South Rockwood has 1 bank, 1 gas station, a post office and the wonderful Dixie Cafe. I've been frequenting this place since I was a little kid. They have the best home cooked meals next to your Grandma's cooking. I've never had a bad meal here. They always have daily specials. On Thursday they have a Polish plate and it's amazing. They make their own cabbage-kraut too. I just had breakfast with my boyfriend here this morning, and he had the cinnamon roll pancakes with a side of hash browns and I had the veggie omelette with hash browns and rye toast. It's the best veggie omelette I've ever had in my life! They even put broccoli in it! Their coffee is delicious too. All of the waitresses are friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is laid back with lots of regulars. You should eat here. read more

We LOVE "mom & pop diners" vs going to chain restaurants. I read reviews that were great. We headed there for lunch after walking a few miles at the Detroit International Wildlife Refuge (it was really muddy). It was busy so it took a bit for the food to get to us - no biggie. We got an omelet with pancakes and wheat toast; and the big breakfast with American fries (after seeing all the reviews about getting them). Everything was very good. The waitress was great! We had drink refills prompt, she was friendly, and even brought us cups to take a refill to go! They also had a lot of to-go orders happening. Club was good - ordered it for lunch, but toast with Mayo on it doesn't travel, so I took apart and will toast some bread later and build. Perfect PRESENTATION. Needed lunch before going to Lake Erie Metropark and this place was recommended by a friend. It's on the smaller side, but just enough booths and tables. We were seated in a booth and given menus to look over. A friendly older woman was sitting alone in a different booth and ended up coming over to give us a couple recommendations after asking if we had ever been before. She was very kind. The waitress that we had was so friendly and took our order down. She came out with the chicken dumpling soup for me before the rest of the lunch. My fiancé ended up getting breakfast and I got lunch. I'm not even kidding, I had one of the best club sandwiches! The potatoes served with the omelette were so good! Get the homefries! I've passed this place for years, but never stopped in because the exterior was dingy and not too inviting. Finally tried it yesterday and am already looking forward to a return. The interior was clean and well kept, probably remodeled not too long ago. I ordered a gyro and fries (based on the recommendation of another Yelper) and enjoyed it. The gyro had lots of meat, and well flavored at that, though it was slapped on the grill frozen, clearly (and for a place like this, unsurprisingly) not an in-house product. The tzadziki was creamy with nice cucumber chunky and the pita was perfectly grilled, foldable but still firm. Fries were a little soft, but not greasy. All the sandwiches I saw go by looked generously made. The ham and cheese the man at the next stool ordered, as well as a cheese steak that came out of the kitchen, were practically bursting with meat. The burger was large, easily a half-pounder. The breakfasts looked good too: big omelettes and crispy hash browns caught my eyes, and will probably be my pick the next time I go there. I got there around 11:30 AM on a Sunday-crunch time for diners, and the place was packed but I still got my order in less than ten minutes, and the kitchen was pumping out orders in a steady stream. Dixie Cafe takes cash only, and the parking lot is small. I had to cruise for a bit to find a space. But the meal I got was more than worth these minor inconveniences. read more

Absolutely horrible experience. Not the waitresses fault but sadly the kitchen and management totally threw waitress under the bus and let her deal with the problem. After waiting an hour I finally ask about our order. I was polite although frustrated. Turns out the kitchen lost the ticket. Mistakes happen but you would think a table of 4 sitting there, watching people come in, order, eat and leave someone in authority would have thought...that's weird. But no. No one cared. Poor management. Our family eats out at least once a day. We literally live half a mile away. I will drive a little further to go a restaurant that actually cares about there business and customers! read more

For my class on leadership, customer service, I had offered my review of the Dixie Cafe owner) Last week we went to the local diner, where we eat maybe 3 times per week (while our kitchen is being remodeled and have no stove) and we ordered the 'special' BBQ pork sandwich. It comes with either fries or a salad. My husband and I ordered the same thing. We didn't want the fries, but wanted the onion rings - one order for the both of us. The chef (owner?) said we had to buy the order of onion rings, we couldn't give up 2 half orders of fries in exchange. So, okay, that's what we did. My daughter wanted the special too and her fiancé wanted the BBQ pork dinner. Later, the waitress came back to tell us that there wasn't enough for all four of us so someone had to get something else. My daughter decided on a chicken pita. Our meals finally came, first mine and my husband's, 5 minutes later, Alex's, then 5 more minutes later, my daughter's. The pork was obviously scraped from the bottom of the pan. Tough, dry and difficult to bite through and Alex couldn't even CUT through his. $40. The waitress came to ask if it was all worth the wait for that yummy BBQ pork and we assured her that it certainly was not, and it wouldn't happen again. We have been going to this restaurant for 6 years, spending say about $200 a month there. We will now, never return. All for the difference in price of his onion rings? Ignorant man. read more

The Dixie Cafe (once known as Peggy's) is the only restaurant in the small town/village of South Rockwood. I've eaten here at least twice a year my entire life. Since I seen this place has not been posted for a good while...I decided to check it out after seeing a pic on facebook of a dinner that looked good. I ordered a dinner of 3 shrimp and 3 pieces of lake perch with fries and a choice of soup...salad or cole slaw. I chose the salad but the potato soup really looked good. My salad came and it was iceberg lettuce with one piece of tomato lol...nothing else....shrugs...at least the lettuce was fresh and crispy lol. The shrimp was normal sized and so were the perch...lightly breaded and not too bad. The fries were the normal frozen variety...at least they didn't have coating on them which seems to be popular now...yuck on those kind. The waitress was ok. I would come back again if I was in the area and hungry. read more

My husband, my mom and I would frequent this restaurant about 1-3 times a month. My mom would usually order the breakfast, but was told by the waitress that one of their sandwiches was awesome, so she said she'd give it a try. The sandwich looked somewhat appetizing, but one bite later, and my mom couldn't even finish it. The waitress never asked us how the food was, even after the sandwich sat on the plate for the next 20 minutes as my husband and I ate. When the waitress arrived to take our plates, my mom told her she couldn't eat her meal because she didn't like it. Not once did the waitress ask or offer to take the meal off our bill. We paid for a meal that she couldn't even eat. My mom refuses to go back due to their lack of customer service. read more

Which is basically the cook slapping warm custard in between 2 pancakes. Not sure what kind of cheese was in my omelette. Maybe nacho cheese? The bread was .88 loaf from Walmart. Waitress didn't even ask us how our food was. Just put the check on the table after we started eating and walked away. Please don't waste your time and money here. Decent food, but the employees there can't do math and are sometimes slow. Only been there a few times, but every time I have gone it's been about the same experience. It is a nice place to go if you do not want the standard coney-island chain experience with a small town atmosphere. A lot of the customers who go here are probably village residents and regulars of the business. I am by no means a mathematician, but having to correct my waitress three times for my bill because they couldn't find a calculator was a little aggravating. So I'm really surprised to read a few of the reviews on here. On my way to a meeting I had some time to spare today so I stopped in at this low key cafe just off the expressway. This is a really small country town, so reading the harsh comments about this place seemed a bit snobby. It's a small family dinner, clean, and the only option other than a bar next door. The parking lot was full at 1 in the afternoon, and though they were busy I got service right away. Had a coffee in hand with 30 seconds of sitting down. Staff were friendly, attentive but not on top of you. I started with bean soup.. It was as good as any 4 star restaurant I've been to aside from Mitches.. I ordered a gyro and fries for 7.99. When the food came out (in good timing) I was surprised how much food there was. The cc sauce was home made, and delicious. I'm a bit of a gyro snob myself, and this place has close to the best gyro I've ever had. I also got a coney, just to try it, and even the chili was home made. I use ranch on a lot of stuff and I won't use ranch if it's cheap shit, and they even use high quality real ranch... Not the runny disgusting type you see at a lot of coney style dinners. Anyway... My first time out this way, and it was a great experience. Food was fantastic! read more
