Karma Asian was the setting for another first date. I seem to have a lot of those lately, which means I am becoming unintentionally qualified to judge restaurants not only by the food, but by the mood. Can you talk here? Does the decor help? Does the service make things easy? Do you suddenly regret needing the restroom halfway through the conversation? That's where Karma gets complicated. It's right on Broadway, in the middle of everything, and it clearly has a loyal following. The room is dark, funky, and full of objects, screens, carved wood, fish tanks, statues, gongs, and a general kitschy style. There is a version of that I usually like. Older restaurants can have character. A little weirdness can be charming. But dated and cared for is one thing. Dated and not especially clean is another. The service was genuinely friendly, and that deserves credit. Everything came out quickly and hot, which is always a big plus. The food itself was fine. The edamame was predictable and perfectly acceptable. The gyoza were not especially exciting and were rather bland, though apparently not bland enough to stop me from eating more than my share because, well, carbs. The pad Thai with tofu was decent, a little sweet, and a curious color. Not offensive. Not memorable. The bigger issue was the condition of the space. Some of the photos show it better than I can describe it. The vents were giving off some serious ick, and a few areas felt like they had not been updated, cleaned, or loved in a while. I do not need every restaurant to be shiny and new. I usually prefer places with a little history. But cleanliness matters. A lot. And then there are the bathrooms. To get there, you pass through a doorway with beads, which feels like it should lead you towards your destination. Instead, you enter what may or may not be a storage closet, and it is quite dark, there are chairs stacked everywhere, and suddenly you are on a questionable journey. You zig. You zag. Eventually, you find the toilet area, and the sink is shared outside the two bathrooms, which adds another little layer of "what is happening here?" It was not quite portable-toilet-in-a-Denver-public-park bad, but it was close enough that I thought about the comparison, and that is not where you want your mind to go. So yes, Karma has personality. Yes, the staff was kind. Yes, the food arrived hot and fast. And yes, plenty of people clearly love this place. For me, though, cleanliness is a big deal. A restaurant can be dated and still feel taken care of. Sadly, that was not my first impression here. Friendly service helped. The food was okay. I have walked by this local restaurant many times. It has an old world feel with dark wood Chinese motifs and a dark interior. I was surprised at the large menu. They have Happy Hour daily Tues-Sun from 2pm-5pm. I ordered a Bangkok Margarita for $9. Actually quite good. For HH, I got 4 fried pork wontons for $6. Wontons were well filled with a spicy sauce. Next was the HH Sesame Chicken. I got 10 pieces of crispy chicken with a cup of white rice and veggies for only $9. My husband and I came here for the first time today with some friends, and we're so grateful we now know about this hidden gem! Everything we had was fresh and flavorful, and the staff was very welcoming of our loud and boisterous group lol We were the only table in there for about an hour on Saturday afternoon, and while it was nice to have the place to ourselves, I hope they are typically busy, because they deserve it! I've been trying to branch out a little bit and try more spots around the neighborhood and I've never been to Karma. This will absolutely be one of my go to take out spots from now on! I just wanna start off by saying the spicy edamame was the best edamame I have ever had. Perfectly flavorful and smoky!!! The teokbokki had a nice crunch to it and the drunken noodles were full of veggies! I wish the sauce was a bit more flavorful but overall everything was delicious. I guess I have good Karma cause every single time I visit here it's a HIT! 10/10! I ordered the crispy vegetable egg rolls and veggie wontons as appetizers, the wontons were better in my opinion. I tend to like my veggies crunchy inside of my egg roll. I find it troubling when it's mushy inside. But hey - some people don't mind. This was the only item I was partial about. Now to the chicken lettuce wraps... THE STARR of the Appetizer show. Just a BURST of flavor in your mouth. It's so yummy you can tell it's made with love. They are quite literally the best chicken lettuce wraps I have ever had. I could live off of them. No I am serious! Now I ordered Spicy Drunken Noodles with shrimp and it was yet another home run. Everything was cooked to order. The noodles weren't mushy, they were perfectly oiled and soft. There was no excess grease, and it actually was much less spicy than I expected. (It's south broadway and Denver) not a lot of spice fanatics around this city. Not Thai Spice! So those of you wondering whether or not when you order extra spicy if your held will be on fire, just know that it won't be. At least not if you're a true spice lover. The vibe in Karma is welcoming. The door is open when the weather is good, and it feels like you're in Miss Cleo's bungalow or something. Very majestic and zany but warm and inviting. Came into Karma on a Sunday night after a day on South Broadway and was very glad we finished the night off here. I started looking over the menu and they had so much stuff that sounded great. Asian Fusion for sure with most coming from either Thai or Chinese options. We started with the classics. Crab Cheese Wontons and Steam Pork Dumplings. You know our good too. We of course got some Saki too because the night wasn't over yet. We chatted with our waiter a bit too who was extremely friendly and helpful. We were also a fan of their fish needed Karma of course. We then order entrees which we pretty much just shared. We got the Pad Thai with Shrimp, Drunken Noodles with Beef, General Tao's Chicken, and the Kal Bi. I will say all of these were very good and would order each again. Plus the prices were get too. The Shrimp Pad Thai was different for most Pad Thai I have had but was very good. The noodles were a little different too and was saucer then most but we really enjoyed it plus the shrimp where huge and perfectly cooked $16. The Beef Drunken Noodles were my call and was great too. Saucy, tender beef with the perfect amount of veggies. Plus at only $14 this is a win for sure. The General Tao's Chicken was also different from what I'm used too but we really enjoyed it. The chicken was so crispy with the right amount of sauce made it not get soggy at all. It also came with more veggies then what I'm used too but I really enjoyed them $14. The Kal Bi were basically Korean Short Ribs and you know I love Short Ribs so we had to get them. Could have maybe been a little more tender but the flavor was amazing $20. I was pleasantly surprised by this little hole in the wall! My boyfriend and I walked past on our daily walk last week and so we decided to stop by for dinner. The restaurant is dimly lit with cool lo-fi beats playing in the background. It's super casual and exactly the vibe I wanted. We ordered the spicy sesame chicken and salt and pepper pork. The chicken had great flavor but was not spicy. Definitely could use more spice. But given that downtown Denver is all white people, I get why they make it mild. Lolz. The pork was super tasty as well! I think it could've been crispier but the flavor was spot on. It reminded me of my childhood ordering this dish at Chinese restaurants with my parents. A friend and I visited on an extremely hot Saturday afternoon. The interior was cool, chill and inviting, with a lo-fi soundtrack. I ordered the mango and veggie stir fry with tofu. It was fantastic! Tons of fresh vegetables--broccoli, snow peas, red peppers, onion, carrots, and soft fluffy pillows of tofu with a light corn starch coating. Trying to decide where to eat on Broadway is a WHOLE thing. So many options, not enough time. I can't remember why we ended up at Karma, but I'm pretty sure it was because the friend I went with is obsessed with the lychee martinis and spicy edamame. And we really wanted some sort of Asian soup. All the above 100% lived up to the hype! Parking can be a challenge on Broadway, but it's not too bad if you arrive shortly before people get off work, around happy hour time. I think the wait staff became amused by how many orders of spicy edamame we kept putting in... like three, including one to-go. I had a lychee martini, which was strong and not to sweet. Both of us also enjoyed delicious bowls of soup. Would love to come back at least for the lychee martini and edamame! They have a ton of other great menu items I'd love to try, especially since I'm always on the hunt for the best Asian restaurants in Denver. The food here is pretty good. Nothing spectacular but I would definitely go back for a quick bite to eat. I recently went to this restaurant with my date on Saturday night. It wasn't very busy which was nice. The seating was comfortable and the table spacing was good. There was a lone fish in the fish tank that kind of made me sad because I wish the fish had a friend. I really like that they served our drinks and tiki cups, we just had sodas. For an appetizer I ordered the Pineapple Cheese Wontons which were delicious. My date ordered the Vegetable Egg Rolls. For the main entrées I ordered the Pork Chop in Coconut Curry Sauce. The coconut curry was delicious and it was packed full of vegetables which I really loved. The pork was battered and fried and placed in the curry. My date had the Teriyaki Beef Rice bowl. I didn't get to try my dad's dish but it also looked really good and smelled great. We didn't end up getting dessert and had to take a lot of the food home because we were given so much. This restaurant is a standard Asian fare restaurant. I mean, another mediocre Asian place in Denver that weirdly offers all cuisines (Chinese, Thai, and Pho, will always make me pause). The food arrived hot, and was decent. I got the Chicken Pad Thai, and it was NOT orange, which I have only found at 2 places in Denver, so that was a plus, but it didn't have a ton of flavor and had an abundance of random veggies (giant cubes of red bell pepper, why?) The pineapple wontons were mostly cream cheese, but they were crispy and satisfying and the sauce was refreshing. The portions also felt small for the price, compared to other places we have ordered from. The best part of the meal was the freshly made order of sesame balls! This place met our needs on a Sunday night when we didn't feel like cooking, and the delivery arrived hot, and in reasonable time (we used DoorDash). We wanted to love this place. It's a cute, small restaurant we popped into after seeing great reviews. I loved the Tom Hai Gai soup, the flavor was delicious! Highly recommend! The crab wontons were also great and crisp. I wasn't super hungry, so I should've stopped there, but tried their honey prawns. This was straight up just bad. It was WAY too much breading (with a soggy cardboard flavor) and not enough sauce so it was really hard to eat (which we did since it cost $18). My fiancé got the Dan Dan noodles and was pretty disappointed with the lack of flavor, not spicy, forgot the peanuts, etc. He said he was underwhelmed by the whole dish. We really feel like we ordered the wrong items off the menu, because we saw other people getting curry and it looked lovely, but neither of us thought our entrees were good. My partner and I are just really sad grieving our dinner tonight. You see typically we order from Pepper but today I thought let's try something new. Especially because for some reason every restaurant in this city is relentless with the imitation crab in the wontons. I thought the pineapple wontons would be a good change. And they were!!! Loved them. They come with a cucumbery watermelony minty sauce which I liked in small amounts. The pad Thai was pretty good as was the fried rice. Also we got delivery and the order was packed well. We were very devastated by the curry though.. it was a big slap in the face because it has a somewhat gelatinous texture. Corn starch maybe? It reminds me of a gravy. Hard to describe but neither of us liked it. You can sort of see this texture in some of the pics on here - I actually noticed it in pics before we ordered but thought it wouldn't be like that for us LOL. Anyway I was wrong. It's gelatinous gravy vibes...just odd, and I think the starch mutes a lot of the flavors as well. Usually i love to get punched in the mouth with fresh herb flavors of curry but it just wasn't there this time. I would have enjoyed a saltier option, but they are excellent. All the soups are also exceptional, and, at only a few dollars, why wouldn't you try one or two! Follow up with a set of spring rolls and you've started off on the good meal train. For the main, I went with Dan Dan over nood's. It's huge! I tapped out half way through and saved some for Sunday brunch. Great mix of fresh crisp veggies and round noodle. The sauce is slightly perfume like that I can't quite place, but not overpowering. Worth the price and the parking hassle. We also added a the Kobe Beef over veggies and rice. Unreal. A deep and dark beef gravy made this dish perfect. The wok seared edamame, bordering on singed was a heavenly combination of salty, peppery, vegetal, smoky and sweet. Paired with a lychee-tini it was transcendent. The fried pork chop was exactly what your Chinese grandmother would make: savory, flavorful and tenderly prepared.
