After wanting to go literally since it opened, and particularly encouraged by all the positive reviews, my wife and I happened to be driving by for the Wednesday dinner buffet and had to stop! Shortly after we were seated there was a long line out the door, so certainly a popular spot, or at least for the dinner buffet. All told, we were a bit surprised to ultimately find the food just 'slightly above generic Indian buffet food.' Also, in spite the establishment's name, we asked twice for dosas but tragically none ever arrived. The meat dishes were primarily chicken, but varied and tasty. The chicken tikka masala was good and tasted fresh. I was too excited to take a picture before but it came with fresh cilantro and a drizzle of cream on top. The service was excellent. They are very friendly and clearly proud of the restaurant. It's a nice place for fast casual dining. It's nothing fancy, but it doesn't need to be and it's comfortable. Unfortunately, we didn't even get to try the food that's been highly rated because my group and I were immediately alarmed by the fact that there was a BULK of utensils that was directly set on the seats of the booth when the waiter sat us down. Nothing was underneath the utensils, no cloth or anything. They were just on the seat bare. Not even on the table. The waiter then gathers them all in his hands so that we can sit down and puts each one on our table, then accidentally drops one on the floor. The logical thing to do when working in food service is to take it away to clean but he proceeds to put it on the opposite table for the next guest. We immediately left after that. read more

You know how many Indian buffets have a dinner buffer during the week? I do, as my wife and I called just about every one we could think of in the area. And the answer is one... here. And only Wednesday night. (In fact, I called Wednesday morning to confirm and was told "no", but then I could hear the guy on the other end of the line remember what day it was and change his answer to "Yes"). We came at 5:30 for dinner (they open at 5) and within about 30 minutes every table was packed with a few people waiting outside for a table. The staff were very friendly. The food was about 16 items of standard and non-standard Indian fare, plus condiments. Of note, I tried some sweet/spicy fried Okra dish and loved it. I also really enjoyed their potato donut things but I don't remember what they were called. Their chicken biryani was too spicy for my wife but I thought it was fine. Their chilli chicken was just so-so, and I suspect it got soggy from sitting on the buffet line too long. They don't have many dessert items like rice pudding or fresh fruit, just those those balls floating in sweet syrup. They were quick with the water refills, which was nice. Everything is set up in a corner, and the line was long (4-5 minutes) to get through at times. But, I guess that is how it goes. The staff walked around with complimentary dosas which was a nice gesture. We enjoyed ourselves. Even our toddler enjoyed watching the Bollywood movie in the background and was dancing along with it, which the staff found amusing. Originally from NJ we're a bit spoiled by truly good Indian food. There isn't anything decent where we live now. On our way to the excellent Capitol Repertory we stopped in to Dosa Grill. Reviews on Yelp were good but we chose it because it offers dosas and other southern Indian dishes besides many other well-known favorites. Located in a strip mall, The attractive small dining room was clean and comfortable. Pakoras and samosas were excellent starters. I was disappointed that the deliciously spicy Rasam soup was not available. The dosas we chose were excellent. Our server, Kartif(?) was warm, friendly and helpful. This is not your grandfather's "grill." They have been open for over a year and they do not have a liquor license. I don't know if they requested one, but the "grill" must be in their kitchen. But putting that aside, any restaurant serving dosa is going to get our attention. Typically, we order mysore mysala dosa with a spicy potato filling when it is available. But we took the opportunity at Dosa Grill to try a filling that we had never encountered before - Minar Special Pav Bhaji Dosa ($12) with a spiced thick vegetable curry. The crepe itself was excellent, easy to tear and convenient to use in pinching to pick up portions of the two different fillings. Both fillings, one slightly spicy, were very flavorful. Along with the Dosa we ordered Bhel Puri ($4.95) from their special street style appetizer menu. Served cold, it is a sweet and spicy mix of pulse flour, puffed rice, peanuts, lentil, and spices. It was so delightful, we devoured it. I've neglected to mention that when we were first seated in our booth, we were provided with glasses of water, that were continually refilled without request, and the traditional papadum, mango chutney, and mint yogurt. The mint flavor was not that noticeable. My wife's entrée was Crispy Mango Bhindi Masala ($14.95), a vegetarian dish of spiced okra with dried mango and Indian spices. It was a very flavorful mixture of spices and the chopped and batter coated okra was indeed crispy. For spice level, she requested medium and based upon her tolerance for spiciness she considered it mild. She did take notice that the next day, her leftovers were even more flavorful than the day before. I find it difficult to not order lamb when I have the opportunity, but don't make the mistake that I made. Even though our waiter had no idea who Josh Rogin is, he was still not able to make the connection with the dish that I wanted. Lamb Josh Rogin is apparently nothing like Lamb Rogan Josh ($15.95). The lamb was so tender and did not have the slightest bit of gaminess. The blend of all the flavors in the red curry was very tasty. I, like my wife, thought that my medium spice level request was more like a mild. However, my leftovers the next day were not only delicious, but the spice level seemed to increase to a level that I had hoped for at the restaurant. We did also order plain Naan ($1.95) that I thought was delicious. I used it to totally sop up the remaining sambar from the dosa. Service was friendly but pressed when the kitchen and waitstaff got swamped with dine-in and take-out orders. They must have a lot of repeat customers, because we were identified as first-timers as soon as we were seated. While we had to flag down our server for our bill, who apologized for not checking in with us more frequently, the checkout is an efficient Wi-Fi system that allows you to use your credit card at the table and print or email your receipt. read more

My husband and I have been swamped with work these last few weeks because we're in the process of moving, so cooking has been the last thing on our minds after our long days/week are over. After spending all day packing and moving stuff from one place to the other we were STARVING and wanted an all you can eat spot that won't break the bank. I searched online for any local buffets and found this beauty being recommended for their Wednesday dinner buffet. The service was fantastic, all the waiters were kind and attentive, the buffet was being refilled constantly. They were extremely busy the entire time we were there with a study flow of people coming and going. The tables had table clothes with a glass top that gave the restaurant and elevated atmosphere for the very very affordable price of $15/pp for the buffet. The vegetable options were 15/10. I loved every single vegetable dish I tried but the chili cauliflower was my favorite! So so delicious and can't wait to go back for more. I was at a conference in Albany and my coworker was in the mood for Indian food. I have only ate Indian food once in my life and did not have a great experience. My friend is a big foodie and she knew exactly what to order. We ordered samosas, vegetable briyani, spinach dosa, garlic naan, sesame naan, chicken masala. Everything was absolutely delicious, the chicken masala was creamy and the chicken was super tender. The naan paired perfectly with all the food and the sauces. What I really liked was that the food was not spicy at all, my coworker said she would have liked if it was spicier but I'm sure if you request it spicier, they will. I absolutely LOVED this place. I've been strictly going here for 2.5 years. I thought the prices & quality matched very well. However I will be switching Indian food places after tonight, they increased the prices +4$ per entree with a decrease in quantity. It is also now an extra 7$ for a side of rice. Our usual go to order was typically 35$ now it is 50$ and we received significantly less food. You can call me picky.... However if I am spending 50$ on a two person meal, I am looking for the same quantity and quality as I had when I was paying 35$. This is the only Indian restaurant in the Albany, Latham, Clifton Park area that has a weekday dinner buffet. I created to a post in a large Facebook food group to ask around and was given lots of incorrect information so I began calling each place and asking. We also called several on a Saturday evening and were told only a lunch buffet. This is the only place that had a dinner buffet, but its only Wed night. We arrived around 5:10 pm and were probably the 3rd or 4th group seated. All the tables were full by 5:30 except for 2 in the middle. When we left around 5:45 they were asking people to wait outside for a table. Everything was clean and fresh. The buffet isn't huge but there are more than enough things to try; Palak paneer, chicken Tika masala, chana masala, goat curry, vegetable pakora, medu vada, bihndi fry okra, tandori chicken, chili chicken, chicken biryani, basmati, naan, green salad, Gulab Jamun and some I'm probably missing. They staff came around and offered a complimentary potato dosa as well. They provided a high chair although it was a little wobbly. My child enjoyed the music videos and danced along which the staff thought was cute. The staff was friendly, accommodating and attentive. Waters were refilled frequently and with ice. The buffet was $14.95 plus tax and we were not charged for our child who only ate a piece of naan anyways. This is a great dinner value. read more

The customer service for takeout was top notch and the two people I spoke with when I picked it up were friendly and accommodating. I arrived a little early so I was asked if I'd like a drink while I waited and they sat me in a booth so I was comfortable. A few minutes later my food was ready and I was on my way. I had actually placed another order a few weeks later and then realized I had a flat tire. They were wonderful on the phone when I had to cancel my order stating they hoped things worked out and to call back and order anytime. This is my new favorite Indian restaurant. At a recent OYE, two Yelpers agreed that Dosa Grill is currently "the place to beat" for Indian buffet in the Cap District. I got there for lunch ASAP and though I had a good meal, it did not meet my high expectations. The flavors were mild and uniform, vs sharp distinctions from one dish to the next. The choices are almost entirely vegetarian which might be fine for some folks, but I like a little meat for variety. (There were a dozen veggie dishes and just 2 chicken dishes, and no tandoori.) Also, the free dosa that accompanies the buffet appears to be discontinued. There's other bread to be had, including some stale naan, but I really wanted to try that signature pancake even though my dining companion Bill Z said it was really a half size mini-dosa. Dosa grill's lunch buffet was so worth it that we came back two times in one week... We went on a Thursday (relatively more quiet) and Sunday (packed with a few people outside already) around 12pm. DISCLAIMER: This review is only for their lunch buffet. There was a good variety of food: 1. 'Salad bar' with actual salad, yogurt, onions, chutneys and pickles. 2. Vegetarian section with 6 dishes, these rotated depending on the day. The vegetarian dishes are probably the highlight. 3. Meat section with 4 dishes, these also rotated. Although the flavor was good, all of the meat was tough and dry. The lamb biryani on Sunday was done way better than the chicken on Thursday, however both mainly had bones. 4. Dessert section... if you're lactose intolerant you might not live. There was an assortment of fruits though. 5. Dosa was served straight to the table, the coconut chutney served with it was A+ and they had sambar at the buffet line. Theres something's this place does really well, and some they could improve on... but for a $9.95 lunch buffet, don't bat an eye, just go. read more

What sort of cuisine do you expect from a place called Dosa Grill? If you guessed Dosa, you're only partially correct. Yes, there are dosas and yes, they are simply scrumptious. But there's so much more to Dosa Grill than just dosa. Our party of four showed up for lunch. We were seated immediately. We had papar to munch on while we looked at the menu, which took longer than expected given the surprising number of options. We started with a tandoori chicken salad and papri chaat as appetizers. The chicken on the salad was perfectly cooked, wonderfully tender and juicy, but the salad was lettuce and mayonnaise. Not appetizing. The papri chaat was soooo good and I was sad when it was all eaten. For lunch, our party of four ordered a saag paneer, two paneer makhani, a lamb curry, and (of course) a potato dosa. And naan. We never forget naan. The saag was ordered medium and packed quite a punch in terms of spice level. In all fairness to Indian food, I'm a bad Indian person and I don't handle spice well. I couldn't get past the heat level, but there were no leftovers so take that as you will. The two paneer makhanis were one mild (mine) and one medium (not mine). I loved the mild makhani. My sister ordered the medium and found it just a tad too much to handle. The lamb curry was ordered extra spicy, so I can take no position on that but there were also no leftovers. The naan was great, but it's kind of hard to mess up naan so... When came time for dessert, we were presented with complimentary gulab jamuns. I love gulab jamuns and I love free stuff, so I was thrilled by this. When came time for the check, I'm not surprised the gulab jamuns were thrown in for free since our bill was close to 200 dollars. We ordered a lot of food, so I guess it's not terribly surprising. My only complaint about Dosa Grill is the service. The restaurant was mostly empty, but whenever we needed a refill on our water, the waiters were all huddled in the back watching some sports event. Went here for a birthday dinner and wasn't disappointed. We ordered different things and ate family style. The complimentary papad was cool. They give you a spice level option when you order your meal, which is great. The shrimp pakoras, vegetable pakoras, and veggie bullets were good appetizers. I like how the pakoras are bite size. The tamarind, coriander, and onion chutneys were good. We ordered Chicken Mango, Chicken Tikka Masala, Curry Goat, Chana Masala, Chicken Vindaloo (all served w/Basmati Rice) and Color Dosa and all were amazing. We also had naan and aloo naan. I would have given 5 stars except the Chana masala and curry goat tasted like salt was added as a garnish, which it definitely does not need. I will just say no extra salt next time I order. The dosas are huge. Definitely will be back often, especially to try the lunch buffet. The restaurant was getting full after we arrived for dinner on a Friday around 6:30p. This place is a gem! We had only ordered take out from this place but finally made it to dine in recently. We over ordered so that we could try more things and I'm glad we did. The dosas were perfect. We had the palak paneer dosa, which was also a hit with our six year old. I actually prefer the dosas here to the mango highly acclaimed restaurants in the city in Murray Hill and Jackson Heights. Samosas were perfect. The chana masala was delicious and not too heavy on the ghee, though it was much better the next day as leftovers. Naan, paratha, and rice were all great. We also had the chocolate naan as a treat, which was huge and dangerously addictive. The place itself is extremely clean and very pleasant. The service was some of the most attentive and friendly I've recently encountered. For the quality and service, the price is astounding. We essentially got two meals per person for a group of 2 and a child for around $55 before tip. We came here as a treat, but will likely make it a more regular destination. read more

Paneer tika was overcooked. Saag tasted like the spinach was old. Karavalli is much better but wasn't open on Tuesday. I'm looking forward to trying their Wednesday night dinner buffet, and bringing groups of friends here, some of whom have gluten intolerance (they conveniently post some of their gluten-free menu items under the glass table-tops). Regarding the lunch buffet: How do they do it? Specifically, how are they bringing so many quality items to the buffet at a price significantly cheaper than some of the other buffets in the area, and with a complimentary dosa? The meat entrees are predominantly chicken, but I've occasionally seen lamb on the buffet. Their chicken tikka masala is among my favorites among Indian restaurants. There's a nice assortment of vegetarian options as well. Their dessert includes both kheer and carrot halwa, the latter probably being not excessively sweet and perhaps the freshest tasting of any I've had. The staff, the area, the food, the drinks. It was a great eating experience. The ambiance was very nice with desi music playing in the background. We were starving and ordered pani puri for appetizer. It tasted pretty authentic and the sauce was really good! The dosas we ordered were also really good and we diminished it within minutes. I've been wanting to try the dinner buffet. The reviews on here were quite good and being vegetarian sounded like a nice option. By the way, the dinner starts at 5 PM not 4:30 as listed on this website. The staff and service was very kind with good attention both to the patrons and the buffet offerings. Tonight there was saag paneer, Chana masala, a cabbage dish, lo mein ( co-opted from Chinese buffet?!) as well as a soup rice and naan. Everything was fresh, but nothing had real flavor. My favorite was the saag paneer. No dish had any heat. Most of the dishes tasted the same. The lo mein was absolutely terrible. How could you be an Indian buffet and put that on your offering and make it so terrible in addition? And frankly, cabbage dishes aren't anything anyone ever wants to eat. The sweet dessert balls were a little mealie. Everything was fine just nothing exciting and I just don't think I'll be back. read more
