We were seated immediately and our server was attentive and friendly. We had the amazing meatballs as an appetizer, and the sauce was phenomenal-tangy and sweet. I've been to Katz several times over the years. This Jewish deli is a Houston institution. It's open 24 hours. And with a prime location in the heart of Montrose, it's a popular spot especially after a night out drinking. On my most recent visit, I stopped by on a Monday night around 11:30 p.m. with two friends. We found parking in one of their two complimentary lots. Ambiance (4/5): Pretty much what you would expect from a 24/7 diner. It's a large restaurant with both a downstairs and upstairs level. Clean. And with some old school vibes. Solid for a late night meal (though of course, you can stop by at all hours of the day). Service (4.5/5): Our waitress did a good job taking care of us. She was friendly, efficient, and stopped by regularly to check on us. No complaints. Drinks (4/5): Check out this combo: I had an Oreo milkshake because how can you say no to a milkshake at an old school diner... but that wasn't enough. I also went with a margarita flight (pineapple, passion fruit, lime, and strawberry. I've always been a huge fan of flights. These margs were a little too sweet, but still pretty good. Food (4/5): My food selections were just as crazy as my drink selections. We shared the fried pickle spears, potato skins, and I had an everything bagel with cream cheese for myself. When you think of Jewish delis, one of the things you think about is pickles. These pickle spears hit the spot. The breading was delicious. As were the pickle spears. A twist on your typical pickle chips. The potato skins were also pretty good. I've had better, but these were above average. And last but not least, another thing you think of at a Jewish deli are bagels. The bagel and schmear combo is an affordable option on the menu. Katz is one of the prominent Jewish delis in Houston along with Kenny & Ziggy's. While the quality of the food is at a higher level at Kenny & Ziggy's in my opinion, Katz is still solid. Comparing Katz's to itself a few years ago - I was disappointed. The menu could've been from a cafe at Disneyworld - Costco or the like. I always returned for my Jewish favorites & the matza ball soup tasted like it had a rabbit salt lick in the middle of the cook pot. The waitstaff was excellent. Parking is always convenient. I've been here a couple times and it usually takes a while to bring out the food, probably around 25-30 minutes. Their food is OK and I have only tried their breakfast items. Waffles were nice and fluffy. The brisket tasted good on its own, but the hollandaise sauce didn't pair well with it. Servers are all very nice and attentive. They will refill coffee without being asked. It is a lively place and has a diner-style feel to it. The dessert is AMAZING. The decor is very nice; looks like it could a nice brunch spot but we did dinner. Well.... The vibe was definitely giving NYC. No greeting from the hostess just straight in with "for two?" with zero personality. Other staff greeted us kindly as we walked toward our table. Their Cobb salad does not come with a boiled egg, just so you know. I did pay for extra avocado, because I love them. They offer a very nice variety of salad dressing. Stopped in today at Katz's for a to-go order. Upon entering it was quite busy but hostess seemed to be handling well. The place is very nice, has an upstairs portion as well as downstairs with a bar. I went straight to pick up line to order and had a minimal wait time. Ordered and food maybe too about 10-15 minutes to be ready. I'm a big stuffed jalapeno popper person and these just didn't do it for me. Not sure if they're made in house but they definitely have a Costco/Sam's pop in the air fryer quality to them. The raspberry chipotle really saves them and makes them pretty decent. My Kountry Klub was overall pretty nice experience. I got it how it comes on whole wheat. The bread has a minor sweetness to it that I really enjoyed. I don't usually eat bacon but this one was tolerable so that's nice. The sandwich was a bit dry overall, wish it had a sauce that came with it or a little more moisture from tomatoes or something. The chocolate cake is AGGRESSIVELY sweet. I'm a fan of sweets but even this one was pushing it for me. It also comes with a fudge sauce and that totally throws it even more overboard. If that's your thing so be it, this is for you! Overall, I'm neither mad or extremely excited for Katz's. The price point is fairly steep. I got out with all this at a little over $50. A price point that I can go get bigger quality more flavorful dishes somewhere else. They are open 24/7 so I could see how this would be a great after leaving a club spot. Where have I been? All this time in Houston and I've never visited Katz! Shane on me. Let me tell you, Katz did not disappoint. Even my young niece agreed we made the right choice. It had a crispy covering over the dip as if the top layer was topped off with a spark of fire. This added to the taste. It tasted handmade not stored and then baked. It was so delicious! Now let's talk about the grilled chicken sandwich. The piece of chicken was cut in half butterfly style and it didn't shy off the thickness. The chicken was bigger than the bread and didn't lack in taste. It was grilled good enough to where it still retained the juiciness. For the Alfredo penne, we added a side of chicken. It was an extra $4.00 for the chicken but it was worth it. The sauce tasted homemade and fresh. Customer service - 4 stars Our waitress was fantastic. She had a great personality and constantly checked in on us. I definitely left a good review for her on the comment card. This was my first time going to Katz. I never knew there was one in this area. I was with a friend of mine. When we walked in, we were greeted by three employees. They were very friendly. I also noticed that the decor was different and unique. It was appealing to my eyes. I felt like I was somewhere else. Maybe a different era and city. Well, I stopped by for a late lunch and having been a customer previously had a certain expectation. I was greeted promptly with a smile by the hostess who inquired to the size of my party of one, then led to a table when I declined seating at the bar. The server came across as totally unconcerned with me and my experience and only interested in whether or not I wanted to order an appetizer. I ordered an iced tea and it took a full 5 minutes to get my beverage, by which time I was ready to order. Again I was hit up to order an appetizer, which I declined. I ordered the Pastrami and Eggs which when delivered to my table was acceptable, but I could have cut the poor attitude with a knife. My server, Lamar, didn't bother to check in as to how things were or if I needed refills on my tea or water. When he finally did swing by and I declined the offer of desert and requested my check; I heard him tell the hostess that I was his last table. Not something which encourages me to return, regardless of his previous poor service. Come time to pay my bill, Lamar hands me a tablet with a preloaded suggested tip amount which was insulting to me given the poor customer service which I received. I should add that working in the service industry myself, I'm very atune to the difference between good guest service and distain for the customer. Maybe Lamar needs to check his career goals because he doesn't excel in guest service. If my visit today is indicative of the regular service, I can't recommend stopping by. It's a dish that I'm very Goldilocks about. I want tang, but not too much, I need creamy and some sweet but please don't overdo! He also had potato salad and he was pleased. Again, I was okay with it but thought it lacked punch. Oof, sorry about all the extra neediness on my part. Dan's sandwich was a tuna salad on rye and he pronounced it okay. That said, it wasn't stellar because it needed punch, perhaps with mustard or a squeeze of citrus. Just something to elevate it. He did approve of the bread. As for me, I went for matzoh ball soup because when it's good, I swoon. I did not swoon. The broth, noodles, and chicken were fine although the chicken leaned toward dry. But there are a lot of restaurants in Houston that have good food and stout drinks, what really makes difference is the staff. Ask for Sol, who was an absolutely fantastic server. Wow, so the name is Katz' and I am jewish kid from Brooklyn (born) and LA (raised) so when my friends in Houston told me the name I was hopeful. I will give you the caveate here that my review was for what I ordered a corn beef sandwich. It was terrible, I really should give it a 1 but my friends meals looked like 3's so I am dropping it to a 1. This was for sure the worst corn beef sandwich that I have ever had, period. The corn beef was tasteless, I had in fact ordered pastrami and she brought me this by accident, but took 2 bites before I figured it out. Wow the rye was way too thick and the supermarket Jewish Rye was better. The slaw was terrible no creamyness to it. And the final straw the pickle was a vingar-based pickle ala Clausen or Vlaslick like the super market. My friends are no jewish and born and raised in Houston so they knew the one jewish deli there (can't remember the name but it is solid) but overall they are not deli folks. So I meantioned and explained Katz's in NYC and they asked "so you think this is the same owership?" I knew as soon as we walked it in that it was not, but I thought this was still a kosher-style based deli this ordering the sandwich. So we came late after the rodeo. Parking was a bit difficult but that's to be expected so don't worry. You'll find a spot, be patient. Coming inside was a bit chaotic but we got to the hostess stand and put our names down. We saw several tables needing to be cleaned and waited at the end of the bar. We were soon met with a guy, Rodolfo, who deserves a shout out! I told my husband that guy is speedy Gonzales! He worked more than anyone we saw in there. He was on top of getting those tables cleaned then moved behind the bar helping out there. He seemed to be the jack of all trades for them. Doing some bar back and going all over making sure he kept up with the tables. He asked if we'd like a table. Sure! He seated us and our server Tiffany cane right away. We noticed the host stand wasn't doing the best job and getting people seated. Was disorganized but it didn't ruin our dining experience, Rodolfo made sure of that. He was running the floor! I had to slip him a $20 tip. He deserved it and probably never gets an individual tip. Only thing negative was it was a tad warm in the back. But the cold drinks and ice water helped. Decided on two different steak sandwiches, both very good! We did ask for my husband's to have the American cheese removed and Tiffany took it and came back with a new one. She was very attentive.
