I usually don't write reviews but I saw one posted the same day I went, sooo: I didn't get a good look at the fish and my scalp skewers did have a smell, that being said the place was clean and dimly lit but I probably wouldn't order anything that's not sushi. The sushi bar had "tired" looking fish. Nothing above pedestrian maguro - no chutoro and certainly not ootiro. Saba (mackerel) was overly cured and unpleasantly stiff as a consequence. Eel was overly sweet. And the tempura platter was too greasy and they did not prepare the batter properly. The served shrimp and vegetables reminded me of a cheap strip mall deep fried fish joint. Shockingly, they did not have grated daikon radish as part of the tempura dipping sauce - "tentsu-u". We will not be returning. Happily surprised by this spot just beyond my usual parts of the city. I've gone out of my way for pickup, take out, and to dine in at Sushi Hana. The price value, while not cheap, is the most effective I've found in the city cause you get solid portions of fresh, quality fish that is handled with delicate care. They have a few creative, non traditional rolls that my partner enjoys. I usually only get sashimi or the chirashi. When we dine in, I'll check if they have any specials like ankimo Inside it feels like most staged sushi houses. There's a particular type of decor and glassy feel to the interior. Everything is always clean and comfortable. My only complaint is I wish the house salad dressing had a stronger base of soy/ginger and a little less orange/sesame oil. We picked up dinner from Sushi Hana tonight, and honestly, it was a complete disaster. I guess the only thing safe to order there from our experience is sushi -- because everything else was terrible. We ordered the chicken and beef teriyaki, and both dishes were a huge disappointment. The chicken was barely cooked and completely tasteless. The beef was even worse... it was literally unchewable. You'd need a meat grinder to get through that thing. This was definitely a lesson learned. If we ever go back, it will be for sushi only. Maybe. But the rest of the food? Never again. read more

Came here early on a Sunday night. The place was almost empty. I got the Yellowtail Don and my husband got the sashimi deluxe. His sashimi consisted of yellowtail, tuna and salmon. My yellowtail had no flavor (I kept putting soy sauce on it thinking it was me) and my husband said his tuna and yellowtail had no flavor at all. There was something very 'off' about our whole meal. We spent $65.00 on this 'meal'. I am praying I don't get sick. I would have been better off going to Whole Foods for sushi. Best sushi I've ever had. I came here at 8:30pm on a Friday night with my friends and it was still crowded. We were immediately seated by the Host and our waitress gave us impeccable service. We started off with fried shrimp and vegetable tempura. The shrimp was unbelievably tender. The calamari was on the crunchier side, and complimented with a tangy, sweet sauce. A cute, young sushi chef made our Dragon roll, and I was suprised at how tasty it was. The rice to eel ratio was perfect and melted in my mouth. Next, we had Salmon sashimi and Tamago. The raw salmon slices were extremely high quality, I've never experienced such a desirable chewing texture. The tamago was exactly what I hoped for; sweet and fluffy. The Dragonball roll was completely fried and stuffed with shrimp and veggies, I loved the contrasting textures. The I Like It roll had a prominent flavor of real crab which I appreciated, I kept going back for more. The Mango roll caught me off guard, it had the most complex flavor and texture profile which I can't stop thinking about. The sweetness of the cooked mango was paired with salty salmon, and the al dente rice played along with the tempura flakes on top. My favorite sushi was the Godzilla. Couple areas to critique here. Got carry out this past Monday night. Person who took my order advised 20-25 minutes, it too close to an hour. The sushi was by far the most fishy smelling I've ever had and that leads to my rating. I had the worst case of food poisoning on Tuesday, started early morning and ruined a work trip. Is Sushi Hana a five star experience? It's always been great when I have gone. I most recently went here with someone after we worked an event and both had long days because of it. We just needed sushi, and we knew SH was a great place to go. I had a spicy tuna roll, a chicken and walnut roll, and some unagi sushi. I don't remember what else was ordered, but our server apparently created or inspired one of the things, and while I can't remember what it was, I remember it tasted awesome. Service was great! Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and recommended a sake to my dining partner who had never had sake, after the one she wanted was sold out. My favorite thing about SH is how large the piece of eel are when you order unagi. It never feels like you're getting ripped off, more like you're ripping them off. read more

Recently tried them again. Used to be our go-to joint for years. Has been a competitor for a while now but our fave spot is takeout only now and I wanted to eat hot food while it was still hot! Food here is usually good. Sushi is better than most places. However the tempura is poor. It's over cooked to the point of tasting burnt and the batter is very heavy. The service is slow, disorganized and lacking customer service of diners over takeout. The last time we were there was before COVID and it was the same story. So can't blame it on that. They did what they had to do - seat you, take you order, bring you your food and check. The Rainbow and Dragon rolls are your staples - can't go wrong with those. This may be my own fault for ordering gyoza and sushi from DoorDash and having it delivered, but still. I have never had sushi delivered to me in a styrofoam container before. One roll had some spicy sauce on it and because the boxed it all together, the hot sauce was all over the container, tainting my non spicy roll. The Gyoza had ZERO flavor and was practically burnt. We did an take out order so didn't get actual service, but the person who took the order seems pretty friendly. Interior is spacious and intimate, I quite like it, feels more Japanese than lots of other sushi places around. The waiting time for our order is a bit long, at least half an hour. But the sashimi was of good quality and was cheaper than Chiyo, pretty thick cut too. We also got some eel rolls and rolls with chicken katsu inside and eel+avocado on the outside. The latter tastes very special, really crunchy inside but smooth on the outside. We might actually come here more often since their sushi is pretty decent and price is slightly cheaper than Chiyo. read more

My friend got her rolls and I encouraged her to go ahead and start eating - no need to wait for me as I figured my food would be right out. I waited and waited, flagged down the waitress, and waited some more. TWENTY MINUTES later, I asked the waitress what was going on. She asked the sushi chef if anyone was preparing my order. He said no. I told the waitress to cancel my order. The waitress walked by several times and knew I didn't have my food while my friend did. This should have indicated to the waitress that something was up, yet it took them 20 minutes to inquire about it. To top it off, my friend thought the sushi was served kind of warm (I confirmed this - the rice was too hot). After I cancelled my order due to the fact my friend was pretty much done eating, they didn't even offer to comp the side salad that I ordered (and ate - this was the only thing they brought out to me). Needless to say, I left no tip and will never be going back again. Service is extremely important to me, and if it is not consistently good, I will not patronize an establishment. read more

When I first heard the name, Sushi Hana, I expected flaming grills and flying knives--you know, like Bennihana. Well, Bennihana this is not. And the food is even better. The sushi is fresh and the rolls are amazing. They also take the extra step to make sure presentation is good, so each plate is a work of art. I swear my plate sashimi had perfect symmetry. I recommend the fried tofu appetizer, sashimi, and fried ice cream. There are private rooms which are always fun if you can reserve one ahead of time. My only complaint is that our waitress was either inexperienced, ditzy, or was having an off-night. She didn't know to clear our table of empty dishes until we asked, she didn't bring water to everyone at the table, she didn't refill our water without us asking, and she never checked on us. read more

We've done carry-out a few times over the past year, and been disappointed every single time.
