt even started our order. He was actually putting food into styrofoam containers for TAKE OUT !! We asked for the check for our one beer $8 and Sake $8 and left. This place is a JOKE. You have been warned. read more

First, let me say that I come here way too often. It is by far my favorite sushi place in Tucson. I haven't been in while due to my husband's new gluten allergy diagnosis. Gluten-free review: Before going, I called the restaurant to see what types of accomodations they make for gluten allergies, and they were super knowledgeable. They explained every way they prepare items and when I asked questions about ingredients, they took time to read over labels. They never seemed annoyed or in a hurry. Because this is a new gluten allergy, we weren't sure how well they prevented cross contamination, but we were adamant to keep going. When we arrived, we explained the gluten allergy, and I was extremely impressed how knowledgeable the wait staff was. Everyone that we asked knew which ingredients to avoid (imitation crab, tempura, etc), how to make the roll gluten free, and made sure we were happy with everything. They even provide a separate gf soy sauce option for you (and their spicy mayo is only mayo and siracha! Score!) For those who have a gluten allergy or celiac, just beware that their rice is made with a vinegar mix that has glutamate, but that should be gf. The rice itself doesn't have soy. I will definitely be going back. Some of my favorites- nigiri (always fresh!), Mt fuji roll (amazing with smoked fish flakes!), and Mt halla (just check ingredients)! Just steer clear of imitation crab and tempura, and you should be okay! Be sure the soy sauce is left off, too. So delicious. I normally wouldn't drive all the way into Tucson for sushi, but i'm glad I did. Kazoku seems like a family place. The first thing that struck me was warm hospitality. Very friendly. The decor is authentic Japanese. I sat at the sushi bar. I ordered a sushi/sashimi combo, salmon skin hand roll, and ama ebi, the raw sweet shrimp served with the deep fried heads. Nice menu selection: salads, soups, Korean, Japanese, specialty rolls, sushi, sashimi, liquor etc. I ordered a few rolls, All Star salad (spicy tuna, crab, another fish on top of cucumber salad). Came out in an attractive small bowl for $10. I was disappointed. Ordered some sashimi: albacore and mackerel. I did find it on the tiny plate. Ok. So when I get small portions I am ok as long as the preparation is special. For the salad, I thought the cucumber dressing was too much and there was not much flavor over all. The albacore was prepared nicely. Some seasoning on the fish which did help accentuate the flavor. It was simple and good!!!! The mackerel...well not much. Relied on the natural flavor. Cruising down Speedway, you can easily miss this quaint building. Decades ago, before it became a Japanese restaurant, I remember this was an old Asian import store. Food 5/5: I have been here twice and both times my meals were very good. I tried the grilled teriyaki shrimp, sashimi, udon, and an assortment of sushi. I love how they offer plum ice cream at the end of your meal. Atmosphere/Vibe 4/5: Both times I've been here, there weren't a lot of patrons here. It's quiet and cozy. I used to be a fan of this place until it went under new management. The fish did not taste fresh and the rice in the sushi was not cooked properly and had dry bits in the center. They're severely understaffed and the service was terrible. It took an hour for the food to come out and our drinks were not ever refilled. We ordered udon at the beginning and whereas the other sushi came out after an hour of waiting, the udon never came out. After an hour and half of waiting, we canceled the last order and left. Surprise! This sushi was FANTASTIC (or dare I say, FINtastic). That's right, in a run-down part of Tucson. Talk about a diamond in the rough... The restaurant is a bit dated, sure. But it had that "mom and pop" charm and felt like we were about to get served some authentic sushi. We ordered a few nigiris and soon after received complimentary bowls of miso soup to start. Nice! The fish was really great- high quality, fresh, perfect temperature; sitting atop just the right amount of sushi rice that was nicely cooked and had just the right hint of sweetness. The specials board for the day featured salmon belly AND hamachi belly!!! Give me all the bellies! Both were perfectly fresh, fatty, and so delicious. The hand rolls did not disappoint either and if I wasn't already filled to the gills, I would've easily had 10 more. Everything was as good as we'd hoped (if not better)! Really wanting some sushi, and not normally being in this area ... I found three choices within walking distance of my car being serviced and landed here due to the reviews. We walked in about 3PM so it was not busy at all. They had a nice table set right in front with hand sanitizer, etc. which was a great sign in my eyes. There was a man behind the sushi bar and a woman managing the dining area, they waved us to sit wherever the tables were set for diners. They are still practicing adapted occupancy.. another great sign. The woman was really sweet and very attentive during our entire time there. We ordered some sushi rolls, tempura and spring rolls. It's small and not the prettiest building in the outside but don't let that fool you. It's a family run business from What I could tell and very cute and clean inside. We really like the food here but the service is consistently underwhelming. They tend to be under staffed and are not attentive. The worst was Valentine's Day. We did receive our appetizers and sushi but never received our soup or drinks. We asked the waiter multiple times for our drinks, to no avail. It's sad when the head sushi chef has to make the dinner and carry it out to the tables himself and even seat guests ! When we paid up front (didn't have all night to wait for them to get the check from our table) we mentioned this and they did not apologize or offer any remediation. Kazoku is one of our favorites for Japanese food to-go in COVID times! Easy to order for pickup or delivery, and the food is always tasty and satisfying. We haven't tried much of their sushi because nothing beats dine-in sushi, but have enjoyed their noodle entree and appetizer options. The miso soup is delicious and stays warm without needing to be reheated upon delivery. The tempura (shrimp and vegetable) is usually very lightly breaded and not too oily or heavy. The Las Vegas roll is pretty average but still delicious if you're in the mood for a fried roll. My husband has had the nabeyaki and tempura udon - he enjoyed both but prefers the tempura; it also stays warm and doesn't need reheating either. I tried several vegetarian items. I had the vegetarian bento lunch, which came with tempura, plain rice, edamame, a vegetable sushi roll, and a tiny bit of salad. I also ordered additional vegetarian sushi of the Y sushi roll and another vegetable sushi roll (as with most places in Tucson, there aren't a lot of vegetarian options here). The vegetable tempura was very good, with the vegetables cooked well and tasty. The salad needs a better dressing, and the plain rice would be better dressed with some furakake seasoning for flavor. The place is very clean and the staff is friendly. I ordered the crab puffs, gyoza, and beef bulgogi and it was very delicious! The only thing I didn't like was that our waitress wasn't very attentive after our food was given to us.
