It was super convenient being able to order takeout and Katz's got our food ready and passed on to delivery quickly. We ordered the Klub sandwich and Empire BBQ burger, which weren't anything amazing but both tasty and filling. We topped the meal off with the NY cheesecake and it was delicious! The serving sizes here are so big. I got a shrimp sandwich not thinking too much of it. But when it came out, I was so surprised to see how stuffed this sandwich was. It was so good and it made me so full. I also got to try their onion rings and I loved how crispy and crunchy they were. For dessert, something unique caught my attention and I had to try it. Alright, so I've been going to Katz's since 2008 when I was in college. Decent enough food. Good enough since it's always open. We ordered the stuffed jalapeños, carrot cake, and some cocktails. The jalapeños were fine, obviously you got them out of a bag but cool. The carrot cake was okay. Extremely cold, like just got defrosted, but fine. But the cocktails? OMG - HELL naw! Pure ethanol with a dash of drink mix. Truly ATROCIOUS beverages, couldn't even finish an 8th of them. The service was fine and the ambiance is very kitschy which is again, whatever, but damn if everything is going to be barely passable, you can't afford to have drinks we can't swallow. Best things....its 24/7 and the Broadway Breakfast Deal. I either come here for the breakfast or crazy super late/early after a night playing around Montrose. Warning, things can get a bit...heckit, crazy and weird after hours as you can imagine when you mix a bunch of drunk people together. Anyhoo, onto the food. I've had some good & bad meals here, mainly their sandwiches have been hit or miss with me only because I have had some super fatty meat sandwiches. It's only served from 6a - 10:30a I think so come early, You get to choose any 4 items (provided on the list) for like $8.49...it's a great deal!!! Huge cinnamon rolls, yummy bagels and potato pancakes (think crispy hashbrowns), spicy fire dogs, eggs, etc....... Oh, and I'm NOT a fan of their $9 Holy Mary Bloody Mary. I've ordered it twice and pawned it off on someone else both times. Now, I friggin' LOVE Bloody Marys but this one has like waaaaaaaaaay to much horseradish and crushed garlic in it. I KNOW, you are prolly thinking "WTF is wrong with you Brittany, that sounds delicious!!!" and I normally would agree with you but for me, it just doesn't work here. They also sell like huge pieces of cakes and desserts but since I'm not a sweets person, I've never tried any but My friend has ordered their "Cheesecake Shake" where she told me they blend an entire piece of cheesecake into a milkshake. A good place to go after going out or your just out late. I got the Philly cheesesteak, it was good second best I've had so far. They offer three sizes skinny, Klassic and New York, I got the Klassic. I also got the homemade chips with it and I wasn't really a fan. Really wanted to try the Matz soup but they were out, which I don't understand with the establishment being 24 hours, why aren't you cooking more? Definitely over priced food here, we got as an appetizer the chili cheese fries, and main courses the monte cristo, Philly cheesesteak and the chicken parm. The chili cheese fries were definitely too small of a portion for the price. Monte cristo was actually very good and was probably the best thing we had. I was very surprised that the cheesesteak did not come with fries atleast. The chicken parm was definitely fried way too long and the noodles were very stale. Our waiter wasn't too great either. We waited a very long time for refills and when we received the check we were charged for the wrong items and it took forever the get the corrected check. My favorite is the matzo ball soup, and my partners favorite is either the French dip or the corn chowder which is only served on I believe Wednesday. They also have great dessert. 02/06/18 - Initial Review Katz's Deli and Bar has had many reviews to date; well over 600 at the time I'm writing mine. The consensus of opinion is three stars, which is an accurate reflection of how "average" this venue is in terms of food, service, and ambiance. The cool thing about Katz's is the fact they are open 24 hours a day. I've dined at Katz's several times and on each occasion have found the experience unremarkable. I've ordered omelettes and egg breakfasts for the most part. I've experienced long waits in getting seated on each occasion; table service has been less than optimum in terms of efficiency although my servers have all been friendly and personable people. The meals (based upon my experiences) have been decent, yet not noteworthy. Katz's is pricey so keep that in mind if you're on a budget. 4/23/18 - Update # 1 I had occasion to return to Katz's Deli with a friend. We arrived around 11:00 pm and the restaurant was busy. Thankfully there were a few open seats at the bar allowing us to get served fairly quickly. Our bartender/server was great. He was efficient and friendly making sure our waters were constantly topped off as well as my coffee; these are little touches which are important when it comes to service. We ordered the chicken parmigiana and the Cobb salad. Both meals were excellent. The chicken dish was extremely filling; I could only eat half. Such was the case with my friend's Cobb salad. Pastrami was sooooo chewy and there was waaaaay too much cheese on the sandwich. I love cheese but this was over board. The restaurant was half empty yet it took forever to fix the mistakes they made on the order. Dropped off my onion rings with no ketchup. When asked if I needed anything I said ketchup. I was told it would be right out. After several minutes I just asked another waiter in a different section. My sisters sandwich came with only meat, cheese lettuce and tomato. Mayo and all other condiments was asked to be put on the side. We were told it would be right out. My sister ended up just eating the sandwich as is. I heard so many good things about this place. Very disappointing experience today (Christmas Day). Had called 2 days ago to get confirmation all menu items were available 'to go' on Christmas; was assured they would be. I had not been to the new location on Westheimer and it is beautiful. Will was the best waiter...so kind, patient and friendly. I got the half pot roast beef sandwich and French fries. The pot toast was well seasoned and very tender! The fries were nice and hot. I also had a strawberry margarita which was delicious. I got a slice of carrot cake to take home but after one bite I ate the whole slice while still at the restaurant. I will be going back soon!!! read more

OK - background - I love Reuben sandwiches, and I used to love Katz's (still do in my memories). Austin native, and I was sorry to see Katz's Never Kloses close in Austin. Bummer. Used to be a Shiloh's fan back in the day in downtown San Antonio. Had a great food-truck Reuben here in Austin, or perhaps two. (53rd and Duval, and later Guadalupe and about 37th) Really like New World Deli and Otherside Deli in Austin these days. Had a really good one at Otherside Deli last week. Had a pretty descent one a while back at the Houston Montrose Katz's. This week ? No Bueno. Why ? Cold inards, soggy outards, too much of this and not enough of that. Flavor was lacking. Watered down. Hot and cold, resulting in too much cold. Well, to address the not enough of - not enough of grilling of the bread for the amount of kraut and Russian dressing - the bread was soggy when it arrived at the table. To address the too much of - "juice" - the sandwich was sitting in a pool of "juice" when it arrived. Juice - from the kraut and Russian dressing. A pool of it. Heat ? The bread was warm, the meat was warm, but the kraut and other items were ice-box cool and it detracted from the bites. The swiss cheese, which I asked for extra of, was almost imperceptible, perhaps due to the chill resulting from the before. I like the swiss melted entirely into the bread and kraut. I had trouble locating the swiss. When all the flavors meld together, the result is a true masterpiece. This one was a bunch of argueing children - just not getting along. There was some attempts, the ingredients were there, but they were fighting each other. Again, bummer. Based on what we tasted, I am a former supporter. Won't do it again. Not worth it. $19 base price, btw. So, I ate about half of mine, and took the rest out. Didn't know if I would finish it or not. Got back home, and we had some leftovers to deal with. So, I disassembled my Katz's disappointment, carefully, melted some butter in a plate, soaked the rye bread (nice bread, btw) in the butter and put it in the oven for 12 minutes or so at 400, turning once. I then heated the "inards" on a bowl covered plate in the microwave for a series of 30 second intervals until piping hot. Since the Russian dressing had been dissolved away in a pool of kraut residue, I added some spicy brown mustard to the bread after it was good and toasty, and sliced some Rudy's "Del Sol" jalapenos I had in the fridge, length wise, in about 1/12ths, and laid them out along the bread length, and reassembled the Reuben sandwich. Gave the first half to my spouse - "Wow ! What a difference.", she immediately exclaimed. I cleaned up my cooking dishes and tried mine, oh my gosh, what a difference - I would buy this ! For sure. Very tasty. Difference ? Texture - no sogginess, butter flavor in rye bread, heat - both in the bread and the contents, and personal preference - the spicy brown mustard and the jalapeno addition, though not absolutely necessary on a classic Reuben. FYI, I asked Katz's once to add the mustard, and they deleted the Russian dressing by mistake. The manager had no explanation for the mistake after I called back upon getting home and tasting the sandwich. "We interpreted the addition of Mustard as meaning that you didn't want Russian." No offer to make up for the mistake was proffered. Not sure how they'd do it anyway. Speaking of service, it wasn't too good in their shop at Montrose. The waitress that took our order had disappeared after taking it. Other folks came to the table afterwards, so there was no concrete replies as to why we asked for one thing and received another, or why things were not in good shape in other ways. Lackadaisical. Btw, if you like caraway seed in your kraut, bring your own to add. The restaurant does not carry it. And, btw, Randall's doesn't either. I stopped by there to get some to add to the sandwich and, and the Randall's on Holcombe didn't stock it. (?!) HEB on Buffalo Seedway did. Katz's did have rye bread with it in it, but when I called ahead, the Katz's rep said "not very much caraway in the bread, and none in our kitchen to lend to you", so I sought out a grocery store to get it from in advance. (silly to say - I like caraway in my Reuben!) When we got the sandwich, the bread was loaded with caraway. Oye vey ! Oh well. I still like my kraut with caraway in it. Then, minor faux pas with the waitress, take out containers, no take out containers, they served it in take-out containers instead of plates, which we requested, which contributed to the pooling of kraut and Russian dressing juices and the sogginess of the bread. The small things sometimes. You know. Well, half of the Reuben sucked, but the other half was resurrected with resounding success at home. If businesses would just pay attention to the little things at times, I believe that the reviews and repeat patronization would improve. Just care a little bit more about what you are doing. So first off - I called a TO-GO and arrived there about 2 mins after I ordered (since I was driving). I decided to order the Yankee Pot Roast and their French Dip sandwich. (the yankee pot roast looked so good on their image on their online menu) After I paid I expected to wait a few minutes since I got there earlier then expected. (the restaurant was not busy at this time). Over the phone they stated that the two sandwiches will take about 10 mins. After waiting ~20 mins (after I paid) I noticed that there was a to-go order on the counter that looked similar to mine. I asked if that was my order and surely enough, it was. It looked like it was sitting there for at least 5-10 mins. When I opened my order to see what I got... turned out it was just a open face sandwich pot roast with gravy on the side. It looked dry and terrible. Expecto patronum! When I have had a bad day you can usually find me here nursing a dessert and there are so many options on the menu I have moved beyond my youngsta' fixation on the Brownie Boat. These days it might be a Belgian waffle smothered in whipped cream and strawberries; or a chocolate covered macaroon; or the old bubala favorite standby: the black and white cookie! This is the most versatile place in the city, even moreso than House of Pies. It makes an excellent lunch spot - want some pastrami on rye or a vegetarian hero? Come and get it! Want a drink after work, like just one and then you go home? The bartenders are immensely capable of dealing with that situation. Want a big dinner spread laid out in front of you and your table? That can be done - they have the technology. Desserts? Oh yes. Late night drunk food after the bars? They do that too. Parking: grab a spot in the lot connected to the restaurant, otherwise you will have to dash across Westheimer from the secondary lot and Nate M. describes below how it can be fun, or not so fun, especially if anyone in your group has had a drink, or seven. Let me lay it out this way: when you walk in you see the dessert cases to your left with the black and white cookies (zomg!) and macaroons and such. There is an old timey photobooth. Stacks of Dr Brown cans. And a hostess stand, or if no hostess, the bartender will rush over from the bar on the first floor to deal with you. The first floor is the bar area and there are mostly tables for four people, but also a few booths as you swing back around behind the bar. Avoid sitting on the first floor - it is for the uggos. Yep. Check it out next time you are here. You want to be sitting upstairs. Upstairs is where the families, the flashy, and the dating people go. It is very "look at me" in the way that you either love or hate. But the real secret - the restrooms are up here. So duh, of course sit up here rather than climb unneeded stairs drink after drink. And the restrooms are clean, men and women, I have never heard a complaint about them from anyone I have eaten here with as many times as I have been here. The sandwiches come out in the Mitch Hedberg way that you would like to order as a side "a loaf of bread and some other people" because there is SO MUCH MEAT and so little bread. Its like a cow between two crackers! Which is a good thing in my mind. On the weekends (do they do this during the week?) they have an excellent 1/2 sandwich and a side (e.g. french fries or a Caesar salad) combo deal and that one half of the sandwich with some fries, and the huge pickle you get on the side of each plate, is more than enough to keep you fat, happy, and drunk the rest of the day. Disclaimer: to be drunk you need to be drinking heavily, the pickle is not soaked in Everclear. But it should be. I still can't get over how much turnover there is with the servers and bartenders. Though I have a feeling this Katz Deli is unrelated to the 123 year old Lower East Side landmark in Manhattan (http://www.yelp.com/biz/katzs-delicatessen-new-york), one can't help but notice the obvious New York influence in everything from the decor to the food. While the NYC version is located on Houston the street, this Westheimer spot is actually located in Houston the city. Coincidence? Unlikely. The H-Town version of Katz feels more like a full fledged restaurant than an actual deli, which for those paying attention, is limited to a small counter near the door. Trying to bite the thing is as ridiculous as eating the sandwiches in New York. It's just not possible without looking awkward and ridiculous, but it's sure to cure any lingering hunger pangs. Each sammy comes with an equally hearty pickle, which due to it's ginormousness in size could pass for a green hot dog. I recommend the corned beef with pastrami and Swiss cheese. Pass on that silly coleslaw. Speaking of pickles, the fried appetizer version is solid. It certainly beats the likes of their onion rings and their unusually dry fried zucchini. Their fries and macaroni and cheese were all very bland and the chicken parm was a bit of a disappointment. I've had better results with their desserts, which is good considering I'm not much of a dessert person. The 7 layer chocolate cake and NY cheesecake are both surprisingly decadent, a nice sweet ending for any deli-feast like meal. Service is a bit lackluster, which sadly has been a constant with each visit. Often times it's been a chore having to flag down wait staff to ask for menial things from water to napkins, all while waiting a good bit for food. It never helps that I'm here with a ton of folks, naturally slowing down the serving of our late night feast. Prices are going to be consistent with NY, with many of the sandwiches exceeding the $15 price tag, but I suppose that's merited relative to portion size. For many nostalgic New Yorkers who find themselves in the Houston area, I suppose this would be a solid option, especially in the case of late night eats. I used to love coming here late at night or early in the morning despite the mediocre service and food but just something a little different than the cookie cutter Denny's and Ihop until recently. Brought my son back here and requested to be sat upstairs. The hostess said there would be a 5 minute wait so no problem I wouldn't have even minded waiting 15 minutes but do not like being lied too. I understand when there are more tables open than scheduled waitstaff so please don't pull the wool over people's heads and try to tell them that those tables are for a party and when I get up there there are about 8 scattered empty tables everywhere. Blah, the jalapeno cheese did add a hint of excitement but the presentation was like they threw it on a plate hurredly for a banquet of 500 people like they do in a Hotel. Zero for presentation. My son's cheese steak sandwich, it came open faced and looked like somebody barfed on a bed of open faced hoagie bun, wtf? I'm not used to this kind of quality food here, it has always been exceptional but I guess I caught them on an off night. Service was pretty good that night, no smirks or rolling eyes as he walked off so 20% for you buddy. Service: The service was ok at best. He kept the drinks full most of the time, although we did have to wait a while to even order. Every time we tried to signal him he seemed to get sidetracked which delayed the process of getting our food. I understand when it's busy but it really wasn't busy at all. It took about 35 minutes to get our food after we ordered Which was quite disappointing. Food: I ordered the wings which are probably my favorite thing anywhere I go. The wings did taste good but some of them were cold, which seems funny since I waited so long for them. I thought they would at least be hot. My husband ordered one of the sandwiches which he did like and I agree that it was tasty. Overall I will give this experience 3 stars. I was disappointed with the whole experience and I certainly have had better ones in the past. Hopefully they fix the wait time and get the food out hot in the future! read more

Tonight when I came down the stairs at the Montrose houston location, my best friend who was sitting on the bench was being video recorded and laughed at by the security guard and employees at the host stand. My best friend is autistic and has sensory issues. He "stims" by moving his jaw and twirling/popping his fingers. When I politely and calmly confronted the security guard (M. Allen, of Allen & Allen Security) about this video and asked if this was for his personal or professional use and asked him to please delete it, he immediately suggested that my friend would be *arrested* if we did not leave immediately. Upon immediately insisting that he delete the non-consensual video he took of my friend who is autistic and can not control his stimming behaviors, the manager walked up (Stephen I believe? White 20-30something, short hair) and obliged me and told the security to delete the video after I explained the situation. One problem remained. The security guard had an iPhone, and as anyone with an iPhone is aware, you can retrieve deleted videos from the recently deleted folder. I immediately and without pause requested that he delete the video from the recently deleted folder as well, and we would gladly be on our way. The manager was clearly very uncomfortable and didn't know what to say, but ultimately chose to side with the security guard and suggested we contact corporate instead of deleting a completely inappropriate video taken of my friend with ableist malice, and mocking intent, and told us we needed to leave. He became increasingly aggressive and continued to threaten arrest of my autistic friend because he can't control his physical movements. Not only was this overly aggressive security guard's behavior a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, he even sarcastically told me he was giving me his business card (to the business which he conveniently owns), only to threaten me with harassment charges if when I called the number which I later realized was his? This whole evening has been traumatic for both my friend and I, my best friend has been in tears since we left. Apologizing to me for not being able to control his jaw or hands. I want to scream. He should not be apologizing to me right now, I feel sick so my stomach I'm so upset. This security guard gave me his business card with the utmost confidence that nothing was going to happen to him and he would be taken care of just fine. That's the sickest part of this whole situation. If you or your friends/family are autistic or have stimming behaviors that could be confused as "being on drugs" according to security-- skip this restaurant. Accommodations for those with disabilities are not taken into consideration at Katz's. read more

I love Katz's! First, they are always open and we eat at strange hours sometimes. Second, it's convenient to downtown locations for an after play dinner. We went there for dinner after seeing Cirque du Soleil downtown. We were seated right away. Our waiter 'German' was attentive. We order our food and it arrived pretty quickly. We had chicken parmesan sandwiches and one order of fries. The food was hot and delicious, but HUGE. I'd recommend two people share one chicken parm sandwich. We were both hungry as we had skipped lunch and it was still too much food for either of us. The soda wasn't mixed properly (too much carbonation and not enough syrup) but we survived. One thing I wonder is 'how do handicapped people get to the bathroom in this place?' There appears (but I could be wrong) only one set of bathrooms. They are upstairs, and I didn't see an elevator. I certainly could be wrong, but if there is a bathroom downstairs/elevator, it isn't obvious. The parking is located on either side of Westheimer... they have a lot across the street from the restaurant which is great -- no walking from distant side streets where you may get towed. read more
