Ok there's from this place again after few years. Food was not close to what Pakistani food is. I got shami kebabs that were huge and dry and smelled like they were fried in older oil. Oil that was used for few weeks. Service was a take out order. So good and fast. Some people were sitting for lunch buffet. Naans were dry and rubbery. Poori looked and tasted like white tortilla flat bread fried. I don't know what to get couple good authentic Pakistani dishes around. Sheesh kebab was okay, it was that $2 chicken kebab chopped with some onions n green peppers and lemon and they charged me $15 for it. $45 down the hole. Raita was too sweet and carroty. It's basically American version of Desi food. They just took the Desi out of it. Kashmiri naan was just the most unappetizing orange colored thing with coconut shreds in the folds. What happened to almond shreds and raisins on Kashmiri naan. Post Covid times, food is just super expensive and the quality is gone. I am done. Back after about seven years. $8.99 Lunch Buffet is now $16.99. Variety of food on buffet is typical of mid level Indian buffet places. Impressed that they received a 100% compliance score from Health Department. No violations. Bravo! One complaint: Buffet starts at 11:00, yet Naan was not put out until 11:50. However, the Plain Naan was warm and very good! I was selective about what I put on my plate. Again, Tandoori Chicken was overdone--dry and tough even the thigh piece I tried to eat. Not okay. Chili Chicken is good. It is similar to Chinese Sesame Chicken. Tikka Masala was very good with tender chicken. Spinach with chickpeas was good. The two rice choices were nice and hot. The Mulligatawny Soup was lukewarm and thin and spicy as expected. Cabbage is excellent! Nice flavor and cooked well. Dessert was their regular rice dish that I did not want to eat. Don't even know where to start. Got a massive takeout order, so I'm not mad about it taking 20 more minutes than we were quoted. The food seemed like it had been frozen then thawed, with the exception of the korma. It was all watery and weird like they just defrosted it that morning and hadn't made it fresh. The naan also seemed like it was frozen, because it was tough and very unpleasant. The garlic on the garlic naan was most assuredly from a jar because it had a weird flavor and texture; definitely not fresh. When I was sitting inside waiting, I was looking around and was unsettled by what I saw. Filth everywhere. A full bus tub from lunch time I assume just sitting there getting crusty. I got a peek into the kitchen when the door opened and I was horrified to see a wall covered in filth. First, be aware that Shalimar (Latham) is not the same as the Troy or Delmar locations. (Although I was told that the Latham and Troy locations have a 'business partner' relationship.) We have tried delivery orders from the Latham location several times and the food is great, portions are large, and prices are reasonable. The Troy location was a disappointment in all areas when we tried them. Cost was up to 3X for some items and portions were less than1/2 the size as provided by this Latham location. We have no experience with the Delmar location. We have tried Chicken biryani, Tandoori Chicken Aloo Paratha* Paneer Makhani Pappadum We placed similar orders from the Latham and Troy locations a few weeks apart. Universally the Latham location was the best in terms of quality, portions, and cost. In particular, the Aloo Paratha from the Latham location was excellent - large and satisfying. The same item from the Troy location was less than 1/2 the size, greasy, anemic, mess that cost 3X the price. We will gladly return to Shalimar Latham in the future. Terrific place to eat! The service was very pleasant and the food was tasty. Through a mis-communication on our part, we received a sauce that had dairy in it which my wife couldn't eat. The server brought another sauce without the dairy in it at no charge. First visit. Went for the the shalimar appetizer (a lot pf food), goat curry and mango lassi. The appetizers were good but the samosa was not fully cooked and had some uncooked dough. The pakoras were my favorite, also the chicken. The goat had great flavor, but for my taste needed longer cooking to get it tender (that's the way I'm used to eating goat). Plan to cook it further at home. The mango lassi was amazing, probably the best I've ever had. They have indoor dining with social distance. Would return to try other dishes. read more

The quarantine has made me cook more meals than I have had to do since I had young kids in the house. Now I am cooking for myself, my SO and his mom. I had made a chicken korma but felt we needed more for the meal. I dialed up Shalimar for goat curry and some naan to add to our dinner. I expected a small amount of goat but was pleasantly surprised that the dish was sufficient for us all. The goat was tender and falling off the bone. I also ordered garlic naan and it was delish. We order Shalimar for delivery, and it always arrives in good condition, still tasty and fresh. Their chicken tikka masala is my favorite of the Indian places that offer delivery to us. Their onion bhaji is absolutely yummy and we always get some as an app. Everything we've tasted has been really good. My one "eh" was a paneer dish we ordered. The place might seem empty, but they are busy busy busy as one of the best, local takeout options in the area. Their food is consistently good, especially for the price. For a more upscale experience, Karavalli is the go-to, but on a dreary Tuesday evening when you don't want to cook, Shalimar's dishes warm the palate, stomach, and heart. :) No specific recommendations as far as dishes go - we rotate around the menu and haven't found a dish that stands out among the rest because they are all just plain delicious. My daughter and I stopped here for dinner on the way back to our hotel by the Albany airport. I'm a very long time vegetarian who more recently developed a bad soy allergy. Even a small amount of soy causes significant intestinal inflammation and bleeding so I must be very careful. As a vegetarian, I often seek out India/Pakistani fare when I travel. Although I'm originally from the New York area, I currently I live in Boise Idaho, a place with only a few options for vegetarians and every fewer options for good Indian/Pakistani fare so going to such restaurants is a treat for me. Proprietor was fantastic, first told me that everything on the menu has soy, which, while saddening, was greatly appreciated. He then asked me to give him a minute to pursue options. A minute later, he came back and offered to make me a dish off the menu using mustard oil and seasoned vegetables. He also made a fresh batch of rice for me to avoid the small amount of soybean oil they normally use in the rice. Meal was excellent (if not a bit spicier than I'm used to). Food was simple, well seasoned with a nice flavor and the vegetables were cooked just right (not overcooked as is often done). Upon noting that I was sweating a bit, he supplied a side of raita to help with the spiciness. My daughter ordered the chicken tikka makhani and naan. She said the chicken tikka makhani and naan were both excellent. The chicken was very flavorful and nicely prepared. The naan was light and fluffy. I would have loved to try the butter naan but there is apparently also a small amount of soybean oil in the naan (again that so much you for letting me know !). The proprietor was wonderful, great effort to work around my dietary restrictions. When I went to pay, the proprietor offered to work around my soy allergy in future and suggested, next time, if I called ahead, he could be better prepared. What has happened there?! We spent $55 on a dinner last week that was HORRIBLE. Are they re-heating leftovers? My husband arrived before the food came out, and put it into an insulated bag for the less-than-10-minute ride home. It should have been piping hot as in the past, but the dishes were not even heated through. The paneer and malai kofta balls were barely warm in the middle. Had takeout from here with the fam and really enjoyed it! The menu doesn't have much that you can't find at most other Indian restaurants, but everything arrived hot, fresh and flavorful. I really appreciated the fact that there was some actual heat to some of the dishes, though that might be something for the spice-averse to watch out for. I was also pleased by how tender all of the meat was: I've struck out a couple of times recently with over or under-cooked meat from local south Asian spots, but the lamb and chicken in our order were both perfectly done. My only minor disappointment was the Baingan bharta. Had a hectic day, was quite hungry and had to wait for a while to get the meal due to adverse weather conditions but it was well worth the wait. I had two main items in beef biryani and beef do pyaza as well as an appetizer in samosas. The samosas (two) were delicious & flavorful and I felt quite full by the time I was done with them owing to their enormous size. Needless to say, the best was yet to come in the form of the main dishes. The biryani was aromatic with tender chunks of beef with huge portion size. The beef do pyaza couples onion slices with bell pepper which gave it a slightly sweet taste which worked well with the curried beef. They have smaller portions on the buffet but they keep it stocked which ensures freshness. Did I mention that the food was tasty? This is so far the worse Indian lunch buffet we've been to. The food was cold, more spicy than other places, and I only got cold naans. The service was really lacking. During the entire time we were there, the two guys at Sharlima were just standing behind the counter and talking to each other, rather than refilling our water or taking away our dirty dishes. The lunch buffet was $6.99, but we were charged an extra $1.50 each for tea. The tea cup is tiny, and no refills. Don't get the tea, it doesn't worth the price. One of the rare reviews from me that will get the extra star largely because the place is a bargain. This is purely for the lunch buffet, as we haven't tried single-dish takeout or dinner. For $7 each ($4) for the junior member of the party) we got a perfectly decent subcontinental buffet that had salad (meh), soup (yum, citrusy), naan (including yummy garlic naan), basmati, chicken vindaloo (good, if a bit on the bland side), chicken biryani, daal (mediocre), pakora (excellent), tandoori chicken,veggie curry (decent), roasted chickpeas, and a number of other reasonably savory pan-Indian specialties, topped off by a little rice pudding at the end. The meat is a little sparse, and there's no beef or lamb, but that's probably where you're saving the $3 - it's basically a vegetarian cuisine anyway and the meat is more to Western taste. The spicing is just a little higher than the usual toned-down American-style Indian food, which is to say it was a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10 with occasion brushes with a 3. We consider this a pity, and will continue to hope for finding more authentic spicing intensity. It ends up being decent comfort food and the pricing is excellent compared to the other Indian-style lunch buffets we've been to in the area. Newbies should definitely note, though, you have to go up to the counter - waiting to be seated or for the buffet will delay you, you can just take a plate and start shoveling away if you want to. It's more of a cafeteria than a service-plus-buffet style place at lunch. (If you're coming for lunch or takeout, you have to chase down the single server, FYI/fwiw.) We also had warm service and friendly conversation with the server/front of the house guy, who turned out to be from Bangladesh. I stopped in for the Lunch Buffet at Shalimar of Latham. The Lunch Buffet is offered daily for $7.99 (weekdays) and $8.99 (weekends) until 2:30 PM. I stopped in here around 1 PM and I took a seat at a small table in the center of the cozy dining room. The buffet station tables are situated along the right and back walls of the dining room. On my visit, the buffet was stocked with around 20 items including chicken tandoori, chicken tikka masala, goat curry, aloo paneer, vegetable korma, bhindi masala, chana masala, naan, mixed pakoras, raita, salad (lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber), basmati rice, chicken biryani, chutneys, mulligatawny soup, and kheer (rice pudding). The food on the buffet was the standard fare found at most Indian buffets. The food for the most part was good with several dishes tasting spicy. The chicken tikka masala was my favorite main dish. The pakoras (onions, eggplant, potatoes) were chewy. The dessert (kheer) rice pudding was okay, which was very sweet and had a thick texture, not like the milky texture version of kheer with cardamom, raisins, sliced almonds, and rose water I'm used to having at other Indian restaurants. The service was acceptable and my used dishes were cleared often. I cashed out up at the register when I was finished. The lunch buffet was filling and it was a good way to try several dishes and items offered at Shalimar at a very reasonable price. read more

We dined in on a Friday night. First impression was that it felt a little like an empty warehouse; it was not what I was expecting. No ambiance here. It wasn't quite busy yet and one of our servers seemed disinterested, almost like he was annoyed that we were there. I agree with some of the other comments that service leaves much to be desired here although our other server seemed very friendly but even he couldn't compensate for the other server's misstep. We started with the chicken pakora, which is a delicious, spicy, flavorful version of a chicken nugget. It was delicious! We then ordered chicken tikki masala and the mattar paneer. The CTM was spicy, creamy, and my only complaint was that the portions felt small. The matter paneer was full of flavor, and left me wanting more with every bite.
