First time there, lunch with a friend. I had the corned beef Reuben - less than half the sandwich had any corned beef, and the corned beef it did have was VERY FATTY! I left all the left over bread on the plate, but the waitress didn't comment on it (hmmm). Angry at myself for not saying anything! Should have sent it back! We've been to Michael's a couple times before and had a great food/service experience. Today was different. Our initial greeting by the bartender was abrupt and borderline rude. It was like she was encouraging us to go to the dining side vs the bar side. Curious if she did not want to have to help (?). We luckily had a waitress that was great. Food was average this time. We had the In Laws in town for a visit and had been scoping this place out for a to visit location. Parking is all around building and there is extra by the river. Upon three stairs up, One enters from the left and go around to more seating area with the bar with seating in the middle. Great design trick using mirrors for the whole wall. This expanse the space quite a bit. Food was great and came quickly. We boxed up leftovers for we were too full! Went on 2/14/25 had to wait for a table only 15 minutes. Our table had no lighting above, it was very dark we couldn't see menus. We asked for a light bulb or light they finally got us one after a bit. We all ordered the special that was ribeye steaks. They came with some werid sauce on them that all three of us asked about. We all took most of the dinner home. That next morning all three of us were very violently sick. The whole weekend we were ill.i called Sunday to let them know all three of us had what we were sure was food poisoning. No Mgr on duty when I called. The wife and I stopped in for dinner tonight. Its wasn't very crowded for a Sunday at 5pm and there was plenty of seating in this hole in the wall restaurant. Alesha took good care of us with prompt service and refreshing our drinks. We had the Prime Rib and Beer Battered Cod dinners. We had a French Onion soup and salad to start. Onion soup was in a large crock and very good but a little salty. The Prime Rib was also good. The cod was a little doughy for my liking but my wife thought it was great. The tarter sauce has a sweetness that was a refreshing change to the normal tartar. We saw a couple pizzas delivered to a nearby table and they looked incredible. This place has been around forever, so anyone appreciating local non-chain eateries with history should like this place. It IS what most people would call a "hole in the wall". But as we all know, sometimes those are the best kept secrets. Even though the entrance way is cramped, the bathroom small and the inside dimly lit, the food is excellent. The staff is always attentive. Consistently good! We've eaten there many times and tried almost everything including the pizza. I've yet to find a weakness in their game. Went in for lunch, it was not busy and our drink order was taken fast. The waitress was very friendly. There were about 5-6 other people there, food took a longer than expected. I ordered a shrimp buffalo wrap with onion rings. The wrap was different from usual wraps I see, and it was good for the price. My onion rings were crunchy, didn't seem like they came from a microwave but I don't know for sure. My boyfriend ordered a Cuban and fries. We are big fans of the Cuban sandwich, this one wasn't exactly what we expected. He said it was too greasy and there wasn't any mustard. There was a lot of meat on it, it wasn't a flop. A few months ago, my sister and I were passing through FlatRock from Monroe MI, to the Downriver area. We stopped at Michaels on The River for a cocktail. Our bartender, William, was so cool and made us the absolute best Long Islands I've ever had in my entire life. He was so cool and made our afternoon a complete blast. Since then, we have stopped by several times. Their food is incredible. In fact, the only thing that I would say about Michaels is that the only thing better than their food is their SERVICE. Went last night for the first time. Beer wasn't cold took 1 hour 20minutes to get a pizza. Was told our pizza had dropped on floor and they had to make a new one for us. We asked for it to go. When it was ready we paid our bill took the pizza it was cold and you could tell it was not just made. I think it was our pizza from an hour and a half ago. I've heard good things about this place. And we had The Luck Of The Irish in that regard since Michael's On The River in Flat Rock was having a Corned Beef And Cabbage Dinner Special in honor of the holiday. While Darlene was out and about, she ordered their carry out version and brought it home. Well Faith And Begorrah and Kiss Me, I'm Irish this dinner was INCREDIBLE !! Tender quality corned beef, cabbage, fresh boiled red potatoes and carrots, and a slice of marbled rye bread. And a "Heapin' Helpin' " no less !! A glass o me Cherry Ice tea to quench me Irish thirst completed this wonderful meal. Today's dinner achieved a good solid "Wowsers !!" Outstanding !! I happen to be a "corned beef aficianado" and this corned beef was tops. Hats off and a huge shout out to Michael's On The River for an outstanding (as usual with them) food selection, quality, and preparation. And for us just good eatin' and no cookin' or cleanup. I put out a request on Facebook Downriver and asked for the best fresh Cod fish fry , hand battered, like we used to get @ Fergies on Fort St./Lincoln Park. A lot of people on Facebook fondly remembered Fergies fresh fish flown in from Nova Scotia. YummO Michaels on the River was suggested.... along with a couple places that we've already removed from our go to places. ( we are very set in what we want . ) We went with our very best friends of 45 years and we were all SO HAPPY ! We had the very best service, too. Be sure and ask for William! He was very efficient.. even in the hectic packed room. He was so awesome to realize that my husbands steak fries were burnt & he got him new to take home. The 3 pieces of perfectly fried Cod was delicious and hot. The thin cut fries were perfect and there was a light coating of a crunchy bite that was awesome! The home made coleslaw was fresh, sweet and great dressing! We did have to wait for a seat... but it was Friday at 7pm- I expect to wait for GREAT food. The clam chowder was absolutely the very best that I've had.... anywhere ! It was definitely NOT Gordon's reheated nasty stuff you get at most places. Bravo! My friend shared her Huge piece of Walleye , lightly breaded in Seasoned Panko . It was beyond wonderful!!! I will definitely go back for it next time. My husband and I stopped in for a bite to eat after being at the Flat Rock Speed Way. I saw the good reviews on Yelp so we figured we would try it. It did not disappoint, the food was very good and very reasonably priced. I had the Turkey Reuben and my husband had the Chef Salad. The bar area could have used some music or something because it was very quiet. One other thing I noticed was the strong smell of stale smoke. Tonight was the whole family, Irish nachos (again) and beer battered mushrooms to start. Mushrooms were large and juicy. Blues burger was probably the best burger I have had in the area. Yes, it's a bar. A dive bar. But they really have great food! Their shrimp and perch are some of the best I've had and their prime rib is good for the price. Their botana is awesome and their pizza is real good, too. Service is hit and miss and they get crowded but it's worth it for the food. read more

I miss the LITTLE PAL. Michael's is a better bar than a restaurant... just too loud and "drunky" many times for my tastes. The food is acceptable. "Hand Battered" seems like a red herring (yes, a tiny pun) I mean how else would you batter food about to be deep fried? With your feet? The parking is sketchy.
