Bakery & Cafe? I'll rate Karl's for both. First the bakery. Their donuts are great (fritters too!) I like their Cinnamon bread and the muffins I've had also. However, many of their other confections and breads are average at best. And I've known a number of people who've had their custom orders (like cakes and such) messed up with no reconciliation. So Bakery: 2 stars Now the Cafe. Sausage, eggs, bacon, donuts, hash browns, etc - they do really well. It's really cheap too! The decor is so outdated that it's kitschy but the whole place is clean and the staff is nice. So Cafe: 4 stars Overall Karl's get's 3 stars and I'll keep coming back for great breakfasts and donuts - but I won't be ordering a cake anytime soon. read more

My husband and I got our wedding cake here and it was overall a pretty good experience and we would order a cake from Karl's again. We wanted to save money so we did a small round cake to cut and then 3 half sheet cakes. I had planned on having the sheet cakes cut behind the scenes so I didn't really care what they looked like but Mike insisted on decorating them. I'm glad that they did because they ended up looking nice enough to display on the dessert table. He had us pick out quotes to put on each cake and choose colors and I was satisfied with the decorations. The price was also good; to get enough cake to feed about 110 people would have been close to $1,000 if we did one big cake and we ended up paying about $425 for everything. We got pink champagne cake with strawberry filling and cream cheese frosting for one half sheet cake and for our little round cake, one half sheet of the marbled cake with raspberry filling and chocolate butter cream frosting and one half sheet of the basic white cake with lemon filling and vanilla butter cream frosting. We went to a tasting when we placed our order and they had all of the fillings and frosting flavors on a plate and then cupcakes of each cake flavor made when we got there. It was nice being able to try everything out. I think the tasting is $10 if you don't end up ordering a cake but free if you order something. The only reason I don't give them 5 stars is because some of the communication between us and Mike (the owner?) was a little difficult at times. First he kind of implied that the delivery might be difficult because he had a bunch of other deliveries that day and he started talking about where all of the other weddings were, how big the other cakes were, etc. I didn't really care to know about the other deliveries and felt like "well, we're paying you to deliver it so figure it out, we don't want to stress out about that." Then when I emailed him about the cake decorations I sent 2 pictures that showed a gold foiled look on top of the frosting and he called and said I was confusing him and he needs just one picture even though I said in the email "these are examples of how we'd like to add some gold color to the cakes." He asked us to come in since he was mixed up about the gold foil-look and kept talking about how I was confusing him when I send more than one picture for a single cake. I didn't think it was very complicated but whatever. Then he asked if I'd just buy the gold foil stuff from Michaels because they only had gold frosting which I thought was a little weird. I bought 3 different gold items, not knowing which one would look the best and also asked that he add the gold to the sheet cakes which never happened and he didn't give back the ones they didn't use like I asked. It was only about $20 so it's not that big of a deal. Overall we were satisfied. The cakes arrived on time, looked good and tasted pretty good (though they were a little heavy on the frosting and they could have been a little bit less sweet) and everyone seemed to enjoy them. My husband and I have also gone there for donuts and cookies and we've always been happy with those. Overall I'd recommend Karl's to someone looking for a bakery to do their wedding cake. read more

When we went to Karl's we weren't really sure what to expect. They are a bakery that serves breakfast and lunch as well. We grabbed breakfast and it was pretty good. Typical american breakfast, eggs were a bit of an odd taste due to I'm guessing using egg beaters but nothing bad. We also grabbed some pastries. The apple fritter in particular was awesome! I recommend everyone to grab one if they check this place out. If you are looking for something fancy this isn't the place for you but if you want a small comfortable good american breakfast check this place out. read more

Repeat customer who will not be returning. New owners mean terrible customer service and poor quality products. The cake I picked up had amateur looking writing on it and while Kayla agreed to fix it she and her mother/co-owner were acting like they were bending over backward for me when the cake should never have been sold as it was. After waiting about an hour for the writing to be redone, it didn't look great (divets where the frosting was scrapped) but I needed the cake. After explaining that I was used to a higher level of quality (see previous review) and that the writing on the cakes in the case didn't look any better, Kayla got angry and said she didn't want me to have the cake if I wasn't happy with it. Her mother asked what she could do to make it right. I asked, "Do you have time to fix the cake for the party happening now?" She did not. I said a discount seemed appropriate considering the cake needed to be fixed and that I waited about an hour for it to be corrected and it still wasn't great. They said no discount (which I only brought up because Kayla said she could do a refund or discount when I brought the cake back and pointed out the issue) and then proceeded to argue with me and explain how they tried to make it right. Again, you wouldn't have to make it right if you had a higher level of quality and fixed it before I picked up the cake. If you see that the writing is big on one end and too tight on the other then fix it before a customer leaves with a cake that looks crappy. Have some pride in your cakes!! Kayla explained that it was a base price cake ($60) and implied that I shouldn't have expected much. She also got confused when I showed her a cake for comparison that had fondant on it. No I don't want fondant and yes iced cakes look very different from a fondant cake, but I was showing you what a pokeball should look like. Long story short, mother and daughter wanted to argue with me and didn't want to let me leave with the cake (which was already paid for) because I wasn't happy with it. They now claim I insisted on the refund. Not true! I said I needed the cake despite its poor appearance and they kept saying they didn't want me to have the cake when I wasn't happy with it. They refunded my money and I found a replacement cake at Safeway. The bakery employees there had no problem writing out 'congratulations' in proper proportions on the cake. One went to check on people sitting at tables and the other went over by the espresso area. The lady by the espresso area kept giving me mean looks. Neither came back by after 5 minutes so I left. I went to Karls Bakery at the suggestion of others and I will tell you it was AWFUL!!!!!!!! The cake which BY THE WAY for a HALF SHEET costs nearly 70 dollars, it was FAR too sweet, nearly frozen in the middle, and tasted horrid. EVEN KIDS complained about it being too sweet. THAT'S BAD. the icing was grainy, and quite frankly the decorations left MUCH TO BE DESIRED. when I called the manager to complain rather than offering my money back, he said he would give me a coupon for more product and I flat out said are you kidding???? needed to adjust my expectations i just moved to the Everett and was looking for a close breakfast place i could go to and sit to enjoy a nice breakfast sammich....doing some yelping i found Karls bakery right down the street and within a mile of my house. here is where my expectations were shot down..... keep in mind i went in at 815am on a monday...prime breakfast time ..right? :) i sat down.....waited...waited....old men came in and went to the counter and got some donuts and coffee and sat themselves down to enjoy some yumminess......i waited....ten minutes on i went to the same counter and asked if i had to come forward to order or was someone going to come to me....the lady replied "order here"......right.....i ordered the special breakfast of the day from their board.....croissant breakfast sandwich......and an orange juice.... lets start with the review..... the place is from 1968, last remodel....updated sporadically since..... you see some Ikea...you see some 1980's dentist office faux art on the wall..... original glass cases filled with diabetic nightmares...yummy :) the atmosphere was sparse with old white men talking about firearms and sipping a never ending cup of "Jo" filled by a well dressed cherman man in in his 70's...maybe thats Karl and i am not a regular to know. the service, what service? the lady behind the counter was nice enough and pleasant....just took my order, answered my question, took my money with her plastic gloves on and off she went to do whatever she was doing... few minutes later i see that same lady that took my money with those plastic gloves on pop up on the other side of the wall putting on a new pair of plastic gloves when the phone rang that was answered with plastic gloves on. She did her business on the phone and then proceeded to stuff bags with bread. few more minutes go by and another lady pops up from behind the wall of mystery and delivers my croissant sandwich.... My impressions of the breakfast...not meal...breakfast..... costco croissant.... deli ham..... scrambled and microwaved egg all served together as a replication of that time honored dish from the Earl of Sandwich... i was mildly happy with the meal as i felt like Jack in the Box could have satiated my needs just as much and a whole lot faster. I finished my from concentrate Welchs OJ and out the door i went into my cherman car and back to my house..... this is a delightful smelling bakery that probably is better suited to the patron that wants a donut and some coffee, a patron who wants to order some cookies or donuts, even some bread and take their coffee to go, maybe their lunch is a whole lot better and there is service..i am not sure how the deal goes there...maybe i was expecting too much of this place for a sit down, be served breakfast place with yummy food...maybe i ordered the wrong stuff....i dunno , but i dont feel like i am going to give them a go again for breakfast till i am in my 70's and my cock doesnt work and all i want to do is drink coffee and eat diabetic bombs and talk shop with similar aged and working old white mens..... the atmosphere==3 the food=2 service=0....self serve cleanliness=4 bathroom= N/A...didnt even bother to urines as i held it to my house.... what i want to do if i go back again....try their lunch plates....i want to get a dozen donuts to take to the fatties at my work and see how good they are....try their folgers roast coffee and see if i am satisfied...i just cant believe i got what this place has to offer,,,,,,give it a try and let Yelp know what you think..... read more

My son and I ordered his wedding cake here and the cake that showed up at the wedding wasn't even close to the cake we ordered. I was sure they had delivered the wrong cake. Karl's Bakery did not care and insisted it was the right cake. It's disappointing enough to receive an inferior product on such a special occasion, but for a business to act offended and uncaring about their error is such bad customer service. Apologize for your mistakes. It was easily proved; picture of what was ordered and picture of what was received.... evidently you don't need repeat business, referrals or good reviews or you simply don't care. This place smells like a doughnut. Which isn't a bad thing. It also feels like you are walking straight into 1975 when you enter. Which isn't a bad thing either. I like old places like this, they have a certain charm. The lady working the counter said they have been open since before time began - I know they've been open since at least '75. It's a bakery and small sandwich shop. I had the burger and fries - it was on a homemade bun, which I like. The burger itself was a little well for me - but my bad for not specifying I like medium. The doughnuts looked awesome - but I opted to take home several pieces of baklava and a loaf of Swedish Rye. As soon as I got back to my desk at work I had a piece of the baklava and it was great! It tasted like a baklava doughnut - mmmm! Another charming touch was that apparently the owner's daughter fancies herself a writer so they had one of her mysteries at each table - I really like that - if you go alone to Karl's you have something to read while you are enjoying your homemade baked goods! Karl's Bakery went under new management in December and WOW is there a MAJOR improvement. The donuts are amazing and their menu has improves IMMENSELY with some very YUMMY entrees. One of the reasons I decided to purchase my wedding cake in 2013 because their website and the people that help me to order the cake told me that we will get the top tier free for our first year anniversary, I called them today and I was told that they don't do it anymore. So I check on their website to verify the information I received from the store. The website says that they will give a complimentary cake for the first year anniversary as I copied and pasted the paragraph here with the copyright of 2014. I called back to the store and I was told by an employee rudely (well, we haven't updated the website yet).... I think this misleading and fraudulent practice and I would not come back to this bakery ever again. I LOVE KARLS BAKERY!!! I have been comin here since i was like 6 months old. Now i bring my 2 sons here, and they love it. The waitresses are so kind, especially val. They are unbeatable at what they do. Nothin comes close to the food they have because it is all homemade. There is nothing commercial about it. Not the people who work here, the food they serve, the attitudes. NOTHING. It is a homey spot where you can order a fantastic burger and fries, and see everyone you know walk in. The only problem with this place is at about 12 pm ( lunch hour ) there is basically no where to sit, because everybody is here. but other than that. it is just a hole in the wall with a real special place in my heart!!! read more

I called around to find a Bakery, there is limitation. I was looking for a special cake "German Chocolate Cake". I found Karls, I called and asked if they made this cake, received a yes. I asked how I order since I have never ordered a cake before. I shared during my conversation, how this cake was a special Birthday cake for my husband that he's grandmother use to make with Coconut Pecan Frosting. The representative explained Yes that is how they make there's. When I walked into the store today for the first time, Wow pastries, cookies, donuts, etc. was awful tempting. But when we saw the cake, first thing my husband said it wasn't German Chocolate cake. I shared our concern with the representative and conversation I had when ordering that was not what I expected, she said you will really like it She offered nothing else. I'm so sad, becuz I wanted it to be special and thought I was assured. I had to pay in advance, never got a receipt, I think the representative didn't want me to say anymore about how disappointed I was with the cake. It was suppose to be $34.00, hope I didn't get charged more and what a waste.. I asked about Napoleon's if ordered by the dozen any price change, the representative said they are priced as is and offered no dozen purchase price, so we left. We decided to cut the cake early, the layers of cake were so thin, I ordered the 9" thinking it would be nice and fluffy layers, nope. It did have the Coconut frosting I expected on the outside inside which was good. But no PECANS!. The frosting on the outside was way to sweet and disappointed. Learned a lesson, too bad pastries, cookies and other stuff looked good. Wish the representative was more personable minimally but very stern. read more

Karl's Bakery was the artist and mastermind behind my wedding cake. My husband and I literally teared up when we saw how beautiful and perfectly made our wedding cake was. They were very accommodating with the specific requests we had. They never once fussed about any changes we requested. What's amazing about Karl's Bakery is that they encourage clients to return for their "one year anniversary" wedding cake... on the house :) And I must say, all of our guests were taken back on how moist, not overly sweet, and delicious our wedding cake was. Will not go back, had the worst customer service. Sat at a table, when the lady behind the counter just looked at us, I went up and asked if we order at the counter or the table since it was our first time. She said you order here then just looked at me, so I went over and grabbed a to go menu. Ordered some sandwiches and an apple fritter, coffee and water. Was given the apple fritter, immediately went back to the counter for a fork and knife so we could cut it up and split it among the 4 of us. Another lady was at the counter and told me she'd bring it out to me, several minutes later I had to go peek my head in the kitchen and ask if they could cut the apple fritter if they were not going to bring us any silverware. She said oh, and handed me a fork and a knife. While I was there I asked if we could get our coffee and waters, she said she'd bring it to the table. Went and sat down, shared our apple fritter. She then proceeded to bring 1 coffee (which is what we ordered) and 2 waters - um there were clearly 4 people at the table, rather than deal with another eye roll, we just shared the 2 waters. The worst part was the attitude as if we were bothering them by being in their restaurant/bakery, you'd think they'd try to be friendly however we were just treated like we were a nuisance. I ended up at Karl's when the coffee shop across the shop was unexpectedly closed one morning and I wasn't disappointed with my experience here. It's an old school bakery. A huge display of pastries and bread (the pastry I had was very good). They have self-serve coffee that was great for my coffee-chugging self. And they had some limited breakfast and lunch food options that weren't fancy but were CHEAP. The staff was exceptionally great. Joking around with each other and their regulars. And I can see why they attract regulars. While I was there a group of older men were there for their regular breakfast and discussion of world affairs. It was a hoot to hear them talk. They do not have wi-fi so my quest to get some work done was sidetracked. Instead, I had a great pastry and lots of coffee and enjoyed the conversation of the people around me. read more

This place was exactly what I was expecting it to be, looking for a small spot to get a light breakfast with my husband and kid. They had pancakes for the little one, which was a good alternative to the donuts for her, also came with bacon. We got the cheese and ham stuffed croissant, which was buttery and flaky and didn't skimp on the ham and cheese. It was reasonably priced, also took a cupcake and sourdough rye bread home for later.
