Kasabi is a new hibachi/sushi restaurant in the old Arake space in the Barnes & Noble strip mall behind Mid Rivers Mall. This is my third visit but my first time having hibachi. We were there for my son's birthday and I can't say enough good things about them. The hostess and the servers were very friendly and the hibachi chef was super entertaining. I remember when hibachi restaurants first came to St. Louis. They were a big deal and they really put on a show, but in recent years it seems like they have become lackluster. These chef really go out of their way to entertain you during the entire cooking process. We really had a lot of fun; our chef was very personable and made my son's birthday special. If you let them know ahead of time that you have a birthday, they will come out and sing and beat a drum and give the birthday person a free dessert. Other hibachi restaurants charge you for the service but they do not. That's a huge plus. I brought my own candles and gave them to the hostess before our dinner and they had them lit on the piece of cheesecake when they brought it out. I had a cucumber roll that was simple but well-prepared, along with another roll that was decent overall. Personally, I'm not a fan of cream cheese or mayo in sushi, so that roll wasn't to my taste, but that's more about preference than quality. The presentation of the food was very well done, and the service was excellent--attentive and friendly throughout. However, the environment could use some improvement. I would like to preface this post by saying that I lived in Japan for over 3 years. I am very particular about and well versed in Japanese food. This place is located in the large strip mall on Mid Rivers. The space is minimalist with a few tables. There is a hibachi area that we did not experience this visit. Our server was just fantastic!! Helpful and knowledgeable and attentive. We ordered rangoon and spring rolls. They were your standard obligatory appetizers. They offer a variety of ramen options. We went with a more traditional style the ichiraku ramen. The broth was pretty good. Missing a little of the richness of traditional ramen. The toppings were your standard soft boiled egg, nori, bamboo, and fish cake. I was a little surprised to see corn in my bowl, but the Japanese put corn in lots of things so I went with it. The best part of the meal was the katsu style chicken. A thin chicken breast with crispy panko bread crumbs. The chicken was crisp and tender. I recommend ordering extra chicken. The large bowl goes a long way and we finished the chicken about halfway through. We really enjoyed this place and their ramen. While it wasn't as good as some of the ramen I had on my adventures in Japan, it still satisfied my craving. It's also a lot cheaper than a plane ticket! read more

I was only here picking up an appetizer because I arrived just before 2:30 pm. (I got off work at 2) I hadn't done my research beforehand. This restaurant is more classy than I expected. The grills in the center dining area made me realize this was a Japanese steakhouse. Sushi is also offered. Hibachi grilled lunch special will be my choice next time. However, my quick choice was Vegetable Gyoza. It is like a pot sticker in Chinese cuisine. The gyoza was tasty and the sauce on the side added more complexity. I also ordered a green tea "to-go" and this was served in a styrofoam cup with a tea bag. (I was told this would happen... kinda. I was told they would add syrup in a cup and I became curious so I still wanted it.) This place deserves another better-prepared and timed visit. Real lunch special visit- (I was recognized from the day before) This time I was able to arrive before 2 pm on a Saturday I ordered the Hibachi Salmon lunch special with both salad and soup plus green tea. The green tea came out quickly in the standard teapot... however, no tea bag and only fine tea leaves where left after consumption. I believe this was matcha green tea to my uneducated self. Next was the delicately flavored green onion soup that was mostly broth, but fit for this cold day. The salad was fresh with a crunchy snap to forget the cold outside. (I was not charged for a 2 side so not sure if this a true Yelp guidelines review.) The salmon was grilled to perfection with the lightest hint of crispness on the outside. Not bad! I was in the area after having finished my nail appt and had a strong craving for hibachi. I decided to give this place a try since it came highly recommended. I walked in a little after 7 and was told there may be a wait. I was fine with it, esp since I came solo and didn't have a reservation. A few mins later, a couple walked in with a reservation for Hibachi and I was then sat at their table. When we were brought back, I noticed the restaurant was in sections For those who were eating regular dishes to the right, the people eating hibachi in the main room, and those eating sushi were sat in the back room. Upon being seated, I noticed the tables were similar to any other hibachi restaurant. Also, there was large tv in the room, which was nice because I could watch the Olympics! I must commend them on how clean their menus were (that's a first)! After browsing the menu, I decided to get the chicken and shrimp hibachi combo. They def. have a LOT to offer, not just from a hibachi standpoint but everything in general. They have a lunch section, several appetizers, different kinds of sushi, and other Japanese dishes. One thing I was a bit disappointed in was their lack of drinks. They only have beer and wine, no cocktails. Kind of a bummer, but oh well. Like most hibachi restaurants, we were given the house salad (ginger dressing) and the miso or in this case (mushroom and onion soup). The ginger dressing started out great but was quickly disappointing as the more I ate, the runnier the dressing became. The soup was also the soup, while pretty good in flavor, nothing to write home about. Halfway through eating my soup is when the chef came out. He confirmed everyone's order and then started cooking. He cooked the rice first. This place is different because it comes with chicken. I def. appreciated there being no onions in the rice! Overall, the rice was well-seasoned. Usually, the rice is one of the first things I'd eat, but I figured I'd hold off and wait until I got the rest of my food. Next, he cooked the noodles. I was a bit surprised bc they looked just like spaghetti noodles and not the regular ones I'm used to seeing. Those were flavored with a teriyaki sauce, and were pretty good. Last came the main event, my shrimp and chicken. Let me preface this with I get most hibachi restaurants are changing in which they'd offer a couple shrimp to everyone; however, when someone's main dish IS a part of that, make sure they're actually getting what's included. I say this because any other time I've gotten this at a different restaurant, I'd get AT LEAST 10 pcs, if not more. I only got 6 TOTAL. Ngl, I was pretty pissed. He then cooked the chicken, and doused it in teriyaki sauce. While it was pretty good, the chicken itself didn't have a lot of flavor. After a few bites of each, I decided to get a box. Overall, the service was pretty good and the chef was entertaining. Food wise, I'd give it a b+. While not bad, some dishes could use more seasoning. The hostess desk had a closet behind it and I could see how disheveled it was and saw pairs of shoes back there. Not at all what you want someone's first impression to be. I was by myself and got sat at the sushi bar instead of a regular table or a teppanyaki table. I was facing a wall and it was not the cleanest. It was a room behind the room of teppanyaki tables they were using and the room was filled with clutter including someone's shoes along the wall, etc. I was not feeling good about it. I decided to order the Salmon Teriyaki. Salmon on a plate with vegetables and rice and soup & salad. The salad was watery, the soup had no flavor, the salmon was dry and overcooked, the broccoli (not vegetables) was under cooked and not seasoned with anything, and the fried rice was OK but didn't really have any flavor. I didn't even eat half of it. I never really knew who my server was and what was going on here. It wasn't a good experience and I would not return. read more

Service was okay, could have come to check on us more than once. A few of us ran out of drinks. Ambiance was sparse but the food was really good. It is a little expensive but that's to be expected for Hibachi grill. I had the chicken and Calamari. It was fabulous. Most everyone else had shrimp or scallops. Chicken miso ramen was chock full of chicken, noodles and all kinds of goodies. They ask how spicy you want it so you can adjust to your liking. Tried the crab Rangoon which as decent, had more filling that other places in the area. There is a hibachi area and a regular menu full of ramens, sushi and other goodies. Excited to try more.
