If it's possible to have an existential experience at a brunch place, we definitely did today. I'm rarely free on weekday mornings but we were celebrating a life milestone so I took the morning off to meander with my partner. We walked here from the TL and had built up an appetite by the time we got here. Only a handful of patrons were there around 10:45 on a Monday morning so we had our pick of seats and full attention of our server. The interior of Kate's is refreshingly non-fancy. Definitely a throwback, simple, diner. The menu was varied but not overwhelming and we ordered the big guy breakfast, French toast orgy and side of biscuits. When the food came out, I was SHOCKED. Portions are so so generous here and we barely ate half of what we got. Everything was delicious though! Loved the sausage and home fries. French toast was really decadent but not heavy. Yogurt added some lightness to it and I liked the fruit as well. The biscuits came warm and were good but could have used some salt. Our server was kind and checked on us throughout without hovering. The coffee here (sf coffee co?) was also really tasty and I appreciated the free refills. Both my partner and I were really satisfied and will be back! Even when you tip 20% in cash, they add on an extra 25% tip onto the total credit card amount, on top of taxes and other fees including San Francisco's mandated healthcare charge. It's kind a sketchy to buy from any kind of restaurant that doesn't list the actual prices that they charge. If you want to charge more, just put it on the menu so there are no surprises. read more

I go here all the time. Today I order the French toast orgy and my friend orders steak and eggs well done. Our order arrives and the French toast orgy seems to be missing the French toast. I inform the "head person" and says he'll bring out the French toast. My friend has now bitten into the steak and it was med to med rare. I inform the person again and he takes the plate with an attitude. After a couple of minutes I realize that I want my French toast orgy to be just that. So I ask the person to take my bowl of whatever it was and make the actual order. He takes everything away and tells me to leave. "He's not serving my kind today." I had to take a minute to write a love letter to this SF gem. I spent my early 20's living across the street and Kate's Kitchen was always a beloved space that truly served its community in multiple ways. The food manages to be both basic and comforting while also having a wonderfully wholesome and unique twist that's noticeable in almost every dish. I've been out of the city for nearly a decade and just made a DD order hoping it hadn't degraded like so many of my past favorites. I'm delighted to say that it was like stepping back in time, everything was outrageously delicious and exactly as I remember it which is quite a feat. To add to their accomplishments the prices are still some of the most reasonable in the city, especially for this quality and quantity. Weekends does get crowded at this little café/restaurant, with a ton of people waiting for the breakfast/brunch. But during the weekdays for lunch are not too bad. I came here for lunch and had the meatloaf sandwich. My $8.50 sandwich has a thick slab of beefy meatloaf, ketchup sauce, grilled caramelized onions, lettuce and sliced cherry tomatoes in a toasted rye bread. Was around the area this weekend and decided to stop in for brunch after searching on the awesome Yelp application on my phone. We got here around 2:30PM, so the place wasnt too packed. I ordered the meat omelette, which came with bacon bits and veggies. One would think a meat omelette would have more meat (like sausages) but the only meat in it was bacon and the rest veggies. It came with potatoes and toast. My BF ordered the big guy's breakfast which came with 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 bacons, a sausage patty and potatoes. The sausage patty was pretty bad: really stiff and no taste whatsoever. All in all a decent place for breakfast/brunch but nothing too estatic or out of the ordinary. The cornmeal pancakes came first and I knew I was in trouble when it filled out half of our two-person table. And then the snickering and pointing and fat-shaming by other patrons happened when my platter of bacon, sausage, eggs, and home fries showed up. If our table could have extended, it would have made room for it. And all of this for $9.25. Oh Kate. Just when I was prepared to accept the possibility that it's not you, it's me, I stop in and you provide me with a few examples of how it IS you and it's got nothin' to do with me. At one point, you were serving some of the best coffee in SF. A special chicory blend that was made specifically for you and now, I don't even know if we can call what you served coffee. It was bland, burnt and oh yeah, the spoonful of grounds at the bottom of my cup was not so attractive. I only order one dish here because I tend to go with what's great and just enjoy that as often as possible. The flannel hash used to be tender, juicy, loaded with flavor and melt in your mouth goodness. Sadly, it's done a 180 and turned into rubbery, bland, tough nastiness and I was so butt hurt by that jab to the gut. What happened girl? Are you nursing a break up? What is it baby?? Aaron I. said we had to go here based on what he heard from friends. After making room to park by bumping two cars i was sardined between, we exited the car with applause from spectators. We were immediately seated, the vibe was tight with nice beats and a local crowd. I immediately scanned the menu for detox food and was pleased to find many options- like the "fruit orgy"..cute. I went with the "colorful vegetarian scramble" from the specials board and had a side of fruit. Lila, our server was incredible from start to finish and BTW very easy on the optics. This place is quite delicious, we initially came in the lower haight area to go to nickies, however we didn't make it in time for brunch and accross the street was this packed hole in the wall called Kate's kitchen. We made our way there, put our name on the list and waited patiently. Once we sat down we ordered the mimosa carafe with orange and pomegranate, my fiance got the corn beef hash with the onion biscuit which was delicious, and I got the breakfast sandwich and added sausage, everything was great we also ordered the hush puppies which were probably the best ones I had in sf, especially matched with the strawberry jelly and butter they have. All in all, great place, great atmosphere, great food and the waitresses are very friendly. We will be back :) read more

OHHH KATE you make a good brunch. EVERYTHING looks great, so sorry we took a long time to order. You were really nice about it though. You were very attentive but not pushy. Great omelette. Fabulous pumpkin pancakes although it didn't taste like pumpkin. OMG OMG THE JUICE it was so good. And they'll blend whatever you want. And they're so freaking nice. And then we went for dinner, and it was almost 10pm and I think on the menu it said they were already closed but they were just hanging out so they let us order some comfort food to go. I was getting over a weird illness thing and that was the first real meal I'd had in DAYS. Shrimp and grits to help get some calories in me. It was alright, the spice was nice. The seasonal veggies side was a total sleeper hit -- so flavorful and "healthy" and very sizable. Collards were sad, bland, and small. I would eat those veggies every day. Very homey place to dine in. We came here early on a Saturday evening to catch dinner. I love the decor, and the diners seemed to be locals. The beet salad was good. Sliced beets, lettuce, lathered up in a creamy cilantro dressing sprinkled with some cheese. Added a side of salmon, but it wasn't cooked all the way. Good thing I like sushi, so it was like eating seared salmon LOL. The paella didn't really seem to have a paella identity. It had chunks of salmon, small grilled shrimp (almost bay sized), rice, and tomatoes. Reminded me of gumbo without the sausage and beans. Tasted like salsa with rice, in a good way. Not my favorite choice. We were a bit excited about the fried chicken, but disappointed. The breading was crunchy and tasty, but the overall dish lacked seasoning. I ate it the way it was supposed to, whole. My girlfriend got picky (literally!) and picked off the skin and breading (oh the agony!) and noticed that the chicken meat itself was not marinated. The beans were bland, however the mashed potatoes were creamy, moist, and had good flavor. My girlfriend likes her drinks sweet, and I like mine fragrant and not sweet. We both found the perfect drinks here. For her, the lemonade spritzer. I thought it was too sweet, even for a sweet drink, but it was tasty. Freshly squeezed lemon juice. Mmm. I had the herbal berry iced tea. Tasted like hibiscus tea with a hint of blackberry (or was it my imagination?). No refills on the drinks. Overall a bit disappointed, but on the positive side, the service was good. The server was very accommodating and polite. I may come back just because of the good service and neighborhood feel of the place and give some of the other dishes another try. We'll have Kate's on the radar for the brunch, which seems like what Kate's is known for! The hush puppies looked good, but it's not available on the dinner menu. I love Kate's Kitchen because it's one of the first breakfast places to open on weekends. They open at 8:30am, so you can get in and get some food if you have somewhere to be in the late morning. The food was great too, and prices are reasonable. I got the New England Flannel Hash ($12.50). It was a good-sized portion worth the price. The corned beef was thick sliced, but very soft and juicy. And FOR ONCE, I found a restaurant where they don't skimp out on the meat. Praise the lord almighty!! I was not a big fan of the biscuit--many they forgot to put a dash of salt?? Not impressed, for a biscuit that they take pride in making themselves. We also got the Hush Puppies, which were pretty good (once I drenched them in syrup), but somehow the hush puppies were outshined by their side, the Pooh Butter (get your mind out of the gutter yo). I could have just ate the honey butter by itself, it was that good! The staff there was very nice, although they had trouble making medium-over eggs for my friends hahaha. We ended up settling on eggs over hard lmao. We attempted to come here for dinner a month earlier because Yelp says Kate's is open for dinner. No such thing. When we called prior to coming, the phone was left off the hook. Our second attempt was a to go order. Do not order soup to go here. They don't have the proper containers and will not tell you until you pick it up. They put my soup which consisted of broth and vegetables in a cardboard recyclable to go container. (The same container they put Sandwiches & salads to go.) They simply wrapped it in Saran Wrap and said sorry because they didn't have soup containers. On the car ride home, the soup leaked through the cardboard container down onto/into the 2 cardboard containers of salads underneath it. Basically ruined the entire meal. When I got home and opened up what was left of the soup, it was just soggy vegetables and soggy biscuit. read more

After a night in the city at a concert I wanted a sit down home cooked breakfast and Kate's Kitchen was a great spot. The cafe opens to the outside and was perfect for a refreshing brunch. The service was great - fast friendly and kept the coffee flowing. I had the corned beef hash - not to be missed - some of the best here in SF Bay. I also tried some hush puppies and they were soft fluffy and served with a great side sauce and our server recommended syrup -yes please! My partner had the Irene wrap - great take on a breakfast burrito just a tad bit healthier with a spinach wrap. Portions were giant and so tasty. Not a great experience. The waiter spilled syrup on my bag and didn't say anything. Over medium eggs came our over easy - twice. The bacon was dry and overcooked. The sausage was even worse - sort of looks like a lumpy hamburger, burnt on the outside and undercooked inside. The cornmeal pancakes are basically just diner cornbread. Best brunch spot in SF -- hands down. If I could, I would come here several times a week. It's that good. Whenever I get a day off work, I make sure to come to Kate's Kitchen...there's simply no better way to start my day. Unfortunately I'm not able to do so, which is unfortunate because as many other Yelpers have bemoaned, you'll need to come early on Weekends, because this place is small and fills up quickly...so be prepared to wait if you're not an early riser. But make sure you do wait, however, because Kate's is an experience like no other, and you'll always leave feeling 100x times better than when you arrive. The menu is extensive, the wait staff is quirky and and extremely friendly, and the food of course is absolutely amazing. The best part for me though, is that ALL "egg breakfasts" and most of the other menu items come with a MASSIVE helping of their homefries. And these are not just any homefries...they are quite literally the best possible thing that could happen to your hangover...ever. Homefries are an essential part of every person's balanced weekend brunch, and these are the best out there. Need suggestions for what to order? Thought you'd never ask: The biscuits and gravy...french toast "orgy"...meat omelette...veggie scramble...buttermilk pancakes (caution: the tall stack is massive) Pick your poison - they're all good.
