The biscuits and gravy are a must!! I have seen many friends share of this restaurant and it is such a drive from my home that I thought I may never get there. At 8:30 am on a Saturday we barely waited 2 minutes for a table - a booth even! The place is quaint, small, cozy - whatever term you prefer. Holy moley! I've been here many many times and have never left a review! Locals or those just visiting alike: You HAVE to try this place for Breakfast. The good: the food is bomb. Quality is definitely there across the board for anything and everything I've ever tried there (including the pies). The bad: location is a little off the beaten path, the parking isn't wonderful, and the layout of the restaurant feels like it could use an upgrade/addition/new location. It always feels cramped. The ugly: cash only and bad for large groups. Bring a friend but not too many. But let us not forget. The food quality more than makes up for the shortcomings. This is a very good breakfast place with a very good down-home start up business history. The food is very good. But some big drawbacks are the tiny tiny eating area space which contributes to the long lines on the weekends to get in in the first place. And secondly, the busyness between a packed house and constant carry out order pick ups contributes to what appears at times to be an inattentive staff. Current COVID-related issues: Due to 25% capacity limits, roughly every other table was being kept empty. They are also open only Th-Sun until the restrictions are lifted. We had to wait about 10 min for a table and had to stay inside the little foyer area between the outer and inner doors while we waited. We were joined with a stranger standing within 2 feet of us. Not sure how they can be cool with that. I wasn't about to go outside and lose my spot in line not knowing how much longer we'd have to wait. I had been here before by myself and was sort of "meh" about the biscuits/gravy and the french toast. Brought my adult son back because he's a breakfast guy. He felt the same about the biscuits/gravy. I ordered the side of cinnamon toast with icing and it was great! But not worth $5. I was unable to order what appealed to me the most, the Frisco, and then the roast beef dinner, and something else that had beef. "No beef" today. My Reuben was pretty small and the fries portion was smaller than expected too. The Reuben tasted good though. The bill was $25 which seemed too high to me for basic diner food, half of it breakfast. I believe we got the waitress that has been commented about in other reviews. There's something edgy about her demeanor and voice. It made my son reluctant to ask questions about the portion size of the bacon, etc. because, as he said, "she seemed annoyed." I don't understand why they continue to not get set up for credit cards. Hardly anyone uses cash anymore. I don't think I'll go back here again. I don't see what the fuss is about in all the reviews. It feels like a "monkey see, monkey do" kind of thing versus really evaluating if the food is above-average and of good value. P.S. We have not been there for quite awhile but we decided to stop in for breakfast. First thing was no handicapped parking. Had to park in the dirt and difficult to safely get out of the car. Decided to hike it to the door and there was a line outside waiting to get in. No where to sit down, when you have a disability and have trouble walking standing outside is not an option so we left. I'm from Texas and this place made me feel at home. I work at a country cafe back home and this place has got it going on. Not a stop for someone who is impatient or starving because there's definitely a wait but it was expected when you see a line out the door. My only complaint is that there are signs on some tables that are only for parties of 5 which is smart but not when you have single people sitting at tables for 4. There's really no winning in that situation. I think suggesting to let others sit with you would be the best solution. Anyways, food was wonderful and service was great! read more

I've been going here since I started walking. The quality has stayed the same and the nostalgia never wears off. Nothing fancy, just down homemade comfort foods. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu but a I'd die first if I didn't order their grilled cinnamon raisin bread with icing. Truly, to die for! Also, pies.. galore. And every time I come to Carleton to visit my parents, I order the biscuits and gravy. No one surpasses it. OK....There is alot of hype surrounding this place.There is always a line out the door ( no waiting area inside), it's decor is dirty and out dated, it is super cramped and crowded, and the servers aren't very friendly. Their mission is fast service...nothing more. Be prepared for that. I have been having breakfast at this place for over 20 years and little has changed. Good (not great) food at a reasonable price. Breakfast and lunch selections. Good homemade biscuits and gravy. The cinnamon buns and other baked goodies are large and look impressive in the showcase but are dry and not very good....pass them up. We stopped by Monday when they were closed, SO glad we came back today - we are planning on coming again on this trip!! Our 12 yr old son called the grilled raisin toast with icing "a little slice of heaven" and our 9 yr old daughter exclaimed over the biscuits: "they're so tender!" These were homemade, not Bisquick! I watched the fresh berries being sliced in the back for the 'biscuits with strawberries' special. We then fought over the lemon meringue pie slice we could NOT resist for breakfast dessert. Best. Breakfast. Ever. They know how to cook eggs right. The homestyle potatoes are second to none. The ham is so juicy and absolutely delicious. This is food made with LOVE. And, of course. The pie. You can't leave a review about Kate's without mentioning the pie. Best pie you're ever going to have. It's ruined having pie for me anywhere else, because I get sad when it isn't Kate's. Crust is amazing. As a child I requested the chocolate creme pie for birthdays and special occasions (still do). I've been coming here since I was a baby (and probably in utero, my folks love this place) and I'm going to keep coming here for a cheap, delicious breakfast in this cozy diner as long as I can.
