The family and I came here to celebrate Mother's Day breakfast. It has been several years since I've visited Katz's & this was my first time at this location. There is a decent parking lot which had ample spots when we arrived around 9:45 am but it did get crowded by the time we left around 11 am. I liked the front entrance which had outdoor seating but it was too warm for us so we opted to sit indoors. There were a decent amount of customers already and we didn't have to wait for a table. Our server was welcoming and offered recs when asked. We ordered the chicken & waffles, kids pancakes with mashed potatoes, kids French toast with strawberries, and klassic breakfast plate with two scrambled eggs, jalapeño cheddar sausage & pancake substitute. All of us really enjoyed our meals! The pancakes were perfectly warm and fluffy as I remembered. It was my kids' first time ever trying Katz's & they ate almost all of their food except for a few slices of French toast. My daughter especially enjoyed her mashed potatoes which did not have gravy. My husband said the chicken & waffles were overall crispy and good quality. They even offered free mimosas to moms that day but I had to decline. It was a kind gesture! The employee provided great service and the table was quickly cleared towards the end too. A great 24/7 chain diner with a southern feel. The restaurant feels like a very uppity diner. The staff are very friendly and nice. We went during happy hour but unfortunately, they only have happy hour on drinks. No happy hour food items available on the menu. Quite a let down on this note. You pay mostly for the building & environment. (Food? not so much) Theres also an additional 3% surcharge for credit card transations. *** Honey Mustard $1 surcharge that was not communicated at the time that I asked for honey mustard to go with my sandwich. The lack of forward communication is a bit frowned upon. I could have bought half a bottle's worth at walmart. ***Pickle Spears Not worth a $14 plate. A tasty appetizer if you're into pickles. The brine is that of a traditional salty profile. Definitely not the sweet and sour type, just salty and sour. But the batter is extremely crispy and crunchy that pairs well with the dipping sauce. *** The RUBEN (corned beef & rye) In short, not worth the price. The beef has a very gamey smell to it that is somewhat off-putting. Sauerkraut is nice but does not justify the cost. But the bread was toasted to perfection. *** World Famous Cheesecake Shake TLDR; not worth $14 for a mechnically separated slice of cheese cake + milk shake. I could have bought a descent half a cheesecake at HEB. Also, the staff that made the shake excluded the cheesecake garnish pieces that was suppose to dress the top of the shake. A hard miss. This changes visually and texturally when you consume the shake, especially when the picture is right there. The shift manager (Zaria) apologized, reconciled, and rectified the situation. The great thing about Katz is that it is open 24/7. Houston has such a great food culture, but so many restaurants don't often stay open incredibly late I've been to Katz delis in NYC and in other parts of Houston, and this location is quite different. This spot is more modern and trendy. While the other locations have that NYC diner style charm, this location is more appealing in terms of decor, seating, etc They have brunch, traditional breakfast, specialty coffees, lunch, dinner, alcohol, desserts etc. I went to this location for brunch and we had a great time. The service was solid. We had a sizable group and we didn't have to make a reservation. We were seated in no time, and it was a weekend day. Also, our food came out in a timely manner The food was tasty. I don't find the prices overly steep, but it's not especially inexpensive. Believe it or not this was my first time trying a Kat'z restaurant. I honestly never had a desire to go because the ratings weren't that great. We wanted to go to a different restaurant, but the wait was too long so we decided to go here instead. I was surprised to see how extensive the menu was and you have the option to do breakfast lunch or dinner which is nice, means there's something for everybody. This location looks like a bougie diner and is clean inside with plenty of seating. For starters, we had the spinach dip which was good, but definitely needed to add a little salt to it and the spicy meatballs which I wasn't interested in trying, but was told they were indeed spicy. I had a Grand Marnier mimosa and that was the highlight of my experience. I would go back every weekend just to have one lol it's definitely worth the $15. For an entrée, I had Chilaquiles with scrambled eggs and an extra cheese, and it also comes with a side of potatoes. Definitely would be my go to for brunch. Everyone else had the stuff French toast and buttermilk pancakes. There were no complaints. Service was great. We had Ally who typically works the bar who was very attentive and friendly. For starters service was amazing! Our sever Santana was just amazing! Such a sweet personality! Cole the manager was great too! Just making sure we were ok! Julian had a great personality! Best part of course of Katz's is the 24 hour diner experience.. This location features a large parking lot, a spacious interior with modern decor, and lively energy generally after a night out. We came here after a Halloween party and the place was busy. Service was efficient. I did enjoy their menu selections, there's a good variety of sandwiches on different breads and some diner classics... You can also order online, and check to see their happy hour deals as well. The sandwich itself is just okay.. i think paying $18+ for a mediocre Reuben seems to be a bit steep even for a late night spot. I wouldn't want to come here other than the occasional late night dining.. so overall it's good for a diner, but i didn't think their sandwiches were worth the price point. This was a late night dinner. We arrived at about 11pm and was greeted and seated right away. The restaurant was pretty busy. As we were taken to our seats I noticed that food/crumbs from the last guest were on the seats. The person that sat us actually left us standing there. My husband took the menu and brushed the crumbs off the seat. We decided to stay because that late not much was open so we just hoped for the best. Surprisingly, our overall experience went pretty good. The manager came over to take our drink order because our waitress was very busy. The atmosphere was pretty laid back and other guests stunned to be enjoying their visit. Once our waitress came over, she was extremely friendly and kind. I ordered the waffles and added grilled chicken. It was really good. My husband ordered the French toast and he said it was really good as well. The service was very quick. The manager came by our table shortly after our food arrived and asked us how was everything, I started to ask her for avocado and then said it was okay. First of all, I don't know why I haven't come here until a long time because they had food that I considered soul food. I love a good cabbage roll and their cabbage roll was huge and it came with corn beef inside. I had the appetizer portion which is just one and then I wanted some potato latkes or potato pancakes as they called them, and those came out really delicious too. One of the things I love most about Katz is the fact that it never kloses (#1). Like any large city with a robust dining culture, Houston's late night scene took a major hit during the pandemic. I appreciate that Katz has stayed true to it's word as a true 24 hour establishment, serving the community of insomniacs, drunkards, and late night savants (#2). What this place should not be confused for, is any relation to the institution that is in NYC (#3). The Katz here is a bit more modern (#4) and has a diner vibe with an emphasis on deli fare, where as the other is a true delicatessen that has been serving tourists since nearly 140 years ago. The prices are a bit on the higher side than the average comparable spot, so they most certainly share this in common. While I'm not terribly impressed with the food, I am very thankful to have the option to rock a reuben, latkes, a pastrami sandwich, and a matzo ball soup at 4am. My go-to sandwich here is typically the Katz Meow ($15), which is a hearty combination of turkey, roast beef, corned beef, and pastrami with lettuce and Russian dressing. I also appreciate the variety of bread options that include Jewish rye, challah, sourdough, bagel, and French roll. They also have a solid special for a half sandwich and a side from 10am-4pm every day for $13. The parts of the menu that make me scratch my head are the various things they've included to appease the local crowd. Korean meatballs? Taco plate? Australian sea bass? A Katza-dilla? Chilaquiles? I admire the versatility, but seeing as I've had all of the above and was not satisfied, I'd recommend to skip it all. Service has always been fairly good in my experiences. The phone manners are on point, the wait staff has always been quick about getting things through. Even though I'm not a big proponent of the what I've eaten and what I've paid, I can still the value in a place that offers a little bit of everything to everyone, especially at all hours of the night. ___________ (#1) The best motto. The service here is always great. I've been here in the early 1-2am mornings and also for brunch and I will say the service is always very attentive. The 24 hrs open is really convenient and there's a large array of food to choose from. The space itself is very large, modern, and has ample space for parking. The food itself though, is ok. I've had their pasta after a long night and it was a large portion and definitely hit the spot. The waffle sandwich for brunch though I felt was really dry and I was expecting a bit more for the price. This is the 1st time in years that I've had Katz's but this is my 1st time coming to this location. I've ordered a few items Togo. A Klassic Ruben with Corned Beef on Rye, a side of Steak Fries, Strawberry Lemonade and a kids French Toast with Fries and an Apple Juice. The Ruben is one of my favorite sandwiches in the world, so let's see how this Katz's stands up. Well, this Ruben isn't the best I've had but it's not bad. The Rye bread was partially toasted, which I like, I just wish they would put a bit more meat and 1000 island in it. The Fries wasn't bad either, when I tasted it when it was hot, the fries had a pretty good bite to it but I wish it had more salt. The Kids French Toast was pretty good all on its own but the one thing they forgot to put in my bag... Syrup. Without syrup it's good but with it would've been 1000 times better. The Strawberry Lemonade was good, it was just Lemonade with a hint of strawberry flavor even though it looked like Strawberry Lemonade. It was still good though. We dropped in here for lunch after my daughter asked what we felt like eating. I always answer "a great sandwich!" My girl followed my lead. This deli is close by in the Heights neighborhood. It was not crowed on a Tuesday lunchtime so the parking was easy. The service was excellent, with a nice greeting and a comfy table and menus and waters appearing like magic. Speaking of menus, this place is the real deal deli! The French fries, the sweet potato fries and the fried zucchini appetizer were all fabulous! Starting off the location is very nice, really like the look of the place. NY vibes all around. Located in a spot within walking distance of a HEB and some dessert options for after your meal [if you have room that is] The food is excellent, from the sandwiches to breakfast. Now I know you're thinking it's hard to mess a sandwich up but don't be mistaken, something so simple can be easily go awry. Thankfully they hit the mark, I've tried many and they are all good. Anything with pastrami will be *chefs kiss* I recommend pairing your sandwich with their homemade chips, lightly salted and slightly garlicky from what I taste but they are very good and crisp. Service can be hit or miss sometimes but that can really be everywhere. More often than not service is very good and the staff have been friendly and helpful. I've had pleasant experiences the few times I've been to a Katz. This one was NOT. (Food wise) customer service was great (Ally) was my waitress. But not a very good first impression for the cooks. My "Black coffee" tasted like water served in a glass coffee mug it looked like tea. I've known about Katz for about 15-20 years but never visited until this past weekend. When I got word that this was where we would be meeting for lunch, I was ecstatic! I love sandwiches and this was my opportunity to try something new! I had to look over the menu about a week in advance to do a process of elimination (lol) because there is so much to choose from besides sandwiches. Since I've never tasted corned beef or Russian dressing, I chose to get the Reuben; great choice! After taking everyone's order on his (point of sale) pos, we received our food with no problems. I say pos because he typed the orders in; nothing from just pure memory. We were a party of 6 and I guess it was too much for our waiter to handle. I guess our waiter was moving too slow because another server had to step in to clear the table and ask if we needed more to drink or anything else. Thanks to her for helping! Here's why I gave only 3 stars... It wasn't until it was time for our checks to come that the real issues started. We were asked not once but two separate times by our initial server what we each ordered! The second time him asking, we all just looked around at each other and determined that he must be new. If that wasn't enough, our bill STILL came to the table wrong! Three of us were charged for extra drinks and food. Come to find out, our waiter was new and because the manager knew he was falling short, she stepped in to make sure everything was accurate and finished where he left off. I'm not sure how many days our waiter had been trained prior to being put out on the floor on his own so I can't fault him nor management. Go to the Westheimer or Woodlands locations you'll get a sandwich that literally takes two people to finish it. Here they're beyond chintzy and greedy, as if corned beef or pastrami are now as valuable as gold. $18 will net you approximately the same amount of meat as a 6 inch subway at 3x the price.
