This is a kool little intimate spot to grab a drink while watching a sporting event, have a date, or a friendly meet up. I don't know much about sushi because I don't eat it but I do know saki! This place has lots of it and other drinks of course. Inside there's seating at the bar, a row of tables facing the window street side and further inside there is booth seating (a more intimate setting) where you can gaze at your partner or the cultural decor displayed beautifully on the wall. You really feel as if you've been transported to their homeland. There's also a sushi togo station where a chef awaits your order. Had previously eaten before coming here so really just wanted drinks. Their drink menu has many options of wines, liquor, specialty and non alcoholic beverages. I instantly knew I wanted some saki. I'm not an expert and for people like me their saki menu has the measurement for each bottle of saki on their level of non-sweet to sweetness level. The bar tender was even nice with explaining their number system which is different. I ordered bottle of white peach saki which was very sweet and chilled perfectly and snow beauty which wasn't as sweet but had a nice rich rice flavor. I didn't care too much for that flavor but they both had a nice potency level. The ambiance was nice and relaxing and the service was good even though I think they wanted me to order food even after I told them I only wanted drinks lol. If I ate sushi I probably would but I think they do have other options. The cost is very minimal and I had drinks all night. I saw some other kool looking bottles of saki I wanted to try and keep as a souvenir because the bottles were so elegantly designed. This is a nice local spot to patronize. I came for saki and left with some knowledge, a buzz and minimal damage to my wallet lol. I see why they might be called Katana Sushi because their is a really dope display of a katana at the bar. Ordered delivery so can't speak to the restaurant setting or ambiance. We had three of the basic maki rolls. The quality of the tuna and salmon was good and probably the highlight of the meal. The rice was slightly on the drier side. The hosomaki (smaller diameter rolls) had a decent portion of fish (note some pictured rolls are missing due to the wifey's lack of discipline) but actually seemed to be short on the rice. The seaweed was a little soggy. The avocado was fresh. Now, I don't expect anything amazing with delivery presentation, but the rolls looked to be prepared without any tact. The only negatives were how gelatinous the sauce was (probably too much cornstarch) and the large amount of onion. I mean... there was a whole onion in there. Really good food!! We got here and we're one of 3 tables in the whole place. It was a little slow, I'm guessing because of the weather. We were sat immediately. The waitress immediately asked if we wanted anything. Ordered appetizers and received within 10 minutes. The plum wine was excellent and pretty strong. It's quiet, dimly lit and plays Japanese music (I'm guessing). I got fried rice, gyoza, and shrimp tempura. All we're great TO ME! It was hot and fresh. No complaints. I would recommend either the Tuna Lover or Salmon Lover mean with salad and ginger dressing. There are several specialty rolls that I rotate when I do order. I had a great experience here! We actually accidentally walked to this place thinking it was Mizu sushi but I'm glad we made the mistake. The miso soup here was very flavorful. The menu featured a wide variety of rolls and the rolls were the perfect size. I loved the spicy crunchy tuna roll, scallop roll, and salmon avocado roll the most. I cannot say enough for this place. It's in a spot that appears to struggle and has changed many times since I have lived in Charm City. I sure hope they make it though, because the service and people are so great, and the food is even better. The first time I went, we ordered a bunch of sushi from the menu and special board. I totally recommend checking out the special board and step a little out of your comfort zone. It is fresh and different then what you would normally expect. On that day - there two cuts of blue fin, which we also combined with the salmon skin roll, and some other sushi classics. I have been back and I will definitely be going back. We spent a few moments deciding on drinks - I am still struggling a little to figure out what I will be drinking there - I don't love the wine list, nor sake. So I have been trying out the cocktails, especially since they are on happy hour. I started with the Hey Jealousy a reference to the Gin Blossoms, combining gin and little St. Germain. Enough already, on the food - it's fun to watch the chef make the dishes - he is so focused and his pride shows in the flavor and presentation. We started with the live scallop, which astonished everyone sitting around us, since most, including me, had never seen an actual scallop shell. The thin slices of sweet scallop, placed on a tart lemon slice is a great combo. The center of the slices is a slaw style salad with a little seaweed and some of the sweet meat that attached the muscle to the shell. This chef is definitely introducing me to some new tastes and textures. I can't complain - I'd get it every day. This week, they also had red and black snapper sushi. The two fish were so different. The red was a little fattier and slightly buttery texture, I liked it slightly better than the black snapper, which was a little more delicate. Still both great. One more time, go for the specials. Let's kick it off! This place was better than I expected. As a tuna sushi lover, I was happy to see that there was a dish called 'tuna lover'. So off the bat I was pretty excited. This is definitely one of my favorite sushi places in town. They have the usual fare, including some inspired maki rolls, and something I have never seen before - no rice rolls. In lieu of rice they are just fish and veg, and they are fantastic! In addition to great sushi (fish is always fresh and tasty) they have ramen. I don't eat it but my neighbor has and she swears by it. They're also really fast for take-out. Our sushi is usually ready to go in 5-10 minutes. It's a little pricy, hence the 4 stars, but it is definitely worth the price. As an aside, I have heard that there is another restaurant by this name out in the county. I'm not sure whether they're affiliated but I have heard that the county one is not as good. So if you've been disappointed there don't hold it against this location! read more

Was really excited to have more ramen in Baltimore! My husband and I ordered the Spicy Ramen with pork and a bunch of different sushi rolls to share. The ramen was very flavorful and came with pieces of pork, half of a hard boiled egg, corn, one fish cake, seaweed, and bean sprouts. It came with a LOT of noodles, which made me wish that there were some more add-ins. The noodles were of a good chewy consistency. I liked that the broth was spicy but not overwhelming spicy that your mouth just burned the whole time. We ordered the salmon roll, Philly roll, sweet heart roll, and the American Dream roll. All of the fish were fresh and tasty. We were expecting the chef's rolls to be a little bigger because of the price, but they were still filling. The service was okay. I ordered takeout for me and my roommates. I used their numbered ordering system and they still messed up my order. I ended up with a vegetarian sushi roll instead of pork dumplings. They gave us 4 packs of soy sauce for 4 rolls and the rice on the rolls was undercooked. We also ordered onion soup and my roommate was confident they gave her miso. It said it had mushrooms in it and it was generally just a clear brown broth. The next time I want sushi on a Monday, I will wait until my other favorite places are open on Tuesday. read more

Great Atmosphere! Great Sushi! Great Cocktails! We have been anxiously awaiting the opening of Katana on Montford in Canton as soon as we saw the signs go up a month ago. We were not disappointed! As soon as we entered we were greeted by Anthony and Dan who welcomed us warmly and asked our seating preference (sushi bar, table or liquor bar). We sat at the liquor bar and I ordered a Wader-Melon cocktail that Anthony had created that afternoon. Made with fresh watermelon, it was refreshing and full of the promise of summer. I ordered two! We started with dumplings that were delicate and flavorful followed by Yellow Fin that was presented on a bed of glowing ice. The tuna was buttery and melted in your mouth. We then ordered four rolls with help from knowledgable staff. All of them were absolutely delicious and the flavors of the different rolls balanced well together. I ordered the Blue Fin Fatty for dessert! The heavier tuna was fresh and left a wonderful after note. Were were joined at the bar by another patron who requested a spicier roll. The owner assisted and even prepared a spicier sauce for her to add to the roll she had ordered. The atmosphere at Katana was as refreshing as the sushi and cocktails. A great place for cocktails, sushi and conversation. The bar is equipped with two TVs that had the Orioles game playing. The decor is mellow, comfortable and inviting. This is our go to sushi spot in Baltimore. Huge fan of several of the Chefs Rolls as well as the classic Spicy Tuna w/ Crunch. These folks have been in business for a few years and deliver a bangin dine-in experience (when there isn't a world wide pandemic in progress). I would recommend two rolls if you're a hungry boi, maybe the Chicken Teriyaki Combo box. Have literally never been disappointed here even though I know next to nothing about Japanese food. This is a great little new Sushi restaurant off of Boston street between Fells & Canton. The location seems to have had a really unlucky streak in the last handful of years with unsuccessful business having to close down within months of first opening. It looks like Katana is finally here to stay! The place is run by Chinese servers, chefs, and employees. But the quality of the sushi (fresh fish and other Japanese ingredients) is pretty excellent. For example, when I go to Japanese restaurants in Baltimore not run by Japanese people, I definitely don't expect the best quality and variety of fish, especially when the menu indicates that the selection of sushi or sashimi will be "Chef's choice". But this place the first place in Baltimore to have surprised me. I ordered a sushi platter/bento box for dinner and the components of the box were all good. Some great. Some just good. They include soup, tempura assortment, shumai dumplings, salad, etc. And you have a choice of a main. I decided to try the nigiri sushi bento. The choice of the 5 nigiri blew me away. Some were quite delicate and I know my fish... they were quite exotic and expensive fishes that you would normally have to pay a lot for if you ordered them by the piece on a specials board. I was very impressed. The presentation of food is lovely here. So is the service. They renovated the space a lot and they did a fantastic job. The inside is spacious and welcoming. I would recommend this place for lunch and dinner. Great deals. Great sushi and Japanese fare. I was excited about Katana finally opening up in Canton, but it's hard to review this new establishment. * Ramen: I didn't have high expectations. But gosh, I guess there's still not a decent ramen-serving place in Baltimore yet. I hate to say it and I want to be objective, but I think Katana's ramen might be one of the worst in Baltimore. Tried the spicy and the tonkotsu ramen. I think both had more of a Chinese taste rather than the traditional Japanese varieties. Both were really bland. The meat was disappointing. Not sure how to describe it, but it didn't taste right. Toppings were skimped on. You get a hard boiled, not a soft boiled egg. Noodles are likely packaged, since they were clumped together when the bowl came. I had to split them apart first. * Appetizers: The menu looked great. I was glad to see grilled squid, soft shell crab, and yellow tail jaw available. However, I opted only to get the gyoza, which was probably one of the better ones I've had in Baltimore. Pleasant surprise. * Rolls: Another pleasant surprise. There's a variety of sushi rolls available. I picked out a few that sounded good on paper, and I was very pleased with them. Definitely better than at other popular joints that feature sushi rolls. * Nigiri/sashimi: There's a decently sized a la cart menu, and I was impressed with some of the fish available (i.e. unagi, uni, etc). However, I am usually skeptical about the quality of fresh fish when the restaurant's menu features a large number of sushi rolls in addition to nigiri/sashimi. Don't know what fish distribution networks/vendors the Baltimore sushi restaurants get their fish from, but I typically go to NYC or DC for quality, traditional nigiri/sashimi. That's not a ding on Katana, it's just that I don't trust Baltimore yet. That said, I haven't tried Katana's nirigi/sashimi, but I might change my mind in the future if I crave it enough and the fact that the rolls were surprisingly good. * Dessert: Very plain menu, but the fried ice cream is decent. * Prices: Very reasonable * Service: Impeccable! Orders came out quickly. The wait staff/servers were attentive and frequently checked to see if everything was okay. Overall, I see some promise at Katana. The menu is huge (almost overwhelming as I'm bad at making so many decisions) and they have sushi items wrapped in soy paper. This is awesome as I cannot eat seaweed. I have been here before and had a nice experience, however tonight was a different story. The food was still great, but the water glass was dirty; strike one. I was seated at a table inside and proceeded to place my order. I get cold easily and did not want to be outside. While I was eating a guy came in and wanted to sit outside, but there were no empty tables. This is where I got annoyed...the hostess and wait staff said they could open the doors if nothing opened up. I thought maybe they would just open the end door, but no. No one asked if the doors being opened would bother me; strike two. The one waiter even crawled on the bench opposite me at my table and never said a word. Um rude!
