I haven't been here since 2017, and sometime along the way they remodeled (it used to be blue inside). We came for their buffet since three other places we called all cancelled their buffets last minute due to a recent snow storm or remodeling. I didn't expect to like it but was pleasantly surprised. The interior was warm, open, and inviting. The odd blue color and cramped interior tables were gone. The buffet was decent, and while I didn't find anything really exciting or surprising they still had a lot of good options. I especially enjoyed their dessert selections and fish entrees. When we were here last, they didn't offer naan but it was available on our recent visit. Everything tastes better with naan. It seems my favorite place is constantly either being remodeled, or is switching chef's, or offering inconsistent food. I crave spicy Indian food that is exciting, and this buffet offered neither. However, it was a "safe" option for a good Indian buffet. read more

Karavalli is an absolutely tragic waste of time. The food is good but not worth the hassle of the god-awful service (or lack of) there. My fiancé and I had been craving Indian food and a co-worker of mine suggested Karavalli. We were seated after a minimal wait. We ordered the samosa chaat as an appetizer, plus a dosa, some idli, chicken tikka, and a side of naan. We asked for the samosa chaat to come out first. About half an hour later, our waiter brought out a cold dosa and cold idli. A warm-ish chicken tikka and some naan came out soon after. We never got our samosa chaat. We asked for refills of water several times but never got any. Dinner took almost 2 hours because no body came to check in on us, but the staff had tons of time to wipe down other tables and cater to larger parties. We asked for the check, and when we got it 20 minutes later, we are disappointed to see that the first item on the check was our non-existent samosa chaat. They took it off the bill after we brought the issue to their attention. The food was good which is the only reason this is a 2-star review instead of a 1-star. There are actually several other Indian restaurants in the area. Go there instead. I know I won't be back at Karavalli. read more

Typical Indian food restaurant. I read reviews and expected better quality and tasteful entrees. We had paneer masala very good (any time if in doubt go to entrees would definitely be Paneer tikka masala or chicken tikka masala) The kofta curry was horrible and very sweet - wouldn't recommend. Curries overall very sweet in taste. Breads nice and thin but got cold fast. They serve a bowl of complimentary rice with the curries. The male servers were very polite and friendly. Quick service food came fast. It was busy and crowded on a weekday which is a good sign! Prices are good low to average $18 per entree. Portions are good large sized. They have a full bar and we ordered tamarind martinis/margaritas, which we didn't like as much. Dessert was the best try the pista kulfi- absolutely delicious!! If coming to a Southindian restaurant then order South Indian food. My mistake was to order northern Indian food here so I got disappointed. read more

When you've been going to a restaurant for over thirteen years, it's nice to know that they can still surprise you. Obviously, you don't keep returning to a restaurant over that period of time unless you are thoroughly satisfied with at least the food, if not also the service. Our most recent visit demonstrated that we had become a bit negligent in our dining out. Upon entering, everything looked a little bit different. The buffet tables were in a different location and in their place there was now a full bar. The dining room was more spacious and there were low partitions, maybe about 4.5 feet tall, that separated some tables from others. It gave you a little more intimate feel as you dined at your table. We commented to our server and he explained that they had expanded the restaurant about eight months ago. Shame on us! The rest of our evening experience was no surprise. A very enjoyable meal with excellent service. We started with my wife's traditional favorite, Mysore Masala Dosa ($10). The filling inside the dosa seemed extra plentiful and as tasty as ever. But wait, there was one more pleasant surprise for us. They now also offered Ubu Ale. We each ordered a bottle ($5 each). Instead of our usual Naan, we decided to try their Chapathy ($3) - I decided I liked this wheat flavor better and will probably favor it over naan in the future. My wife stayed with her favorite Indian dish, Chettinadu Vegetables ($13) while I chose the Lamb Madras ($17). Both dishes so full of flavor and being such generous servings that half of each came home for enjoyment the next day. And they were, in fact, just as delicious the following day. read more

They were super busy so the soda we ordered never materialized and we had to ask to refill our water (& spicy food needs water). I don't know if I'd return...unless it changes in the daily? Here is a problem of dining at an Indian (or any other culture food) restaurant. Make sure you read the reviews of fellow Indians before delving into the menu. We had very little expectation from an Indian restaurant in Albany, since most Indian restaurants in the US is pretty Americanized. Nevertheless, when we enter an Indian restaurant, our natural instinct tell us to order dishes that we would like to have and not the ones that the chef's specialties. We were famished before entering into the restaurant and were pretty astounded by the ambiance. We entered around 8:30-8:40 PM, so that is near around the closing time. I guess the waiters realized our hunger and it was very nice of them to give us some quick complimentary papad. But they were extremely tasteless (probably microwaved) and the chutney was watery. Nevertheless, we ordered four mango lassis, a plate of chili chicken and tandoori wings. We received our first set of orders at 9:04 PM. They were pretty nice. I won't say that the tandoori wings were very good, given that some pieces were more burnt than the rest, but the chili chicken was delicious. Our hunger knew no bounds and we ordered 3 chicken biryani and a plate of goat vindaloo. I don't know how to say it better but we liked neither of the biryani or the vindaloos. The vindaloos had more aloos (potatoes) than goat pieces, and the sauce tasted like store bought uncooked tomato paste with a lot of deep red color. The biryani was pretty dry, although they had a huge portion size. I would have given an extra 0.5 stars for the quantity of the biryani, but the vindaloo was a big let down. This place was fantastic! This was my first introduction to Indian food and I was so pleasantly surprised. First impression was that the place was very nice for being in a crappy strip mall. From previous reviews i can see that the recently remolded. They definitely did a great job making this place feel and look upscale and super clean. Second impression was the amazing service. There were plenty of wait staff walking around clearing plates and filling drinks. My water glass was filled every couple minutes it seemed. The only time we had to wait was for the check. And with the check they brought these extremely pleasant, lemon scented warm hand towels. it was a great touch. Drinks - They have a full bar, wine list and a selection of canned beers. I just stuck with an IPA since the wine glasses were all $9, which i find pricey. But i think wine would have paired better with my meal. They had select indian beers on the list but i didn't opt to try it this visit. FOOD - Most importantly Garlic Naan - hell yeah, get this. its basically garlic bread. Chilly Gobi (fried cauliflower) - Very good, very spicy. I am also a spice weakling so that's preference. The cauliflower was perfectly battered and fried and it stayed crispy. the sauce was good but if i had a few pieces in a row, i had to chug water. - good thing they kept the glasses filled. Chicken Tikka Masala - OMG YUM. this is my first time trying this dish but i loved it. The creamy tomato-y sauce was heaven and the chicken was marinated so well you could see how deep the red spice penetrated the meat. I already want to have this dish again. Paneer Korma - I thought this was just OK. I was not much of a fan of the paneer because of the odd, spongy texture. It did not remind me much of cheese. The sauce was unique and creamy, but didn't provide too much flavor. I think this dish just didn't stand out next to the tikka masala. It was all served with basmati rice which was great to carry all the sauces. It was all SO good. This was all for 3 people to share, and came to about $60 before tip. Not bad! I am now officially an Indian food fan, and I want to come back for more! read more

(And I say this as a former resident of NYC where amazing Indian food is plentiful.) On my last visit I stepped out and tried something new which I wasn't crazy about. The waiter was very concerned that I hadn't eaten much. I told him it was good, but just didn't really appeal to me. Went with a group of ladies to celebrate Galentine's Day and we had such a wonderful time. The service was wonderful. The staff was very patient and informative and gave us some really good food suggestions based on our preferences and everyone of us were really happy with our orders Unfortunately we were so busy having fun we really missed taking photos of food. The newly renovated space was nice with several noise muffling interior low walls. Been here for very good buffet lunch several times, but this was my first dinner. Service from start to finish was attentive and pleasant. Never have the water glasses been refilled so promptly anywhere else which is a good thing when eating spicy foods. The menu was diner friendly. It was organized by category, veg or non, and main ingredient with ingredients for dishes included. The server was helpful and answered our questions. Two starters: Hara Bhara Kabobs -- three tasty spinach, green peas, and potato small rounds with dipping sauce. And the Karav Meat Sampler -- kheema samosa, kabab, and Chicken Nan. This nan was so delicious, we wanted more. I never had it before and could happily make a lunch of it. Main dishes were **Two Rack of Lamb (marinated in herbs, Tandoori style) ** Two Cochin Snapper, a Kerala specialty of whole snapper cooked Tandoori style and served with a flavorful curry sauce. My 11 year grandson, a seafood lover, and I had the snapper. We were careful of small bones, but the effort was worthwhile because the fish was moist and flavorful. He brought some home. The above dishes were plated with Biriyani Rice, salad, and garlic nan. **One Lamb Sagg, prepared with a mild puréed spinach sauce with spices, tomato, and ginger. **Chicken Tandoori, full portion (pieces on bone). Daughter brought half home with some nan and rice for a future lunch with her sons. We also ordered the fragrant Rosemary Nan. Pleased we were able to enjoy a leisurely dinner without being hurried, and the restaurant was full. No back up at the door, so it appeared their reservation system was working well. After dinner while I waited by the door for my husband, an (the?) owner asked me about my experience. I praised the food and service. He asked what I ordered, and when I responded Snapper, he said each fish is about two pounds before cooking. Wow. P.S. Rest Room was renovated, clean, and attractive. read more

Karavalli is a Cap Region gem. We were able to go for dining in on Saturday. They were extremely mindful and made us feel safe. There are the special door handle wraps that are antimicrobial and there is a hand sanitizer station that they ask you to use as you enter. The restaurant is spacious so there is plenty of space between tables for one to feel safe. The staff and service is top notch. But, at end, we are there for the food and drink, yes? They have a full bar and a good wine and cocktail menu. The food is Indian food done with sophistication. I had the chicken tikka masala (my usual go to) and it was creamy and full of delicate flavors. Hubby had the rack of lamb. Oh my! The flavors in that dish - so many wonderful flavors! As a starter, we had the potato Bonda. It was absolutely delightful. It is spiced potato with chickpeas. Everything was just so flavorful. Great meal out. Can't wait to go again soon. read more

Place is dead. 5 tables including me. Got seated right away. Got papad and water quickly. After that the service is God awful. 10 min til I just walked out. Ton of staff. Walked out from shit service and no food ! Literally counted 10 people. You could have had two people per table yet You can't even get one person to even take a drink order, let alone appetizers or anything else. By far some of the worst service I have ever had.
