I used to really enjoy Kate's kitchen.. the variety of food that they serve was unique and quite tasty.. but in the recent months they seem to have gone through a lot changes which seems to have effected their quality of food.. Every time I order there seems to be inconsistency with what I am going to be served.. I understand that post-pandemic there may be may be many challenges - such as shortage in staff, ability to serve quality food at a pace that feels good for everyone (mainly for the workers themselves) and being able to provide a service in which brings people, like myself, to Kate's kitchen.. I'm so used to the canned Mary Kitchen style that it's a shock to taste actual corned beef like you'd have at an Irish wake. It's tasty in a you-know-it's-bad-for-you sort of way. Too bad they put way too many pan-fried potatoes in the hash. As a rule, I never complain about potatoes on my plate, but honestly, it was just too much relative to the corned beef chunks. The sunny-side eggs were also a bit rubbery, and I do like them gooey to sop up the hash. But hey, I still loved the authentic corned beef, and that's what really matters in life. This place was GREAT! Some of these reviews don't do it justice! I found this place as a "must go" on Haight and I'd have to say, I agree 100%. The food is not only delicious and inexpensive, but the portion size is waaaaay more than enough. The French toast-to die for, the hush puppies and pancakes were interestingly different and delicious. The service was also great. Erin was so attentive and nice and her recommendations were spot on! My roommate and I came to Kate's to try the gluten free pancakes. We we arrived, we ordered a mimosa carafe and our glasses were pretty gross. In fact, all of the dishes we received has some crusted food left over from either the dishwasher or whoever previously used them. Honestly though, the saddest part was the pancake situation. We took one bite of our pancakes and they literally tasted like cleaning chemicals. I swear I am not a dramatic person, and I've only ever left positive reviews, but I really wanted to warn people because had someone said something, I would have probably skipped eating breakfast here. You also feel fuller eating the sausage benedict as opposed to the traditional ham benedict. Before ordering, I was concerned that the benedict itself may not be enough, but it turned out to be sufficient! The dish comes with a generous side portion of potatoes, which I eat with the ketchup and hot sauce provided on the table. One important note though: the restaurant has an open-kitchen layout, so it smells greasy and a little overwhelming with the sheer amount of different cooking ingredients. Ok, so this started as a 1-Star review, but I changed it due to the food quality. When we arrived the place was not even half full and 75% of the tables already had their food. The server zoomed around like the place was standing room only. However, the zooming was non-productive as he would walk to the kitchen and back to the dining room to look around before repeating. He brought us coffee and then zoomed away before we could order. He then would approach other tables to close their bills out while they were still seemingly eating. I said excuse me to get his attention and let him know that we would like to order. He said he'd be with us in a minute. When he finally did come over after we had been waiting for over 10 minutes, he says "this isn't a drive thru, it takes time!" If we weren't in concerned about finding another place to eat before getting my boyfriend to work, I would have walked out after that charming bit of repartee. I do add salt and pepper to it, and get the egg cooked over medium so it's slightly runny. I have to cut it in half to eat as it's so big. She also said every time he would walk by in front of our table he would be taking under his breathe and he would be swearing under his breathe. She could see his lips moving. I know they were busy, but we had to flag the water down for every step of the process. We always got a "one second" and waited for someone else to get sent to our table.
